The Gospel Must Be Spoken

Hi, I'm John Sorensen, President of Evangelism Explosion International, and you're listening to Share Life Today. In a recent study done by Barna Research, half of Generation Z Christians that they surveyed said that they believe “letting your actions speak rather than using words to explain your faith” is evangelism. Fifty percent! Now today, we're going to tackle two important things that we need to know regarding words and actions when it comes to evangelism. First, you cannot share the Gospel with someone by some form of osmosis. Words must be shared. Second, you can't share the Gospel by a simple act of kindness alone. While that act is wonderful, it points no one to Christ. The Bible is clear that the Gospel must be spoken with love, with grace, with winsomeness. With a little discipleship, we can become great, verbal Gospel witnesses and share life today. Join us for Go Training Day as we prepare to share our faith between Easter and Pentecost alongside Go Movement. For more, visit sharelife.today.

A new Barna Group study reveals an alarming trend; for the first time as long as it has been measured, young women are leading Gen Z’s exodus from the church. Results of the study show that women ages 18-24 are less likely than young men the same age to identify with a faith or be active in church. What are the challenges and opportunities for the Church in this shift? Cicely Corry, the Editorial Director at Barna and an expert on this study, will join Seth and Deb to talk about the results of the survey with ideas on how to reach out to this demographic and how many in this age group have become more open to God today than before the pandemic!Donate to Moody Radio: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/morningshow/wdlmSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

(we just covered this when we allow the Word of God to be authoritative in our life as it all points to Christ)Second, will I allow God to work on my rough edges to be built into God's spiritual house? Living Stones Built into a Spiritual HouseEph. 2:19-22 3- POSITIVE FAMILY EXPERIENCES (FAMILY)The third and final part of building Spiritual Vibrancy is a Positive Family Experience Let me show you some statistics in the home that may challenge us all……HOW DO WE BRING THIS ALL TOGETHER??[1]- The Bible is good and you can read that anywhere[2]- The Church community is good but you can enjoy that without any real connection with the Word of God or taking it home [3]- Positive family experiences can happen external from church and void of the bibleBUT when all done together it brings growth individually and growth to those around us….

In the last five decades, Precept has created Bible studies and resources in over 90 languages, distributed in nearly 190 countries and on six continents. But CEO David Arthur felt they were missing an entire generation of people—namely millennials and Generation Z believers. Partnering with Barna Research, they discovered three important facts that helped them develop their brand-new Bible study resource named Yarrow. The next generation wants desperately to understand how the truth of the Bible connects to their daily lives and actual hardships. They long for a relationship with God and are interested in the Bible but don't know where to start. They need a guide who can help them get started and know where to go next. They are busy and deeply connected to technology. Yarrow is determined to meet them where they are with materials that speak to their way of life and fit into their daily routines and habits. So, the studies in Yarrow are designed to be relevant, guided, and flexible. David hopes to see a generation so in love with God and His Word that the culture around them is greatly impacted. Their vision is that every believer in Christ, lives out God's Word every day. They know that's a huge vision, but they also know we serve a big God. Connect with David: www.yarrow.org

