It's New Orleans: Out to Lunch

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 23, 2022 33:02

When Louisiana native and New Orleans resident James Carville was working on Bill Clinton's campaign for president, he famously scribbled a note and pinned it to the wall. The note read, “It's the economy, stupid.” The implication being, that no matter what people say they care about, if they don't have enough money, nothing else matters. Here in New Orleans, for decades, topping the list of things people say they care about, usually right under crime, is education. We also know that, with a few exceptions, the more education you have the more money you make. So, today, Carville's famous advice could be, “It's education, stupid.” By education, we typically think of elementary school and high school. But lately we've come to learn that life-long problems with poor education-outcomes start earlier. Studies show that children under the age of 4 who receive quality Early Childhood Education are more likely to graduate high school. They earn more money. And they're more likely to own their own homes. If you're a parent with resources, you can pay for quality Early Childhood Education. If you don't have the means to do that, you can send your children to publicly funded pre-school. But in New Orleans, 70% of low-income children under the age of 4 don't have access to publicly funded, quality, Early Childhood Education. An organization called Agenda For Children is trying to change that. Agenda For Children works to train Early Childhood education teachers, and to create access to early Childhood Education for all New Orleans families. Jen Roberts is CEO of Agenda For Children. This is not to say that all we have to do in New Orleans is get kids under 4 in a good pre-school and in a generation everything will magically improve. We'll still need good high schools. Here in New Orleans, a “good high school” is typically one you pay to go to. Or, if you're a kid who's focused and driven enough, you can test into one of the few high-performing public high schools. But kids growing up in less-than-ideal circumstances are typically not in either of those categories. That's where an organization called Rooted School Foundation comes in. Rooted School Foundation focuses on at-risk kids who are talented or smart enough to change their lives. It gives students a way to graduate high school while also earning industry credentials in fields with growth potential, so that they can go from high school to college, or into a career in a growing field. This is not some sort of theoretical, pie-in-the-sky concept. In June 2021 Rooted New Orleans graduated its inaugural class of 38 students. 54% of them went to a 4-year college, and between them they hauled in over $1m worth of merit grants and scholarships. The visionary founder and CEO of Rooted School Foundation is Jonathan Johnson. In music and fashion, generational changes are easy to see. In business, those changes are not so obvious. But they definitely exist. The current generation is emphasizing good corporate citizenship, and work-life balance. Companies are being asked to take socially responsible positions. They're no longer seen as profit-centers responsible only to shareholders. And work is no longer regarded as a monastic calling to which you have to dedicate your entire life to succeed. Instead, a company is more prized if it is able to integrate into the wider community, and a job is more prized if it allows you live a balanced life. Early Childhood Education is the first step on the path to a parent creating work/life balance. And Rooted School Foundation is giving companies an opportunity to become corporate good citizens. Both Jen Roberts and Jonathan Johnson are involved with organizations that at first glance might seem far removed from business, but that on closer examination are vitally entwined in our local economy. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at NOLA Pizza in theNOLA Brewing Taproom. You can find photos from this show by Jill Lafleur at our website itsneworleans.com. She's a mom, wife and boss. She is an entrepreneur and family is her number one. Joining the podcast is Jen Roberts. She and husband Andy run a few businesses from martial arts to a moving company. We talk about what it is like to open a business in completely different categories and work together as a husband/wife team. She says Andy is the field guy and she handles the inside, but if you know them…you know that they are in it together. They jumped without hesitation and learned as they went — without looking back. Working as a team is not hard for the two of them. Being a mom of three brought challenges and Jen is very open with her struggles and her own anxieties—her philosophy and theme is to say how it is and move forward. Martial arts is a natural for them and they've plugged into the community in Auburn to teach in preschools, camps, and special programming. They are teaching martial arts on their own terms with Andy as a black belt and Jen with her experience makes them quite suited. We talk about working with kids and why martial arts matters with a format of love and respect and learning good manners. They teach some self defense moves that are good for any age. Exercise has always been a part of Jen's life as she grew up in the world of dancing but when she turned 21, she got a cancer diagnosis and that turned her to looking seriously as a deep need to take care of herself through a journey to be fit and nutritionally balanced. She planned all the activities she wanted to try after giving birth to her oldest child—and checked them off. Jen felt empowered learning kickboxing and being in a gym. She began to teach dancing and where she is today is exactly where she wants to be—teaching kids to love what she loves. Jen is an encourager for moms as she teaches because being a good mom is not about perfection or that it is easy and though she doesn't ever want to lose her patience, it is all about love. So she wants parents to get it that kids in these programs aren't there to be a professional athlete—take a step back and realize that your kid doesn't have to be the best. “Set boundaries and ground rules but let your child have fun and learn how to integrate into programs and learn the social cues.” We talk about pregnancy and exercise and listening to your body to do what your body allows you to do. This lady models her health behavior for her children and includes them in her workouts where they can come and go in her home gym for kickboxing and weight training. Jen can go back to how she was raised and remember her mother doing similar patterns and she thinks that impact can be important. Jen is intentional in her day to day. She expresses how precious time can be through sharing the story of her sister suffering a stroke. That event makes her even more intentional today. Tune in! I had the honour of chatting to Jen Roberts and her Mum, Eileen, (back when the weather was a tad less icy!) and it’s one of my favourite podcast episodes yet. Eileen’s insight from a mother’s perspective on what it’s like to watch your child experience infertility, miscarriage, IVF- and then to share it all on Instagram- is just so moving and important. These two are such personalities!! And both are so eloquent. I hope that lots of parents will get comfort from listening and that maybe this chat will also help you to know that the tricky feelings that come up within families as a result of all this are all really, really normal. Jen and Eileen are so real and authentic. We cover loads here including a difficult decision over what to do for Jen this Christmas with a new baby due any day now in the family. I would love for you to share this episode and let me know what you think. Jen has had a really hard time recently but was still happy for me to share this in the hope that her truth and honesty would bring comfort to others - I am so grateful for the privilege of being part of this conversation and to be able to share it with you. Fave quotes: Eileen: "I am of an age where instagram is not at the forefront of my being...I started thinking - I wouldn’t have said that! This is so personal and private...I was beside myself that she was 'airing her dirty washing in public'! But the more I read, the more I understood..." Jen: "the way you respond now is with much more empathy and understanding that I was perceiving was the case before" Eileen: "If you sat here now and you said: if you had your leg chopped off but in 9 months Jen would have a healthy baby I would say: right...let’s go. I would. Because for me: it’s a trade off I could do, to get her what she wants." thisisalicerose.com Instagram @thisisalicerose

“Without darkness, there is no light” - Rumi. On today’s episode, my guest is Jen Roberts. She is the founder of the celebrity favorite The LB Brand and newest creation House of 88. Through processing profound loss in her life, she has been able to turn her string of personal tragedies into empowered transformation. I thought Jen’s story was extraordinary for so many reasons and I also feel like grief and loss leave people….well, at a loss. It’s a part of life - and maybe the change in culture is not feeling so alone when you’re dealing with the toughest situations and seeing what can rise from the ashes. Warning: this episode contains graphic and disturbing content about suicide. Please use caution if this could be triggering. As for me, I’m building the audience in this podcast so I truly hope you’ll not only subscribe, but leave a review and continue sharing these episodes. I'm also looking for sponsors for future episodes. You can reach me by email, Instagram, or Facebook. Thanks for listening and I'll see you next week!
