All this week we've been looking at David Kinnaman and Mark Matlock's book Faith for Exiles, and the five ministry practices churches and families must pursue to lead kids into life-long faith. The research done by Kinnaman and Matlock indicates that in order to form a lasting faith, we must curb the cultural tendency toward entitlement and self-centeredness by getting our kids engaged in counter-cultural mission. This does not mean that we need to be sure they get involved in a missions trip once or twice a year. Sure, those experiences can be valuable for our kids. But engaging in countercultural mission means living as a faithful presence wherever we are, by trusting God's power and living differently from cultural norms. This means that we bloom for God as His ambassador wherever we are planted. We need to teach our kids to play to his glory, study to his glory, conduct themselves in relationships to his glory, and live every moment to his glory. Let's pray that our kids grow to embrace and live the faith!
All this week we're looking at David Kinnaman and Mark Matlock's book Faith for Exiles, and the five ministry practices churches and families must pursue to lead kids into life-long faith. The research done by Kinnaman and Matlock indicates that in order to form a lasting faith, we must ground and motivate our kids through training for vocational discipleship. This means that they know and live out God's calling on their lives, especially in the arena of work while conforming their ambitions to God's purposes. In today's world, the culture teaches our kids to pursue work and vocation as a passport to privilege. Rather than seeing work as a way to serve God and further His kingdom, our work is about making money, pursuing fame, and building up the kingdom of me, myself, and I. One of the key opportunities facing the twenty-first-century church is to help kids learn that they have been made for something, and that something is a life where faith is integrated into their work.

The research done by Kinnaman and Matlock indicates that in order to form a lasting faith, we must work to create a church and family culture where rather than separating the generations, meaningful intergenerational relationships are formed with fellow believers who live and model a deep faith in Jesus Christ. Our culture is marked by isolation and mistrust between different generations. Some specific ways to make this happen include starting a mentoring program at your church where an older believer is paired with a young person. Our worship services should be inter-generational rather than generationally-segmented. And our homes should be places where our kids are exposed to older Christians as we practice hospitality. Endeavor to give your kids the gift of sitting under the wisdom of those who are older.

All this week we're looking at David Kinnaman and Mark Matlock's book Faith for Exiles, and the five ministry practices churches and families must pursue to lead kids into life-long faith. The research done by Kinnaman and Matlock indicates that in order to form a lasting faith, we must lead our kids into developing the muscles of cultural discernment. Exercising cultural discernment means that we all must take part in a robust learning community that seeks, under the authority of the Bible, to wisely navigate today's rapidly changing culture. This means that we must develop their ability to compare the beliefs, values, customs, and creations of the world we live in with those of the world we belong to, which is the Kingdom of God. And once that comparison has been made, we need to anchor our lives to the theological, ethical, and moral norms of God's Kingdom. Parents, in order to lead your kids into living counter-culturally to the glory of God, you must be doing the same.
With so many of our young adults graduating from high school and walking away from the faith, what can we do to lead them to embrace a lasting faith? All this week we're going to look at David Kinnaman and Mark Matlock's book Faith for Exiles, and the five ministry practices churches and families must pursue to lead kids into life-long faith. The research done by Kinnaman and Matlock indicates that in order to form a lasting faith, we must lead our kids into experiencing intimacy with Jesus. This is best done by clearing what they call the religious clutter that so easily sidetracks us. We've been complicit in presenting a Jesus to compete at the same level as our other affinities and affiliations. In addition we've expected way too little from our kids. They are more willing to be challenged than the church is willing to challenge them. And, parents must be living a life of spiritual vitality where they give everything they have and are over to Jesus. Let's lead our kids into a deep and lasting faith.

