Yes, we do keep banging on about medical misogyny and you'll get no apologies from us. On that note, Mickey's been on the Zoom with journalist Sarah Graham, who specialises in writing about women's health, to talk about her excellent book, Rebel Bodies: A Guide to the Gender Health Gap Revolution. Hannah's chatting to Lonely Planet writer Jade Bremner about how to do a bucket list holiday on a budget. In Jenny Off The Blocks, Jen's excited about the return of Emma Raducanu. In BT, we're banging on about electricity meters, plagiarism and hot flushes. And there's cold flushes aplenty in Rated or Dated, as well as useful info on how much a broken leg can hamper a nice walk in the mountains, as we watch 2003/4's Touching The Void. On the morning of February 4, 2015, 18-year-old Sara Graham didn't show up for her morning shift at Walmart in Pembroke, North Carolina. A few hours later, her van was found abandoned in a field halfway between Walmart and her home in Fairmont, North Carolina. There were no signs of a struggle, and the doors were locked manually. Despite a thorough investigation, Sara remains missing, and authorities are still searching for her. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Robeson County Sheriff's Office at 910-671-3100, the FBI Charlotte Office at 704-671-6100, or submit a tip online at tips.fbi.gov. There is still a $5,000 reward available for information in Sara's disappearance. On June 18, 2020, more than 1,000 miles away from North Carolina, 22-year-old Katelyn Kelley was reported missing in Shawano, Wisconsin. No one had seen or heard from her since around 3:00 am on June 17. An extensive search for Katelyn began, but tragically, almost a year later, her remains were discovered. While no official cause or manner of death has been revealed, many sources suggest that Katelyn was a homicide victim. Investigators continue looking into the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death. If you have any information, please call the Menominee Tribal Police at 715-799-3881. Both Sara Graham and Katelyn Kelley are Indigenous women whose stories have not received much attention in the media or on podcasts. Because of this, I'd like to shed light on their stories and give them the recognition they deserve. Today's episode is with Sarah Graham, founder of Matrescent Muse. Before welcoming her baby girl in May 2021, Sarah was a high school English teacher. During her maternity leave, Sarah found herself wanting to express the complex emotions she was feeling during her transition into motherhood. With pandemic-related border closures separating her from family and friends, she turned to writing. On one of her slow afternoon pram walks, an attempt to get her baby to sleep, she started mentally forming a poem about her experience which became her first postpartum poem entitled ‘Two Hearts'.Sharing her poetry online has connected Sarah with a wonderful community of mothers with whom she has been able to explore the emotions, challenges and triumphs of motherhood. Now working in publishing, Sarah's writing gives voice to the complexities of motherhood and connects mothers through the shared experiences of matrescence and parenting. In this discussion with Sarah, we talk about her own journey of matrescence, her experience of isolation during the pandemic, the themes she explores in her writing and using creativity as a medium for self-expression, community and connection. Have you ever had a health concern that you feel was dismissed? Have you been made to feel small for daring to ask questions regarding yours or your family's health? Then our guest this week will help you discover ways in which you can reset the balance and get the answers you deserve. Sarah Graham is the journalist and author behind the hugely successful book Rebel Bodies which has already been named as one of this year's most fascinating reads. Focussing on the gender health gap it is a passionate and powerful manifesto for reform in womens health care. A deep dive into to the historical context of modern day issues facing women with regards to their health today and a call to arms for how to create change within the system. The book is a revelation that looks at the treatment of women across different sectors and marginalised groups and shines a spotlight on the healthcare gaslighting facing our communities. During our chat Sarah discusses her own experience with our health care system whilst shining a light on the experience of others. She discusses, gender & race bias and the treatment of women going into menopause, alongside the concept of hysteria and it's impact on the narrative on woman's health. Sarah also notes that whilst treatment can vary we must also acknowledge the stresses and pressures facing our health care professionals and that its the system that needs reform. Listen in for a candid look at our health care and the steps we need to make to create a better future for all.

