Jen Blazina: Casting Lost Memories and Forgotten Voices in Glass

Perceiving her role as a record keeper, artist Jen Blazina captures the essence of lost memories and forgotten voices. Through her work, she holds onto fragments of personal history, transforming common objects into poignant relics of the past. Her visual narratives express universal concepts of memory, inviting audiences to connect with the stories she preserves.  Blazina states: “Memory is embodied in everything around us: in our culture, beliefs, objects, and ourselves. Discarded objects and those passed down to me become personal keepsakes and icons of the past, rather than overlooked or regarded as useless. My collections represent a sense of holding onto a place in time. By re-creating these keepsakes, I re-cast their history into my own voice.” A sculptor and printmaker who uses glass as her primary medium, Blazina currently resides in Philadelphia where she is a working artist and professor at Drexel University in the College of Media Arts and Design. Blazina's work can be found in multiple collections such as the Neuberger Museum of Art, The Imagine Museum, The Cranbrook Museum of Art, and the Corning Museum of Glass, to name a few.  The artist has been awarded numerous residencies including: the Corning Artist in Residency at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York; GAPP Residency at Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo, OH; Bezalel Art and Design Academy in Jerusalem, Israel; and the Creative Glass Center of America in Millville, NJ.  She has also been awarded prestigious grants such as the Bessie and Louis Stein Fellowship; Independence Foundation Grant; and a National Endowment for the Arts Grant. Nominated for the 2022 Pew Fellowship Award, Blazina received her M.F.A. in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art, her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College in New York and her B.F.A., cum laude, from the State University of New York at Purchase College.  Blazina is represented by Habatat Detroit Fine Art in Royal Oak, MI; Blue Spiral 1 in Asheville, NC; Vetri Glass Gallery in Seattle, WA; Kittrell Riffkind Gallery in Dallas, TX; Bullseye Projects in Portland, OR; and Koelsch Gallery in Houston, TX.  In 2025, Blazina will have work on view at the Bergstrom Mahler Museum of Glass, Neenah, WI, in New Art on the Block: Selections from the Permanent Collections, October 31, 2024 – April 6, 2025; in Object Memory, Jen Blazina and Ash Smith at 20*20 Gallery, Lansdowne, PA, February 22 –  April 15; in Through a Window Darkly, The Works of Jen Blazina at the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass, April 24 to October 5, 2025; in Collections at Blue Spiral 1 Gallery, Asheville, NC, May 2 – June 25; and in Glass 53: International Glass Invitational at Habatat Fine Art Gallery, Royal Oak, MI, May 1 – September 6. She will teach Alternative Approaches to Printmaking and Glass at Corning Museum of Glass Studios, Corning, NY, June 16 – June 21; and In Pursuit of Light: Kiln Casting at Glass Furnace, Istanbul, Turkey, August 25 – August 29. Says Blazina: “As an artist, I am intrigued with the idea that what is precious to one person will be discarded by another. My work is influenced by commonplace possessions, familial vignettes and photographs. These evoke an ephemeral sense of past memories. Whether found in a second-hand shop or passed down from my family, I am often attracted to and captivated by the lost beauty of subtle images and materials. By re-creating and casting momentos in glass and metal, I can capture and hold on to another time in the past. Photographs and chosen objects allude to narratives of fleeting moments.” UPCOMING EVENTS New Art On The Block: Selections From The Permanent Collections Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass Neenah, WI Dates: October 31 – April 6, 2025 Object Memory, Jen Blazina and Ash Smith 20*20 Gallery Lansdowne, PA Dates: February 22 – April 15 Through a Window Darkly, The Works of Jen Blazina Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass Neenah, WI Opening: April 24 Dates: April 24 to October 5 Collections Blue Spiral 1 Gallery Asheville, NC Opening Reception: May 2, 5 – 7 pm Dates: May 2 – June 25 Glass 53: International Glass Invitational Habatat Fine Art Gallery Royal Oak, MI Opening: May 3, 8 pm Dates: May 1- September 6 Alternative Approaches to Printmaking and Glass Corning Museum of Glass Studios Corning, NY Dates: June 16- June 21 In Pursuit of Light: Kiln Casting Glass Furnace Istanbul, Turkey Dates: August 25 – August 29

Mirte van de Nat and Geert Kruijswijk, are the co-founders of “Due to curiosity”, a Brainport start-up with a social purpose, best know for its “Navigating stress” toolkit, which is a playful way for a serious conversation about stress and its impact on mental health. In this Edition of Ralu on Board, Ralu Nistor-Lustermans had the opportunity to hear from Mirte and Geert, about their entrepreneurial journey and how a Design Academy student project ended up becoming a market product with a purpose on shifting the conversation on stress and mental health from curative to preventative. “Preventative solutions are not the sexiest, it is easier to buy pain killers than vitamins”, mentions Geert and despite this challenge Mirte and Geert are aware that their product is something that the society desperately needs, as the figures, around the cost of people falling out due to burnout or the cost of people leaving the companies because there is no attention to their development and well-being, are raising. This podcast is packed with insights in the ups and downs of a start-up, on what it takes to gain visibility and market, when your ideas are ahead of the market, and how designing, analysing, realising, and adjusting to the market current needs while not forgetting about the bigger idea, needs to be balanced with dreaming and getting things done when you are an entrepreneur with a social purpose.

