Dogman heads up Mark's review slate this week--an anarchic animation based on Captain Underpants creator Dav Pilkey's graphic novel series, where a lifesaving operation sees a police dog and his cop handler become one crime-busting half-canine hero. Plus, The Seed of the Sacred Fig—a courageous political drama about Iran's authoritarian government from exiled Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof. And last but not least, September 5--the tense newsroom drama starring Peter Sarsgaard, who is our guest this week... Peter sits down with Simon to discuss the Oscar-nominated drama, based on the true events of the 1972 Munich massacre, the first act of terrorism to be broadcast live on television. During the Munich Olympics of that year, the Palestinian militant group Black September infiltrated the athletes village, killing two Israeli athletes and taking nine more hostage. Taking place entirely within the newsroom, the film follows the efforts of the ABC sports broadcasting team, led by producer Roone Arledge (Sarsgaard), to cover the story as it unfolds in real time—and navigate the many practical and moral issues this entails. Sarsgaard tells Simon all about the unique production—plus working with his wife Maggie Gyllenhaal on The Bride!, and why he's given up correcting people when they think he's a Skarsgård. "Memory" had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where actor Peter Sarsgaard won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor for his performance in Michel Franco's latest film. Acting opposite Jessica Chastain, Sarsgaard convincingly plays a man with dementia in a surprisingly uplifting human drama and love story where light can be found in the sometimes darkest places. He was kind enough to spend a few moments of his time following the film's screening at the AFI Film Festival, talking with us about his performance in the film, working with Chastain, Franco, and more. Ketchup Entertainment will give the film an awards qualifying run on December 22nd before releasing it in more theaters on January 5th, 2024. It is eligible for your consideration in all categories, most notably in Best Supporting Actor for Sarsgaard. Please be sure to check out the film and enjoy this wonderful conversation. Thank you! The actor Peter Sarsgaard cannot be pinned down. He may be best-known for his portrayal of John Lotter in 1999’s Boy’s Don’t Cry. Or as Charles Lane in the 2003’s Shattered Glass. Or perhaps for his roles in films like Garden State (2004), Green Lantern (2011), and Jackie (2016). Or maybe as the CIA chief in the 2018 Hulu miniseries The Looming Tower. Or it could be for his stage work, on Broadway and Off-Broadway, in plays such as The Seagull, Kingdom of Earth, and Burn This. For good reason, the 48-year-old is among the most talented, versatile, and unassuming actors working today. In large part, Sarsgaard’s prolific career and success stems from the fact that, beyond the screen and the stage, he has thoughtfully cultivated a rich array of interests in things far outside of acting: Running. Mandolin playing. Gardening and horticulture. Writing. On this episode of Time Sensitive, he speaks with Andrew Zuckerman about how each of these outside engagements continues to feed his life while also helping fuel his acting.

Golden Globe nominated actor Peter Sarsgaard opened up to HFPA's journalist Gabriel Lerman about his two-decade career and what makes acting so powerful to him. They discuss researching with the CIA for his roles in The Looming Towers and Wormwood, being on West Broadway and Canal Street during 9/11, and his complete lack of interest in acting while in high school. He currently stars in “Loving Pablo” with Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem.