Today's guest is a truly inspirational woman, she is resilient, courageous warm and honest. We first met Sheree Hargreaves in October 2022 at the Menopause rally in Parliament square. At 15 Sheree was diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency or POI, a diagnosis that she kept hidden from her friends and family for four years. Sheree was 19 and at home during lockdown when she felt ready to discuss POI more openly, saying “when I was 15 I would have loved to have heard someone spread awareness about early menopause and make it seem like it's a bit more normal than I thought it was.” Sheree is now active within the Menopause grass roots community, raising awareness to help and support, not only teenagers but women in natural menopause too. In this Episode Sheree discusses the impact of menopause on her life at university, her ‘Granny days', how opening up has lifted a huge weight off her shoulders. She is honest about her feelings toward fertility, boyfriends and relationships and tells us that if she's not past her prime in menopause at 22 then no one is, whatever your age. Premature Ovarian Insufficiency happens when the ovaries stop functioning before the natural age of menopause. This means the ovaries no longer produce eggs and are unable to produce the hormones oestrogen and progesterone which are really important for women's health and wellbeing. Approximately one in 100 women under the age of 40, one in 1,000 women under 30, and one in 10,000 under 20 experience POI. POI can be caused by autoimmune conditions, cancer treatment, surgery or a genetics, however for 90 per cent of women diagnosed with POI, the cause is unfortunately idiopathic, meaning there is no known cause and it happens spontaneously. You can watch the full interview on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFgmHLcdx28eco-XlkWYwUA Do you know who Stan McClain from Florida is? You'll probably wish you didn't after we tell you what he's been up to! Jinty asks the question, ‘what was life like for women in medieval times?' And the answer will definitely surprise you! There's fashion news to take you back to the 1980's, but will you be brave enough to wear it? In the Book Collective we read chapter 10 of Sarah Graham's book, Rebel Bodies, and its titled, Menopausal Crones, when sexism and ageism collide, there's some shocking statistics and some lovely familiar names in the chapter. It's a chapter that will leave you furious! Jinty tells you the ingredients you'll need for our spectacular Nice Buns feature and it's all about Easter. Our guest this week is Kate Organ of The Menopause Specialists who is chatting to us about how our sex lives can change as the result of Menopause, whether this is through sex being painful, suffering from GMS (genitourinary menopause syndrome) or you find yourself single and menopausal, Kate discusses why orgasms are good for you but what if we have Hypoactive sexual desire disorder HSDD; ie low libido? Kate gives us the latest information on treatments for GMS, and we ask should you be using localised oestrogen or lubrication, or both? Menopause can have a huge impact on relationships and intimacy yet there is still much taboo and secrecy that surround it. Even the closest of friends may not discuss what is happening, or not happening in the bedroom. Kate tells us how our mental health can have a huge impact on an intimate relationship. It's not all bad either - we discuss how we can have the best sex and relationships at this time of life, finding our confidence and knowing what we want. Kate is the founder and consultant pharmacist at The Menopause Specialists South East Clinic, working alongside GP Katie Burlington. Kate completed her menopause training through the British Menopause Society and the Newson Health Menopause Society and holds numerous post graduate qualifications specialising in mental health care, leading her to be a menopause, PMS and PMDD specialist. She strongly believes in a holistic approach to health and says ‘We want every woman to have a positive experience of the menopause and perimenopause'. You can watch the full interview on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFgmHLcdx28eco-XlkWYwUA We find out that Boris Johnson is wanting to bestow a knighthood on his father, Stanley Johnson. And ask should this be allowed after Stanley has been accused of domestic violence? Jinty investigates how Spain are leading the way into research on measuring acceptability of intimate violence against women and it's significance in normalising domestic abuse. Do you feel overwhelmed when you have a full diary of meetings and events planned? Lou asks if this is an after effect of the pandemic or if we want to slow the pace in menopause. In our Book Collective we read chapter 9 of Rebel Bodies by Sarah Graham, ‘Death means we believe you now. Neurotic mothers in healthcare. We read the emotive stories of Claire