1. Unsere neue Website geht in 2 Wochen live. 2.

Itay Noy is an Israeli watchmaker, designer and artist who creates limited-edition timepieces in his independent studio in the Old Jaffa. Since the year 2000 Itay Noy's timepieces combine true craftsmanship with out-of-the-box designs, meant to induce philosophical perspectives on the concept of time. Itay make about 120 pieces a year, all his own original designs, using components & movements of the highest quality integrated with in-house dynamic dials, modules and complications. Ace Jewelers' CEO Alon Ben Joseph and mastermind Itay Noy are long-time personal friends. They have many mutual interests, besides watchmaking. There are also many ties running back-and-forth between their home countries. Mr. Noy graduated with a BFA from the Jewelry department in the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, followed by a M.Des. from the Design Academy in Eindhoven. His work has been exhibited in museums around the world and acquired by important collections such as those of the Israel Museum, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, the Charles Bronfman Collection in New York and the Droog Collection in Amsterdam. He is the recipient of nine prizes, including the Andy Prize for the Arts, the Israeli Ministry of Culture Prize and the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Prize. Since 2005 he lectures on timepiece making and design at the Bezalel Academy Of Art and Design in Jerusalem. Ace Jewelers has been a proud authorized dealer of Itay Noy watches. Since the demand for Noy's watches are so high and his production capacity so limited, he reverted back to a model of Direct-To-Consumer. But, we at Ace Jewelers are very much ambassadors of Mr. Itay Noy and his artisan timepieces of art. In this interview they discussed creativity, art and timekeeping with the very modest and creative Itay Noy. The way he works on a smaller piece of paper is basically similar to when he makes a large mural: by zooming in and out on his own methods he can work on many different surfaces and sizes. This week's podcast episode wraps up our comparison of five different print on demand (POD) platforms to Zazzle!  This has been a really fun series, and we hope that you've gotten a lot of value out of it.  In this final comparison, we're diving into the details of Minted compared to Zazzle. Minted is a more prestigious brand that shoppers go to looking for high-end and luxury paper items or art. While there are definitely some big draws to the platform, there are also some serious cons that you should be aware of if you're considering Minted for your online business journey. Here are the different criteria we touch upon: Ease of Use Cost Number of Potential Customers Earnings Potential Exclusive Rights to Design on Minted  Product Availability Niche or Type of Market Attracted Design Versatility Production Efficiency  We hope that this episode opens you up to the hoops you have to jump through to potentially sell your designs on Minted, and all the red tape that comes along with that. Furthermore, we hope that this series has given you all the facts you need to decide which POD platform is right for you. Another week, another POD platform comparison! This episode continues to give you the chance to learn more about online business platforms to help decide which is right for you. Today, we (Jen and Elke) are doing something a bit different, since Etsy is not as straightforward of a POD (Print on Demand). Nonetheless, we're bringing you a comparison between two popular online selling platforms: Zazzle and Etsy.  Etsy is a majorly popular platform in today's world - for both buyers and sellers alike! It's a household name, but even so, you may not have all the relevant information about selling on the platform. There's a lot to know, so we do our best to break it down here! Here are the different criteria we touch upon: What is Etsy? Today, I (Elke) talk about the common struggles Zazzle sellers face and how you can work towards beating them. Society has conditioned us to think that we MUST struggle to achieve our goals, but I (Elke) am here to challenge that thought. When you enroll in the Profit by Design Academy®, you'll soon see that working only 20 hours a month can help you build a passive income. When done correctly, you'll end up with the six-figure income you've dreamt about. In this episode I cover: Why Reduce the Struggle? Why Struggling Can Prohibit You From Reaching Your Full Potential Overcoming Your Own Struggles This doesn't go to say that you don't have to work hard to achieve success on Zazzle - you certainly do have to put the effort in. But, you also don't have to struggle the way you may think. Open your mind to that wonderful possibility and alter your mindset to escape the struggle and step into progress. Designer, futurist, activist and artist Dror Benshetrit grew up in Tel Aviv, drawing, and building puppetry or sculptures. But it was Dror's experience serving in the Israeli army that showed him all the different ways his creative thinking could be applied - compelling him to pursue design and attend the Design Academy in Eindhoven. Afterwards, he moved to New York - where his career exploded - from designing the Peacock Chair showcased in a Rihanna video to designing luxury houses for the Crown Sheik. Since then, he stepped back and began rethinking how we understand the future of the built environment, embarking on tying together research, design, architecture and urban planning through Supernature Labs.