According to The New Yorker, the acclaimed director and all-around stand-up guy Woody Allen's 2013 film "Blue Jasmine" is yet another masterpiece in a long line of them. According to us, it is boring masturbatory fantasy from an out of touch ghoul who, in an ideal world, would have been locked up in prison for the past several decades rather than pumping out an endless stream of bombastic nonsense. Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for playing Jasmine Francis, a mentally damaged widow who we find out through a series of unnecessary flashbacks was married to a wealthy Madoff-inspired Ponzi scheme mastermind. Jasmine really doesn't have a character arc because she is clearly crazy to begin with, but fancy-pants critics would have you believe that the film depicts the subtle unraveling of a fragile soul with a cutting wit that's sharper than an 18th century French guillotine (or something similarly pretentious). Sally Hawkins was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for playing Ginger, Jasmine's adopted sister who is based on the character Stella Kowalski from Tennessee Williams's play "A Streetcar Named Desire." She is recently divorced from a meathead named Augie, played by Andrew Dice Clay, and is dating a new meathead named Chili, played by Bobby Cannavale, but Jasmine's insistence that she can do better drives her into the arms of a third loser, played by Louis C.K. (speaking of mastabratory fantasies). Alec Baldwin plays Hal Francis, a rich narcissist who, like Baldwin himself, seemingly sails through life doing and saying whatever he pleases. But the role does require some acting when Johnny Law finally catches up to him and he has to face the music for his lifetime of recklessness. Strap on your helmets (and your garbage bags) for a review of Zach Braff's zany but somber-seeming directorial debut, "Garden State." It's got everything you could ever want in a movie: paraplegics drowning in bathtubs, humping dogs, diplomas on ceilings and Sheldon from "The Big Bang Theory." Zach Braff plays Andrew "Large" Largeman, a twenty-something struggling actor who has been rendered emotionless after a lifetime of taking psychiatric medications following an incident where he shoved his mother and inadvertently paralyzed her from the waist down (that old chestnut). Large must return home for the first time in a decade when he finds out that his mom died. Once home, he goes cold turkey off his meds and starts staring into the infinite abyss known as life or something. Natalie Portman plays Samantha, a hamster-murdering former figure skater who claims to have epilepsy, but it's unclear if anything we learn about her is remotely true given that she's a pathological liar. Also, all of her physical and emotional problems seem to magically disappear as soon she falls in love with Zach Braff's equally damaged character. Peter Sarsgaard plays Mark, a pathetic gravedigger who still acts like he's in high school and lives at home with his mommy (played by Jean Smart). After Mark robs Large's mother's grave, we're supposed to forgive him because he takes us on a bizarre scavenger hunt involving shoplifting, visiting a hooker lair and bartering with some creepy weirdo who collects dead people's jewelry. Ian Holm (a.k.a. Bilbo Baggins) plays Dr. Gideon Largeman, Andrew's cold and creepy psychiatrist father who has no professional ethics and has been writing all sorts of prescriptions for his son for the past decade despite the fact that they have little to no contact. Join us as we discuss our difficulties at the gas pump, wonder if this movie's anti-pharmaceutical message is connected to Scientology and go back in time to prevent Keating's younger self from ever liking this movie. Tell us what you think by chatting with us (@filmsnuff) on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, or by shooting us an email over at mailbag@filmsnuff.com. This week on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, Rem, Ian and Jonathan dig deeper into "Robot & Frank" from 2012 and directed by Jake Shreier. The PositiveThis is a quintessential example of a movie holding up the mirror to society so we can learn more about ourselves. Exploring themes of Senior abandonment, the nature of friendship, and our relationship with Technology, Robot & Frank is a touching and laugh out loud story that is as enlightening as it is entertaining. The NegativeAside from a few nitpick things like music score choices and some minor character issues, It's hard to find much wrong with this movie. The VerdictRobot & Frank had a limited theatrical release, and that's a loss, because this movie deserves more. Haven't seen it, haven't heard of it? Watch it tonight and you'll thank us. Listener Feedback Josh AdamsThis was a touching, if not unspectacular little film. Langella gives a very solid performance in a 'square peg, round hole' type of role, and Sarandon is her usual graceful self. The ending, as somewhat morose as it may have been, was still artfully done. Sarsgaard was a solid choice for the robot's voice- not quite as smarmy as Moon's Kevin Spacey, and not simply rote like you might expect. I don't own this film, which is my usual benchmark for a full recommendation, but it certainly entertains. I see this becoming a film that people come back to once advances in AI come to the point where they help in the healthcare field. John SheehyGreat choice Nick JensenI thought this was a good movie and would have no problems recommending it to others. It's a good story with a little bit of future tech thrown in to make it really interesting. Not essential viewing, but a good watch. Shawn SmalldridgeThis movie is awesome! When I saw the trailer for it I knew right away that this movie was going to be right up my alley. Frank Langella does an amazing job bringing his character to life. The relationship that builds between Frank and the Robot is fantastically done. It's a gem of a movie that unfortunately got overlooked quite a bit. The effects are subdued but fit in perfectly with the vibe of this movie.