Norton and her daughter Merryn, Steph and her daughter Daisy and the force of nature Caron Ryalls the mother of Emily. In this week's episode we chat to the wonderful Dr Aziza Sesay, an NHS GP, a GP educator, Honorary Senior Clinical lecturer, speaker and health content creator who has a passion for health education, awareness, advocacy and empowerment. She channels this through her platform 'Talks with Dr. Sesay' where she shares short informative videos, live discussions and tips on a variety of topics with a particular emphasis on women's and gynaecological health, cancer awareness, mental health and health inequity. Her goal is to equip and empower individuals with knowledge in the hope of preventing disease or at least moderating their progression. With a 3 year waiting list for some NHS Gynaecology departments in the UK it is important to seek the correct, evidenced based information to gain the most from an appointment and to understand what may be happening in your own body. This is a must listen whether you have just began menstruating, are in post menopause and everything in between. Dr Sesay busts some myths regarding heavy and/or painful periods, painful sex, Menopause, vaginal sweets, ‘intimate' cleaning products & more. We discuss how using the correct anatomical language such as vulva and vagina can actually save lives. Find out why women & people with vaginas are more prone to UTI's and what we can do about it (loads of great tips). Cervical smear tests, speculums, lube, the 5 main gynaecological Cancers and what to look for. This links into other news this week that only 22% of males would take a male contraceptive pill even though it is more effective than the oral combined female contraceptive pill, just another gender health gap? In the Book Collective we read chapter 6 of Sarah Graham's must read book. Rebel Bodies, the chapter is titled, ‘Can you get a penis in and a baby out,' The pleasure gap in sexual health, and once again it makes for shocking reading, from the vaginal mesh scandal through to IUD's and female sexual dysfunction, the accounts from the women are astounding, a book everyone should read. There's a fantastic quote this week too from Serena Williams, and a new WI. It's another episode jam packed with chat, your comments, and all the usual shenanigans. There is a hidden crisis on the streets in England it is estimated that around 8000 people are sleeping rough every night and a growing percentage of rough sleepers are women. The Connection at St Martin in the Fields support people sleeping rough in the heart of London. The Connection opens their doors to everyone who needs a place to call home helping them to recover and find their way off the streets, getting to know everyone they work with. Our guest today is Ellie Greenhalgh, women's development unit (WDU) manager with The Connection at St Martin's who work with Solace Women's Aid to provide a safe space for homeless women. Ellie discusses with us the link between violence against women and girls and homelessness, and tells us that almost all women sleeping rough have experienced gendered violence in their lives, yet homelessness among women has received less attention from policy makers, the media, and in some cases service providers, resulting in a gap between women's needs and existing service provision. We discuss these gaps and what the WDU are doing to close them. We hear how Women's homelessness is often invisible meaning they cannot access the correct support and the importance of gathering realistic data for women on the streets. Ellie talks to us about the importance of changing the narrative for homeless females and why menstrual care and ensuring a safe space is vital for the women and how a new census collecting more comprehensive data for homeless women will hopefully start to make changes. We also learn the best ways we can all aid and support women who sleep rough. Did you know the UK government's credit card bill for 2021 was £145 million? Jinty looks into the more bizarre items they've been spending tax payers money on. Housework who does it in your house? Philosophers are arguing about how men and women perceive domestic chores, we discuss why some men are housework blind. In the Book Collective we continue with Sarah Graham's bestselling book, Rebel Bodies. We thought we could not be any more shocked but after reading chapter 5, All in Your Head: Mental Health and Hysteria the gaping disparities within the health service are shocking. We tell you about our WI challenge during vulva cancer awareness month and there's a fantastic quote. It's another episode jam packed with chat, your comments, and all the usual shenanigans. Whilst Ministers reject mandatory menopause training for GPs we have some good news for Devon and our #wheresmyclinic Menopause Clinic for Devon Campaign that we share in this episode. Lou looks at the statistics that show sex can be better in menopause