We develop our way of looking at the world—our worldview—before we turn 13. Remarkably, new research finds that fewer than one in ten parents think through how to guide their children spiritually during those critical years.   Dr. George Barna directs the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University and includes these findings in his new book Raising Spiritual Champions: Nurturing Your Child's Heart, Mind and Soul. “Everybody has a worldview. You need a worldview to get through the day,” Barna says. “So children are going to develop a worldview whether their parents are involved in it or not. That is a vacuum that has to be filled.”  If parents don't work toward developing their children's spiritual life, other worldviews will fill that void. “Without their parents being there to help guide them, they're just doing the best they can to make sense of it all.” Barna offers ways to help parents to live out their roles as disciple-makers.  “The first of those is to recognize that God gave them these children to raise up to be disciples,” he says.  So it's important to be intentional and not outsource this critical part of parenting.   “They have to have not only a commitment, but a plan to take in these children during those formative 12 years, and do everything they can to lead them down the right path.” That begins by knowing what beliefs you as a parent want your children to embrace.  “Why? Because we do what we believe. In essence, your worldview is based on your beliefs, that then gets translated into behavior,” he says.   “The only way that you can be Christlike is to think like Jesus so that you can live like Jesus.”  Children see when stated beliefs are not reflected in behavior.  “Kids don't trust their parents anymore because their parents say one thing and do another. You want to get to your kids? Model the beliefs that you're trying to teach them. When they see you live it out, then they're going to say, ‘Okay, I see it. It works. My parents believe it. I'm going to run with it.'”  Underlying all of this, Dr. George Barna recommends that Christian parents bear in mind the context of all of their parenting.  “Parenting is a vital battle in the spiritual war in which we live,” he says. “We have to be aware of the nature of that battle if we're going to fight it well.”  Follow-up links for more information and inspiration: Specific recommendations and insights for parents and families about building their faith in young, preteen children How deep and widespread the problem is: too many children are not being nurtured in how to understand and practice their faith Solutions in George Barna's new book Raising Spiritual Champions -- his 60th! Type Preacher Preacher! And welcome to everyone who has joined us in person. We are in the 4th week of our series on Mental Health called Peace of Mind.We have talked about mental health myths, anxiety, depression…In the next weeks we are talking about negativity, trauma, and burnout. Please join us and invite someone.   Today we are going to talk about a huge mental health problem. This problem is common, overlooked, and leads to dangerous health issues.   Worry According to the World Health Organization, Americans have a bigger prob with this issue than people in any other country of world. We are the wealthiest nation on earth… but we are the most worried nation on earth. We're number one!  USA USA USA!   According to Barna Research    • 60% of adults in the United States struggle with worry and stress daily. This means that over half of you are so worried that while I talk your mind will drift from the message towards your worry.  Worry is always fighting for your attention. It is always present but wants to be front of mind. Let's try to understand worry.   Worry Adam & Eve were not created with worry.  They had nothing to worry about. Worry entered the world when sin entered the world. We worry because of our sinful nature. Our sinful nature always defaults to FEAR – NOT FAITH.  KEY - Because of SIN your thoughts default toward fear. No one is awake at 2am, unable to sleep because they are trying to figure out how to manage their peace and joy. No you are worried about something… Kids, health, job, aging loved ones, politics, terrorism, wars, racism, price of gas.   All of this worry will lead to anxiety. We talked about anxiety 2 weeks ago. What's the difference between anxiety and worry?   Worry & Anxiety Worry & anxiety are related, but different. Let me simplify at the risk of oversimplifying. • We tend to experience worry in our minds.  We rehearse worry in our mind. • We generally experience anxiety in our bodies. Anxiety effects our physical body.   Worry is often specific, and Anxiety is often general and broad. You might WORRY about something specific – I might miss my flight. You might be ANXIOUS about traveling in general. You may be worried about something specific and not anxious generally. You may be anxious generally but not worried about anything specific.   However, we are to understand the difference, Jesus us tells us “Do not worry.” We are going to look at Matthew 6 if you want to turn in your Bibles. Multiple times in this chapter Jesus tells us not to worry. In a few verses Jesus hits the 5 most worried about topics and instructs us to NOT WORRY.   5 worry topics • Finances • Food • Fitness    • Fashion   • Future   Matthew 6:24-25 (NIV) 24 “…You cannot serve both God and money. 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Jesus mentions money – finances. What you eat or drink – food.Your body – fitness. What you will wear – fashion.Your life – future. Jesus says do not worry about these things.   5 worry topics • Finances • Food • Fitness    • Fashion   • Future   JESUS KNOWS US SO WELL! We tend to overly focus on & obsess on one of these 5 topics.   Everything on this list is TEMPORARY. Jesus tells us to not worry about the temporary, but would rather us focus on the eternal.   To those worried about finances. Jesus says you can't serve both God and money.  Is your worry about money an indication that you are serving money? Serve God and don't be worried about the dollar. Our culture often calls it the “almighty dollar.”  It is not almighty.

