Ralph welcomes Peter Beinart, to discuss his book Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza. An observant Jew, Beinart argues “We are not history's permanent virtuous victims. We are not hardwired to forever endure evil but never commit it.” Plus, premier global trade expert, Lori Wallach, joins to help sort out the on again, off again tariffs Donald Trump is assessing U.S. trade partners. What kind of a tool is a tariff? When should it be used? Who should it be used against? And are the current tariff threats on Canada really about stopping fentanyl?Peter Beinart is Professor of Journalism and Political Science at the Newmark School of Journalism at the City University of New York. He is also Editor-at-Large of Jewish Currents, an MSNBC political commentator, a frequent contributor to The New York Times, and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Foundation for Middle East Peace. His latest book is entitled “Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza” and his recent op-ed in the New York Times is “States Don't Have a Right To Exist. People Do.”We are not history's permanent virtuous victims. We are not hardwired to forever endure evil but never commit it. That false innocence, which pervades contemporary Jewish life, camouflages domination as self-defense. It exempts Jews from external judgment. It offers infinite license to fallible human beings.Excerpt from Being Jewish After The Destruction of Gaza by Peter BeinartIsrael can't destroy Hamas. Israel has totally laid waste to Gaza, and yet Hamas is still there. And Hamas will have new recruits from all of these people whose family members were killed by Israel. And Hamas will reconstitute its weapons, because I think actually a lot of the Hamas weapons now are coming from assembling Israeli weapons that were dropped on Gaza, just like the Viet Cong did in Vietnam. They reassemble to make their own weapons. So Hamas will still be there as a force for Israel to continue to fight. And I think Netanyahu will continue this war for as long as he can.Peter BeinartSo what I think Israel is trying to do, to various degrees of self-consciousness, is to try to reduce the population in Gaza and the West Bank. And that's why the Trump plan was so popular in Israel, not just among Netanyahu, but even among his centrist opponents, like Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid, who embraced the idea. Because for them, it solves the problem. Israel doesn't have a way of solving the Palestinian problem. So if you have fewer Palestinians, then they're less of a problem. This is, after all, how the United States solved its problem with Native Americans in the 19th century.Peter BeinartLori Wallach is a 30-year veteran of international and U.S. congressional trade battles starting with the 1990s fights over NAFTA and WTO where she founded the Global Trade Watch group at Public Citizen. She is now the director of the Rethink Trade program at American Economic Liberties Project and is also Senior Advisor to the Citizens Trade Campaign, the U.S. national trade justice coalition of unions and environmental, consumer, faith, family farm and other groups. He (Trump) also closed a thing called the de minimis loophole. That is this lunatic trade loophole that allows in uninspected (under $800 value) imports to every American every day… And then four days later, Trump met with the Federal Express CEO, who apparently was not happy because they deliver a bunch of those de minimis packages… This has become a superhighway for fentanyl… He (Trump) basically reversed the ability to stop fentanyl coming from China and to enforce his own China tariffs at the behest of the CEO of Federal Express.Lori WallachSo the difference between whether tariffs raise the consumer price has a lot to do with the same corporate price gouging that we've been seeing over the last couple of years. And we can see right now, for instance, on eggs. The actual supply of egg laying chickens and the actual supply of eggs is not a greatly reduced sector. That sector is now so concentrated at every level that the handful of companies can basically control the markup between what the farmers paid and what the consumer pays.Lori Wallach Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

#207 Management Review – The Fallacy Of The Annual Event

The ISO Show

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 12, 2025 26:41

If you've ever implemented an ISO Standard, then the term Management Review will be familiar to you.  It's a mandatory part of the implementation process, and a crucial tool for monitoring continual improvement. Somewhere down the line, it's become a bit of a myth that a Management Review needs to be an annual meeting. That is simply not the case, while required by the Standard, it's very flexible on how this could be achieved. In this episode Ian discusses the purpose of Management Review, including what you should be including and getting out of the review and breaks down the fallacy of the annual event. You'll learn ·      What is the purpose of a Management Review? ·      What are the common misconceptions about Management Review? ·      How Management Review supports other clause requirements ·      What are the inputs for Management Review? ·      What are the outputs of a Management Review?   Resources ·      Isologyhub ·      How to conduct a Management Review   In this episode, we talk about: [02:05] Episode Summary – Ian discusses the real purpose of Management Review, and dispels the myth of the annual event. [02:35] What is the purpose of a Management Review?: Management Review is a requirement of all ISO Standards. It's main purpose is to check if your Management System is fit for purpose, and what needs to be updated to ensure it aligns with your businesses objectives and strategic direction. In short, it's there as a check to see what's working well and what's not working well, in addition to continual improvement considerations. [03:30] What are some common misconceptions about Management Review?: Some common misconceptions include:- ·      That it's simply a formality – Rubber-stamping things and missing out on the opportunity to effectively monitor management system progress ·      That It must be once a year ·      Having to review everything in excruciating detail i.e. all audit findings ·      The need to update the risk assessment and re-jigging scores ·      That you must review and update your SWOT/PESTLE ·      Or review and update all management system documentation ·      That it's the perfect opportunity to re-write a policy There is a time and place for all of these, and you could tackle some of this in a Management Review if you really want to, but that is not the main purpose of a Management Review. [04:50] How Management Review supports other clause requirements - Leadership: If we take ISO 9001 as an example, the Leadership clause states: “Top management shall demonstrate leadership and commitment with respect to the quality management system by: a) taking accountability for the effectiveness of the quality management system e) ensuring that the resources needed for the quality management system are available g) ensuring that the quality management system achieves its intended results” These requirements at first glance may seem like they'd require a lot of effort and monitoring of many different factors, but in actuality they can all be satisfied through effective Management Review. [05:55] What involvement is required from top management? As stated in ISO Standards:- “Top management shall review the organization's management system, at planned intervals, to ensure its continuing suitability, adequacy, effectiveness and alignment with the strategic direction of the organization.” Top management also have involvement in the following elements of implementing and maintaining a management system: ·      Context ·      IPs ·      Risks/Ops ·      Objectives ·      Policy ·      Support ·      Operation ·      Performance monitoring Management Review relates specifically to ‘performance monitoring', but that in of itself will include elements of all the other clauses within the Standard, and many of those require top managements involvement on some level. [07:45] The fallacy of the annual event – The Management Review clause specifically states that a Management Review should be ‘carried out at planned intervals'. Many had interpreted that as once a year, which has been the prevailing myth for decades. Looking at the Standard, no where does it say ‘once a year', planned intervals means it could be once a month, it could be once a week, it could be a set points during the summer. When deciding on these planned intervals, take into consideration the nature of your business, the size of your business, the risks associated with it and the maturity of your Management System. This will determine how frequent the Management Review should be, as it will differ for every business. [09:10] Examples of Management Review frequency – Ian has worked in an organisation where they had a rather grand Management Review process, where top management and other relevant individuals meet to review the past year and set the scene for the following year. That same organisation also had monthly meetings with the same members of top management to keep on top of new and on-going issues. That isn't to say this is the only way to run Management Review. Some opt to have quarterly meetings, others once every 6 months and some even leave it to once a year. [10:40] What is required of Management Review? Inputs – Clause 9.3 details the requirements of Management Reivew in most Standards (some swap 9.3 and 9.2 around, but the contents remains the same). First, the inputs required for Management Review include: The status of actions from previous management reviews - If you said you were going to do something before, how's that going? Changes in external and internal issues that are relevant to the quality management system - this doesn't mean that every meeting should consider the SWOT/PESTLE/IP tables, but there must be some determination of when that's done in detail and when a senior mgt discussion should include the key aspects of that and its impact. There is a need to review these things when required anyway, so doing it only at pre-defined times can be problematic. Information on the performance and effectiveness of the quality management system, including tends in:- ·      Customer satisfaction and feedback from relevant interested parties; ·      The extent to which objectives have been met; ·      Process performance and conformity of products and services; ·      Nonconformities and corrective actions; ·      Monitoring and measurement results; ·      Audit results; ·      The performance of external providers; ·      The adequacy of resources; ·      The effectiveness of actions taken to address risks and opportunities; ·      Opportunities for improvement. [20:45] What is required of Management Review? Outputs – You will also have a number of outputs from Management Review, including:- Opportunities for Improvement – This could be as a result or reviewing audit findings and discussing the OFI's found and how you can address and implement these. You could also use the Management Review to review and set new objectives for the year ahead. Any need for changes to the management system – You may need to review policies and procedures and see if they're still fit for purpose, if they're not then this is a good venue to discuss and update them. Other aspects that may have changed or will have a need to change include: ·      Interested parties – have their needs and expectations changed? ·      People – Do you need to change the people involved with certain processes? ·      Awareness – Do you need to raise more awareness around a specific topic? Resource needs – You may need to raise the need for more resourcing in regard to the management system or related processes. My guest for Episode #259 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Michele DeFilippo, the Founder of 1106 Design, LLC, started in 2001 to work with authors to help them take advantage of opportunities in the changing industry of book publishing – providing one-stop publishing services from manuscript to market. Episode page with video, transcript, and more I've worked with Michele on my last two books, Measures of Success and The Mistakes That Make Us. In this episode, Michele shares her “favorite mistake” story. We also take a deeper look into a significant industry change, – the rise of independent publishing. They trace this journey to the late 90s and early 2000s when independent publishing emerged as a robust alternative to traditional publishing houses. Uncover the misunderstood beginnings of independent publishing and how it has been pivotal in empowering authors. From its initially misconceived do-it-yourself approach, independent publishing has evolved into a strategic model that allows authors to bring industry professionals together to create high-quality books. In this episode, dive deep with us to explore how this professional, comprehensive approach has shifted the industry's narrative from – “self-published” towards “independent publishers.” Unearth the numerous ways professionalism and strategic collaboration can create a book product that competes favorably at the market level and meets readers' demands. Questions and Topics: Starting 1106 Design?? Did you look more before you leaped? “Independent publishing” vs “self publishing”? People DO judge a book by the cover?? Changes publishers have to make for cover design for online purchasing?? Compare traditional publishing vs. hybrid vs. indy? What does an author need to ask?? What happens if that company goes out of business and disappeared?? Manuscript is done… but now what? What does it cost to produce a book to traditional publisher standards? Mistake to assume your book is going to be sold in physical bookstores? Print book vs. eBook?

