Originally I thought I was going to be able to take this Echo with a screen and watch YouTube, Apple+ Amazon Prime, and all the other video items I do on a Fire TV stick. While you can it's not as easy. The video on the Echo Show is more for video calls. They do make it easy for the Food channel (which is great if you have the unit in the kitchen). It also has what appears to be a Hulu app. If you want YouTube you have to open a browser (so again, not as easy as a Fire TV system). I do like it when I ask to see my calendar it puts it up on the screen. This is the same with my grocery list, flash briefing items, and more. I purchased this for the kitchen but it ended up in my bedroom. At first, I thought I was going to have to manually turn the brightness down, but it turns out if you turn the lights off in your room, the Echo Show can figure this out and it dims automatically, and makes the clock much bigger. There are other things you can have scroll on the screen. I have uploaded some photographs to my Amazon account and these can be rotated throughout the screen. If you had someone in a nursing home, you could set this up to share images on their screen (assuming you are controlling their account). I also was amazed at the sound quality of the speakers in the Echo Show 8. It has some bottom-end for such little speakers and it has some volume. All in all, I'm happy with it, and already thinking of getting another one. Originally I was going to get an Echo Spot, but for just a little more money the Echo Show is a much better deal I feel. If you like the show tell a friend or consider donating to support the show.
The first of today's skills has a really bubbly personality. It's followed by two fabulously soothing skills for those with an Echo Show, Echo Spot or Fire TV. This one's for the headphones, guys.Feedback, comments, demos please to ✉️ thedottodotpodcast@gmail.com
I had the pleasure of speaking with Bradley Metrock, CEO of Score Publishing. Bradley is many things, and most certainly all things voice. Bradley has been in the voice space for several years and culminated the Project Voice event, the number one event for voice technology and AI in America. During the podcast, I had the opportunity to learn more about what Bradley does and his vision for the future of voice. He talks in depth about how businesses need to understand the importance of incorporating voice technology within small to medium size companies. If they don’t do it soon, they will quickly fall behind. Bradley is also the Keynote Speaker at Nashville Voice Conference 2020, coming up on August 7 at the Nashville Entrepreneur Center. The event will focus on how all businesses can become more efficient and effective through the creation of Alexa Skills and Google Actions. Paul: How familiar do you believe businesses currently are with voice apps, Alexa skills and Google actions? Bradley: I think it varies, but in general it's pretty low. I view it as defensive in nature rather than offensive in nature. I think a business, including mom and pop gas stations, and as you get into the enterprise space, needs to be working with voice or working with groups like Data Driven Design who are working with voice on their behalf so that they are accumulating knowledge and they're getting acclimated to the space. But the bottom line is that if you're not delving into those waters, you're falling behind, and you're not understanding. Paul: Do you think businesses know that they can build custom applications for Alexa and Google assistant just like they can with websites or mobile apps and how those can actually help them be more efficient and effective? Bradley: I think some of that knowledge is there. They want to turn to professionals, and do it right. I don't think it's part of the mental calculus for a lot of companies. Like do the tools exist? Paul: You wrote a book more than just weather and music, 200 ways to use Alexa. Tell us about that. Tell us about some of those use cases that you've found. Bradley: It's profound. All the things that you can do with Alexa’s ecosystem. I always joke, you could line up a hundred Amazon employees and even they wouldn't know 70% or 80% of some of these things that are in the book. And I'll give you a couple of examples. It's called “Alexa, What am I Holding?” So four Alexa devices that have a front facing camera, like the Echo Show, and The Echo Spot. They have a feature called “Alexa, what am I holding?” Paul: If you had to come up with an idea of big or small to help any kind of business, including your own, with operations or marketing, creating a voice app, an Alexa skill or a Google action, what would it be? Bradley: We just went through that with Project Voice. We wanted to create a voice experience that you don't want to regurgitate the web. So with Project Voice, we thought, what is it that a voice experience for a conference ought to do? And what is it it can do, that's above and beyond regurgitating the web? And one of the things that we came up with that we used to great effect was having speakers talk about their sessions in their own voice. Paul: The goal of the Nashville Voice Conferences is to help people make things happen with their businesses with voice. And, you are the keynote speaker at Nashville Voice Conference 2020, and I'm very proud of that. Can you give us a little preview of what you're thinking will be valuable to the attendees on August 7th, 2020 at the Nashville Entrepreneur Center? Bradley: Sure! I'm thrilled that there is a Nashville Voice Conference, number one. I'm thrilled that it's growing. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/paulhickey/support
