A Word With You

Now it's been a while since it was a primetime television show. You might catch it every once in a while in the odd hours of the morning. But there was a time when it was a block-buster on television, and then it became some block-buster movies. When it was on TV, I tried never to miss it. It was called Mission Impossible. Now, maybe if you're old enough, you can remember the theme music. It always began with Jim Phelps, who was the head of the Impossible Missions Force. He'd get the latest assignment. And then he'd get some photos that described a mission that was considered by his superior virtually impossible. You remember the voice would come on and say, "Your mission, Jim, should you choose to accept it is..." And then they'd go on. And then in the old days they'd say, "This tape will self-destruct in 30 seconds." And it just all kind of blew up at that point. Well, Jim would then go back and put together his team, and the rest of the story was how they pulled off this assignment that was supposedly undoable. Now, I haven't seen Mission Impossible for a long time, but I don't need to. I live it. And maybe you do too...or you could. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Why Mission Impossible Isn't." Well, do you ever look at the week ahead, or the day ahead, or the month and just say, "Mission impossible! It can't work! I can't do it!" I do that. For example, I remember when I saw a week ahead of me that was a mountain of deadlines, and decisions, and responsibilities, and people. And I tell you the truth; I know what it is to panic when I look at that wall-to-wall, jam-packed week or month ahead. Maybe you do too? Well, at that point, I had been reading 2 Corinthians for my personal time with the Lord each morning, and that morning (and you know, the Lord is good about this), I just read the next passage, and He lovingly gave me a verse that changed everything. Now you might be facing a challenge or challenges that look like some unmovable mountain right now. Maybe it's family, or school, or at work, or maybe you've got some relational mountains to move. Maybe it's a ministry you're doing; maybe it's medical issues. It's not the tape that's about to self-destruct like that Mission Impossible; it's you. Well, listen to this beautiful, redemptive verse in 2 Corinthians 9:8. I committed it to memory at that moment. "And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things, at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." You say, "Whoa! Where is that?" That's 2 Corinthians 9:8. No loopholes... all, all, all, all, all. "God is going to give you all grace, in all things, at all times, having all that you need." There's no attorney on earth who could find a loophole there. And you know what the word abound means? It says, "God will make you abound..." Well, His grace abounding to you so you can abound in every good work. It means literally from the Greek, "more than enough," or "to be left over," or "to make extremely rich." It was the same word used to describe the feeding of the 5,000. Remember, they thought there wouldn't be enough for the crowd, and then instead they had 12 baskets of fragments leftover lunch to spare. That's the same word - leftovers, lots to spare. If you depend on the adrenalin of God's grace for this mountain, you will get it done and you will have resources left over if you're using His resources. And that impossible week, I've found out over and over again; those turn into one of the most supernatural weeks I've ever experienced, because I was riding on this promise. Everything happened; it happened better than I could have ever dreamed. See, God makes you extremely rich in grace so you can make others extremely rich through the good works you have to do. God plenty's us so we can plenty those around us. You have in Christ more than enough grace for every assignment God has given you. And that's why your Mission Impossible isn't impossible.

