Formafantasma is a design studio founded in 2009 by Simone Farresin and Andrea Trimarchi, with offices in Milan and in Rotterdam. Their practice is based on research, and their deep investigations into the ecological, historical, political, and social forces shaping the discipline of design today inform not only their critical and influential exhibitions and academic inquiry, but also the exquisite objects they have produced for commercial manufacturers of global renown. In this episode, Simone and Andrea discuss with Paola Antonelli their use of design as a lens to and understand the world, and their reliance on the formal elegance of objects as Trojan horses to unveil unethical practices and exploitative systems of extraction that are entangled with design and production - exposing them so they can be dismantled. Three projects in particular, supported by solid, publicly available research and culminating in exhibitions, illustrate their approach. Ore Streams (National Gallery Victoria in Melbourne, 2017, and Triennale di Milano, 2019) focused on electronic waste, while Cambio (Serpentine, London, 2020) examined the global ecology of timber. Oltre Terra, which will open in May 2023 at the National Museum in Oslo, studies the systems of extraction and production of wool, and therefore the complex relationship between animals, humans, and the environment. You'll find images of the projects Simone and Andrea describe in this interview on our Instagram feed @design.emergency. Thank you for listening! Hosted on Acast. Critical Zones | Assembly Towards Permacircular Museums [22.04.2020] The ecological footprint of art institutions can be reduced through a more responsible approach towards exhibition-making. This session will focus on sharing exhibition-making practices that follow a more sustainable way of production, thus highlighting the importance of taking responsibility for the environmental impact of institutions' own action. This section will present case studies by experts in the field who practice these approaches but will also address obstacles to the process of ecologizing art museums. The event opens a space for discussion, exchange, and sharing between professionals in the art sector, also involving learning from experience of other types of museum institutions. with Ianina Prudenko and Alexei Shulgin (co-founders of »Art Footprint Manifesto«), Graciela Melitsko Thornton (Creative Green Programme Lead, Julie's Bicycle, London), Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin (design studio Formafantasma, Amsterdam), Helen Turner and Pablo Wendel (Co-Artistic Directors, E-WERK Luckenwalde) and an activation by Benoît Verjat (research designer)

With Stefano Boeri, Ersilia Vaudo, Paola Antonelli, Formafantasma, Andrés Jaque, Legacy Russell We take stock of the planet’s environment, both natural and manmade. Can we still talk of an Anthropocene Era? What is the planet’s culture as seen from the Moon? What is culture beyond the pandemic? – From the Moon the Earth seems to be a serenely beautiful sphere of blues, greens and whirling white clouds. From the moon, is where we can finally step back and look at the state of our planet; from the extinction and destruction being caused by climate change to the interlinked conflict and crises that is effecting our population. This podcast will look at Planet Earth as if we are broadcasting from the Moon, the distance allowing us to make sense of the immense beauty that sometimes coexists, but that can often disappear when faced with such grave challenges. Seven episodes of From the Moon will try and unpack the state of the planet via different, distinct topics that interweave and complement the XXIII Triennale theme. Bringing together the fields of design, innovation, science, art, philosophy and more besides, conversations broadcast From the Moon will offer solutions and warnings, they should inspire and critique in equal measure. The 2020 pandemic is of course present in all our consciousness, and rather than addressing this as its own topic or episode it has to be taken as a subtext of the whole podcast series. Some episodes will have particular resonance when it comes to assessing the impact and consequences of the Covid-19 crisis. HOSTED BY DAVID PLAISANT – David Plaisant is a freelance journalist and writer based in Italy. Episode Summary: In this episode we meet designers Andrea and Simone from Studio Formafantasma, who share with us their vision on regenerating design through continuing the discipline by integrating more intelligent contemporary interventions, while taking a step back towards nature. In the current context of the pandemic, two of their exhibitions, 'Cambio' in Serpentine Galleries and Rijksmuseum's 'Baroque in Rome', are closed to the public; they tell us about their unforeseen challenges in a time of prolific changes and their thoughts on the enhanced opportunities in the digital dimension. The duo discusses the importance of slowing down, incorporating sustainability into the design process and their optimistic beliefs in a more collaborative future. The Speakers: Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin, known as Studio Formafantasma, are an Italian creative duo based in Amsterdam. They are revolutionaries in the design field, having a multidisciplinary research-based practice, acting as a bridge between craft, industry, object and user. Through their path of exploration, their work has been presented internationally in museums such as New York's Museum of Modern Art and in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, London's Serpentine Galleries, Victoria & Albert museum; Centre Pompidou in Paris, and many others. Whether designing for a client or investigating alternative applications of materials, Studio Formafantasma apply the same rigorous attention to context, process and detail to every project they undertake. The added nuance for the duo is that they do so with an eye to the historical, political and social forces that have shaped their environments. Esteemed design critics listed their studio amongst a handful of practices that would shape the future of design.Hosts: Elizabeth Zhivkova and Farah PiriyeSign up for ZEITGEIST19's newsletter at https://www.zeitgeist19.comFor sponsorship enquiries, comments, ideas and collaborations, email us at info@zeitgeist19.com