and how destructive journalism from female journalists is harming women's mental health. Have you tried looking for images on the internet of menopausal women? Why is there such a lack of diversity and under representation? We discuss how this needs to change. For the first time in history a public holiday has been named after a woman. This week, Ireland celebrated a brand new Public holiday on 1st February called Saint Brigids day and Jinty investigates who St Brigid is and why we should all be a bit more St Brigid. If you think you cause mayhem you might want to think again when we explain the true meaning of the word, with the story of Bertha Boronda from 1908. Who doesn't like a Brussel sprout? Well, this little vegetable gets our scrutiny this week. In the Book Collective we continue reading Sarah Graham's book, Rebel Bodies, a guide to the gender health gap revolution. We hear from the listeners who are reading along with us. It's an emotive chapter that has some shocking stories and statistics about the failing of the health service for women and the LGBTQ+ community and why there is a ‘fatphobia' in medicine. We complete the balance WI set by our lovely listener, Els, you can watch how we got on our Instagram page @womenkindcollective and we have a new one linked to St Brigid. There's a fantastic quote for you this week too. It's another episode brimming with chat, laughter, your comments, and all the usual shenanigans. If you have trouble sleeping you won't want to miss this episode. Our guest this week is the absolutely brilliant Sarah Wilde an insomnia coach and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist for Insomnia (CBTi). This method is a way to reset your sleep with no supplements, pills or sprays needed and now Sarah uses this to form the foundation of her Meno-insomnia® Method coaching programme which can teach you how to get a good night's sleep so that you wake up feeling like YOU again. Often, sleep problems are one of the first symptoms women experience in peri menopause, with 40 to 60% of menopausal women experiencing sleep issues. So, Sarah went back to basics and looked at the science and research which confirmed what she knew from experience- that CBTi had been proven to be a natural solution for perimenopausal & post-menopausal people with insomnia. Sarah says that she can ‘help women sleep better naturally so that they can have the energy to do what they want.' In this interview Sarah explains the positives of sleep drive and our Circadian rhythm and how having good sleep hygiene can be a positive until the rituals and habits stop working. We discuss the physiology of how Menopause affects out sleep, why does our body temperature make a difference? She gives you some great tips on how to aid better sleep, whether your sleep is broken, or you have trouble getting off to sleep. You can watch the full unedited interview on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFgmHLcdx28eco-XlkWYwUA The gender health gap comes into the conversation this week and not just with our brilliant book club book, Jinty discusses the severe and damaging short comings from the first peered review paper written by expert doctors and scientists who treat chronic urinary tract infections how the medical profession is failing around 1.7 million patients. In the Book Collective we continue with Sarah Graham's Rebel Bodies, in chapter 2 the gaping gender health gap around menstrual and hormonal health throws up some shocking research. We are back with Series 6 of the Womenkind Collective weekly Podcast where we (Jinty & Lou) embark on a fun and educational journey, talking to experts and advocates on subjects that are often taboo We hit the ground running this series with the wonderful Dr Ginni Mansberg who chats with us about hormones, menopause and skin. We discuss eczema, rosacea, acne and find out why our skin drops a little as we age, and ask, is there anything we can do to make the most of the skin we have. We talk collagen supplements, nutrition and HRT. We ask can synthetic progestin give you acne? And With so many ‘menopause' skin brands out there Dr Ginni tells us what to avoid and what to look for in a great product. Our hormones don't only affect the skin on our face, what about our Vaginas? Dr Ginni explains how menopause impacts our vaginas and vulvas, and it's not just about penetrative sex, we go deep into ph levels, and discuss the importance of seeking treatment sooner rather than later, and what the very simple treatments might entail. Dr Ginni Mansberg has been a GP for almost 30 years her practice is in Sydney, Australia, she has appeared on Embarrassing Bodies Down under (as an expert we might add), giving advice on various radio stations, and magazines. As a GP she has a special interest in menopause and is the author of the best-selling book, The M Word, how to Thrive in Menopause. Dr Ginni also started ‘Don't Sweat It' to help