Hi, I'm John Sorensen, President of Evangelism Explosion International, and you're listening to Share Life Today. Have you checked off your Christian to do list today? Barna Research did a study that shares that most churchgoers equate spiritual maturity with following a list of rules. But, you know, that's not what the Bible says at all! Instead, Jesus tells us to abide in Him to produce spiritual fruit. Spiritual maturity isn't measured by checking all the boxes—it's measured by the Fruit of the Spirit. And the Fruit of the Spirit is produced by the Lord working in us as we abide in Him! Lamentations three says because of the Lord's great love we're not consumed - His mercy is new every morning, and great is His faithfulness! The Lord is so gentle with us and faithful to us. So, instead of focusing on what you think will make you look like a better Christian, focus on the power of the Holy Spirit, and spread the Gospel gently and faithfully to everyone you can. In this "identity" episode, Dr. Patty dives into what it looks like to reflect true Biblical Christianity as compared to the counterfeit worldviews of the Pharisees of the Bible or the modern-day self-righteous religious spirit and the New Age belief system.   She is referencing what she learned from the book  Am I Being Deceived?  by Drs. Mark and Patti Virkler.  No one counterfeits anything that is not real or valuable.  True Biblical Christianity combines the Word of God with the Holy Spirit with His interpretation and power.  the New Age belief system is Lie number one which espouses the belief in the spiritual realm apart from God as its source and leader.  So it is spirit without the Bible as a guide.  This lie opens participants to dark spiritual forces that can damage the soul and keep them from eternal life.   Pharisaicalsm or the self-righteous religious spirit believes in the Word of God apart from the Holy Spirit.  This worldview as people begin with their own minds to understand the Bible,  with an emphasis on the rules of the Bible, being known more for what they are against than what they are for.  Leaving out the Holy Spirit and His nature and character causes them to reflect an unloving, distant, and punishing God.  Dr. Patty summarizes an interesting Barna Research study on the worldview of American Christians that reveals the costs of believing and living according to the counterfeits.  Jesus shares His heart on this subject and leads you on a path to discover His will for you in the Experience Jesus encounter time.    Links references in this episode: New to the Podcast?  Check out the Trailer Episode for the Biblical Foundation for Experiencing Jesus!  https://PattyEJ.Podbean.com/e/trailer-episode-experience-jesus-with-dr-patty-sadallah The Special Place Encounter Exercise   https://bit.ly/3cEkYBC Am I Being Deceived by Drs. Hi, I'm John Sorensen, President of Evangelism Explosion International, and you're listening to Share Life Today. Have you heard of the Great Commission? Well, in a study Barna Research conducted, they found that 51% of churchgoers were not familiar with the term “The Great Commission”; another 25% had heard of it, but couldn't recall the meaning, and only 17% knew what it meant and could articulate it. Now, what does this mean? Well frankly, it's not good. As our culture moves further away from a Christian worldview, it will be more important that we as believers are able and willing to, “go and make disciples.” Jesus declares in the book of Matthew that “the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.” Do you want to see more Christians equipped to be able to go into the harvest field? Do you yourself want to be better equipped? Well, we can help. We train believers to share their faith so that together we CAN in fact fulfill the Great Commission. They never realize that there is an unseen realm cloaked in secrecy, and shielded in misinformation. The Spiritual realm is very real, active, and present. Even if the believer walks around oblivious to the battle ground they find themselves in. As we are leaving Babylon, we must guard ourselves from these spiritual attacks and not allow ourselves or our brothers and sisters in Christ to be slowed down in their exodus from Babylon. This article tackles the question of defining morality based on one's worldview. it provides polling data from Barna Research on America's changing views on its application. ConclusionWhat speaks loudest in America today is that over 70% desire to set their own standards by rejecting those offered by the Creator of the universe. And, 34% of those who say they have a Biblical worldview reject the Bible's definition of morality. It is no wonder that we are a nation in decline. Two articles I wrote, “What Once Was Bad, is now Good” and “Reflections from a 70-year-old Biblical Christian” put this into perspective.

Dennis Hall and his guest, Justin Bohner, Assistant Pastor, First Baptist Church, Highlands, NC discuss the fact that almost 90% of the adults in America are concerned about the state of moral values in the nation. Two-thirds of all American adults see morality as a matter of cultural consensus, meaning every culture must determine acceptable morality for its people. In spite of this, almost 60% believe the Bible provides the absolute moral truths which are the same for all people, in all situations, without exception. David Kinnaman, President of Barna Research, believesthat moral code that can be called "the morality of self-fulfillment" has all but replaced Christianity as the culture's norm. With this backdrop, the discussion focuses on the scriptural teaching in 1 John 2:15-16, "Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. For everything in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the Hepride of life – comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. " The concerns of listeners who do not feel much love for God or feel that their love for God has grown weak and cool is discussed in the closing moments of this podcast. Barna Research found that 85% of those who left church did so because they felt that church people are hypocrites. That'a a big problem! Are you guilty of hypocrisy? In this conversation, Pastors Philip and Eric discuss hypocrisy and how to avoid "virtue signaling" tendencies. Jesus hated hypocrisy too, calling out those who fake religiosity as "actors" who aren't living rightly before God. Essentially, hypocrites are doing all the right things for all the wrong reasons, and that breaks the heart of God. They also address questions that you submitted to the show: Is it ok to give or do something good when you don't intend for it to be kept fully secret? If you can do something in private and be OK without publicity, then you know that your heart is in the right place. (3:16) When is it ok to put your good works on display without "virtue signaling"? Always ask yourself, "who is getting the glory?" (10:52) How do you properly share your accomplishments and let your light shine before others? Assess your motivations. (13:14) How should we balance a self-promotion culture to "get ahead" with Jesus' teaching on hypocrisy? Awards and accolades are OK and can be celebrated, but don't confuse your performance and your identity in Christ. (17:43) How do you call out hypocrisy in another? Be careful to manage your own heart first before calling sin out in another.