What if the challenges we face today are the catalyst for a profound reformation in the church? Join us for an enlightening conversation with Reverend Dr. Gary Kinnaman, who brings over half a century of ministry experience to examine the impact of social media, COVID-19, political turmoil, and racial tensions on church life. Gary offers a seasoned perspective on transitioning from traditional church leadership to broader ministry work, drawing intriguing parallels with historical figures like Dietrich Bonhoeffer and highlighting innovative approaches to church gatherings around the globe. We'll also share the remarkable journey of Pat Hickcox, who turned his barn in Alpine, Arizona into a vibrant micro church community. Discover how Pat's small gathering blossomed into a spiritual haven over three years, rooted in the core values of community and fellowship outlined in Acts chapter 2. This episode underscores the dynamic role of the Holy Spirit in bridging cultural divides and spreading the gospel, reminiscent of the early church's expansion from Jewish to Gentile communities.Lastly, we delve into the integration of faith into daily life, using the story of Martha to explore modern distractions and the need for spiritual presence. Reverend Dr. Kinnaman offers insight into the spiritual awakening among Gen Z and the importance of humility and the Holy Spirit for leaders. Romans 2:1-4 (NIV)You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance? 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (NIV)Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.Love never fails. Reflection Questions: 1. What is your position on God’s view regarding sex and marriage? How have you come to your view? Where is your view supported by Scripture?2. Do you think we can hold a position on sex and marriage and still have genuine loving relationships with people who think and or live differently? Why or why not? Have you found this easy or difficult?3. When we look at the list of sins listed in Romans 1:24-32, why do you think the church has tended to make the issue of same sex relationships such a focus over other sins listed there? What examples do you see in the life and ministry of Jesus where he crosses relational and cultural lines in order to show a posture of love and value of people that may not share his biblical or moral position on an issue? How is this a model for us on how to posture our lives toward people in our culture? What would our lives look like if were modeling the posture of Jesus? Be specific.4. What groups of people or individuals do you have a difficult time living out a loving posture like Jesus? What makes it difficult? What do you think Jesus would want you to do?5. What faith step could you take to move toward people that might think or live differently than you? (that don’t hold your same biblical or moral positions)?6. How do you think the church should engage with and relate to people that think or live differently than our biblical or moral position? What would that look like for Journey Church? Joel Kinnaman is no stranger to the action film genre. After starring in large films such as the 2014 "Robocop," both "Suicide Squad" and "The Suicide Squad" and the television series "Altered Carbon," he may have found his most physically and emotionally demanding role to date in legendary director John Woo's newest film "Silent Night." Having to play the role of a father who goes on a quest for revenge over the holidays with no lines of dialogue, the film relies on Kinnaman's physical performance to drive most of the story. Joel was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work on the film, which will be released in theaters from Lionsgate on December 1st. A recent article in the Atlantic reveals how the political polarization in the United States is now tearing evangelical churches apart. And Marvin Olasky, the former editor of World Magazine, writes about the dramatic change he witnessed among evangelicals over his long career. Drawing from thousands of letters he received, Olasky concludes, “The Republican party platform has become more important than the gospel for many who identify as evangelicals.” Special guest co-host Drew Dyck joins Phil and Skye to discuss the articles. Then, president of Barna research, David Kinnaman, is back with more stats to unpack. With a record number of pastors thinking seriously about quitting, and political polarization listed among the top reasons, Kinnaman says the church is facing a crisis of discipleship. He believes we need a political theology that's rooted in the gospel rather than partisanship. But is it too late? David Kinnaman, CEO of the Barna Group, joins the Cause+Effect Podcast to discuss some of their most recent research concerning Christianity and the emerging generation. Kinnaman argues that in a world where always-connected smart devices and search algorithms educate and entertain, digital Babylon is the new context for discipleship. His recent book, Faith for Exiles, reveals findings from a groundbreaking three-year research study of young Christians whose faith remains resilient even in exile. Kinnaman remains full of faith that there is a path back to the church for many of these exiles, on this important episode Trent and Rick Dunham discuss Barna's five research-based practices that could lead that way.
To be called of God to the Pastorate may be perhaps the highest calling. It is an honor, a privilege, a leading, a CALL for a lifetime of very special service to Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ of Glory. It is a call from which anyone, having put the hand to the plow, should never turn back:SHOULD NEVER QUIT.But then came a disturbing survey conducted by the respected Barna Group and its President David Kinnaman which found through its survey that:HALF OF U.S. PROTESTANT CLERICS CONSIDER LEAVING PULPITIf that survey is accurate, 1 out of 2 Protestant Pastors in the United States, 1 OUT OF 2 are considering resigning from the pulpit. Not the church, but the pulpit itself, the calling to be a Pastor. That is a startingly and disturbing fact, is it not, again assuming it is accurate. 