People Do kampanyası ortaya çıkar.

December 21 marks the winter solstice -- the official first day of winter and the shortest day of the year with the least time between sunrise and sunset. In Alaska and other places far north, the lack of light is noticeable from both a physical and emotional perspective. But the darkness can bring lessons of light. In this episode Amy lays out what the solstice and its darkness has taught her. Listen now. Connect with this episode: Join the Humans Outside Challenge Follow Humans Outside on Instagram Follow Humans Outside on Facebook Some of the good stuff: [:45] Once upon a time, what is solstice? [1:15] What I learned about solstice after we moved to Alaska [1:50] 3 things solstice means to now [2:00] A reminder to fight [2:57] All light matters [3:40] The light of people [4:39] The real lesson of solstice Listen to this episode on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, or wherever you find your favorite podcasts. The following is an edited transcript of this episode of Humans Outside. I'm sure I had heard of the winter and summer solstices before I moved to Alaska in 2016. But it was like you hear about something in passing, or see it on a calendar. It meant nothing. Maybe “first day or winter” or “first day of summer,” which are marked by the solstices, meant something. I knew about those things. But here in Alaska that first day business seems like fake news. It's definitely been winter for awhile. And by the time summer solstice rolls around, we know a major chunk of what feels like summer is over. But until me moved here, solstice as an event, as the marking of how long the sun spends in the sky, as an emotional experience, as an physical event, as soul food for someone who loves to spend time outside -- well, I just didn't know about that. Today Solstice has meaning. And every winter that we spend here it gains more meaning and takes on more richness. It is a celebration of the actual light of the sun. It is a celebration of the importance of light in our lives. So I want to share with you three things that the physical darkness and the marking of solstice means to me right now --things that have been taught me by my connection spending time outside with the light and in the darkness of winter. Solstice, I've learned, is a reminder of the importance of fighting. Each December I start to feel a little sad and a little slow. At some point I find myself thinking that I'm just going to let it happen and be OK with it keeping me down. I start thinking that I don't really care that much about things I definitely care about but that take work -- my relationships, my fitness, succeeding at any given project I've worked hard on, even keeping this podcast going. And then at some point in there I realize that what is happening is the darkness is tricking me, once again. And instead I have to fight. I have to remember that the darkness is something to move through until I can find the light and optimism on the other side. And solstice is a reminder that the light does come, that it will come and that the world will start feeling so dark and heavy. There is light - hope, really - on the other side. The darkness has taught me that all light matters. In the deepest, darkest days there is only about 5.5 hours between sunrise and sunset here. But that is not all the light we see. Because before the sun has risen and after it has set, the ambient light lingers before the darkness really sets in. And that light matters. And the same is true about the light of hope, the light of friendships, the light of faith, the light of family and the light of community in these physically dark times. Each glimmer of love and light shines into the darkness, spreading its life like a beam. Just like every flicker from every headlamp on a dark trail is a noticeable signal, the light of hope shines into the dark. I don't think I'd ever appreciate that the way I do today without the lessons of winter and the solstice. And I've learned the true light of people and community during the months of dark. When they someone lights up the room, or that people are a light on a hill, or that someone's smile shines, they are talking about the physical manifestation of a spirit. And maybe those phrases have always simply been analogies to you. But I am here to tell you, coming in from the actual darkness of the north, that those things really are true. People DO carry light in those ways. And I know that because I've seen it and felt it. We often associate darkness with cold and light with warmth. And I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt, that the light these people around me, the people I've met through this podcast, you listening and the people I know here in my community IS a light of warmth. It holds me when the darkness is overpowering and pushes me to keep going when I want to stop and hide. Because here is the real, overarching lesson of solstice: we celebrate the light because we have grown to appreciate it through its absence. But without darkness to show us, we would never know that light existed at all. We would never understand its power. We would never value its existence. The darkness brings gratitude for the light, and solstice is a chance to celebrate and understand that experience. While you might live somewhere much less dark than where I am, I hope you have a chance to pause and feel gratitude for the light around you -- the physically light of the sun, the emotional light of friends and community and the strength you have inside you to fight and to endure. May you always find the light, my friends. You can see photos of me chasing light here in Alaska on Humans Outside on Facebook and Instagram. And please share your photos with me too. 8 Important Green Marketing Strategies for Eco-Friendly Ecommerce Brands The environment has been playing on everyone's mind lately. Activism around climate change and a surge of sustainable products has created a new shopping landscape packed full of purpose-driven initiatives and eco-friendly ventures. People want to save the planet. It's the only one we've got, after all (until we can populate Mars or maybe the moon, but that's a long way off). Consumers are keen to buy from brands that have the same beliefs as them and that are openly showing their hand when it comes to doing better for the world, its creatures, and its communities. Green marketing is both the act of creating environmentally friendly products and marketing them in a sustainable way. Not to be confused with greenwashing, where big-name brands pretend they're doing their bit for the planet but are actually using it as a front to build favor with shoppers. Green marketing can look like a number of things in action. It can look like an eco-friendly product, sustainable packaging, recyclable materials, purpose-driven business practices, or simply marketing messages focused on Doing Good Things. At its core, it's promoting sustainable products in sustainable ways from a sustainable business foundation. Green Marketing VS Greenwashing We hinted at greenwashing above, but let's dig a little deeper into what this increasingly common phrase actually means. We've all seen it in action: big brands loudly voicing their stance on the planet and throwing money at campaigns to prove they're acting in sustainable ways. But, unlike green marketing that actually promotes an eco-friendly product in an eco-friendly way, greenwashing is when a business spends more money and resources on marketing themselves as a sustainable brand than actually being a sustainable brand. This is by no means a new thing. Throwback to the 80s, when Chevron (an oil company, no less) commissioned a series of print ads to showcase its dedication to helping the environment. In reality, the brand's infamous “The People Do” campaign ran in tandem with them actively violating the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. Today, greenwashing is everywhere, from fast fashion brands like Uniqlo (whose cute fictional cat, Doraemon, wasn't quite cute enough to cover up the brand's impact on the planet), to major banks, furniture stores, food brands (we're looking at you Nestle), and everything in between. Enough about greenwashing, though. Here are some actual green marketing success stories. 5. Successful Green Marketing Examples in Action Outdoor clothing brand Patagonia prides itself on being the antithesis to fast fashion. Its Worn Wear initiative lets customers trade in their old, worn clothing to buy a new item or a pre-loved garment. The idea is that customers invest in their clothing to extend its life rather than throwing it away the moment it gets tired and holey. This isn't just a “look good” campaign. Every part of it has been created with sustainability in mind–the returned clothing is cleaned using CO2 technology to save water and energy. Everyone wants to make their home look good, and Shades of Green appreciates this–in a sustainable way. The brand's focus is on creating healthier living spaces decorated with non-toxic, eco-friendly products and providing educational content on green building products and practices. Phone cases are notoriously throwaway items. Pela noticed this and wanted to do something about it. Their products are made solely from sustainable materials as they strive for a waste-free future. As well as biodegradable iPhone and iPad cases, Pela sells eco-friendly watch straps, sunglasses, and accessories. On top of sustainable materials, the brand practices key green initiatives, like improving its manufacturing efficiencies and offsetting its carbon footprint through carbon credits. Ten Thousand Villages wanted to shine a spotlight on talented artisans from across the globe–many...