In this episode, Teri will talk about the ring light on Echo devices, why it’s there, and what type of information we can get from it. Enjoy! The previous episode that Teri did on the interesting features that recently came to Canada got some very great feedback. Alexa in Canada listeners were very appreciative of being made aware of the features, tips and tricks. That prompted Teri to enlighten Alexa users about the ring light. What is the Ring Light? It’s a light that is formed like a ring which sits on top of the cylindrical shaped Amazon Echo devices. On the Echo Spot, there is a round light around the display. On the other visual display Echo devices, like the Echo Show and Echo Show 5, there is a band of light along the bottom, not a ring light. The Importance of the Ring LightAmazon put a lot of thought into developing the ring light because if a user is looking at their device, it is a way for them to get some feedback about what’s going on, and it also has some security implications. One of the things that people are concerned about is when the device is listening to them. By glancing at the light that is displaying on top of the device, a user gets a hint as to what is going on with the device at any particular moment in time.Different Colors of LightsSolid Blue Light/Dark Blue Light: One might see a spinning Cyan within this color. This is the color that comes up when the device is starting up.When one doesn’t see any color at all, it means that it is working (assuming it’s plugged in and everything has been set up properly) and Alexa is just waiting to hear the wake up so that she can receive a command.Once a user wakes Alexa up, they see a solid darker blue color with a small area of Cyan pointing in the direction of where the sound is coming from. Alexa has the ability to figure out in space where a person is speaking from, which has a lot of implications, including that when you have multiple devices, that is how Alexa knows which device should be responding to a user.Once a user has given their command, they see a solid blue and Cyan as Alexa responds.Other colors that provide useful information include an orange spinning light which spins clockwise to indicate that the device is connecting to the WiFi network. When there is a solid red light, it means that the user has muted the device, and so Alexa is not listening.A pulsing yellow light means that Alexa has a message or a notification for the user, in which case, the user will need to say, “Alexa, play my messages” or “Alexa, what are my notifications?”People can be on a phone call or drop in on other users using their devices, and this is where a pulsing green light comes up as a sign that there is an incoming call or someone is dropping in on the device.A green light spinning counter clockwise means that the user is on an active call or drop in.A white light indicates how high or low the volume is. When a user adjusts the volume level, they should see the ring of white light get bigger or smaller corresponding with the percentage of volume.A spinning white light can also indicate that Alexa Guard is on. Alexa Guard is a way for Alexa to listen to sounds such as glass breaking when you are away. This feature is currently only in the US.The purple light tells us a couple of things. A pulsing purple (or violet light) is an indication that an error occurred during your WiFi set up. A single flash of purple light after an interaction with Alexa means that “Do not Disturb” is turned on. In this episode, Teri will share his impressions of using the new Echo Show 5 that Amazon recently sold tons of during Prime Day (s). Let’s Begin! There are a number of Echo devices available in Canada including the Dot, Echo, Echo Plus, Echo Spot, Echo Show, and the new Echo Show 5. The Echo Show 5 is very well priced at $99.99 which offers great value. What is the Echo Show 5?It’s the second Echo device with a rectangular screen. Its name refers to the size of its five and a half inches screen. It has two microphones which helps in using the far field recognition. It has a volume up and down button on top of it, a micro-USB port, and a 3.5mm audio output which can used to plug into a higher quality stereo system or speaker. It has the power port at the back which plugs into the wall. It’s about 5.8 inches wide, 3.4 inches in height, and 2.9 inches in depth, and comes in either sandstone or charcoal color.Echo Show 5 Versus Echo ShowCompared to the Echo Show, the Show has double the screen size with a higher resolution, but the price difference is huge with the Show going for $300. The Show has better two 10-Watt speakers while the Echo Show 5 has a 1.65 inch 4-Watt speaker. The camera on the Echo Show 5, which enables the user to do video calling, is a one megapixel camera while the one on the Echo Show is a five megapixel camera. The Echo Show 5 lacks a built-in zigbee smart home hub which means if a user has some zigbee compatible smart home devices, and they want a hub to control them, they will need some additional hardware to control them, that is if they only have the Echo Show 5.The sound on the Echo Show 5 is better than the Echo Dot and Echo Spot. The one feature that it has which is not in other Echo devices, is the built-in camera shutter. This is good for people with privacy issues. The physical camera shutter that covers the camera ensures that nobody can hack the camera for whatever reason. There is however a software method of shutting off the camera and the microphone on both the Echo Show and Echo Show 5. Teri’s First ImpressionsWhen he first plugged it in, there was very little setup to do because the Echo devices that are already set up with his home network including the passwords, are already stored with Amazon. He went into the settings to see what he could set up and found several options for how to customize the screen background. It can even be used as a photo frame. It’s a voice-first