8.7 million Americans resigned their jobs in August and September. If 1 out of 2 Protestant Pastors do in fact actually resign, that would indeed be:THE GREAT SPIRITUAL RESIGNATION.WHY? The survey says that a major contributor is the PANDEMIC. That says President Kinnaman of THE BARNA GROUP became for Pastors a game changer. Congregations wore masks. They were required to comply with Social Distancing requirements and remain six feet apart. Congregations were subject to testing people. In some states, in–person church services were prohibited. Many churches and Pastors were, according to their leaders, persecuted and unfairly treated, such has occurred so often in California, New York, New Jersey and other states. The COVID scare caused many parishioners to avoid church, not to go in–person and be content with things on–line or with other in–person substitutes. It was indeed a dark day for that institution, that place where those who sought to worship Jesus Christ once gathered. As a result, so many Pastors, drawn to personal ministry, experienced a deep and disturbing sense of ISOLATION. The spirit of the live church could never be replicated on–line, never. There was no live singing, no praise. No choirs to thrill the hearts of those in the pews. There were no spiritual hugs. No personal sharing. The internet, said so many Pastors, conveyed mechanical words and pictures only without sensory experiences. It was for them a dark and sterile day for the church. Pastors, who formerly felt the working of the Holy Spirit now found themselves unavoidably becoming ON–LINE CONTENT CREATORS and in addition, VIDEO PRODUCERS for which many were not trained nor motivated by. The content so often was missing spiritual dynamic. The spirit, the soul, the sensory experiences of the live church at work was missing and could never, ever be replicated virtually and on–line. Even as much of the spirituality of the institutional church was missing, so it was in the hearts and souls of so many Pastors. It was not, they felt, the ministry to which they were originally called. That gave rise to this newfound SENSE OF ISOLATION, even in adequacy and led to very tangible feelings of deep desire for resignation. They began to lose the commitment which the original twelve disciples of Jesus Christ had. They began to lose the NEVER QUIT spirit of the DAMASCUS ROAD ENCOUNTER OF APOSTLE PAUL. The virtual world of ministry, according to the Barna survey was not acceptable to as many as 1 out of 2 Protestant Pastors. They were called, they said, to live pulpit ministry and not to become TV–stars and actors. There was also the ever–rising financial requirements of the institutional church. Many Pastors had little business experience and no aptitude FUNDRAISING. But church budgets increased, and did so dramatically. The costs of running the ministries and maintaining the facilities of the institutional church continued to grow to the point where the demand for finances, for fundraising became a major priority of a Pastor's job description. More demand was made on regular timing. In addition, fundraising occurred for the expansion of church ministries and special projects, especially missionary endeavors. As the church grew, so did the demand for larger and better facilities, current and state of the art. Those financial demands dulled the spiritual vitality of the Pastors. Big was better. Size mattered. The financial changes were radical and in the minds and hearts of so many Pastors, made ministry that much more difficult. There began to develop what the Barna Group surveyed called the:CHURCH CONSUMER CULTURE.Even as in the economic world the consumer ruled, and what the consumer wanted or demanded was the way things work, so it began to be the same with the church. So many congregants came to church to GET MORE THAN GIVE. That parishioner became demanding, requiring catering to wants and needs, much more theologically critical, running the church with proactive Boards of Directors making decisions which so often conflicted with the CALLING of the Pastor. CATERING became more prevalent than CONVICTING. And:ME BECAME MORE IMPORTANT THAN HIM!Divisions came so often. Congregations split. New churches were found and the former church suffered. The leadership of the Pastor, the respect for the Pastor's credibility, for the Pastor's CALLING, for the once dynamic SPIRITUAL MINISTRY waned. Many Pastors failed to exercise that leadership or allowed themselves to be subjected to the wishes and whims of an ever–growing demanding congregation. And so began to arise the feeling of frustration and the consideration of:THE GREAT RESIGNATION.The pandemic, the virtual world, all things on–line, slowly but surely produced this change, this sometimes radical change and slowly but surely, these major changes affected the sense of CALLING which these Pastors once had. So many did not have the spiritual muscle of the Apostle Paul, or the twelve disciples or so many others of the old and original church and they were ready for THE GREAT RESIGNATION. So many were unable to take THE STAND, stand up for what they believed was right, what they knew was their calling, what they knew God would have them do and succumb to the pressures of the new consumer culture which began affecting the church in so many ways. The institution dominated the leader. So many Pastors lost the ability to say NO. And in time, a pandemic culture two years old and more ever–growing, 1 out of 2 began to seriously consider becoming a part of:THE GREAT AMERICAN RESIGNATION.The bright flame of the CALL of Jesus Christ began to BURN OUT.
After the mess that was 2020, we had such high hopes for 2021. Were our expectations met? Phil and Skye look back on the year when the evangelical empire dug in its heels. Those opposed to #MeToo and Black Lives Matter responded by labeling empathy a sin. Voices advocating for women and people of color within the SBC left the denomination. The Salvation Army reversed course on racial sensitivity, and female scholars faced a backlash for exposing Christian nationalism and patriarchy. Will 2022 be any different, or will the sorting of the entire culture into Red and Blue tribes continue? And how wide will the rift between classical and cultural evangelicals get? Then, the president of Barna Group, David Kinnaman, joins Skye to launch a new reoccurring segment—Barna Briefs. Kinnaman reveals brand new data about the state of the church and how the pandemic has revealed wide discontent among churchgoers with their congregations. He also says popular church structures are clearly insufficient for forming mature disciples and new church models are desperately needed. Kinnaman also reveals an alarming number of pastors are ready to leave ministry. Is there a silver lining to all of the troubling data?