Can a membership model work for Podiatry? Dr. Tea Nguyen discusses why she left insurance, avoided an early career burnout and is now offering more MIS options and non-surgical treatment in a direct care practice. Dr. Tea Nguyen, DPM talks to Dr. Justin Trosclair, DC on A Doctor's Perspective Podcast Dr. Tea was first on the podcast episode 28 and we do a quick recap of what was going on 5 years ago and how things have changed since leaving that clinic, having a kid and going to a direct care - cash - membership model of podiatry offering unique minimally invasive procedures. Once becoming pregnant, she found herself having some peculiar experiences at her insurance based associate positioned job. We discuss those as well as growth, freedom and flexibility issues. She began to consider opening a solo clinic to accommodate her new to be mother role and the flexibility that would grant her. However, she quickly found out about all the hats one must wear as the clinic owner. Insurance Headaches and Burnout Dr. Tea freely discusses the horrors of the insurance pay model, how and why she was losing money hand over fist in 2019, and the pinnacle moments that made her really question to continue and face burnout or make the shift to cash pay and no insurance. She has a few versions of herself: v1, v2 and now v3.0. These range from a surgery and insurance focus, to minimally invasive procedures, to another clinic and starting a podcast to help more podiatrists (especially women) to become direct care membership model clinics. Starting a clinic during the pandemic was not easy nor was being overstaffed for a variety of reasons and she explains what she did during this time to pivot and develop professionally and clinically. Minimally Invasive Surgery MIS, minimally invasive surgery, has perks like less overhead, patients are happy to not stay in a hospital and when she really critically thought about it all, she was the only one offering these services - so why be at the mercy of insurance. Dr. Tea, DPM has a pretty simple formula for calculating her hourly rate and cost for procedures. It's not her place to judge how someone budgets their money. She puts her prices on her website for transparency reasons and it also helps people make a decision before even calling. With the insurance model you don't even get to shop around because it's usually some line like “we don't know exactly what your insurance will cover” and then you find out months later that you have a huge bill. Reasons to do Membership - Direct Care Model Poor insurance reimbursement, accompanied by heavy patient load can lead one to feel exploited and burnt out much quicker than you would anticipate. Nobody wants a Surprise After The Fact Bill without Freedom To Choose. People Do want, peace of mind and convenience and a direct care doctor provides both. What services would you offer if insurance would actually reimburse for them that would give superior clinical results? Between needing to be efficient and maximize patient visits and services, how do we do what's best for the patient but also allow us to not burn out or not even make a living? Is there anything else we can offer (shockwave, PRP etc) instead of surgery? Insurance patients aren't as attached to the doctor, as the doctor is attached to the patient. Virtual Assistants to answer phones and do tasks are talked about at the end of the interview. here a few of the direct care rules I have looked over https://www.dpcare.org/state-level-progress-and-issues https://www.dpcfrontier.com/states https://boomcloudapps.com/2016/08/25/house-membership-program-state-regulations links to its no secret and her podiatry legends interview https://www.tysonfranklin.com/news/podiatry-legends/10989-198-dr-tea-nguyen-direct-care https://adoctorsperspective.net/itsnosecret link to the podiatry series https://adoctorspective.net/podiatry

How do you juggle multiple social media channels and stay consistent AND authentic? Now this is a great question and one I was asked when someone joined my free Facebook group. So, it is time to answer. Now what this comes down to two of a few ways, repurposing and sticking to your values. To learn exactly how and what to do next, this is a must listen! This topic really interests me because I can understand, there are times we feel we post just for the sake of it. Because we are told to "show up daily". But I am here to tell you the secrets to doing both! What I want you to remember is, energy is everything. People DO know if your energy isn't in your content... I know it doesn't seem fair, but it shows. If you LOVED the episode, make sure you share this on your Instagram stories and tag us @contentqueenmariah! KEY EPISODE TAKEAWAYS

Really, Life?

Stuff happens in life, and usually when we least expect it. How we process it, is how well we will manage it. Plus, we don't know, what we don't know. We may handle something today totally different than we did yesterday. As we find our best selves and live our best lives, when life happens it may step on us but not crush us.Confrontation! OY! Yes, some people love it, some can do it easily, and for some of us it's a tremendous fear. For our own selves, if we need to do it - Just do it! Bust through that fear! Betrayal, trust and being held accountable - WOW major deep to the heart issues. What a great life if we live as someone that can be trusted, and having people we can trust. Covid. We hope you are managing with the back to normal life without fear. Being someone with social anxiety is was nice not seeing people as much or from the computer. Social anxiety is the worst! Here we are relearning self talk to getting back out there where we need to. People DO need people. Self talk into getting out instead sitting in the headspace of the fear. I hear ya though. :) AND you are not alone!Instagram reallylifepodcast Facebook Really, Life? I didn’t think of how small my building’s elevators were when I bought a sofa after moving into my current apartment. It didn’t fit. The deliverymen tried to bring it up the stairs too. They made the first landing, but couldn’t make the turn to go up the next flight. They had to take it back. I ended up paying a $300 restocking fee plus big tips for the deliverymen’s extra efforts. Plus I lost weeks with no sofa. Now I know my home’s limits. Living within them is no problem when I know them, only when I didn’t. A few minutes of measurement and geometry could have saved me that trouble and improved my life. Can homo sapiens’ elevator, also known as Earth, fit us all in? As with my sofa, maybe a bit of calculation is worth saving the trouble of finding out if our sofa can fit. We’re past the point of eyeballing it. Our sofa is civilization and billions of lives.I doubt even those who study sustainability most can answer Important questions likeCan fusion save us? Will it?What works between solar, wind, nuclear, geothermal, and other options? What doesn’t? Why not? What unintended side-effects are we missing?Do we risk losing civilization? If so, how great is the risk?If we take the gloves off, can geoengineering and other last-ditch efforts work? How hard will saving it be?What do we have to do to make it?These questions have answers, whether we find them out or not. There are a lot of books on the environment. I’ve read a lot of them. Most just describe our situation and what will happen if we don’t fix it. Some talk about what we can do, but they don’t help us understand. They don’t describe the patterns, just the results or instruction. We have to trust the writer. We’ve all heard to eat less meat. How much less? Will all the things they tell us to do solve the problems? How can I tell? What if I don’t eat less meat? Between eating meat or not, why can’t I see any difference in the world? Should I bother trying or just enjoy life to the max? We’re just told the problems and what to do. Maybe school should have taught us but it didn’t. After decades of poor science education, few teachers know how to teach science. They spout facts and instruction. Most analysis and activism is done without context or knowing nature’s patterns, based on feelings. Some envision a world of 10 billion thriving, others a collapse well before.Sustainability leadership is my life passion and frankly I don’t find most resources on the environment useful or readable. From the IPCC report Greta Thunberg gave to Congress to An Inconvenient Truth to articles suggesting “one little thing you can do for the environment,” they describe results and tell us what to do. They don’t help us understand beyond “coral reefs are bleaching” and oversimplifications like “CO2 acts like a blanket.” We have to take their word things like biodiversity is good and pollution is bad.Even knowing all the data doesn’t tell us the patterns. Will buying an electric vehicle matter? Does flying matter? How much? Enough to save lives? How can I tell, or do I have to take your word for it? Most of all, what about when they clash with other values? What if someone else says jobs or energy security is more important? Is there conflict? If so, how do we resolve it? What if we don’t want to emit greenhouse gases but our mother is sick, flying distance away? Or we feel our job depends on it? What about someone else saying the economy depends on my buying more stuff?Only knowing data but not patterns, we can’t think or decide for ourselves. We throw up our hands. For generations we’ve said we’d act and in fact we have, yet we keep lowering Earth’s capacity to sustain life and society. Could our ignorance be causing our attempts at solutions to augment the problems? Might our current attempts at solutions be exacerbating the problems. Are we on a road to hell paved with good intentions?A New HopeTom Murphy’s new book, Energy and Human Ambitions on a Finite Planet, changes all that. It empowers us to understand, think, and act for ourselves.Murphy earned his PhD at Caltech and teaches at UC San Diego. A decade ago he started the Do The Math blog, where he did more than answer the questions above. He showed how he found the answer so you can too, so you can think for yourself. I called it the best site on the internet (tied with Low Tech Magazine).Murphy’s sofa-doesn’t-fit-in-the-elevator moment came in 2006, shortly after moving to San Diego, considering the value of his home. He wrote:I pored over articles on the matter, and found two camps. One camp provided rafts of alarming quantitative analysis of the peril: sub-prime lending, soaring price-to-income ratios, unprecedented unaffordability by average families, vulnerability to any weakness in other sectors. The other camp said that the housing market was manifesting a new normal, that San Diego’s universal appeal would prevent a price drop, that scary lending practices were easily skirted by re-financing before interest payments ballooned. I chose to go with the quantitative analysis over the hand-wavy platitude-based set of beliefs, and am glad that I did.He sold at the height of the market. On seeing the success of applying quantitative analysis over hand-wavy platitude-based opinion to life, instead of moving to finance like many physicists, he applied it to the environment. He saw hand-wavy platitude-based beliefs and couldn’t stand it. He began applying physics to how we create energy, population, and so on in Do the Math.To the chagrin of his dedicated audience, since 2015, he posted only once. He told me on one of his appearances on my podcast that he had answered the most important questions so didn’t have more to write. But he wasn’t done. The blog was an unorganized string of posts. He taught a course to non-science undergraduates on the subject, called Energy and the Environment. He used the course to compile his posts, polish them, and make a self-contained comprehensive book. As far as I know, the only one like it, possibly because mathematics is the language of nature, so equations abound, but he explains them, so people who haven’t taken science or math classes since high school can follow.Showing the math means we don’t have to take his word for it. We can do the math too and think, judge, and act for ourselves. No matter our politics, age, industry, etc, we can access this book equally. The environment involves many branches of science, including physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, systems, and more, as well as fields including engineering, history, politics, philosophy, and more. Murphy brings them together like no other resource I’ve found. Many will shy away from devoting the time that the gravity of our environmental situation demands, but for enabling and empowering every reader to understand, think, judge, and act for themselves, I consider Energy and Human Ambitions on a Finite Planet the science book of the decade.I’ve read and watched a lot of books, videos, and articles. For reference, I consider Sustainability Without the Hot Air by Caltech-trained Cambridge physicist David MacKay the science book of the previous decade, and Limits to Growth: The 30-Year Update, the science book of the decade before that, by Donella Meadows, Dennis Meadows, and Jørgen Randers. (A video of David MacKay after his book led me to avoid flying, not as a burden but to increase my enjoyment of nature and connection to humans.) Read these three books, and you understand our environment. But wait, there’s more. Murphy has acted on his findings in his personal life. He didn’t just use an electric car or unplug appliances before doing so was cool, he measured his results and shared how doing so affected his relationships with his wife, peers, and students. He shares his life and profession. This book doesn’t teach raw information, it shares a lifestyle.I’m not saying the book is easy, only that I find it the most valuable book or resource on the most important area humans have faced as a species, and I’ve read and watched many.Murphy’s book is glorious. He writes about the wonder of nature, our genius in harnessing it, its limitations, and our folly at not measuring the sofa before trying to jam it into the elevator, or believing the self-serving interests suggesting a “new normal” without justification. The math is accessible to a non-science undergraduate. To someone with a PhD in physics like me, it is a symphony—pure joy when you understand it, even more when your study it. Beethoven didn’t write his Ninth for one hearing. Yo-Yo Ma has to study pieces and even with my PhD, I have to take time to understand its equations and application. I learn each time I read Murphy. You will too. The payoff is worth it for aesthetic pleasure alone. There are practical benefits to understanding the patterns: unlike Beethoven, the fates of civilization and millions of species, including our own, depend on our understanding and behavior.Learning math and physics here is like learning biology and chemistry when you start gardening or sports. You don’t need to start with anything. You won’t reach your potential, but you won’t get injured either. You’ll learn by doing. Any gardener will soon learn about species and seasons. Lifting weights taught me anatomy and diet. Sailing will teach you tides and fluid dynamics.Math doesn’t give answers. It doesn’t have values. People Do.Humans have values. What we consider good, bad, right, and wrong stands outside math and science. Euclid derived all of Euclidean geometry from five axioms but he had to start with them. Likewise, math lets you get from your values to what to do but it doesn’t tell you your values.Engineers often think math tells you answers. They promote nuclear power for not emitting CO2 or electric vehicles because they are more efficient, but do our deepest values include avoiding CO2 emissions and efficiency?Murphy describes how nuclear fission and fusion work, their hurdles to implementation, and so on, but then treats the science and technology as only the starting point to decide their value. Most analyses and people confronted with waste and pollution see more efficient sources and less polluting sources as the solution. Obviously, they pollute less, right? Not so fast. You have to do the math. What patterns have we followed before? If we follow them again, what will happen? People familiar with systems may expect systems to behave differently than their elements alone. Murphy does the math and suggests clean fission and fusion would compound our problems. Don’t believe him? You can do the math yourself, but if you just feel confident based on hopes, dreams, and fantasies, you’ll benefit most from his book. Most science books tell you results of experiment or predict some outcome based on some model. The IPCC reports, for example, tell you our best understanding of our climate measurements and where, given our patterns, we’ll end up or could end up if we change our behavior. The results show lots of numbers. They do math but they don’t enable you to do math. Books like the Uninhabitable Earth describe such predictions in prose, again not enabling you to do math.Who Should Read ItAfter generations of this nation denigrating science, math, nature, and education of them, I’m under no preconceptions of how popular this book will become. People feel guilty thinking and talking about the environment when their responsibility comes into play. Still, everyone can understand it. You’ll love it when you work through it.Every policymaker, CEO, and media programmer will benefit their audiences from knowing this book. Even if leaders don’t read it enough to understand it, this book enables them to have on staff or retainer someone who understands the math from doing it. That leader can choose not to talk in equations. He or she may even wave his or her hands and speak in platitudes, but can start from understanding, not ignorance. Why You’ll Love the MathI wrote how mathematics is the language of nature and that Murphy’s book is a symphony. The video below of a master class will illustrate what I mean (and put a big smile on your face, there are more of his videos here). Ben Zander is a conductor, musical director of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, and bestselling author. He speaks sometimes in English but other times through the piano. Because music is the language of music. Zander can’t communicate in English the sound and meaning of music where a few notes on the piano communicate everything.https://youtu.be/b2S-OjTb4nUAs music communicates music, equations describe nature. I know people more fluent in music will hear more than I do from Zander, but I love what I hear and value hearing what I can. You will gain as much reading Energy and Human Ambitions on a Finite Planet.Enjoy the book! Here is a video Tom and some peers made of the book:https://youtu.be/2fbOWhJy7So See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Solo Cleaning School
Presentation Starts with You

