Ep. 832 - It was a much-needed win on Sunday. No, it wasn't perfect. But thanks to the play of James Conner and Trey McBride, the Cardinals “stayed relevant” in the playoff hunt, according to head coach Jonathan Gannon. And let's not forget the defense. In fact, that's where Craig Grialou and Dani Sureck begin their discussion when looking back at the 30-17 victory over the New England Patriots. The defense played well despite losing Mack Wilson Sr. and Jesse Luketa five plays into the first quarter; a number of players stepped up in their absence. And, yes, the Cardinals got lucky - and there's nothing wrong with that - from an interception that wasn't to a fumble that turned into a touchdown, for a second time this season. Playoff football remains a very real possibility.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

#321: Dash To The Draft 2022 (LB Class Overview with Scott Kennedy)

1. Many consider Utah's Devin Lloyd as the best off-ball LB in this class. Just weeks ago, many mock drafts had him as a top-10 pick. That said, since he didn't test as well as hoped at the Combine, he could very well experience a fall on draft day. How does he compare with recent players at his position who went in the top 10 (Roquan Smith, Devin White) and if he does fall, how far can you see him falling? 2. Another off-ball LB prospect that many see as the best in the class is Nakobe Dean of Georgia. Now, some buzz suggests he could fall all the way to Day 2 given concerns about whether his physical play-style can hold up at his relatively petit size (229 pounds). Moreover, some are of the opinion that one or both of his fellow Bulldogs in this class (Quay Walker and Channing Tindall) may be as good or better options. In what order do you have these three Georgia ‘backers ranked on your board at this time, and why? 3. Just two years ago, the Bengals selected a LB from Wyoming in Logan Wilson who has already grown into a core piece of their defense. This year, Wyoming is sending an arguably better LB prospect to the NFL in Chad Muma. Muma was a tackling machine for the Cowboys (11.3 tackles per game over the past two seasons) and posted some special numbers at the Combine (40” vertical jump and 129” broad jump). How does Muma compare/contrast with Logan Wilson as a prospect and can you see him carving out a similar role for himself as his fellow Wyoming Cowboy within the next two seasons? 4. A prospect that could very well be rising up boards across the league after posting some super freakish results at both the Combine and his Pro Day is Wisconsin's Leo Chenal. Aside from a 40.5” vertical and a 128” broad jump in Indy, he posted an ASTONISHING 6.84s three-cone drill. Moreover, according to data analyst/statistician Kent Lee Platte, Chenal's Relative Athletic Score ranked fourth out of 2,188 LB dating back all the way to 1987. Does the tape match the traits for Leo Chenal in your view, and how early can you see him hearing his name called? 5. As ESPN's Jordan Reid and others reported at the Combine, a LB that the NFL is apparently much higher on than those in draft media is LSU's Damone Clark. Based on what you have seen of him, why do you think that is? 6. Buy Or Sell: Christian Harris, Jesse Luketa, Malcolm Rodriguez, Darrian Beavers, Brandon Smith, Zakoby McClain, Brian Asamoah, Aaron Hansford 7. Best Landing Spots: -Devin Lloyd: Falcons -Nakobe Dean: Bears, Steelers, Seahawks -Quay Walker: AFC West or NFC West -Chad Muma: Broncos -Leo Chenal: Colts

This week, Penn State football is sending eight players to the 2022 NFL Combine in Indianapolis. While the testing had interviews have already begun, the on-field television portion starts on Thursday. To get you ready for what to expect, host Thomas Frank Carr and Senior Editor Nate Bauer discuss what they expect from Penn State's contingent at the combine.  They start with Bauer's article from Wednesday detailing how Penn State's top 'freaks' safety Jaquan Brisker and linebacker Brandon Smith should test. The Athletic's Bruce Feldman moved Brisker up in his rankings based on his performance this past season and what he's projected to run at the combine. Bauer details those numbers, and T-Frank gives context to what they mean. After that, T-Frank gives one drill that he thinks Brisker needs to succeed in showing off his considerable talents.  From there, they discuss Smith and his expected testing numbers. This conversation quickly shifts from Smith's physical abilities to his play in 2021, which was sub-par to expectation. So will that change his draft stock? Bauer thinks there's a chance while T-Frank isn't so sure. He gives why he believes that Smith will still be a Day 2 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.  