Seventy years ago in 1954, Joe spent his first year on staff as a wrangler at base camp headquarters. Dr. Armstrong went on to have an extremely successful career in the horse and cattle industry as an international judge, educator, breeder, consultant, coach and competitor. He is also a published author of the book titled: The Horseman's Handbook: Horse Ownership, Care & Enjoyment. Get ready to embark on a martial arts odyssey with Brian on this episode of B-Movie Bliss as he takes a hilarious and thought-provoking dive into the '80s cult classic, "American Ninja." In this cinematic rollercoaster, our mullet-sporting hero, Joe Armstrong, grapples with sinister mercenaries, explosive shurikens, and a plot thinner than ninja smoke. Brian dissects the film's unintentional humor, from Michael Dudikoff's deadpan ninja vibes to the cringe-worthy yet iconic dialogue that will leave you both scratching your head and in stitches. The absurdity of the fight sequences, complete with questionable tactics and an arsenal of weapons that defy the laws of physics, will have you questioning everything you thought you knew about martial arts. Join B-Movie Bliss for a nostalgic journey into the neon-soaked, synth-laden landscape of "American Ninja," where bad becomes a badge of honor. Is it a guilty pleasure, a masterpiece in disguise, or just a glorious mess? Find out as Brian rates this '80s gem and invites you to revel in the blissful chaos of B-movie magic. Directed by: Sam Firstenberg Starring: Michael Dudikoff, Steve James, Judie Aronson, Some other ninja fuckers. American Ninja is the first movie in a rash of films (cleverly named American Ninja 1-5) and follows Joe Armstrong, an American soldier, obviously very skilled in martial arts, who single-handedly takes on mercenaries in the Philippines - but that's not the whole story... Joe Armstrong, an orphaned drifter will little respect for much other than martial arts, finds himself on an American Army base in The Philippines after a judge gives him a choice of enlistment or prison. On one of his first missions driving a convoy, his platoon is attacked by a group of rebels who try to steal the weapons the platoon is transporting and kidnap Patricia, the base colonel's daughter, who happens to be along for the ride. Joe rescues Patricia and gets her safely back to the base, but everyone else in the platoon is killed, leading his superiors to conclude that Joe is guilty of cowardice, collaboration or simple incompetence. At the same time, the rebel leader vows revenge against the serviceman who disrupted his plans, and sends an army of ninjas to assassinate him and bring back Patricia. If he wants to survive and save the girl, Joe's going to have to draw on every last ounce of his training.-----------------------------------------------------------------If you are new to the podcast then please consider following us on the platform that you love, we can be found most anywhere that you listen to your favorite podcasts. Dudikoff returns as Joe Armstrong but does any of the magic of the first 2 films come with him? And can David Bradley match up to his Alpha Ninja? And can Karl stand in for Steve James? Nope, uh uh and wowie no way man. So basically, our boy from AN3 Sean (David Bradley) pairs up with his buddy to save some POWs held captive by a snobby Colonel Neil Diamond and his terrorist pal Shah-Blah-Blah who want $50 million and blow up a nuke in NYC. Well Sean and Carl get nabbed and tortured so the USA calls in ol' Joe Armstrong to ninja up and kick his way through a ninja training camp to free them all. The usual stuff here. Along the way he travels to Barter Town, fights in Thunderdome and recruits a horde of barbarians to invade the baddies fortress. Joe then finds the captives, proves his superiority to Sean, kills Sean, finds out dead Sean is an imposter (because?) and then wanders off. So its the worst of the AN series and by quite a ways. There's very little remarkable in it outside of the lunacy that I mentioned last paragraph. The ninjas are dumb. The stunts are boring. The fight choreography is mushy. And the villains suck. There's also a ton of filler with the middle section mostly consisting of Sean, Karl and Sarah (Robin Stille) getting smacked around, Joe sharpening his sword (which he never uses) and the baddies cackling ala Dr. Evil.....for 40 minutes. It's still a do, but just barely and not for anyone that isn't a baloney ninja action movie fan.
While hearing how Elixir is being used in the Royal Bank of Canada's Capital Markets, we learned a lot of extra things we didn't expect! Thanos Vassilakis, head of R&D in the CM group, explained how middle managers talk about “scaling” to mean hiring staff with the goal of using all of their budgets. Not the kind of scaling we typically think about! Thanos identified the biggest problem limiting Elixir's adoption at large financial institutions and it wasn't what we expected. He also shared stories of how LiveView greatly out performed React when rendering hundreds of live updating financial charts and, after experimenting with it, the React devs fully adopted LiveView! Lots of great insights and stories in this one! After an earth-shattering term that ended federal protection for abortion in the last term, the 6-3 Supreme Court GOP majority is flexing its power in the new 2022-2023 term. Jessica welcomes the PJP producer and co-host Joe Armstrong back to discuss upcoming cases about redistricting and voting rights, a 1st Amendment case that deals with Andy Warhol (you read that right), a pair of cases that address affirmative action, yet another religious rights and discrimination case, and a doozy of a case with colossal implications that deals with what what is referred to as the independent legislature doctrine. And there is a new justice on the bench, with Ketanji Brown Jackson displaying a keen legal mind in the first oral arguments of the new session.

The SonicPi project has been letting people live code musical performances for years. Sam Aaron joins us to talk about the project and how Elixir is playing an increased role. The project uses multiple languages and frameworks, in fact, Joe Armstrong created the Erlang portion for handling the concurrent IO needs. We talk about where the project is, what's new in the upcoming release, and more about the future of Elixir with the project. LiveView as a UI for jamming with your friends in a distributed musical performance tool? Cool! Joe Armstrong makes his first appearance of 2022 on PJP this week, and he and Jessica discuss three of the biggest current legal topics. First, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin took the stand in her defamation suit against the New York Times this week. How did she do? [ANSWER: Not great.] We also recently learned that although Donald Trump may or may not have been flushing official documents down a White House toilet, he most definitely improperly took some top secret documents with him when he left for Mar-a-Lago in Florida. Lastly, the Supreme Court this week ruled in Alabama's favor when it came to a recent challenge to congressional redistricting despite a violation of the Voting Rights Act, and Jessica shares some theories about how this "shadow docket" decision may be related to SCOTUS' recent YOLO energy.

We talk with Kurt Mackey, founder at Fly.io, about what makes the Fly platform unique and why hosting Elixir applications there makes a lot of sense. They started out looking to make a better CDN for developers and this pushed them to try deploying Full Stack applications closer to users, not just the static assets! We learn about the tech behind the networking, how databases can be moved closer to users, and how LiveView is even more awesome when it is close to users. Kurt also shares what he sees as the future for databases as the industry continues to move into globally distributed applications. Joe Armstrong, one of the creators of Erlang, once said: "Erlang is 'write once, run forever'".Grab yourself a cup of coffee or tea and listen to this amazing conversation with Brian St. Amand, an expert Erlang software engineer. Erlang is a powerful yet not so popular tool for building fault-tolerant distributed systems.