Solo Cleaning School

This message is short and sweet. I teach often and have created my own solo cleaning business niche of presentation cleaning and first impressions. That's what I do. Yes, I clean. But what I do is create peace of mind through presentation cleaning. What does that mean and why is it worth so much? I'm glad you asked. We are all emotional creatures and make our decisions as such. I've shared on previous podcasts that the busy mom doesn't have time to clean, yet dirt and clutter cause her stress and anxiety. My cleaning niche goes beyond basic cleaning and science. Check out the podcast, "Art Trumps Science". I add the art of first impressions to remove the stress and anxiety. This provides my clients with peace of mind. Similarly, I clean the first impression areas in offices to impress their clients, prospects, and staff every time they come into the office. This also has a value. What if a financial company loses a several million dollar client because their office "image" didn't match the website? My presentation cleaning investment can earn that client and easily pay for cleaning for the entire year! That's the point. Now that you understand that your cleaning itself can go beyond science, I want you to see that you have a part to play before you ever clean at all. You need to be congruent and have integrity. If you're a presentation cleaner, everything about your cleaning business MUST be presentation level. Just about every Saturday morning, my kids and I are cleaning out our totes and I'm constantly cleaning and disinfecting my vacuum cleaning and gear. At this point, my kids could answer WHY in a second. "Dad, you've told us that presentation starts with you and all the stuff we bring in here." I couldn't have said it better. I went on to explain to them and now to you. When you enter a home of office, you have to leave your equipment somewhere. What happens when you're vacuuming and the client sees your cleaning tote? Or, what if you're cleaning a bathroom and they see your rags or vacuum equipment. Would they be grossed out and wonder how you can clean anything if you can't keep your own gear clean? This is a wake-up call for many of you! That goes beyond your gear. What about your personal appearance? Do you look professional? Do you smell or have bad breath? Is your hair neat and clean. What about your vehicle? Is it clean and presentable. Is trash falling out when you open it? Would you be embarrassed if your clients saw the inside of your car?  Do you arrive with glaring music and flicking cigarette butts out the window? Do you ask where the client would like you to park? Is your social media presentable? People DO look at everything these days and every detail builds trust. You can't just presentation clean. You must be a person of presentation as presentation starts with you. If you take this advice to heart, you too can earn $100 per hour cleaning like I have in presentation cleaning.Go to the Solo Cleaning School  tab of website, access the free resources such as the "Solo Cleaning Quickstart Guide" and "How to Earn $100 Per Hour Cleaning Houses" Masterclass, and sign up for a free coaching call with Ken to ask your questions. Plus, you can access the ISO Model Course and more for $50 per month in the Solo Cleaning School Elite Membership.