Also, is there validity to the conversation of Brandon Smith switching positions to edge defender? T-Frank has no time for the discussion and gives his reasons why. That conversation then leads into another one about the traits necessary to play through contact, how Penn State selects players from high school, and Smith's ability to learn that trait in the future. T-Frank then gives a key number for a drill he thinks Smith needs to ace to solidify his profile as a coverage player. Finally, T-Frank asks, which player will be the top freak at the combine? They both give their answers.  Next, they discuss Penn State's left tackle, Rasheed Walker. T-Frank is particularly frustrated with Walker's evaluation because he doesn't know what to do with him. Bauer asks if he's a left tackle or a different position going forward, and T-Frank admits he doesn't have a good answer. Then, they go into Walker's testing numbers and play to try and find a solution. It eventually evolved into a conversation about Walker's underperforming during his time at Penn State and trying to find a reason.  From there, they discuss Penn State's best possible chance of sending a first-round pick to the draft in April in receiver Jahan Dotson. What 40 times is Dotson expected to run? He's possibly the best overall player at his position, but will the NFL covet him on Day 1? T-Frank explains the difference and then points out the holes in Dotson's game that may prevent him from becoming that pick. From there, he gives a drill and a testing result that can help Dotson prove those doubts wrong.  After discussing Dotson, T-Frank and Bauer discuss Penn State's defensive end prospects in Arnold Ebiketie and Jesse Luketa. What should you expect out of Ebiketie? T-Frank gives the drills and the numbers that are key for pass rushers. He thinks that both can shine in that role this week as well. Luketa is an exciting prospect with a wide range of outcomes based on this week. If he tests well, could he leapfrog Brandon Smith in the draft? T-Frank and Bauer discuss. Finally, they discuss Penn State's specialist, Jordan Stout. While mostly having fun with the conversation, T-Frank gives one critical metric for punters at the combine.  Lastly, they ask the question that frustrated Penn State fans have brought up for a month now. If Penn State had so many great athletes at the NFL Combine, why did they finish 7-6? Bauer and T-Frank bring up the question and give the apparent context to it.  Learn more about your ad choices. While the current Penn State football players are hard at work in the weight room getting ready for the 2022 season, eight former Nittany Lions are gearing up for the next step in their career. Starting Tuesday, March 1st, these players will put their skills to the test at the annual NFL Combine in Indianapolis in front of 32 teams. Which players need to make the most of an impact? You can make a case for any one of them, but host Thomas Frank Carr has picked three players to represent the three critical data-gathering facets of the Combine. After a quick introduction about the Penn Staters that won Super Bowl LVI, T-Frank starts with the interview portion of the Combine. Most fans are not aware of the 15-minute interview sessions outside of the skills testing on the field during the week in Indy. Players meet with interested teams in scheduled blocks of time to ask just about any question they want. While the most bizarre questions make it to the light of day, the more serious questions about play, performance, and personality don't. So who needs to ace the interview portion the most? T-Frank has a candidate that he thinks fits that situation perfectly. Next, he focuses on the testing portion of the Combine. From the famous 40-yard dash to the vertical leap, one player needs to post excellent numbers more than the other seven representatives from Penn State. So why is Jesse Luketa the pick? After all, he just finished an impressive week at the Senior Bowl. T-Frank explains. Finally comes the medical examinations at the Combine. Who has the most checkered injury past? Penn State does not give public details regarding injuries, so this is a murkier topic. Despite that, one player stands out. Finally, T-Frank addresses one related topic to the Combine and the players mentioned on the show. Did some players, like Luketa, make a mistake by declaring for the draft? Would one more year of development change their draft slotting? T-Frank gives his thoughts on what he thinks is a warped perception of money, draft position, and value. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Learn more about your ad choices. The Blue-White Podcast: A Penn State Athletics Podcast

