That seems like the appropriate word if you analyze what happened with OpenAI this week. After being built into every conceivable Microsft interface, Apple announced that it would integrate OpenAI into all of its operating systems across devices via Siri.By locking up Microsoft and Apple, it has effectively locked out Google, at least for now. That will leave Google itself as the only large implementation of its Gemini AI family. This gives Apple a global advantage in the iPhone versus Android battle. Few will prefer Gemini to OpenAI.Beyond that, Apple successfully showed how its own ‘Apple Intelligence' will face inwards to the device, interoperating with all apps and supporting ‘actions' while leaving all user data on the device. And when you need more power than the device can deliver, the new Apple Intelligence Cloud steps up in a fully encrypted secure environment. Even Apple cannot decrypt your data as it has no keys.Ben Thompson from Stratechery sums up Apple's play as follows:This is good news for Apple in two respects. First, with regards to the title of this Article, the fact it is possible to be too early with AI features, as Microsoft seemed to be in this case, implies that not having AI features does not mean you are too late. Yes, AI features could differentiate an existing platform, but they could also diminish it. Second, Apple's orientation towards prioritizing users over developers aligns nicely with its brand promise of privacy and security: Apple would prefer to deliver new features in an integrated fashion as a matter of course; making AI not just compelling but societally acceptable may require exactly that, which means that Apple is arriving on the AI scene just in time. The concept of “just in time” seems appropriate. Although, as a developer possessing all of the beta products, I can say that very few of the features announced are yet available. The contrast with Microsoft couldn't be more extreme. Its Recall product, which took a screen recording every five seconds and stored its findings in clear text on the device, got a backlash from journalists and privacy campaigners. Microsoft has all but canceled the product, and its PR tail is between its legs. Apple's ‘Crush' ad has almost been forgotten.Microsoft could make a mistake here. It is already working on products competing with OpenAI and might be tempted to go alone. What Bing is to Google, Microsoft AI will be to OpenAI. If it does so, it will once again shoot itself in the foot. OpenAI is far ahead in features and capabilities. Google cannot integrate it. Microsoft has gained an advantage from having done so. Apple too. Don't bite the hand that feeds you seems an apt reminder. This week's essays focus a lot on the social impact of innovation and venture capital.Ted Gioia's essay about “Universe 25” focuses on the Durkheim concept of ‘anomie.' It is the idea that our isolation leads to meaninglessness in life.“More than 100 years ago, sociologist Emile Durkheim studied the problem of anomie. That's not a word you hear very often nowadays. But we need to bring it back.Anomie is a sense that life has no purpose or meaning. The people who suffer from it are listless, disconnected, and prone to mental illnesses of various sorts. Durkheim believed, for example, that suicide was frequently caused by anomie. But the most shocking part of Durkheim's analysis was his view that anomie increased when social norms were lessened. You might think that people rejoice when rules and regulations get eliminated. But Durkheim believed the exact opposite.”Gioia examines the aimlessness of a world where people live in social media. The Venture Capital essays are excellent. Sam Altman's ‘Startup Playbook' contains intelligent advice for startup founding teams. And Mario Gabriele's piece about ‘How to Find a Unicorn' has good advice for emerging fund managers. Omri Drory's piece: How VCs Become A******s - is both funny and true. A great read This is a public episode.

Apple is at the center of two big shifts in tech: privacy rules that have shaken the digital ad market and Europe's move toward a common charging standard for devices. UK's new prime minister Indian-born Rishi Sunak reimposed the government's ban on fracking, which had been lifted by his predecessor, Liz Truss, in her short-lived premiership, The Guardian reports. Apple has confirmed future iPhones will be equipped with USB-C charging ports after the EU made it a common standard, Wall Street Journal reports. And IBM's India head has warned staff against moonlighting, according to Economic Times. Notes: UK's new prime minister Rishi Sunak reimposed the government's ban on fracking, which had been lifted by his predecessor, Liz Truss, in her short-lived premiership, The Guardian reports. Fracking will, in effect, remain banned under Rishi Sunak's government, as the new prime minister was committed to the policy in the ruling conservative party's 2019 manifesto. Apple has confirmed it will follow European Union legislation that sets a common charging standard for mobile phones and other portable electronic devices, the Wall Street Journal reports. “Obviously, we'll have to comply,” Greg Joswiak, Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said on Oct. 25 while speaking at The Wall Street Journal's Tech Live conference, the paper reports. Separately, Apple, yesterday, asked its global supply chain partners to take more steps to address their greenhouse gas emissions and take a comprehensive approach to decarbonisation, the company said in a press release. IBM's India head has warned its Indian employees against moonlighting, saying critical client data and commercial assets could be at risk, Economic Times reports. “While an IBMer's time outside of work is their own, it also requires them to avoid engaging in activities that create a conflict of interest,” read an internal note from India managing director Sandip Patel sent to the employees, according to ET. Walmart's Indian ecommerce company Flipkart is considering raising $2 billion to $3 billion at a valuation of more than $40 billion to expand its product range in India and challenge rivals, the Mint reported on Tuesday, citing two people with direct knowledge of the matter. The world's biggest retailer is keen to bring in strategic investors for the Indian company but is also open to selling to large pure-play investment firms, according to the report which is behind a paywall but was picked up by Reuters. WATI (WhatsApp Team Inbox), a Hong Kong startup offering a customer and sales engagement tool, has raised $23 million in series B funding, led by Tiger Global, the company said in a press release. Existing investors Sequoia Capital India & Southeast Asia, and new investors DST Global Partners and Shopify joined in. Devtron, a startup that provides an open-source internal DevOps platform for Kubernetes adoption, has raised $12 million in new funding led by global software investor Insight Partners, according to a press release. Devtron will use the new capital to scale its team, drive adoption of its platform and expand into new markets. Theme music courtesy Free Music & Sounds: https://soundcloud.com/freemusicandsounds