For this week's episode of the podcast, we watched director Brian De Palma's 1996 adaptation of Mission: Impossible, starring Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Henry Czerny (Kittridge!), Emmanuelle Béart, Jean Reno, Ving Rhames, Kristin Scott Thomas and Vanessa Redgrave. It was shot by frequent De Palma collaborator Stephen H. Burum and edited by Paul Hirsch. Screenplay by David Koepp and Robert Towne. Mission: Impossible, based on the television series, was the inaugural project of Tom Cruise's production company, and the Mission: Impossible franchise has become a core part of Cruise's celebrity career. The film was generally well-received by critics, although there were complaints about its convoluted plot, and was one of the biggest hits of 1996, grossing nearly $181 million on a budget of $45 million. In Mission: Impossible, Cruise plays Ethan Hunt, a member of the Impossible Missions Force who is on the run after his entire team — including its leader, Jim Phelps, played by John Voight — is killed in a failed mission to obtain a secretive list of every undercover CIA agent. When Hunt learns that the mission was actually a staged hunt for a mole within the IMF — and that the real mole is still out there, seeking the list — he goes on the run in an effort to obtain the list for himself, expose the mole, and regain his freedom. To do so, he recruits his own Impossible Mission Team — comprised of Ving Rhames, Jean Reno and Emmanuelle Beart — and stages a break-in at CIA headquarters in Langley. What unfolds next is a series of twists, turns, surprises and betrayals. The tagline for Mission: Impossible was “Expect the Impossible.” You can Mission: Impossible to rent or buy on Amazon and iTunes, and to stream on Amazon Prime Video and Paramount Plus. Our next episode is Michael Bay's action thriller, The Rock.Connor Lynch produced this episode. “This whole operation was a mole hunt.”Tom Cruise Upgrades the TV Show with Mission: ImpossibleIt took Paramount a while to get the Mission: Impossible movie off the ground. They'd tried for years with the property, nearly getting a version made in the early 80s before it fell through because of an escalating budget. By the time Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner were ready to start their own producing work, the property was still floundering. Cruise, as a fan of the show, immediately recognized its strengths and thought it would be a great way to kick off Cruise/Wagner Productions. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off our last series of the season – the Mission: Impossible films – with De Palma's 1996 film Mission: Impossible. Here's a hint at what we talk about.Pete has seen some of the original show but Andy never has. Does that play into how we approached this first film and our impressions? They certainly do change elements, after all. Jim Phelps is a traitor. It's not so much a team story as it is an Ethan Hunt story. But it does feel like covert missions in this film, perhaps moreso than later in the franchise. This is also the birthplace of Cruise as the action star always ready to do his own (often crazy) stunts. It's not as large or over-the-top here, but it's certainly still part of the story and who can forget him suspended on the cables dropping silently into CIA headquarters? That's absolutely the centerpiece of this film and still is a thrill to watch. We also love the sequence with Hunt talking to Kittridge in the restaurant full of giant fish tanks, as well as the train sequence. We struggle with some of the team elements, and definitely have issues with the flatness of that first team. Good thing they all get picked off! Some performances are better than others. Same goes for the effects of the day, but largely De Palma shows he knows how to use CGI and when, so it's rarely a problem here. Speaking of De Palma, he's bringing a lot of creative style to the story which feels key to the spy story being told. It's a thrill to start this franchise with him really allowed to play. All in, it's a good start to this series. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. We're happy to debut a new podcast series in conjuction with the When It Was Cool network with the first episode of The Plot. What's that, you ask? It's going to be an examination of the spy/heist genre. It will look at film, television, comics, cartoons and whatever else that can fall under that umbrella. First up, we go to the very top of the genre for me, the original Mission Impossible TV show, which ran on CBS from 1966 to 1975. Naturally, we start with the Pilot, which starred Steven Hill as Dan Briggs, the team leader, along with regulars Barbara Bain, Greg Morris, Peter Lupus, Martin Landau and guest star Wally Cox. We look at the background on the show and then some brief chat about the episode itself, where the team goes to a Caribbean country to stop a dictator from using newly-acquired nuclear warheads against the United States. We also look at arguably the most-remembered episode of the show, Season 3's The Execution. We have Peter Graves in his second year as Jim Phelps, the regular team and guest villains Vincent Gardenia, Val Avery and Lew Askew. The team needs to get the goods on a mobster trying to control food prices and must get a hitman to rat out his boss by making him believe he is days away from being killed in the gas chamber. This episode was a little shorter than we planned, but didnt want to just add filler. It was the demo episode, so please forgive any hiccups or glitches. We'll be back soon with another episode. Thanks to Karl for the invitation. Make sure you sample the other shows on the When It Was Cool Network.

This week marks a Christmas miracle! The first part of our Mission Impossible Saga retrospective. While there is always a lot to say about this great series of films, we try to break down some of our favorite aspects of them. So, for the first episode we take a look at the first three films in the series. The first film started the series with a new character, Tom Cruises Ethan Hunt, who then becomes the central figure in these action films and the de facto leader of the IMF, or Impossible Mission Force way back in 1996. The first three films take Ethan Hunt from Prague, to London, Spain, Australia, America, Italy, and finally Shanghai, China to stop threats from Jon Voight as Jim Phelps, Dougray Scott as Sean Ambrose, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Owen Davian. And, the guys dont forget about the TV series. Lalo Schifrins incredible contribution to the television show in 1966 still stands as a strong influence on each composer who takes up a film in the series. Some of Schifrins best themes are talked about here, as well as the influence on some of the suspense cues. While the first and third are excellent action films (and one of De Palmas best, most commercial efforts for the first), the second seems to be a casualty of its time, directed by the great John Woo. For anyone wondering which films score they should start with, or even if you have questions about how they were made, take a listen. This was a difficult mission, but we wanted to go out of the year with a bang! And what better way than with the biggest action star in the world, Tom Cruise. So, Merry Christmas with the first part of the saga, and come back in the new year for the second part! You have five seconds before this message self-destructs...

Autopilot 05 - Mission Impossible Mission: Impossible is a U.S television series that was created and initially produced by Bruce Geller. It chronicles the missions of a team of secret government agents known as the Impossible Missions Force (IMF). In the first season, the team is led by Dan Briggs, played by Steven Hill; Jim Phelps, played by Peter Graves, takes charge for the remaining seasons. A hallmark of the series shows Briggs or Phelps receiving his instructions on a recording that then self-destructs, followed by the theme music composed by Lalo Schifrin.