menopausal women thrive in the workplace. As if that is not enough, Dr Ginni has enjoyed a career in Medical journalism and started her own skin care company, Evidence Skin or ESK where she is still the Medical Director. We start with reading chapter 1, The Personal is Political. Sarah goes back to Hippocrates where the use of the word hystera for uterus, hysteria is an over-used word for women suffering from period pain to heart attacks and their voices can go unheard. We have a brand new feature this series…Nice Buns! Where we take a look at and bake buns! Believe me it's a feature you won't want to miss! We discuss the Met Police officer and why hasn't anything changed since Sarah Everard's murder? And do you love the smell of freshly cut grass? Jinty explains this curious well loved smell. Dating yourself- How did you get on with the WI before Christmas? We asked each other to date ourselves for 5 dates…… what did we learn? Join me as I chat to award-winning freelance health journalist Sarah Graham - she is the founder of the Hysterical Women blog, specializing in health, gender and feminism and writes for the i newspaper, the Telegraph, the Guardian, the BMJ and many others. Her book, ‘Rebel Bodies - A guide to the gender health gap revolution', was published on 5th January and it is a compelling account of all the ways women, trans, non-binary, and queer people are gaslit, ignored, and let down by the medical establishment. Rebel Bodies grew out of, and weaves in stories from, the blog, and covers topics from endometriosis to menopause and everything in between. (Content warning: there is brief discussion of baby loss, and suicide/suicidal ideation in this interview.) We discuss: The intersection of Sarah's own pregnancy with the process of writing the book - including a chapter that included some harrowing tales of other people's experiences - and how that impacted on her own experience of pregnancy and birthing. The story from the book that had, and continues to have the biggest impact on Sarah, and the one she knew she had to include. Some of the shocking statistics highlighted in the book, for example: that endometriosis is estimated to cost the UK economy £8.2 billion a year and that women are seven times more likely than men to be misdiagnosed and discharged in the middle of a heart attack. The ‘suicide gender paradox' - it was news to me that women actually attempt suicide at higher rates but men are more likely to die from their attempts - again, the suicide rate for women peaks around the time of peri/meno - yet often when we try to point this out the argument is shut down because rates are far higher in men, so this seems to me to be a really important consideration. We of course had to cover the current NHS crisis and the impact of many years of underfunding, and Sarah gives us her analysis of the Women's Health Strategy for England, published in 2022. I'll leave you with this quote, which talks about PMDD but could just as easily apply to the peri/menopause, and which really resonated with me: “From a feminist perspective, how do we acknowledge the very real impact of PMDD on sufferers' mental health without fuelling the idea that women's menstrual cycles make us irrational, overly emotional and less competent, trustworthy, or reliable?” You can find Hysterical Women at https://hystericalwomen.co.uk/ and Sarah is on Twitter: https://twitter.com/sarahgraham7 and Instagram https://www.instagram.com/sarahgraham7writer Rebel Bodies is published by Bloomsbury: https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/rebel-bodies-9781399401142/ - please do consider supporting your local indie bookstore if you buy a copy! There's a growing trend in women not wearing bras. To talk about this Nuala McGovern is joined by the Fashion Editor of The Times, Harriet Walker. She'll talk about bra trends up to now, and why this might not be the best of them. According to reports in the Telegraph, Rishi Sunak has shelved plans to reform childcare services put forward by his predecessor, Liz Truss. The plans were looking at increasing free childcare support and changing the staff-child ratio. Nuala McGovern will be looking at what the postponing of these reforms means for parents who need childcare, as well as those working in the industry, speaking to the CEO of the Early Years Alliance Neil Leitch and the Deputy Director of UK Onward, Adam Hawksbee. In our series Finding My Voice we're talking to women about the moment they realised they had something to say or stand up for. Elika Ashoori was an actor and baker who rarely kept up with politics. That is, until 2017 when her father, Anoosheh, was detained by the Iranian authorities while visiting his mother. Over the next 5 years, she and her family fought for his release and she was forced to go through what she calls a ‘crash course' in human rights campaigning. We look at the "gender health gap" with the Patient Safety Commissioner for England - Dr Henrietta Hughes. . A GP by training and previously a medical director at NHS England she was appointed in July and took up the post in September. She'll be joined by the health journalist Sarah Graham who has a new book out, Rebel Bodies: A guide to the gender health gap revolution Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Lisa Jenkinson Studio Manager: Bob Nettles.