Episode 28: Having Big Dreams in a Small Town

Small-Minded Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 9, 2021 33:57

Guys, the podcast is half of a year old. We've recorded over 25 episodes…like, how did this happen so quickly?   With that in mind and a recent email I received, I thought it was a good time to revisit our purpose here at the Small-Minded Podcast and Molly Knuth Media, and what we believe about life in small towns.   Our Manifesto You hear this message at the beginning of every episode:   At Small-Minded, we are flipping the script on what it means to be small-minded because we believe that being small is a good thing. Small steps lead to big impact. Small towns have a big heart. And small businesses play a big role in our modern way of life. Here at small-minded, we share stories and strategies to help small towns and small businesses flourish. Here's to a life well-lived being small-minded.   It's easy to say, but it's harder to live and embody. But that's why we repeat it. That's why we focus on it. That's why we have guests who can speak to this same mentality.   Being small-minded (in our sense of the phrase) is a good thing, because it reminds us why we choose to do life in these small communities. For many of us it's where the farm is. Where we grew up, or where we want to raise our kids. For others it's a way to have a direct impact on the community or to have lots of volunteer and outreach opportunities. For others it's safety and a slower pace of life.   While we know that (and though I don't believe media is the enemy), I do believe that small and rural are often portrayed in modern culture as “backwards” or primitive. Our towns are shown as places people land or get stuck. Full of stories of missed opportunities, rather than stories of folks who thoughtfully chose this place and this way of life.   But for all these portrayals, small towns are these stereotypes. People DO thoughtfully choose these rural, less-populated areas, and the data shows that.   In a recent study conducted by the moving company United Van Lines, states with the highest number of inbound residents are those that were largely rural: Idaho, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Arkansas, among others.    On the contrary, states with the highest number of outbound residents include New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Connecticut, and California, signaling a movement toward a more rural, less populated way of life for thousands of Americans.   So what does all this mean for you, reader, and for those of us here at the Small-Minded Podcast.    We need to live in a small-minded way that puts our small towns first. Thinking big for how to improve rural areas and provide that neighborly piece of Americana we crave. We want to admit our shortcomings and find ways to be welcoming and inclusive and modern, while also honoring the reasons that people love to live small.   That's what we do here.   Bonus: Recent Listener Email In a recent email, a listener asked me my thoughts on starting something new in her small town. After over a decade of working in her current business, she feels called to change direction and try something different. The possibility excites her, but in a small town she also has the very real fear of people talking about her decision and questions whether she'll have support.    So in today's episode of the podcast, I talk through making big choices and changes in a small town with the hope that my experiences can give you some guidance and encouragement.   Takeaways In short: do the damn thing. If it's on your heart and you can't quit thinking about it, there's a reason. You can dive right in, or you can make slow, steady progress. But even slow progress IS PROGRESS, right? You've got this, and if you've got big dreams while thinking small, you will be a blessing to your community for sure. Chris Schultz spent 15 years with the Starbucks management and leadership team before joining MOD Pizza, aka the MOD Squad in 2009.  Schultz helped MOD Pizza go from 1 location to 100 locations in 2016 as Senior Vice President of Operations. Today, Chris serves Voodoo Doughnut as their CEO. You can see, Chris Schultz has developed a track recording of helping great brands scale. That's what we're here to talk about today: When You Know You're Ready To Scale.  Show notes… Calls to ACTION!!! Subscribe to the Restaurant Unstoppable YouTube Channel Join the private Unstoppable Facebook Group Join the email list! (Scroll Down to get the Vendor List!) Favorite success quote or mantra: Be authentic. When You Know You're Ready To Scale:  Business Can you show a conservative growth period over the period: Month over Month: quarter over quarter Don't be fooled by being on Main and Main Location is a factor. Your brand must be great to help manage cannibalization People Do they understand the Mission?  Who are your culture carriers that can help lead and build the stores Pick front line people with whom you'd share a foxhole. have Confidence in leadership Embrace growth and opportunity without fear Culture Must have a solid culture to grow and employees want to grow-- "Growth mentality" Failure is not an option -- not just words on a wall, but a feeling you have "Growing big while staying small"  Infrastructure A realistic view of the brand - Is it actually scalable AND scalable *where* you want to scale? When to hire in for growth VS "stretch" for growth to make it work Failure can occur because of too much overhead or by burning out good employees.  Get utility players; they are vital to infrastructure-- find people who can wear different hats. Then empower them.  CEO's must be able to sacrifice their own opinions and play the role of the visionary. Having leadership you trust to make decisions based on your vision.  Why Growth?  Making money - nothing wrong with wanting to make more money; but, important to recognize the complexities that come with it.  Bringing the brand and experience to a larger consumer base.  Growth is not necessarily an indicator of success Incremental growth One to two is hard Two to five is harder and the hardest Five to 10 is impossible After 10 it gets easier  "Selling" Your Brand It's okay to strategically utilize for growth Why franchising works Brand based companies are different  licensing and Licensees Company Operated.  Are you Ready as a Leader?  Contact info: Chris@voodoodoughnut.com  425-372-6556 Thanks for listening! #009: I’m really pumped for this episode and super happy to have none other but Johnny FD on the show! If you don’t know, Johnny FD is one of the OG Digital Nomads who first blogged about his success traveling the world while selling stuff on the Internets. If you want to know his experiences and expertise in business, entrepreneurship, and having that financial/location independent lifestyle, it’s all on his blog! There’s a treasure trove of awesome stories and wisdom there on JohnnyFD.com. For this episode, we talk about the Asian male struggle, how hard it is to grow up in say America as an Asian minority, about having the right attitude to overcome our past victimhood mentality, taking practical steps to become better versions of ourselves, and becoming more comfortable in our own skin. We also talk about transcendence, bringing all the good things with you, leaving the bad stuff behind, and rising above our circumstances or situation by being the most we can be. Accepting all experiences in our past, good or bad, and becoming happy with ourselves. One of the biggest takeaways: "If you really truly want to make a difference, you have two ways: You can try to change other people, the world, the perception of Asian-Americans, or Asians, or whatever it is out there. OR: You can change yourself to be the best version of yourself and transcend all that.” "If you become the best version of YOU, the best 5’4” Jonathan Kim, the best 5’1” Stella, the best version of whoever you are, you become the most authentic genuine version of yourself, you get yourself in decent shape, you don’t have to be insane like the Rock, but just the best version of yourself, whatever that is -- that is more than good enough. People will see that, people will accept that, gravitate towards it. If they don’t, they’re not worth your time.” And it’s all about consistency! Just whatever it is what you wanna do, keep at it. No matter how many times I fall off this horse, and sometimes I fall harrdddd, I’ve set it in my mind that I’m getting back on this horse and I’mma ride harrddddd, till I can’t no more. I know this is true because while I’m far from perfect, I have been striving to improve myself in every important facet of my life for years. I am an example of this transformation, of this transcendence. Yo, if a BUM like me can do this, YOU can too. People DO see me, people do accept me for who I am, people gravitate towards me. It gets better and better as I become better and better. I want that for all of you, too. It’s totally mind-blowing how Johnny tells his story of being a lost, low-confidence loner to trailblazing into a GAWD of online business and travel, literally bringing entire communities of people to come hang out with him wherever he is in the world. More now than ever, with the power of the Internet, you can connect with likeminded people! You can find resources, books, literature, mentors, and communities of people out there to improve yourself. Are you a fan of Chick-Fil-A? Whether you love their food or not, we can all agree that as far as fast food goes, they have nailed their niche, customer interaction, company culture and guest experience. The result is them making almost double the revenue that a McDonalds makes per location, and are one of the largest family owned businesses in the United States. Here are my five biggest take aways from this Chicken-chain that apply to EVERY business. 1. Look for Opportunities 2. Create a Superior Customer Experience 3. Give the employees (and yourself) freedom to make choices that benefit the customer and business 4. Build Your Community and Get Involved 5. Businesses Don't Succeed or Fail, People Do. With about 2.5 billion active daily users, Facebook is the most used social media platform available today. If you have a business, it's likely that your customers are on Facebook. Starting off our social media series, this episode is all about Facebook and the many ways you can increase your online visibility there.  In this week's episode: Everything on Facebook begins with your personal account, also known as your "profile. "Friending" people strategically on Facebook allows you to be tagged and tag them in posts on Facebook, easily connect via Messenger and more.  Your business account on Facebook is referred to as your "page." Social media platforms are being abused and utilized as dating apps--do NOT do this! You can post whatever you want on Facebook as long as it doesn't violate the platform's terms of service, but I suggest that everything you post be "brand-friendly."  Your profile and page photos should be different. You can sell directly from your page and use any of the six available buttons to engage visitors, build your list and more (details in the episode). People DO read Facebook business page reviews. You should provide at least one way for people to contact you on your profile and page and all the information there should be up-to-date. You need a business page to run ads on Facebook. Facebook groups have several roles: creator, admin, moderator or member. I invite you to join my Business Fabulous Facebook group:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/bebusinessfabulous There are three different types of Facebook groups (details in the episode). I detail multiple ways that tagging someone in/out of groups can help increase your online visibility. Events, Watch Parties and Premiers are other ways to be found on Facebook.  This week's challenge: Go through your Facebook profile and page and make sure that you have current information as well as multiple ways for your followers to connect with you. Nearly 200 episodes in, we have seen plenty of our own transformations both at Virtual Not Distant and the 21st Century Work Life podcast - and today we explore how organisations are adapting and changing, as the digital landscape does the same. First, a quick follow up from previous episodes - we found this great article about one of our frequently-used collaboration hubs, so make sure you check this out: 30 incredibly useful things you didn’t know Slack could do. And Pilar has been tweeting a lot lately, which was how she connected with today’s guest Euan Semple via his book Organisations Don’t Tweet, People Do. Within this book she found many resonant quotes, including “where possible sharing as much as you can when you are able to do so means that people are more likely to respect you when you say you cannot share some information,” and “Blogging can help people to understand themselves and their work better and by doing so help them to change at a profound and fundamental level” - these words were written in 2013, but resonate so well with our visible teamwork approach in 2019! Do look out for our anniversary episode up next, where we celebrate 200 podcast episode by exploring celebrations in remote teams! And look out for a special offer just for our listeners then. 09.55 21st Century Work Life: Euan Semple, author and speaker on the impact of technology at work Euan has been blogging for 18 years, and shares his words on LinkedIn, Facebook and Medium. He started blogging as a ‘memo to himself’ about the impact of technology at work, but found it resonating with a wider audience. Back in the day you had to know how to use Moveable Type in order to blog, but much has changed in the blogging world, and Euan’s career has spanned most platforms in this fast-moving landscape’s history! He now writes and speaks globally on the impact of digital transformation in the workplace. As Euan says, "It's easier to digitise our dysfunctions than to deal with them." Sometimes we need to fix things at a more fundamental level, before trying to find the right app and fix the tech, and you can’t simply leave it to the IT department to sort out organisational issues.  