device but it can also be used as a touch screen. It has the sunrise alarms feature which simulates a sunrise in the morning between 4 am and 9 am.Teri prefers the Echo Show 5 as the best buy compared to other Echo devices, especially the ones with a screen. In this episode, Teri talks about everything that has gone on in the first year since launching the Alexa in Canada podcast, blog and community, and everything that is to come. Happy Birthday Alexa in Canada! When Teri launched the podcast/blog, Amazon had not announced that Alexa was coming to Canada.Teri was interested in voice technology, did some research and discovered that there no resource in Canada for people to learn about Amazon Alexa. He decided to create the blog and started documenting all that he was learning about Amazon Alexa. HighlightsWhen Amazon officially announced Alexa into Canada, Canadians weren’t get the same devices that people in the United States got. The only devices they had in the market were the Echo Dot, the Echo, and the Echo Plus.A lot of Canadians wanted access to the other devices and so they choose to set their addresses to the United States so they could access the devices in the US and use all the skills and features available in the US.Canada used to be a couple months behind with features and there was very limited functionality. Now we have the Echo Dot, Echo, Echo Spot (the first screen one that was introduced), Echo Plus, Echo Show, and the Echo Sub (a subwoofer). Amazon Alexa has also been put into many other different devices and components in Canadian homes like light switches, thermostats, audio speakers, and many more. How Canadians are Embracing the TechnologyIt took Americans approximately 3 years to reach a 7% market adoption rate. The adoption rate in Canada is at 8% within less than a year. The Alexa in Canada CommunityTeri has made some incredible connections and met some incredible people in the voice first space that have taught him so much about voice technology. The podcast has now been downloaded more than 25,000 times in approximately 40 countries around the world. The biggest listenership is in Canada, but Americans form about 50% of the listenership of Canadians. For every 100 Canadian listeners there are 50 American listeners. The Alexa in Canada Facebook group has grown to over 1,000 people. Community members always take time to answer each other’s questions. There is a mailing list and can be signed up on the home page at AlexaInCanada.caThe Flash BriefingTo learn more about voice technology and Amazon Alexa, Teri started the Voice in Canada flash briefing with the core goal of updating people on what is going on in the Amazon Alexa world on a daily basis. He spent a lot of time learning how to launch a flash briefing. With the support and great reviews of listeners, the flash briefing became the “Number 1 Rated Flash Briefing in Canada” and has maintained that since its inception. The flash briefing has so far been downloaded almost 60,000 times and has been listened to in approximately 20 different countries.People wanted detailed advice on how to create a flash briefing which prompted him to create a course called “Flash Briefing Formula”. He has received great reviews on the course.TutorialsTeri created tutorials on the website to help people figure out how to set up devices. When new features came out Teri would update the tutorials to keep up with that.He also created a tutorial on “How to create a flash briefing” Networking and Speaking at ConferencesThe networks Teri has built with different people in the voice first space have led to him being invited to speak at different conferences.Teri joined the VoiceFirst.fm Podcast NetworkHe has guest lectured through video at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology for a marketing class. He taught about flash briefings. The Voice First Health PodcastDue to his background in healthcare as a physician, he was looking for an opportunity to join his passions of technology, education and healthcare which led him to start this podcast. It’s also part of the VoiceFirst.fm Podcast Network.Teri’s goal through the podcast is to learn about what is going on in healthcare with regards to voice technology. He interviews some of the leaders that are doing remarkable things, research, and creating incredible products that are going to transform the way we experience healthcare. He has spoken and keynoted at several medical conferences.Next Project for TeriIt’s hard for people to discover good quality flash briefings on the Amazon skill store because the numbers are growing rapidly. One has to scroll through those lists to find what they need and it’s not a very user friendly process.Teri is about to launch a resource that people can go to to get high quality and vetted flash briefings that will provide value, excellent content and professionally produced. There will be different categories and they will cover different topics. It's been a busy few weeks with both of the top two voice assistant platforms announcing new devices and software improvements, but what does it all mean for brands, designers and developers?Google Home Mini becomes top selling smart speakerThat's right, the Google Home Mini smart speaker outsold all other smart speakers in Q2.Google's intense advertising over the summer months looks like it could be starting to pay off. It still isn't the market leader. Amazon still holds that spot, for now.Takeaway:At the beginning of this year, Google Assistant was a nice-to-have feature in your voice strategy. Google's progress over the summer and the recent sales of the Google Home Mini now mean that obtaining a presence on Google Assistant is unavoidable for brands looking to make serious play in this space. We discuss whether you should use a