Here comes the “Normal Computing” news of the week! What is “Normal Computing”? Stuff about Microsoft, Apple, Google, and the like. Big Tech. The “Big 5”. Mainstream. You know. “Normal”.Microsoft drops “Office” name… “Microsoft is now 365”In “well that's a dumb idea” news… Microsoft is officially killing off their “Microsoft Office” branding — which has been a cornerstone of the company for over 30 years — and renamed their office suite… “Microsoft 365”.As someone who worked on the Microsoft Office development team for many years, I have thoughts:* You use “Microsoft Office” to do “Office” stuff. What do you do with “Microsoft 365”? 365 stuff?* Everyone knows the “MS Office” brand. Ditching it is stupid.* The marketing and product executives at Microsoft clearly have too much time on their hands, and nothing to do.* In short: This is dumb.Apple makes new, colored iPads with USB-C“We're so excited to bring the completely redesigned iPad to our most advanced iPad lineup ever,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “With a large 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display, powerful A14 Bionic chip, a first-ever landscape front camera, fast wireless connectivity, USB-C, and support for incredible accessories like the new Magic Keyboard Folio, the new iPad delivers more value, more versatility — and is simply more fun.”Quick thoughts:* USB-C! Huzzah!* They moved the front facing camera to make it more logical. Good move.* Colors are cool. Reminds me of when the iMacs got multiple colors.* Strangely, it appears the stylus (Apple Pencil) is not USB-C. So it needs an adapter. Odd. In fact we know this is so, because former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman claimed during the Copilot technical preview that “training [machine-learning] systems on public data is fair use”.Well—is it? The answer isn't a matter of opinion; it's a matter of law. Naturally, Microsoft, OpenAI, and other researchers have been promoting the fair-use argument. Nat Friedman further asserted that there is “jurisprudence” on fair use that is “broadly relied upon by the machine[-]learning community”. But Software Freedom Conservancy disagreed, and pressed Microsoft for evidence to support its position. According to SFC director Bradley Kuhn:”“[W]e inquired privately with Friedman and other Microsoft and GitHub representatives in June 2021, asking for solid legal references for GitHub's public legal positions … They provided none.”Firefox version 106 gets… sneaker features? The One-Hundred and Sixth major version of Firefox came out this week. What's new?* Editing PDF's within Firefox.* Text recognition from images (on macOS).* Swipe navigation on Linux. But the big feature that Mozilla is touting? They partnered with a sneaker maker to promote… feelings? Or colors? Or something?“‘Independent Voices' are the voices of the past and present that create a better future,” Lascio said. “I chose this as my inspiration for the collaboration because it feels authentic to me but it also aligns with Firefox and the vision that we can make the world better, on the internet and beyond.” - Keely Lascio, Street-wear and sneaker designerThis new feature lets you tell Firefox that you are… an… “Activist”… with a “balanced intensity”… which… makes… the window border… blue? Thanks to… sneakers? This is clearly what we call a “Killer Feature” of a web browser.Oh. And they also added “Firefox View”. App Store antitrust suit might make Supreme Court https://www.cultofmac.com/592676/app-store-monopoly/ Apple’s legal team could soon be headed to the U.S. Supreme Court to face an anti-trust case being levied against the company. U.S. Supreme Court justices heard an hour of arguments for an anti-trust lawsuit against Appletoday. The nine justices appeared to be open to letting the lawsuit move up to the highest court in the U.S. and it could bring huge changes to the App Store if Apple loses. Apple is being accused of breaking federal antitrust laws by monopolizing the way applications are installed on the iPhone. Plaintiffs in the lawsuit claim that Apple’s 30% cut on all sales in the App Store are causing consumers to overpay. Lead plaintiff Robert Pepper of Chicago argued that Apple’s App Store monopoly leads to inflated prices because developers have to account for Apple’s 30% fee. The plaintiffs want Apple to open up iOS so apps can be installed from sources other than the App Store. Trump ready to levy 10 percent import tariff on iPhone, MacBook https://www.cultofmac.com/592762/trump-iphone-tariff-macbook-trump/ Pres. Trump told the Wall Street Journal, that he’s prepared to put tariffs on all products being shipped from China that don’t already have them. And he’s also ready to raise the import fees on items already taxed from 10 percent to 25 percent. When the WSJ asked if that includes handsets like the iPhone as well as notebook computers, he said “Depends on what the rate is, I can make it 10%, and people could stand that very easily.” iPhone XR isn’t a dud; It’s Apple’s best selling model https://www.cultofmac.com/593214/iphone-xr-sales-xs-apple-best-selling-model/ A company VP says the iPhone XR has outsold the iPhone XS series since the cheaper device came out last month. Greg Joswiak, Apple VP of iOS, iPad and iPhone Product Marketing, told CNET that the XR has “been our most popular iPhone each and every day since the day it became available.” The situation is quite similar to what happened a year ago, when analysts mistakenly believedthe iPhone X was a flop when it was actually Apple’s best selling handset. Ten reasons I chose iPhone XR over the XS/XS Max https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7MfWx38DMU&t=1s Even cameras costing thousands can’t do pics like Smart HDR http://instagram.com/erfon