Consumer technology preferences are very personal but organisations make broader choices, and Euan talks about ‘shadow IT’ and how fragmented the work IT landscape has become, with individuals and teams going around official procedures to get things done, and the unforeseen consequences of change. Many users too are struggling to keep up, it’s not generational, it’s about individual transformation and development, and lots of organisations don’t help people enough - then limit the extent to which they can take initiative for themselves.  Euan’s work at the BBC has exposed him to a wide range of platforms and apps and the way they are marketed and implemented, and finds it unsurprising that people sometimes buy overpriced and over-engineered systems and then try to fit the organisation to the platform instead of the other way around. An ecosystem approach empowers the user and the organisation, putting the tech in its proper place - and we usually get this right more often in personal tech than at work, where we don’t like to question the way things are done. Hierarchies are inevitable in organisations, but decentralisation is an important trend, and designing that ecosystem requires input from those actually using it, a group which may be forever in flux anyway. Euan likes the phrase ‘an ephemeral meritocracy’ - power and influence in organisations should be relevant and timely, rather than acquired for all time. Changemakers can come from anywhere, and any level. Embracing the advantages of remote work and digital collaboration can also be overlooked, such as the effectiveness of online communication in overcoming introversion and social anxiety. The online conversation can become very polarised, but, it can also be enlightening and amazing, representing the very best of human nature. And we’re all fully rounded human beings with more to us than our online personas… which is why Euan also drives trucks as a sideline (while listening to podcasts and generating creative ideas of course) - giving him a different perspective on roles and authority and collaboration for sure. Ever an optimist, Euan likes to leave people with a sense of infinite possibility - there are opportunities everywhere, so grasp them while we can!  So do connect with euansemple.com, @euan on twitter (a handle that length is proof of an early adopter!)   42.49 What do you mean by that? Ethical Walls We spoke to Justin Morris, global strategy director of Modality Systems, to explain this idea: Sometimes in business there can be conflicts of interest when two parts of an organisation talk to one another, and this might apply particularly in highly regulated industries. This might have been managed physically in the past - such as by keycard access. Now this phenomenon is mirrored in the online workspace in Microsoft Teams, where information barriers called ‘ethical walls’ can be inserted, to stop specific teams and individuals communicating with each other. Pilar’s initial reaction to this update was instinctively negative - what about trust, integrity..? However as Justin points out in this conversation, there are very real compliance needs in many circumstances, to avoid possibilities of breaches like insider trading or client confidentiality, and organisations have to be able to demonstrate they have addressed the problem structurally to the best of reasonable ability.  The flatter hierarchies that Euan talked about above can over-facilitate conversations which are not appropriate to specific kinds of highly regulated work. Creating a trustless environment actually protects the individuals as well, both from temptation and easy accusations - while such barriers can presumably be circumvented, this would have to be deliberate and overt. Look out for a bonus episode with Justin shortly for more on this subject, and meanwhile you can connect with him on Twitter and LinkedIn, and his website Digitalteamwork.tv   49.33 Wellbeing: Beyond work-life balance Knowledge workers have so many tools and devices, it can be difficult to disconnect and unplug. It was easier when we could leave it all behind in the office, as we did a generation ago. But do we feed that always-on mentality, and risk becoming addicted to our continual conversation with and about work? Does it make us feel valued and connected? How easy do you find it to avoid checking your phone in the evenings or at the weekend? Are you the master of your alerts - or is it the other way around? Everyone finds their own preferred balance, but you need to decide for yourself and be intentional about it, instead of letting default notification settings or the expectations of collaborators dictate what you are thinking about and dealing with in your own time? We need to talk about how we feel as well as what we think, and be conscious about our boundaries. Living The Good Life Naturally https://www.learntruehealth.com/living-the-good-life-naturally I am very excited to welcome back to the show, Kristen Bowen, the founder of Living The Good Life Naturally and my favorite Magnesium Soak! I am a huge fan of this magnesium soak. I’ve been experimenting with different forms of magnesium supplementation for eight years, and this one has been the most effective by far for helping me achieve full cell saturation levels of magnesium. In this interview, I go into more detail and share my experience with using Kristen Bowen’s Living The Good Life Naturally Magnesium Soak. We first had Kristen on Learn True Health in Episode 294: Magnesium Foot Soak. Sleep Through The Night I’ve been using Living The Good Life Naturally Magnesium Soak since last summer with my husband and our 3-year-old son. Before this soak, it would take us up to 2 hours each night to get our son to sleep! Even with taking liquid magnesium as a supplement approved by his Naturopathic Pediatrician he was still always wound up! The very first night he did his regular bath with a 1/8 cup of Kristen’s Living The Good Life Naturally Magnesium Soak in his bath he ASKED us to put him to bed without reading his regular five books because he was ready to sleep!!! Ever since then we have regularly added this concentrated magnesium to his nighttime baths, and he has stopped fighting us at bedtime. He falls asleep quickly and stays asleep through the night. Plus he is calmer during the day! And that is just his results! My husband and I have also noticed fantastic results of our own. There is a Facebook post in our podcast’s Facebook group with 175 comments of people in the community sharing how great this has been for their health and the health of their family. One community member made a video sharing how this magnesium soak has stopped her life-long migraines! Several others have shared that it has helped them finally get better sleep, stop restless legs, aid them in more energy and fewer or no feelings of stress in their day. Our body needs magnesium for over 1,800 cellular processes, Dr. Carolyn Dean shared in Episode 227: Curing Diseases with Magnesium. Magnesium is the most important mineral for health and the one we are chronically low in all of the time! Lab Test For Magnesium Levels If you are not sure that you have a magnesium deficiency, you can get a $50 blood test called the RBC Mag test. You can get it from walkinlab.com if you are in the US. You want your number to be between 6 and 7.2. Most people are below 5, which means they are chronically deficient. When you are deficient in magnesium, it affects hormones, immune health, soft tissue health, stress, sleep, the brain! The list goes on and on. Every system of the body requires magnesium, and every system begins to breakdown without it. That is why this magnesium soak is so effective. As you can tell, I have become a big cheerleader of Kristen Bowen’s Living The Good Life Naturally Magnesium Soak. I was very skeptical at the beginning. I am open-minded enough to give something new a try, and I will let the results speak for themselves. And they did! Near the beginning of our interview Kristen shares that for the next two weeks Learn True Health listeners will get a free jar of her 100% natural Magnesium Muscle Cream plus the regular 10% off that LTH listeners normally get by using the coupon code LTH. What Saved Kristen’s Life This interview was quite a rollercoaster ride of life-changing health information! In our first interview, Kristen shared her story. At her lowest point, Kristen was 70lbs, in a wheelchair and having 30 seizures a day with her hair falling out in handfuls and brain fog so bad she could barely talk. She tried everything to regain her health. It wasn’t until she discovered this pure, concentrated magnesium from the Zechstein Sea that she began to gain her health back! Kristen came to discover that with this specific type of naturally occurring magnesium we absorb 20 GRAMS of bio-available magnesium in a one hour bath with this magnesium soak! This is the most effective way to get magnesium into your body for relaxation, pain relief, sleep, and anxiety! For her, within weeks of using the soak, it helped end her seizures, combat her autoimmune disease and restore her health to the point where she could walk, talk and think again! She said it was like a light bulb went on inside her. She had been so minerally deficient for so many years that the magnesium she was soaking in filled her like a car engine on empty gulping in gallons of fuel at the gas station. How To Achieve Low Maintenance Health In our interview, Kristen brings up an interesting point. Looking at her life, some might think she has to do a lot of things each day to keep on top of her health. These small, daily rituals have built a strong foundation of wellness that allows her to thrive. Her investment into supplements, clean foods, online workshops, holistic medical devices like saunas, herbs, lotions, treatments like massage and acupuncture all have been part of building this foundation. And now, over 12 years after Kristen was able to liberate herself from the frailty of illness the MDs said she would never recover from, she has built a foundation of health so strong that she refers to her health as “low maintenance.” She shares that the years of hard work do pay off. It takes the right mindset, lifestyle, and food choices to have low maintenance health. Importance Of Boron For Our Health Many of our listeners reached out to Kristen after our first interview with a barrage of wonderful questions. The most common one was, “After I reach cell saturation, how can I maintain and hold onto my magnesium better? “Kristen shares that many other deficiencies and conditions can “burn through” our magnesium stores quickly, like a boat with a leak, leading to perpetual mineral deficiency. “If you use the magnesium soak daily and are unable to reach full cell saturation after 30 days, we have a crack in the foundation. I did not rebuild my health by chasing symptoms. But rather I built a strong foundation. Adding boron helps you hold on to that magnesium. It’s like a booster pack for the magnesium,” said Kristen Bowen. Kristen Bowen says boron helps you hold magnesium in your cells. If you’re experiencing the benefits of magnesium, but you have to soak all the time, you may have a boron deficiency. “Boron gives the cell wall flexibility. And the cell wall is like your brain. It’s what communicates the information in your body. If you don’t have enough boron, you are stopping the communication at the cellular level,” Kristen Bowen explains. She adds, “Boron can also help bring the inflammation markers down and help regulate the inflammation in your body which is attached to your pain level. It also helps your pancreas balance blood sugars.” In different areas of the world where there is naturally occurring boron, Kristen Bowen reveals that cancer cases are lower proving the importance of this trace mineral in preventing disease. “Boron works through the parathyroid and helps re-mineralize the bones. But a lot of women will have hormone problems when they add boron,” said Kristen Bowen. “The missing component is cortisol. It is stress. I call it the magnesium mindset.” Recognizing Our Power Kristen Bowen believes we have to recognize how powerful we are. Many of us are “addicted” to our stress and use cortisol to get us through the day. When we produce excess cortisol, it is giving us a short-term fix. It gives us a little bit of energy and clears our head in the short term. “But one of the long-term consequences of living off of our stress hormones is that it robs us of the building blocks that our body uses to make progesterone and estrogen,” said Kristen Bowen. She adds, “If we have some cortisol issues, we need to be a little slower adding boron until we have soaked in magnesium long enough. Because