Detective Dave Sweet, author of “Skeletons in My Closet”, joins Dr. Laura once more to talk about choosing positivity over cynicism when faced with the world's troubles. Dave details his work with charitable organizations that seek to put silver linings in tragedy. Dr. Laura revisits the tragedy surrounding her nieces that first drew her and Dave together, and they share a story about connectedness, some might call an affirmation, involving a painting. The messages that Dave shares through his charity work and book are about awareness and empowerment. As a homicide detective, he sees some of the worst tragedies that can befall people, but he chooses positivity and actions that make a difference.“I wanted to be part of an organization that was supporting and empowering women not to go back to their abuser. Gems [for Gems] spoke to me on that level. I was introduced to the organization through a family that I had already been supporting who had lost a daughter to intimate partner violence. And once I started to learn more about intimate partner violence, I really came to learn that 85% of the time the abuser is a man. And so if men are going to be the biggest part of the problem, then we have to also be part of the solution. I mean, it just makes sense.” - Dave SweetAbout Detective Dave Sweet:With over 24 years of policing experience, Detective Dave Sweet has been involved in some of Canada's most infamous and famous cases. Dr. Laura is honoured to host Detective Dave Sweet, a 24 year member of the Calgary Police Service and published author, to the podcast to talk about tragedy and hope. Detective Sweet has been changed by many difficult and tragic situations, but works to learn lessons and retain a positive outlook.Dr. Laura shares that she first met Dave Sweet during a tragedy that affected her own family, which was when she first read his book, Skeletons in my Closet. Dave wrote the book with the idea of it being a memoir of sorts, a legacy of the lessons he learned that he could pass down to his children and grandchildren. Each story in the book, no matter how disturbing, has a message or silver lining. Detective Sweet discusses some of those lessons, the subject of his next book, and what courage means in this enlightening interview.“Tragedy isn't something that we wish for. Episode 190 hosts Dr Michael Kane (Facial Plastic Surgeon, New York, USA) Michael's clinical experience with botulinum toxin is unparalleled. Having completed well over 100,000 treatments since 1991, he single-handedly developed many of the toxin protocols and facial muscle treatments; in an era when almost no-one was even using toxins. Michael's experience is so well respected that he has consulted in the trials and launches of every single brand of botulinum toxin. In our mini series 'The Tox Talks', we feature expert injectors who have significant experience in using a particular brand of a botulinum toxin as well as teaching it's use to other injectors. In this episode, we explore Michael's life time journey with the products and his experience as the world's undisputed ‘King Of Tox'. We explore: - Michael's story of how and why he first started using Botox as a plastic surgery fellow - The story of botulinum toxin going back to it's very first use in humans & the grandfather of toxins, Dr Allan Scott - How Michael & the Carruthers team both independantly studied Botox for cosmetic purposes in the early 1990's - The effect of toxins on the skin and how this is perceived differently in the West vs in Asia - The issue with clinical trials and how these limit the training of injectors to use toxins - How this has created a mindset problem for injectors & has limited the treatment possibilities for our patients - How Michael approaches his toxin consultations - Charging per area vs per unit - How to differentiate yourself as a toxin injector - What toxins Michael has in his clinic - The question of whether injectors should swap patients to different or new brands of toxin - Why the market needs more toxins - Michael's take on toxin resistance and how to limit it Dr Jake & David thank their amazing IA Patrons who have helped support and contribute to the day to day running of the podcast: IA Supporter tier: Esther Hermann, Sue Arber, Claire Waterworth, Cat Sullivan, Gavin Scriven, Steven Land, Estelle Kelly, Georgia Rappel, Camilla Phillips, Raquel Campos, Lesley Scott, Lorraine Mingoia, Brooke Taunton, Olivia Qian, Tanya Rose, Kylie Duncan, Lee Charlton, Anita East, Patricia Barrera IA Bronze tier: Ish