MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Dec 21st        Publish Date:  Dec 20th     Commercial: Henssler :15   From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.  Today is Thursday, December 21st and Happy 74th Birthday to actor Samuel L. Jackson. I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Cobb Fire Demonstrates Dangers of Dry Christmas Trees Investigators Solve 51-year-old Marietta Cold Case   Cobb Rejects Request to Modify Guns Out of Mableton Home Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss raw milk. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  BREAK: CU of GA  STORY 1: Cobb Fire Demonstrates Dangers of Dry Christmas Trees Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services in Georgia conducted a demonstration to emphasize the fire hazards associated with dry Christmas trees. The department set two trees ablaze inside its fire training tower, with the first tree, properly watered and maintained, barely burning for a few seconds before extinguishing. The second tree, left unwatered and unmaintained, quickly became engulfed in flames, highlighting the danger of dry trees during the holiday season. The demonstration aimed to raise awareness about the importance of regularly watering Christmas trees to prevent them from becoming highly combustible and posing a fire risk. STORY 2: No. 10: Investigators Solve 51-year-old Marietta Cold Case In 2023, Cobb County's cold case investigators closed the 1972 murder case of nine-year-old Debbie Lynn Randall, who was kidnapped, raped, and murdered. The assailant, William B. Rose of Mableton, was identified through reexamined DNA evidence. Rose died by suicide in 1974. The case had remained a mystery for over 50 years, with investigators pursuing countless leads and even working with a psychic. Melvin Randall, Debbie's brother, expressed relief and mentioned that he wished his late mother could witness the resolution of his sister's case. In October, Girls Inc. of Greater Atlanta dedicated a butterfly garden to Debbie. STORY 3: Cobb Rejects Request to Modify Guns Out of Mableton Home The Cobb Board of Commissioners denied James Frank's request to modify guns on his Mableton property for online sale and gun shows. Frank sought temporary approval, explaining that he would add trigger mechanisms, necessitating a higher federal firearms license classification from the ATF. The Mableton Improvement Coalition opposed the request, arguing that gun manufacturing wasn't suitable for a residential neighborhood. Concerns included potential safety issues and increased crime. Despite Frank's claims of a hobby, evidence suggested a business, leading Commissioner Monique Sheffield to express reservations and motion for denial, which the board approved unanimously. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.  We'll be right back  Break: ESOG STORY 4: Smyrna Council Approves Pay Increase For Employees The Smyrna City Council unanimously approved a 4.8% pay increase for city employees, allocating $952,691 over six months. The raise comprises $585,989 for cost-of-living adjustments and $363,300 for merit-based increases, ranging from 1.5% to 3.5% based on yearly evaluations. The salary adjustments will be effective from December 25 through the end of the fiscal year in June. Mayor Derek Norton highlighted the competitive job market and expressed the city's commitment to taking care of its staff. Additionally, the council approved funding for a dehumidification system for the Wolfe Recreation Center pool and a budget amendment for the Turf Field Project. STORY 5: Cobb Says 'No' to Warehouses in Chastain Road Development The Cobb Board of Commissioners rejected a major mixed-use development proposed for Chastain Road, urging a reworking of the project without warehouses. The Atlanta-based Strategic Real Estate Partners had proposed three warehouses, up to 135 townhomes, 200 age-restricted apartments, and retail space. Commissioner JoAnn Birrell called on the developer to remove the warehouses and return with a revised site plan focused on housing, retail, and office space. Over 60 people opposed the project, primarily due to the warehouses. The developer will evaluate the possibility of a revised proposal without warehouses and assess its economic viability. We'll be back in a moment  Break: DRAKE – INGLES 9 STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is Bruce Jenkins' conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss raw milk. G'day, I'm Pete Seligman. There are a growing number of people thinking about buying a business in this region, but it can be hard to see what that actually looks like. So to help bring one part of that process to life, I've teamed up with my mates Jason Andrew and James Frank to throw some businesses on the table and share our raw thoughts on each. This is Eta down under. We hope you enjoy it. In the latest segment of "ETA Down Under," we embark on an exploration of a thriving excavation business, initially captivated by its impressive presentation and robust 10 million dollars in revenue. Specializing in critical water and sewer infrastructure, stormwater