tool like Jovo for developing cross-platform voice experiencesor whether you should build natively.Dustin's pro tip:If you need access to new feature updates as and when they're released, you should build natively. If you're happy to wait, use something like Jovo.Google rumoured to be launching the Google Home HubIt's rumoured that Google will be releasing a smart display to rival the Amazon Echo Show.In the podcast, we said that this will go on sale in October. That's not the case. The actual sale date hasn't been announced yet.Takeaway:With more voice assistants bringing screens into the equation, designing and developing multi modal experiences is going to be an increasing area of opportunity over the next year.Google becomes multi-lingualGoogle announced multi-lingual support for Google Assistant. That means that you can speak to the Assistant in a different language and have it respond back to you in that language without having to change the language settings. This is a great feature for households that speak more than one language.Takeaway:Although this might not be widely used initially, this is a great step forward in providing a frictionless user experience for those who speak more than one language. For brands, this brings the necessity to internationalise your voice experiences closer to home.Check out the podcast we did with Maaike Dufour to learn more about how to transcreate and internationalise your voice experience.Amazon announces about a million Alexa devicesAmazon announced a whole host of Alexa enabled deviceslast week, including:Echo Dot V2 and Echo Plus V2A new Echo Show (with a 10 inch screen)Echo Auto (for the car)Echo Sub (a subwoofer)Fire TV Recast (a TV set top box)An Alexa-injected microwaveA clock, with Alexa built inEcho Input (turns any speaker into a smart speaker)A Ring security cameraA smart plugAn ampTakeaway:These new devices, whether they succeed or fail, present opportunities for brands, designers and developers in that they provide an insight into a user's context. That can help you shape an experience based around that context. For example, you can now target commuters with long form audio through Alexa while they're driving. You can provide micro engagement through Alexa while your customer is cooking their rice. This could be the beginnings of the 'Alexa Everywhere' movement, which will be laden with opportunities for those who seek to understand where users are and what they're seeking to achieve at that time.Alexa Presentation LanguageThe Alexa Presentation Languageallows you to design and develop custom visuals to enhance your user's screen-accompanying Alexa experience.Until now, if you wanted to serve visuals on an Echo Spot or Echo Show, you'd have to use one of 7 design templates. This announcement means that you can create your own designs and even do things like sync visual transitions with audio and, in future, there'll be support for video and HTML 5.Takeaway:As with many of the items in this week's Rundown, there's an increasing emphasis on multi-modal experiences. Over the next year or so, expect more voice + screen devices. This will mean that you'll need to start thinking about how you can add value through visuals as part of your offering.Kane's pro tip:Even though there are more options for voice + screen, still focus on creating voice-first experiences. Don't let the screen take over. Lead with voice and supplement or enhance with visuals.Alexa smart screen and TV device SDKThis announcementenables device manufacturers to create hardware with a screen that runs Alexa. For example, Amazon will announce the details of how Sony have used the SDK to add Alexa capability to their TVs.Takeaway:For hardware brands, you can now add Alexa to your products. For the rest of us, watch this space. This is yet further evidence to suggest that voice + screen experiences are going to be something users come to expect in future.Introducing the Alexa Connect Kit (ACK)ACK allows device manufacturers to add Alexa to their hardwarewithout having to worry about creating a skill or managing cloud services or security.Essentially, you can add an ACK module to your device, connect it to your micro controller and hey presto, you have an Alexa enabled device. It's the same thing Amazon used to build their new microwave.Takeaway:Another opportunity for hardware brands to add value to your product line and another signal that Alexa will potentially be spreading further and wider. If you haven't thought about how this might impact your business and the opportunities you might find in future, this is a good time to start that thought process. Two final Alexa announcements:Whisper mode, which enables a user to whisper at Alexa and it'll whisper back.Hunch, which is Alexa's first move to become proactive in suggesting things you might want to do based on previous behaviour.Takeaway:In unclear whether either of these things require developers to markup their skills for this in any way or whether Alexa will take care of everything for you. Finally, BixbyBixby will be opening up for public Beta in November after a few months in private beta. There was a webinar this week, exclusive to the private beta members, which included a host of announcements. I'm still trying to get hold of the webinar or someone who can shed some light on it and we'll try and bring you further news on this on the next Rundown.

Last week, I spent two days holed up in a drab Sheraton hotel just outside of downtown San Diego. My only company came from Alexa, in the form of Amazon's new Echo Spot. This is the company's newest Echo device, yet another way to bring Alexa inside your house. It's also the second Echo with a screen and a camera, after the Echo Show. The Spot is a similar thing, only a lot smaller and a lot better-looking.
