We are excited to be joined by Jorge Ferrer on the Mangu.tv podcast series. Jorge is an author and scholar in transformative practices. He has a PhD in clinical psychology at the Institute of Integral Studies California and in 2009 Jorge was selected to become an advisor to the organization Religions for Peace at the United Nations. Jorge joined Giancarlo to delve into his fourth book Love and Freedom, which proposes an evolution of modern relationships and a systematic discussion of relationship modes beyond monogamy and polyamory. His research has found that people fundamentally cheat because they are lacking something vital in their relationships. They want to remain with the person they are in a relationship with, however do not want to sacrifice their sexual vitality. ‘They cheat because they love their partners and they know, or they suspect that their partners would not support that openness.' Jorge goes on to discuss mono/poly wars; the situation of mutual judgement and condescension between poly and monogamous people. He proposes to depolarize this with the introduction of his term ‘novogamy' opening up a field of possibilities which can take different types, pathways, geographies, situations plus much more into consideration. This lets people leverage their identity, similarly to gender fluidity with transgendered people. Please take a listen to the full episode for more on the above and suggestions on opening up your relationship an insight into Jorge's Embodied Spirituality workshop and to hear about Jorge's work with San Pedro, Ayahuasca and his thoughts on integration
“What makes my life extraordinary is to feel that I've contributed to the quality of life of other people. That makes me happy and is going to be meaningful when I'm on my deathbed.” ~ Jorge Ferrer Jorge Ferrer is a clinical psychologist, public speaker, and educator, best known for his participatory approach to transpersonal, psychology, religious studies, integral education, and intimate relationships. He was core faculty for more than 20 years at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, where he also founded the Shamanic Studies Concentration, as the chair of East-West Psychology department. He has served as advisor to the organization Religions for Peace at the UN and has also studied entheogenic shamanism for more than two decades.Jorge is the author of several books, including Participation and the Mystery: Transpersonal Essays in Psychology, Education and Religion. And his fabulous latest book, Love and Freedom: Transcending Monogamy and Polyamory where he promotes relational freedom and assisting individuals to choosing and transforming their relational styles in dynamic, integrative and transcending ways.“What drives me is a selfish reason: to be in a world in which I feel more at home. So, I interact to transform the world.” ~ Jorge Ferrer In this interview: Don't Settle•Develop a habit of constantly seeking your own answers.e.g: Live an intimate life that is more aligned with your evolving potentials, free from ideologies and conditioning. Create your “Home”•Cultivate the sense of feeling at home in your body, in your surrounding areas, your relationships and in nature.•Strive to connect, educate, and create shared understanding.•Be at home in your body in the moment with others. And: “Everything happens in the encounter, everything that happens is in the ‘in-between,' everything emerges ‘in between' because we're always in relationship.” ~ Jorge Ferrer The Quest for Freedom•The energy that you allow to work through you.•The impulse that moves you to take action.•When you work with an idea that is beyond your own self-centered idea of pleasure, happiness, and joy. Life and Creative Energy•Sexuality as the source of genuine creativity.•Sexuality with ourselves and others as a mystery.•Spirituality and sexuality as two sides of the same coin. The Body Knows What's Best for the Body.•Intentionally slow down•Discover, “What is already happening?” Become aware of what the body does naturally. Plus:“Cultivate a quality of listening that includes genuine curiosity.” ~ Jorge Ferrer Humble OpennessAn approach or attitude as a way of being more porous where we cultivate a sense of mental humility and openness. A quality of life that develops when you listen to your body, instinct, and heart. Until soon! Be curious, be inspired, simplify the way… Jorge Ferrerwww.jorgenferrer.com
Persistence pays off! After 15 months of correspondence I was able to catch the big fish: Jorge Ferrer. Jorge is the author of Revisioning Transpersonal Theory and Participation and the Mystery. Participation and the Mystery might be the best integral book I have read since Sex, Ecology and Spirituality because of its overview of both the theory and the application of integral. One of my main drives of this podcast is to help understand integral better. Prior to immersing myself in the integral community, I was largely unaware of many of the pivotal books and thinkers that shaped that which is defined as integral. My introduction was through Ken Wilber's writings but transpersonal theory includes and goes beyond his work. Aware of an apparent chasm between Ferrer's and Wilber's integral worldview, who better to ask than Jorge himself? Can these different perspectives co-exist? His newest book, Love and Freedom: Transcending Monogamy and Polyamory, continues his reputation as a trailblazer. Love and Freedom offers a radical shift to our understanding of relationships: relational freedom. He argues for “…the value of holding a pluralist stance when contrasting monogamy and polyamory -one that underscores the benefits of having a greater diversity of relational choices (thus supporting relational freedom) while maintaining the grounds for critical discernment within and among the relational styles.” Love and Freedom offers a transcending alternative to the mono-poly war: novogamy. Novogamy provides the relationship spectrum that is needed in the 21st century. It allows individuals the “freedom to love whom you want, how you want, and as many as you want, so long as personal integrity, respect, honesty and consent are at the core of any and all relationships”, as Wendy O-Matik beautifully summarizes. Love and Freedom is the quintessential integral (postsecular) relationship book because it gives a fully blossomed vision of what love may be for present and future integralists: “A freer essence of romantic love waits beyond the promises, expectations and delusions of the Romantic Love myth from a bygone era. Once the deceptive spell of monocentric romance is dissolved, a different and more creative love can emerge—perhaps even a finer love that is meaningful, vibrant, and real beyond what one imagined to be possible.” There are so many transformative ways that a shift in our thinking could affect things like spirituality and relationships. The first thing that comes to mind is the Catholic church. 50% of 2.6 billion Christians are Catholic linked to a mythic worldview where women cannot be priests and practitioners are not raised with a healthy relationship to their bodies or sexuality. Jorge explains his perspective on priests and pedophilia and what changes he would make to the church. A big thanks to Jorge for not only being a guest but for being instrumental in connecting me to guests like Michael Lerner, David Loy and David Nichol for the Growing Down podcast. I have found through our correspondence that he was the embodiment of the ideas he praised in his book, which is the hallmark of integral for me. It was an honor and a blessing to have him as a guest. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did! As Jorge is fond of saying: Onward! You can find out more about Jorge Ferrer here: https://www.jorgenferrer.com

Two episodes (or an eternity) ago, I spoke to Jorge Ferrer, Liferay's VP of Engineering. We didn't have enough time to finish the conversation, so we continued a while after - and then I buried the recording /o. Anyway, apart from it being still from "before the release of the current version", it's still relevant stuff, I feel bad about missing to post it. Check for yourself - here it finally is. Today I'm welcoming a repeat guest, Jorge Ferrer, Liferay's VP of Engineering. I've had the great opportunity to ask him a lot of questions that provide deep insight into what's running behind the scenes in the engineering team. We didn't have enough time, so this is part 1 of our conversation, to be continued in episode 58. I need to squeeze in the (already recorded) episode that contains more information about the Javadoc Contest (please participate). I took some time to speak to Jorge Ferrer, Liferay's VP of Engineering about all things Engineering and Development in Liferay. This time I'm not starting with butchering names, but positions. Jorge is one of the very early contributors to Liferay, started as community member and got hired, started the spanish office. After an episode "on the dark side", being the GM for Spain, he's back in engineering. We're talking about his responsibilities within the project, the company, and more.