solutions, and holding Sydney Water accreditation, the business stands as a preferred partner for top-tier corporations. As financial considerations unfold, red flags are raised regarding EBITDA usage, specifically in light of a million-dollar fleet of equipment impacting perceived profitability. James Frank introduces the concept of sustainable future earnings, prompting a nuanced discussion on owner involvement, team engagement, and the intricacies of transitioning to a new operator. Leaders in Civil Excavation Revenue $10m EBITDA $2m Link: https://resolve.com.au/business/transportation-infrastructure/leaders-in-civil-excavation Located in Sydney, the company is the preferred partner for numerous top-tier corporations, renowned for their expertise in critical water and sewer infrastructure, stormwater solutions, pumping stations, precision bore and inspection pits, and a comprehensive suite of Civil Excavation Services. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: According to the non-partisan academic study of the Texas House in operation this year by Mark Jones at Rice University's James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, Lubbock's state Rep. Dustin Burrows was the most Left-of-GOP-center state rep from NW Texas. That is a shocking change but understandable in what I've observed in a general attitude of being part of the leadership team (Phelan, et. al. / big man on campus syndrome) being more important than much of anything else. It is sad but I've watched it up close – and more sadly, it's not the first time I've witnessed such at close range.Consistent with past sessions is that a good number of state reps from NW Texas, supposedly the most conservative part of the state, are also Left-of-GOP-center. Representatives such as Abilene's Stan Lambert; Odessa's Brooks Landgraf; Amarillo's Four Price; Wichita Falls' James Frank; Canadian's Ken King, and; San Angelo's Drew Darby. (Price, King, and Darby have always been among the most non-conservative Republican state reps.)Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Not only did the Texas House spend a million MORE on impeachment than what the Paxton-AG Office employee settlement would have cost, the House committee run by Rep. Murr[stache] paid $32,000 of our money to a public relations firm. This proves beyond any doubt that the entire operation was a political hit job otherwise there is no need for P.R. services. The State Board of Education (SBOE) did what was right and adopts the READER Act to help the effort to keep sexually explicit material from Texas public school libraries.Much important SpaceX news including:  FCC denies Starlink $886 million grant for rural broadband Musk fires back at FCC decision to cancel its $886 million Starlink grant award Update on Starship/Superheavy work at Boca Chica Starbase SpaceX's Starbase boss: South Texas to remain ‘premier' Starship site – hugely important for Texas Listen on the radio, or station stream, at 5pm Central. In the latest "Eta Down Under" segment, we delved into the potential acquisition of a high-end beauty business in Queensland. Despite its 4.2 million dollars in revenue and 900 thousand dollars in earnings, we expressed skepticism about scalability and raised concerns about the discretionary nature of the industry, cyclicality, and potential revenue decline. We discussed challenges in creative businesses, particularly jewelry, scrutinizing intellectual property protection, scalability, and the potential for navigating larger corporate customers. Premium candle, body-products, & gifts business Brisbane-based Inhouse manufacturing of biggest selling product, import suite of other products sells to large network of retails (B2B) and D2C through online channels EBITDA: $0.9m Part-time owner, skilled team in place 2,800+ B2B clients including several contracted customers Link to enquire: https://resolve.com.au/business/wholesale-trade/highend-home-body-and-gift-business Manufacturer and wholesaler of high-end homewares, jewellery, and giftware products marketed under company-owned brands, which are positioned at the premium end of the market. The business has a strong network of suppliers for its whole range, including its contract-manufactured jewellery range. Perfect bolt-on acquisition for trade buyers looking to enter or expand in the gift, e-commerce, homewares, or bath & body product sectors. The verdict on whether we decided to embrace or pass on this intriguing venture? Well, you'll have to tune in to the next episode of "Eta Down Under" to find out! Thanks for listening. So to help bring one part of that process to life, I've teamed up with my mates Jason Andrew and James Frank to throw some businesses on the table and share our raw thoughts on each. This is 'Eta Down Under'. We hope you enjoy it! In our inaugural episode, Jason introduces a diverse range of businesses, from a vertically integrated pallets venture to a high-end home and gift business. We delve into opportunities, exploring a 4-million-dollar rental solutions business and a 7-million-dollar engineering gem in southeast Queensland. The spotlight turns to the pallets