In this episode of the Defence Connect podcast, Dr Jason Lim, from the University of Wollongong, joins host and former student Steve Kuper to discuss China's history of engaging with Southeast Asia, the impact of the Cold War, and the political concerns of the region's Chinese diaspora. The pair begin the podcast detailing China's long history of engaging and influencing the Southeast Asian nations, dating back to the pre-colonial era, and the role this long history continues to play in the way Southeast Asian nations engage with the rising superpower. They then discuss how the Cold War never really ended in the region, with the ideological, economic, political, and strategic competition between China and the United States continuing to simmer behind the scenes despite the collapse of the Soviet Union. Finally, the pair discuss the economic, political, and cultural influence of the region's Chinese diaspora and how Australia's neighbours have embraced members of the Chinese community and a shared history to help balance national interests with national security concerns. Host Krist Boo discusses happiness at work in this episode of Work Talk, a podcast to help you work smarter, think deeper and get ahead in your work life. In the workplace, 80 per cent of workers say "yes" when asked if they enjoy their work, says Gallup chief executive, Mr Jon Clifton. But ask about their relationships with co-workers and their boss, and they start getting miserable. Can managers do anything that will make our lives less unhappy in 2023?  After a motorbike accident in Cambodia eight years ago, Mr Jason Lim spent 40 days in a coma. He was 24. The doctor had his death certificate prepared. How would an experience like this change your view of happiness?     His colleague at SGTech - marketing manager Ms Low Rui Yin - says she's always harried, annoyed, and wanting to be better, quicker, perfect. But this year, maybe the status quo is enough.  Join Krist Boo's conversation with Mr Lim, Ms Low and Mr Clifton. It's the 20th episode! And I was waiting for this one since my first post on Instagram (it's been almost a year!). Instruo is in its own league when it comes to innovation. And I'm not talking only about the design, the interface, and aesthetics. From the naming of modules to how the company operates, they seem to be doing things in their own unique way. I talked to Jason Lim, who founded the company from a spare bedroom in Glasgow around 2016. They are currently 22 designers and engineers, and the company operates more like a music label than a conventional synth manufacturer. This is a deep dive conversation with lots of insight into design. Jason shares his techniques for interface design and goes through the various iterations for different modules. We also talk about future products (3 more VCOs!), module naming in Scottish Gaelic, MosCoW (a feature prioritization technique), and a pretty unconventional business model (to say the least!). According to the recent Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry's (SCCCI) annual business survey, nearly two in five or almost 40 per cent of respondents predicted a drop in revenue. Just over 82 per cent of the businesses polled said expanding the top-line was their key concern. Given tough market competition, there is a need for firms including SMEs to focus on value creation and innovation to remain competitive. These include the challenge complying with local regulations and standards. However, it is commonplace for businesses to face labour-intensive processes of filling up forms and documents without a clear timeline and direction. Digitalisation of these process could be a solution. Especially since local businesses are faced with market barriers of complying with global standards when they internationalise. Stendard aims to help local businesses simplify the long and arduous process of compliance. We speak to its co-founder and CEO, Jason Lim.