Goonewardene, Steph Burrows, Zainab Al-Mukhtar, Monica Bahamon, Jacinta King, Hazel Salvedore, Skye Carter, Cathriona Sullivan, Jessica Halliday, Jane Conchie, Natalie Smith, Maria Reid, Mischell Christmas, Penny Commerford, Julia Foster, Douglas Rutledge, Niki Talic, Alexandra Bebb, Su-en Chow, Sunny Dhesi IA Silver tier: Julie Ann Rogers, Tanya Khan, Martina Lavery, Matt Manton, Alexandra Davies, Vanessa Anlezark, Lisa Price, Jayde Petersen, Mel Heuvel, Jo Canny, Sally McGuire, Sarah Graham, Simone Doreian, Nilly Tahiri, Nadia Zanco, Lori Hogan, Ania Janik, Tom Posenby, Megan Ucich, Melanie Russell-Richards, Brittany Collins, Odharnaith Butler, Rischell Poswell, Julia Ogilvie IA Gold tier: Lori Robertson, Marrisa Dennis, Natasha Keeping, Karim Sayed, Sarah Mowby, Mary Attard, Agnes Dube, Paul Smith, Ester Hermann, Kristina Ngyuen, Ashia Ahmed, Emma Beider, Diane Ayling, Bonnie, Leah Rosewarne, Vicki Gallagher, Martina Lavery, Charlotte Wolfenden, Iman Nurlin Become an IA Patron too & get the following benefits: - Be acknowledged as an IA Patron in our podcast descriptions - Join our IA Patron whatsapp group where we discuss tips, tricks, cases, business support topics and more - Watch our IA webinars - Access our new 'IA Business of Injecting Live' Zooms sessions - led by David - Access our new 'IA: Injectables Live' Zoom sessions - led by Jake (coming in early 2023) Subscribe to IA: Subscribe to IA on Apple Podcasts Subscribe to IA on Spotify Other IA links: Follow IA on Instagram Sign up as an IA Patron Visit the IA website Contact IA Apply to be a guest on IA Dr Jake Sloane: Follow Dr Jake on Instagram Book a treatment with Dr Jake Dr Jake's website David Segal: Follow David on Instagram Our podcast guest: Follow Michael on Instagram

Episode 188 hosts Dr Jake Sloane & David Segal, your hosts of Inside Aesthetics. In this episode Dr Jake & David explore 'The Future Of Aesthetics', a report commisioned by Allergan Aesthetics in 2021. The evolution of our industry continues to accelerate, with new products continuing to be released and injectables becoming more mainstream year on year. But what may surprise injectors and consumers alike is that our market is still very under-penetrated. The report was compiled by interviewing 15 global KOL's and working with Wunderman Thompson Intelligence, a market research company who specialise in future trends. The goal of the report aimed to uncover cultural shifts in aesthetics. Like the beauty and fashion industries, societal views change and have a direct impact on how aesthetics is perceived, accepted and consumed. By understanding and anticipating how the world's behavior is evolving, clinics and injectors will be able to better meet the needs of their patients today and into the future. We explore all ten chapters of the report including: 1) Diverse Individuality: How & why aesthetics must become more inclusive for patients of all ethnicities 2) The New Masculine: the evolution of male attitiudes to aesthetics 3) Gender Inclusive Beauty: How aesthetics can cater for those identify anywhere on the gender spectrum 4) Ephemeral Expression: The new concept of transient & short-term beauty outcomes 5) Elevated Experiences: How clinics might approach & elevate the customers experience 6) New Body Frontiers: Discussing body treatments & how to incorporate these into aesthetic clinics 7) Aesth-Ethics: The responsibility that injectors have for the messages that they promote to the public & the issue of counterfeit goods 8) The Digital Lens: Whether life lived through phones and laptops is warping our reality 9) Aesthetics & the Metaverse: The concept of patients and clinics interating in the new virtual reality 10) The End of Aging: Are we only at the tip of the iceberg in terms of using injectables for our patients? Listener Week: stories suggested by you. Many of you wanted us to talk about the patriarchal nature of some wedding traditions which seem to have stood the test of time like being walked down the aisle by your dad. Why are they still around and what do they symbolise? We look at their roots with Rachael Lennon, author of Wedded Wife: A Feminist History of Marriage; and journalist Sarah Graham, who planned a feminist wedding. We regularly cover the health issues women face as they approach the menopause. One listener asked us to raise awareness of a less publicised aspect of the process - which is pubic hair loss. Many women finds this gradually happens from the perimenopause on and unlike when you're younger, it doesn't grow back and it's said can exacerbate problems with libido and sexual identity. Emma finds out more from the Chair of the Menopause Society Paula Briggs and the Sex Therapist Stella Sonnenbaum. The refugees minister, Lord Harrington, has made a plea to the Treasury to double the money given to families hosting Ukrainian refugees. He fears that the cost of living may lead to a quarter of the host households pulling