that will help you get on top of the cortisol issues so when you do add that boron, you’re not having issues with your hormones as well.” Maximizing Boron Kristen gets her boron from the all-natural, 100% boron, cleaning agent “20 Mule Team Borax”, Kristen Bowen recommends taking about one liter of water and mixing it with a rounded teaspoon, shake and let it dissolve before taking it. “One teaspoon equals three milligrams of boron approximately. So, I take anywhere from 18 to 24 milligrams a day. But if you chose to take your boron this way, make sure you buy the one that is without the fragrance and 100% all natural. That is why I use 20 MuleTeam Borax, which is 100% boron, the same quality they put in supplements for a fraction of the cost,” said Kristen Bowen. She adds, “Because there are some places in the world where the 20 Mule Team Borax has fragrance added. That’s not appropriate to ingest. Best thing to do is take the 30-day challenge where you get to full cell-saturation of magnesium before you add the boron.” Kristen says you can also get boron from foods like raisins, almonds, dried apricots, and chia seeds, as long as those foods were grown in boron-rich soil. If you take time to gel chia seeds, it creates a polysaccharide and helps mops up excess cortisol in the body. It is also a food source of B vitamins which is crucial to holding magnesium in the cell. PCOS If you have PCOS, Kristen Bowen suggests not to take boron first because it’s just going to aggravate the problem. Instead, you have to do more to support decreasing cortisol and improving magnesium levels. And that’s where chia seeds come in to play. When chia seeds are properly soaked, it will help mop up some of that excess cortisol, and the polysaccharides help as well. So, when your body is ready to handle boron, it’s not going to throw you into converting testosterone at a faster pace. Candida According to Kristen Bowen, every time we have that cortisol spike, it strengthens the biofilm that coats the lining of the gut and harbors harmful candida. The stronger the biofilm is, the harder it is to break the candida down and rid ourselves of unwanted parasites. “Magnesium is good at helping the body to clean out the candida-rich toxic biofilm. If you have had extra cortisol and a candida issue, the magnesium breaks down the biofilm,” Kristen Bowen said. Vitamin C It’s also essential to understand vitamin C dosing. No one can tell you how much you need. It’s different for everybody because the strength of your adrenals determines it. Kristen shares that you can only hold as much vitamin C as your adrenals are strong. The stronger your adrenals, the better your body can utilize vitamin C. When we are under toxic-stress our body burns through our vitamins and minerals faster, leading to deficiency and furthermore, illness. Most people believe that the RDA on the vitamin bottle is the maximum dose we should ever take of vitamins C. However, it is the MINIMUM required amount of vitamin C to barely stave off disease. If you want to be barely diseased than only take the daily RDA amount, we want TRUE HEALTH; so we are going to take more vitamin C than the minimin RDA of 50mg! Dr. Mathius Rath studied under the famous Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling, and after his death continued his research on the importance of vitamin C and amino acid proteins. Dr. Rath has several free ebooks available including one called Why Animals Don’t Get Heart Attacks, and People Do where he outlines fascinating discoveries on how vitamin C works at preventing and reversing cardiovascular disease. An interesting fact that he points out about animals is most of them produce their own vitamin C, much like we produce our own vitamin D internally. A goat will have about 16 grams of vitamin C coursing through its bloodstream at any given time while a wolf will have 32 grams. If a human adult is twice or three times the size and weight of a wolf, how many grams of vitamin C do you think we require for optimal health and healing? The US Government says only 50 mg, while researches like Dr. Mathius Rath and Linus Pauling say we need many grams of vitamin C each day. If we are not getting it from eating a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, then we need to consider supplementing our vitamin C from a whole foods source. Acerola Cherry Powder for Vitamin C Kristen Bowen experienced a miraculous recovery in her gut health when she added Acerola Cherry Powder to her protocol. Acerola Cherries are naturally high in vitamin C, and when made into a powder it becomes a potent vitamin C supplement that is bioavailable and easily absorbed and utilized by the body. You can buy her Acerola Cherry Powder from her site  LivingTheGoodLifeNaturally.com and be sure to use the coupon code LTH for 10% off. Kristen Bowen’s favorite way to take Acerola Cherry Powder is mixing a drink that has some coconut water, grapefruit juice, and good green algae. My favorite algae is from EnergyBits.com. Be sure to use coupon code LTH for 20% off! Toxic Stress The abuse Kristen Bowen went through as a young girl set the stage for high cortisol levels later in life. A groundbreaking study conducted in 1995 by the Centers for Disease Control and the Kaiser Permanente health care organization in California looked at the relationship between Adverse Childhood Experiences and overall outcomes in life. They found that the more ACEs we experience will set the stage for what has been now coined as “toxic stress” later in life. Toxic stress is when the body is overreacting to everyday occurrences as if they are threats. A door slams, a car alarm goes off, someone yells, these sounds are enough to set off the fight or flight response in the body. For someone who went through Adverse Childhood Experiences, those sounds feel like dangerous threats and spiral their body into extreme stress. All day long they are overstimulated by little sounds or sights their body perceives as threats. If you know you had ACEs as a child, it is imperative that you take action now to lower and manage your stress; otherwise, this study concluded that you have a greater the chance of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, depression, substance abuse, smoking, poor academic achievement, and early death. The good news is there are many things you can do to be proactive to mitigate the effects that ACEs have on your stress levels, including soaking in magnesium! It was fun to hear Kristen share that as women, as the matriarch, as the mom and wife, we set the tone for digestion at the table. It is set by the female who sits at the table. Our mood affects digestion for everyone dining with us! If we are in a state of relaxation and joy, everyone can relax and digest and absorb the nutrients in their food. If we bring our stress to the table, or worse, all eat in front of the TV, we are setting up our body and the health of our family to fail. We cannot properly digest and absorb the nutrients in our food when under a state of stress. “To create low maintenance health, we have to take into account and claim how powerful we are. For me it was a real mindset shift in helping to re-wire my brain,” said Kristen Bowen. Parasites Remember how I said this interview was a roller coaster of health information? Well, the biggest plot twist was when Kristen shared about her experience with expelling parasites from her body. At some point in her recovery, Kristen realized she had hit a wall. All of her symptoms pointed towards parasites. For over a year Kristen Bowen performed expensive parasites cleanses with little results. Eventually, she stopped taking the abrasive herbs designed to kill the worms, amoebas, and flukes she felt was causing her symptoms and instead turned to study further about the gut’s biofilm and what she could do to support her body in making her gut an inhospitable hotel for those unwanted pests. That is when she discovered the before mentioned Acerola Cherry Powder, and it’s benefits to help aid her in making the parasites leave her body. After adding the Acerola Cherry Powder to her daily protocol, along with soaking in her magnesium and taking boron, she began to expell parasites from her body! However, each month they would return only to be expelled again. She did her research and found out that when we have low stomach acid the parasites can reproduce each month and continue to thrive. Kristen tried taking HCl supplements, but they did not agree with her. Instead, she looked to natural ways to stimulate and support her stomach to make healthy acid. She found that drinking fresh celery juice did the trick! “I use 16 ounces of celery juice on an empty stomach every morning,” said Kristen Bowen. Parasite Release Kristen Bowen believes that on the subject of a parasite release, it’s not just about checking off a list and making sure you got all the supplements. You must put that mindset and be willing to take your power back. “Because your energy goes up, your ability to communicate goes up; your ability to follow through with ideas fills up. We have to be willing to increase our accountability,” said Kristen Bowen. When Kristen Bowen experienced that parasite release and was able to figure out the need to build hydrochloric acid, walking away from the constant reproduction cycle happening, that’s when Kristen Bowen achieved low maintenance health. “We are the CEO of our health and body! We don’t just lift ourselves. It is our gift. Our feminine gift is to lift others around us. Tapping back into that power is crucial,” said Kristen Bowen. And for every jug of magnesium soak, Kristen Bowen includes a free jar of magnesium muscle cream for a limited time. To those who have suggested that the magnesium soak be available in a powder or flake form, Kristen Bowen says the effectivity will be compromised. “The purity, quality of the product and ability to get cell saturation is crucial. And flakes do not meet my standard. I would never sell anything that I’m not willing to use myself,” said Kristen Bowen. However, Kristen Bowen says you can’t get the full cell saturation with the cream, but people do see more localized results. It cannot replace soaking, but it’s a beautiful spot treatment to relax muscles and decrease pain and inflammation. Margy is saving kittens on the highway and Jess is back from a very zen vacay! This episode features an interview with our favorite promo products guy, Phil Brakefield! Jess has used a bunch of promo products companies, and they pretty much all sucked. Some were wicked expensive, others made horrible mistakes and other sites were just confusing to navigate. Phil is a super nice guy and you can just email and tell him what you want. He gets it for you at a reasonable price, and he also knows a lot about what kinds of products get more traction in different markets.   1. Do people ever get stemless wine glasses? Can I have four? ● People DO get wine glasses- there are over 1 million items available! ● You can’t get 4 because promo products are based on quantity, so just 4 would be very expensive ● Better off doing “print on demand” for something like that   2. What types of swag are the most popular? ● Standards in the industry that are always effective are: mugs, totes and pens ● Cell phone chargers and screen cleaners are very popular now ● SO many hats ● Sometimes you will be surprised by what is and isn’t popular   3. Why should I have swag for my business? ● DONE CORRECTLY, it’s an important part of your branding/messaging mix ● You have to use the correct swag for your target audience (e.g. AARP crowd may not want phone chargers) ● 70% of people you give a calendar to plan to do business with your company within the next year ● Gain exposure through a useful, attractive and fun product   4. Do we have the cutest logo of any of your clients? ● YES! ● Good idea to minimize your logo and use a fun phrase instead (like #rockthepodcast!)   5. Why does orange look like sh*tty soda? ● All manufacturers have at least one item that just doesn’t look great ● Colors can come out badly on products if you’re not careful ● Some shades of orange look sh*tty   6. How often do your clients tell you that their swag resembles a sex toy? ● Only with Jess (LOL it was supposed to be a microphone)   7. What are the cheapest promo products that have the highest perceived value? ● It depends on what the nature of your show/business is ● Phil advises people to let him help them hone in on their message and their target audience ● Then they give Phil their budget and he comes up with the best product ● The key is NOT to go for the cheapest, but understand what is the most money you can comfortably spend reaching your IDEAL client ● Things that always work like pens and mugs may not fit the profile of your podcast ● Think about message first and reverse engineer from there   8. Is it worth it to sell your own swag? ● If you want to do that, you should go through the pain of becoming a promo products distributor, which allows you to buy things at a lower price ● Beware: it’s an involved process to become a distributor ● If you have a really fun product that’s popular, you may be able to make a profit selling it ● Can do a Shopify store and automate it   Resources Mentioned: When Things Fall Apart Pema Chodron The Power of Now Eckhart Tolle Cafe Press DreamBusinessAcademy.com Phil@unisourceadvantageclub.com HeyBrakes@gmail.com Shopify.com Guestexpert@interviewconnections.com @InterviewConnections

