This is a personal reflection on dealing with distorted thinking. Psychological "red flags" are difficult to admit to, especially when they manifest in those you love and trust. Breaking a destructive cycle is hard but, left alone, will certainly become worse. In cases where your loudest screams go unheard, it's probably time to leave.

I always assumed that my obsession with emotional music was a personal flaw. I've packed away several albums so they cannot steal me away from normal functioning. I've guarded myself from certain content to avoid drifting into unsafe areas of my mind. Music is medicine for me. So much so that, much like cherry cough syrup, just the taste of it sends me reeling. My musical tastes are very much entangled in my own personal trauma. I know that now without a doubt.

[I could see] that it could help people know how to handle different things, but I really got to see bullying grow when I was a teacher and I would watch how kids would shame other kids or make them feel less than. They would make little snide comments like, who are you, who do you know or just this, this niceness. And they're so subtle sometimes that I think a lot of people wouldn't catch them. I love teaching middle school and that's where bullying really comes out. That's just a tough year for everybody. When I would watch a kid make some kind of awful remarked to somebody else, I learned to say to them, wow, I just heard what you said. And for you to do that, you must really be in pain yourself or you wouldn't want to be causing somebody else that kind of pain. And is this happening to you in school, out of school? Would you like to talk with me in public or private, but we need to discuss this because your level of hurt is now coming out to cause other people pain and that's not appropriate. That's how I would handle that. But I will tell you, because I grew up where so many people were being bullied, we learned to defend ourselves and how to talk back right away.

This ability led him to question commonly held beliefs about time, space and our assumptions about illnesses and disabilities. He started to amass a body of observations that still seemed out-of-step with the world he found himself in. He felt like a foreigner on the planet. In his mid-twenties he entered the world of advertising and stayed immersed there for a period of almost twenty years. However, in 1988 life and eventually his calling proceeded to wake him up. He was introduced first to traditional Reiki then to a very gifted healer, the late Eleanor Moore, in New Hampshire. Eleanor’s experiences with UFO’s and healing in particular served to confirm his own experiences and awareness. He finally felt that his early life’s experiences had been ratified. He hadn’t been crazy after all. His thirst for further understanding led him to Shamanism in 1989. Bernard’s formal introduction was with the Foundation for Shamanic Studies. Julie Woik is a writer and poet who has created the character-building children's book series, The Life and Times of Lilly the Lash®. Having worked in the field of psychiatry and as a teacher's aide earlier in her career, Julie discovered her innate ability to connect with others. Her dynamic personality and inherent sensitivity enable her to relate to children of all ages, and her relaxed demeanor allows her the opportunity to instill the important life lessons found throughout each of her books.In addition to the writing of the anticipated fifteen book series, she applies her meticulous attention to detail in all aspects of the books' development; from art direction to design layout, printing to distribution, and ultimately advertising and promotion.