business, dissecting its manufacturing dynamics, selling strategies, and the challenges of the rental model. Jason's insights spark a spirited conversation on potential innovations, regional significance, pricing strategies, and operational intricacies. Pallet Manufacturer Regional NSW (within 2 hrs of Sydney): Pallet Manufacturer EBITDA: $1.7-1.9m Under Mgt Link to enquire: https://resolve.com.au/business/manufacturing/vertically-integrated-pallet-business Pallet manufacturing business with "mill on wheels" and commercial agreement for wood supply. Competitively advantaged with supply of wood (very valuable after bushfires has restricted competitors ability to supply their clients). The owner has invested heavily and this business is growing on the back of blue chip clients, both of which are growing. A trailer-mill allows the business to cut wood to size, reducing offcuts and stock wastage. Production/General manager runs the daily operations with non-exec owner living interstate. Long before Russell Westbrook was benched down the stretch of Wednesday's 111-104 loss to the Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers coach Frank Vogel was given assurances that the organization would support him in taking a hard line while coaching the star, sources told ESPN. Over the past week and a half, Lakers management has told the coaching staff to coach Westbrook as the coaches see fit, even if that means pulling him from a game, as Vogel did for the final 3 minutes, 52 seconds of the fourth quarter against Indiana, sources told ESPN. One source close to the situation described the message from management to the staff as, "You got to do what you got to do."Westbrook was 5-for-17 from the field when Vogel put in Malik Monk for him with L.A. trailing 101-94. Apart from his offensive struggles, Westbrook failed to execute on the defensive end. The final straw, pushing the staff to honor their instinct to bench him, was when Caris LeVert blew by Westbrook on defense for a layup with 7 minutes, 13 seconds remaining. youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcPwusazrRs #losangeles #lalakers #lakers #lebronjames #nba #basketball #russellwestbrook #sports #players #news

No dear listeners and readers, that is not a typo. Eric Widera is indeed our guest today to discuss his first author publication in the New England Journal of Medicine, Family Meetings on Behalf of Patients with Serious Illness. Our other guests include other authors James Frank, Wendy Anderson, Lekshmi Santhosh, me and actress and frequent GeriPal guest-host Anne Kelly. There's a story behind this one folks. One day, Ken Covinsky walked into our office and said, "You know how the NEJM has this Videos in Clinical Medicine series? With videos like, 'How to insert a central venous catheter?' You should send them a video of your palliative care 'intervention' - how to conduct a family meeting." Brilliant idea. Well...that was 2014...a funny thing happened on the way to the theater. After several iterations, videos, reviews, a rejection, and lessons in persistence, we finally published. We were helped by an outstanding cast who role played the family meeting in the video (including Wendy as the physician and Anne as the social worker). The video introduces clinicians to core family meeting skills such as the importance of the pre-meeting, a structured approach to the meeting, and pointers on how to respond to emotion. On the podcast, we go around the "zoom room" and discuss our favorite teaching points on how to conduct family meetings. And a bonus feature! Eric requested any song from the Movie "The Descendants," and I was fortunate to be joined by my kids Kai and Renn on guitar and ukulele on the traditional Hawaiian song "Hi'ilawe." Grateful also to Jeff Peterson for pointers on the Hawaiian pronunciation. You may notice when you listen that I purchased some recording equipment for my home study, as this COVID thing doesn't seem to have an end in sight...I may have gone overboard with the production, forgive me listeners! Enjoy! -Alex

Many blessings accompany a long ministry with the same people. James Frank shepherded a flock for 40 years and challenges those who aspire to pastoral ministry. About Our Guest James Frank serves as pastor emeritus for Galilee Baptist Church in Saranac, Michigan, a church he had pastored for over 40 years. He graduated from Bob Jones University and Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary. He has been married to his wife Beth since 1960 and the Lord has blessed them with two children, three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Featured Resource Association of Certified Biblical Counselors: Increase your skill in bringing God’s Word to people in need of help and hope. What You Will Learn “The seminary is so wonderful to remember, but ... being in the ministry itself really sharpens everything. It becomes more valuable than the seminary itself.” Welcoming veteran missionaries into the home encourages obedient faith. His call to the ministry of preaching and teaching came by working with chain gang prisoners in Rock Hill, South Carolina in the 1950s. “I