Your Listening to the Street Smart Wealth Podcast, show 101   Sometimes new people can struggle with how to explain what network marketing is, or whether it is really a legitimate business model.   On today’s show, I want to share some thoughts on how Network Marketing stacks up to Real Estate and Franchising and give you some language you can use that just plain makes sense.   Welcome to the show!    I’m doing a special series of webinars this week, Mindshift to Millions, how to get UNSTUCK in Your Direct Sales Business.   Get registered - http://JackieUlmer.com/mindshift   Even if you can’t make it, you need to be registered to get the replay link!   We’ll cover some ideas on how to explain network marketing and even address the pyramid issue.   IF you want even more coaching and insights on how to become a true Network Marketing professional, earning that gangster income, consider joining my coaching community! We cover everything A-Z on Network Marketing and A-Z on Social Media, and how to set up an online marketing system so YOU become the hunted and not the hunter! In other words, people come to YOU, pre-sold on network marketing and pre-sold on a business. Learn more -   JackieUlmer.com/coach   Franchises, Real Estate and Network Marketing similarities   I have had a lot of team partners ask me - how do I explain what we do? What network marketing IS?   Good question because sometimes people really don’t get it, or they’ve had a negative experience or heard someone mention - pyramid.   I’ll share more about pyramids in a minute.   When my husband and I were researching ways to diversity our income, outside of the airline industry and something I could do while still being a full tine mom, we seriously considered franchising . It sure look like an option that might provide what we were looking for in terms of securing our retirement and finances. Since I was extremely skeptical about Network Marketing, and still came into it somewhat kicking and screaming, we were not even SORT OF open to looking at it as a serious option or career profession.  Keep this in mind when someone tells you no! People DO change! As part of our research, we toured the country and visited 3 different franchise headquarters. A few things were always a deterrent to actually jumping in – 1. Start Up costs - it takes a LOT of money, and they are very upfront about the amount of time before you see a return on investment 2. Additional money needed to sustain while in growth mode 3. Time requirement, given that we had not yet started a family As time went by, and we started our family, we became educated and open to the idea of Network Marketing and jumped in with both feet, never looking back! Now, it’s been over 20 years since we’ve had a successful network marketing business and I am so grateful for what I have learned and the income I have made. And, I do like the share the comparison of Network Marketing and franchising. Both have a parent company that provides support, training and essentially a “licensing right” to use their name. With both, it offers a turn key system and if you will just FOLLOW the system, you can’t fail. Even with network marketing. Whenever I am talking to someone interested in my business and they tell me how they have “tried” other network marketing businesses without success, I ask deeper questions, and most specifically want to get to exactly what action steps they have taken. Usually, they have talked to less than 6 people before they quit and yet I hear “Everyone I talked to was not interested. “ Here is what I know - the first 6 people I talked to weren’t interested either. I just kept going. I’m not going to hang the hat of my success on just 6 other people, who have things going on in their lives and between their ears that make them not right for my business! This alone is one of the most powerful things about network marketing and Robert Kiyosaki outlines it in his book - The Business For People Who Like Helping People - in the show notes. He says - Network Marketing is a great business model to teach people the business skills they need to be successful. We recently stopped in a coffee shop in Orange County and I noticed a brochure promoting the franchising opportunity associated with the store so I picked it up.  As we read over it, we had to laugh at what was required, vs what has been required of us to build a network marketing business to a level that essentially offers much more in terms of both income and free time. Here is what the brochure listed, with my network marketing comparisons listed in parenthesis – Own Your Own Franchise – Single or Multiple Stores (wow, I have thousands of “stores” with my networking business) Proven Business System (same with Network Marketing) High Repeat Customer Base (we have thousands of repeat customers monthly) Fun & Friendly Environment (What is more fun than working in my yoga pants at home) Established Company (Established and getting better) Extensive Training (Can’t beat the training and support) We Help You Get Started Site Selection (No comparison, I can work from home, THEIR coffee shop or anywhere in the world. I’ve made calls from the beach!) Lease Negotiations (Well, you may have to get creative for space but you don’t need much!) Store Layout and Design (NON issue) Inventory and Equipment Procurement (stop with the big words…we have online ordering) Customer Service Training (Simple ask - how is that product working for you, my friend?) Marketing and Advertising (We have complete training on that and enjoy teaching others this powerful skill) Ongoing Support (Provided by the company - BAM!!!) Ownership Qualifications (Dude, we own it and we take full responsibility for our success or failure!) Minimum Net Worth of $400k (Have a credit card with room on it, you are qualified!) Liquid Assets of at least $125k ( we want to help you ACHIEVE this!) Strong management, social skills (these will help, and can be learned!) Estimated Initial Investment – ranges from $241,500 to $440,000. Whoa! For less than $1000, in most cases , you can be in profit immediately! Read on… Even more staggering are these numbers - It’s $36,000 just for the franchise fee, and you are locked into a 10 year agreement with the company. And, the reserve the right to terminate the agreement at any time for non compliance. Okay, so what would you rather do? Invest $1000 or so initially along with some ongoing advertising and misc dollars and be in profit VERY quickly, or invest anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 million dollars and not be in profit for a few years and be  Now, let’s talk about Real Estate and Network Marketing and the two relate.   You can use this as an answer to the pyramid issue, or as a way to  share how we get paid in Network Marketing.   Have you ever bought or sold real estate, or know anyone who has?   Would you describe that as a pyramid, since the broker earns a commission off every sale made by the agents "under" him/her?   Actually, I would call that pretty smart leverage, wouldn't you?   Our profession is VERY much like Real Estate, really.   A real estate agent pays to go to school, pays to set up his/her office and pays all of their own expenses to launch a business.   It is a commission based business, and there are NO income guarantees.   It's all based on hustle. Your own hustle that is!   In our profession, it costs a lot less to get started, and there is actually more income potential through the team building leverage!   If you are using this in response to the pyramid question, be sure to ask first - what do you mean by pyramid? (Never assume, because sometimes it's just a way of describing how it's built, nothing more.)   If they DO mean something negative, just compare to real estate agents and brokers, the costs to start a real estate business and how the pay flows.   ACTION STEPS   Develop some simple language using these concepts so it flows easily off your tongue when the need arises.   Use this as an opening question - have you ever thought about going into real estate or buying a franchise? I’ve found something that pays as well or better, and costs a WHOLE lot less with no risk, would you like to hear more?   iTunes reviews shout out!   Brent Hammon - finally a practical approach. I don’t typically give reviews but I absolutely had to here. Jackie has an incredible, down to earth and realistic style that was worth my while.