As the 2022 offseason marches on, current, former, and future Penn State football players are making news over the past week. The BWI Monday Live Show distills all of that information into 60 minutes to start each week. Join host Thomas Frank Carr, reporter Dave Eckert and senior Editor Nate Bauer live on YouTube today as they discuss various topics surrounding the football and basketball team. They'll start with updates to previous topics on the show over the past week. Penn State announced late in the week that they have reached a deal with the clothing brand Fanatics to sell player jerseys for the upcoming season. How will that work? How does that factor into players' names, images, and likeness deals? Bauer, Eckert, and T-Frank all give their thoughts about the news and how things are shaping up for head coach James Franklin in his push to keep the Nittany Lions on pace with the rest of college football. From there, they'll shift gears to the 2022 Senior Bowl, which wrapped up on Saturday. Former Penn State hybrid defender Jesse Luketa had a standout performance with two sacks and a fumble during the game. So how does that change his draft stock, if at all? The trio will give their thoughts. After that, they'll open up the show to questions from the live audience and give their thoughts on any opinions relevant to the week's topics. From there, they'll get into this week's game. First, each panelist will predict the breakout player for the 2022 season on offense and defense. Then, this week, they'll make a case for why that player is the correct answer, and then the audience will vote on who has the best answer. In their return to the Bryce Jordan Center last night, Penn State basketball got a massive win with a 90-86 victory over Iowa. Reporter Dave Eckert joins the BWI Daily Edition to give his thoughts on the game. Host Thomas Frank Carr starts Eckert at the end of the game where Iowa, down for most of the game, forced overtime. How unusual was the play that extended the contest to two overtimes? Eckert details what happened in the final minutes of a game that Penn State controlled for most of the evening. After that, they discuss the overtime period and how the game-tying tip-in from Keegan Murray affected Penn State in the extra minutes. Finally, Eckert details the key players in overtime and how head coach Micah Shrewsberry navigated had his team respond. From there, they work back to regulation and discuss just how rare the performance from big men John Harrar and Greg Lee was. Both were outstanding on the night to a level that, according to Eckert, Penn State hasn't seen in quite some time. However, they had to do the bulk of the work to get Penn State in position to close the game out in the final minutes becuase one key element was missing from the Nittany Lions attack. Eckert details what that was and how it led to a slum in the middle minutes of the game. After wrapping up their discussion about last night, they move on to Penn State's upcoming game against Wisconsin this weekend. Eckert previews what waits ahead of the Nittany Lions in Madison and how the game might unfold. From there, they move on to discuss Penn State Hockey. The team has struggled this season, and Eckert gives his thoughts about what has been going on for head coach Guy Gadowski's squad. Why has the team played better as of late? Why hasn't it translated into wins? Finally, they break that down and forecast the team's postseason chances. Lastly, they discuss the Senior Bowl. In Mobile, practice started earlier this week for several former Penn State players who hope to improve their stock in the 2022 NFL Draft. T-Frank and Eckert discuss Jesse Luketa's change in weight, Arnold Ebiketie's insane measurements, and Jahan Dotson's absence from the event. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/ Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Learn more about your ad choices. This week, Penn State football is in Tampa, Florida, preparing to face Arkansas in the Outback Bowl. Blue White Illustrated reporter Greg Pickel is down in the Sunshine State and joins host Thomas Frank Carr to give an update on the team, what he's seen at practice, as well as his takeaways from media availability.  They start with the news that broke Wednesday afternoon that Penn State left tackle Rasheed Walker would not play in the game, and backup Olu Fashanu will take his spot on the left side. Pickel wasn't surprised by the news but by what head coach James Franklin said during his press conference. So, he addresses that before giving his thoughts on what that move means for the team.  Next, they get into the other piece of news coming out of Franklin's media availability. First, they discuss what that information means for the Penn State defense and its effects. Then, T-Frank gets Pickel's thoughts on how bowl games should affect the redshirt status of players who may be forced into action by starters opting out for the NFL Draft.  From there, they examine a crucial cog in Penn State's efforts on defense; linebacker Jesse Luketa. After hearing what interim defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter has to say about how they might use Luketa on Saturday, T-Frank and Pickel discuss what is best for the team in that regard. Finally, T-Frank brings up one troubling stat regarding Luketa's usage and how it could put Penn State in a bind if he plays too many snaps at linebacker.  