came to Galilee [in 1964] for $40 a week and it seemed like a million because I was able to preach.” How the church went from no godly, capable men to an abundance of them. What to do when hypocrites are in the church. How AWANA has been useful as a tremendous community influence. How area churches can work together and why this is important. God brings growth to the church through the faithful preaching of His Word. “I felt that rather than have a beautiful building, it was important for us to have a cathedral of truth, that we would not have anything to say except what was in the text and that the truth would be there and be evident in the text.” How to retire from pastoral ministry and what to do next. How a return to the church after retiring could look like. “I think we do not need more ministers. We need more ministers that are called of God.” “If you aspire to the ministry, you need to learn to study. You need to pay attention to books. You also need to pay attention to speech.” Listen to the interview with Andy Mooren, who succeeded Jim as pastor for Galilee Baptist Church.Support the show (https://diligentpastors.com/donate/)

You are caring for two adults with COVID-19. One who is a previously healthy 70 year old. One is 55 with multiple medical comorbidities. Both are now requiring mechanical ventilation, but there is only one ventilator left in the hospital and all attempts to transfer the patients to another hospital for care have failed. Which patient would you give the life saving treatment to and why? On today's podcast with talk with Doug White, Professor of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, and James Frank, Professor of Medicine and fellowship director for the UCSF Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship, about this type of tragic choice that we may soon be making if we do not flatten the curse on the COVID-19 pandemic (for more on that, check out our last podcast with Lona Mody). If you don't think that would be even remotely possible, just read this quote from a NEJM article that came out yesterday: Quote: "Though the physicians I spoke with were clearly not responsible for the crisis in capacity, all seemed exquisitely uncomfortable when asked to describe how these rationing decisions were being made. My questions were met with silence — or the exhortation to focus solely on the need for prevention and social distancing. When I pressed Dr. S., for instance, about whether age-based cutoffs were being used to allocate ventilators, he eventually admitted how ashamed he was to talk about it. 'This is not a nice thing to say,' he told me. 'You will just scare a lot of people.'" In our podcast we reference a fair amount of articles and resources. Links to the following articles and resources can be found on our website at GeriPal.org : - Who Should Receive Life Support During a Public Health Emergency? Chest 2019 - Meeting the challenge of pandemic influenze: ethics guidance for leaders and health care professionals in the Veterans Health Administration - Ventilator Allocation Guidelines:New York State Task Force on Life and the LawNew York State Department of Health - NYT interview with Italian ICU director in Bergamo, Italy. Covid19 is changing the way we interact with each other (from 6 feet away or via Zoom) the way we care for out patients (increasingly by video or telephone) and for some unfortunate few, the way we die (alone, in a hospital for days, isolated from family and friends). This is the first podcast in a series of podcasts about Covid 19. In this first podcast we talk with Lona Mody, Professor of Medicine at Michigan Medicine and John Mills, Associate Epidemiologist with Michigan Medicine. We cover terminology, epidemiology of the disease, and what we can do to protect our older and vulnerable patients. We also provide a new suggestion for a 22 second song you can sing while washing your hands in lieu of happy birthday (some of us are sick of singing happy birthday so many times a day). Our next podcast, to be released tomorrow, will be with Doug White and James Frank on the ethics of rationing ventilators. In both podcasts, we refer to this New York Times Daily podcast with Dr. Marco in Milan Italy titled, “It’s Like a War.” Every day they admit 50-70 patients with severe pneumonia due to Coronavirus infection to their 1000 bed hospital. More than half of the hospital is filled with Coronavirus infections. 460 nurses are home sick or in home quarantine due to contact with infected patients. They’re admitting their colleagues. 20 patients died from Coronavirus in one day. He talks about rationing ICU beds by age. He says, “My colleagues, both physicians and nurses, they cry everyday.” Important take away from both podcasts: Flatten. The. Curve. Now. -@AlexSmithMD

Called "the Storyteller of the Southwest," James Frank Dobie was born in 1888 on a ranch in Live Oak County. Throughout his life, he lived astride two worlds: the old-time Texas of his family's cattle ranch and the state's modern centers of scholarly learning. The focus of Dobie's career was to record and publicize the disappearing folklore of the Southwest.