out of the scheme at the end of October when the initial six months is up. Many people are having positive life-affirming experiences, but we have also been contacted by some listeners who are having a trickier time and feel not much is being said publicly about when these situations go wrong. And advice for a mother who lives in a rural area who emailed about her daughter being bullied from Kidscape's CEO Lauren Seager-Smith and Consultant Child Psychologist Dr Jane Gilmour. Today's guest, Connie Yen, is the author of Sinner and Savior: Emma Molloy and the Graham Murder, the true story of an 1886 murder in Greene County known as “The Graham Tragedy.” In 1886, the nude body of Sarah Graham was found in a well on the Molloy property. Subsequent investigations uncovered a bigamous marriage and other allegedly scandalous happenings in the home of temperance advocate Emma Molloy. Listen carefully because it's not easy to know what's fact and what's fiction in this unbelievable story!
The gender health gap. It's a phrase we're hearing more and more and is relevant around the world. So what's it all about and what does it mean for those of us with pelvic floor dysfunction? Helen chats to the award-winning health journalist, Sarah Graham, founder of the Hysterical Women blog, which looks at inequalities in women's health, and author of a new book on the gender health gap, due out in 2023. They discuss the impact of living with a healthcare system designed 'by men, for men', and how women sharing their own stories is helping to force change. You can find Sarah on Instagram and TwitterMore on the UK government's Women's Health Strategy hereMore on the Scottish government's Women's Health Plan hereFurther reading about the gender health gap hereRCOG report on long waits for gynaecology services hereThis episode is sponsored by Modibodi, the go-to brand for any of life's leaks. As many as 400 Chinese Americans lived in a neighborhood called Hop Alley at its height in the early 20th century. Located at the corner of Market and Chestnut, the thriving community not only served as a refuge from overt racism but also as a small reflection of a culture left behind. Just press play to hear the whole story. ------- Click on search links to explore episodes with related content: Maggie Sullivan, Asian American - Pacific Islander American History, Landmark Locations, Immigration, Business, ------ Podcast Transcript: I'm Maggie Sullivan, Researcher at the Missouri History Museum and Here's History on 88.1 KDHX. ------- St. Louis is known for diverse neighborhoods shaped by strong immigrant communities, the Hill, Carondelet, Bevo Mill, Dutchtown. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, downtown was home to St. Louis' very first Chinatown. As many as 400 Chinese Americans lived in a neighborhood called Hop Alley at its height in the early 20th century. The first Chinese immigrant to St. Louis was a young man named Alla Lee, who arrived in 1857. He settled in the Irish quarter near Biddle Street and married an Irish woman, Sarah Graham, sealing his acceptance into the Irish community. Lee ran a tea shop, his social standing and connection to the Irish keeping him and his children from the grueling work of a laundry business. ------- Most Chinese immigrant families in America ran laundries, a job that left little time for recreation and relaxation. They serviced mostly European Americans rather than their own communities. When launders finished their work or took a day off, they hurried to Hop Alley to spend time with their fellow countrymen and enjoy an atmosphere like their hometowns. ------- A small city block bordered by Market and Chestnut, St. Louis' Chinatown served as a refuge for Chinese culture. It was also a community center for people frequently harassed and persecuted by racial discrimination. With most of the laundry shops located outside Hop Alley, there were groceries, restaurants, tea shops and everything else Chinese Americans needed inside Hop Alley. As time passed, tea shops and restaurants attracted European Americans who previously disapproved of their Chinese neighbors. ------- The Chinese residents and business owners of Hop Alley introduced their culture to curious St. Louisans. Many Chinese St. Louisans learned English and American traditions at Sunday School. Even well to do Chinese families or those who converted to Christianity or spoke English fluently would return to Hop Alley for celebrations such as Chinese New Year, or weekly gatherings to share traditional home cuisine. ------ Hop Alley was demolished in the 1960s to make way for the second Busch Stadium. By then most Chinese American families had moved further west into the city or the suburbs. Photos remain attesting to the vibrancy of St. Louis' first Chinatown. ------ Here's History is a joint production of the Missouri History Museum and KDHX. I'm Maggie Sullivan and this is 88.1 KDHX St. Louis.