From there, they take a look at the young players that might see action during the contest and what Pickel is curious to learn about that group on Saturday.  Finally, they wrap up by going over the news that starting corner Joey Porter Jr. is returning to Penn State next season. They hear from Porter Jr. what happened at the end of the year, and then T-Frank and Pickel discuss his potential next season.  JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/ Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Learn more about your ad choices. Penn State football has several high-profile players entering the 2022 NFL Draft this upcoming spring. To gauge where they stand in the draft landscape, host Thomas Frank Carr speaks with Anthony Treash of PFF to get his view on the matter.  However, before they get to the prospects, they look at Penn State's most critical player on offense, quarterback Sean Clifford. They discuss the season that Clifford put together, what stood out, and where he improved. They also discuss Clifford's future at Penn State and what Nittany Lions fans should expect if the senior returns for a sixth year. Finally, Treash leaves the conversation of quarterbacks with a glimmer of hope in his evaluation of 5-star prospect Drew Allar.  The first player they discuss is Penn State safety Jaquan Brisker. Treash and T-Frank discuss Brisker's season and what stood out about the safety's stellar play. Treash also says that Brisker has the essential ingredient that makes an NFL defensive back stand out from the rest. But does he also say that Brisker should be a high draft pick?  The next player they discuss is edge defender Arnold Ebiketie. Treash was very high on the former Temple Owl and his transition to Penn State this offseason. Did he live up to or exceed his expectations? Next, T-Frank and Treash discuss what makes Ebiketie so great as a rusher, and then Treash gives his draft stock projection. Finally, T-Frank asks Treash to rank the senior among the best edge prospects that Penn State has produced over the last several years. Where does he rank Ebikeite among Odafe Oweh and Yetur Gross-Matos?  They save possibly the most controversial prospect for last with receiver Jahan Dotson. The numbers for Dotson this year are outstanding, but did his PFF grade match? How do his physical skills weigh into his draft evaluation? T-Frank and Treash discuss Dotson's future, and Treash says that the senior receiver answered more questions than not this past season.  They end the show with a discussion about edge defender Jesse Luketa. The hybrid defender hasn't publicly decided what he plans to do this offseason, so Treash weighs in on what he thinks Luketa should do. How does he project as an NFL defender? What does the road through the NFL look like for Luketa if he declares now? Finally, T-Frank and Treash wrap up agreeing that developing in one key area could make Luketa a high-profile prospect in the future.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Penn State Football Team is about to begin the second half of the season this weekend when they host Illinois at Beaver Stadium. To get ready for the stretch run, Host of the BWI Daily Edition Thomas Frank Carr brings on writer at Blue White Illustrated Dave Eckert to take a look at the final six games and give some predictions.    They begin with some True or False questions that T-Frank wants to know Dave's answers to. The questions include: - Penn State's defense will be able to overcome the loss of PJ Mustihper. - Jesse Luketa will have an equal number of pressures to Arnold Ebiketie. - The Penn State defensive starters will shut out at least one more opponent.  - Penn State's rushing attack will have a statistically better output going forward. - Sean Clifford will play the majority of the snaps in the next six games. - Jahan Dotson will go over 100 yards receiving in more than three games to end the season.    - Penn State will match their 5-1 record to start the season in the second half.   Next they take a more open-ended look at the last stanza and discuss Penn State's chances of getting near or being in the conversation for the College Football Playoff. That question ultimately leads to the discussion of Penn State vs Ohio State and the Nittany Lions chances in that game.    Finally they look at the key factors to success that they haven't discussed, take a stab at evolving the Penn State offense after the bye week and then give a quick preview of the game this weekend against Illinois.    SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: http://bluewhiteillustrated.com / Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/ Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/BWIonRivals
