421: The Most Shocking Stories We've Ever Heard on Food Heals - Part 1: Escaping Abuse and Two Near Death Experiences

Food Heals

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2023 105:42

Throughout the years, we have heard some crazy and sometimes shocking stories on Food Heals. In this series, we're sharing the best of the best. You'll hear about a woman who had only 11 hours to escape from an abusive husband with her daughter in tow without letting him find out. You'll also hear from an actress who survived not one but TWO near-death experiences, a basketball player who proved that you don't need meat for muscle and can be a healthy, athletic vegan, a health coach who discovered where parasites really live in the body and how to remove them for good (hint: it's not pretty), and undercover investigators who endured witnessing animal cruelty to shed light on animal abuse and change the laws around factory farming. In the first episode in the series, the Alli and Suzy throw it back to episodes 194 and 126, where they interview two inspiring women who have overcome shocking, difficult challenges in their lives. In Part 1, they speak with Rosie Aiello, a survivor of an abusive relationship who eventually made "the great escape" from her abusive husband with her daughter in tow. Rosie is now a successful entrepreneur, coach, and author who is on a mission to help other women escape abusive relationships and thrive. In Part 2, they interview Maura Knowles, a survivor of two near-death experiences who turned her health struggles into a musical comedy and a line of healthy treats. Maura Knowles lay on the operating table, awake. A routine procedure that should have taken a few minutes had turned into a life-threatening operation. She was only 20. Everything that could have gone wrong in hospital, did—pancreatitis, infections, misdiagnoses, you name it. She survived not one near death experience, but two! Her fighting spirit and the support of her family pulled her through. Thank You to Our Sponsors! Athletic Greens Who else wants free Vitamin D for a year? If I were to ask you if you practice self-kindness or fierce loving kindness, could you honestly say yes? Practice as in this is a daily focus. Most women struggle in this area. And that's why I sat down with Rosie Aiello, founder of the Love is Kind Network, to talk about how we can bridge the gap between where we are and where we want to be. Rosie's story spans the globe as she found herself in a foreign country married to an abusive husband. As the abuse escalated, their daughter Sunny helped Rosie hatch an escape plan that will leave you in awe. Since returning to the United States, Rosie has built a network and a global movement to teach women how to fiercely be in loving, kind relationships, both with themselves and others. Rosie hands over some of those methods today. You'll want to listen to the very end! Key Takeaways: 00:00 Introduction 01:47 Rosie's story begins and how her abuse was the root of her relationship 04:17 How Rosie's daughter Sunny was her mother's defender 06:12 Verbal abuse became Sunny's boundary line. It's time to go forward with the escape of their lives 10:29 As their feet hit American soil, physical freedom begins 12:12 Abusive partners do not give up easily—the switch was ready to flip 14:58 Physical freedom is the easiest part. The healing journey begins with self-affirmations 17:07 Complex PTSD: a normal reaction to a horrible situation 21:06 How the Love is Kind Network was born 21:56 You do not have to be healed to start a new life 26:00 How we help our children through this growth and change 28:13 Purpose is often found in pain. Where we begin moving through turning loving kindness on ourselves 30:46 Sometimes, we don't know how to be our authentic selves or how to love ourselves. Yet, most of us know how to be kind. That's where we start 34:08 Fear is a liar. There is always help 34:33 Steps to find loving kindness for the self 35:12 Step 1: Self-care is mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual care 36:00 Step 2: Look at yourself. What are your values? What's important to you? 37:00 Step 3: Personal boundaries are not negotiable 38:00 Step 4: Showing up every day. You do not have to settle for anything less than what you want and desire 41:56 Understand that you will have a setback, but it's a part of life and trauma 42:54 Do not do this hard work alone. There are resources. “This is just not work to do by yourself. This is a deep core belief.” 45:42 The life you want is possible, but first, you must believe you can change your life 47:05 To move forward, you must learn how to progress your emotions. If you are doing the “overwork,” you may lack emotional intelligence or understanding. What's you know your red flags? 51:18 Put your life into practice 53:23 Self-grace is critical, and your vision can and does change 56:04 Half of the time your life won't be great, and the other half will be great – accept this fact and stop pushing for constant happiness 58:14  Carry around a journal to understand the unhelp thoughts. It's time to learn new truths about who you truly are 61:00 What Rosie wished she knew about shame during the years of her abuse 62:30 When we lean into vulnerable, we begin to realize that no one among us has not experienced shame 64:40 Rosie's three powerful things Sadly, since we recorded this episode, Rosie's daughter Sunny passed away unexpectedly. Everyone in the Get Your Life Together, Girl family offers our deepest sympathy and love to you, Rosie. We know that you will carry the torch that Sunny lit and will continue to serve women and free their lives and hearts from less than they deserve. After a 25-year relationship, Rosie Aiello, engineered an international escape from the Middle East to save her young adult daughter and herself from domestic violence. Stunned by PTSD and nearly mentally destroyed, she reinvented herself since arriving back in the United States, started her own business, and became a speaker, best-selling co-author and an international awarding-winning entrepreneur. And found the “kind” love of her life. With her Freedom Fulfillment Foundation system, Rosie helps women worldwide reclaim their voice, value, confidence, and courage so that they can create the joyful and productive life that they deserve, in both their personal life, and in work. She is on a global movement to inspire 100 million + women and their children to release the shackles of abuse so that they can reclaim their lives, to believe that they deserve to be treated with kindness—because this is the foundation for their empowerment. She is on a mission to create kinder intimate relationships, kinder families, kinder communities and therefore, a kinder world. It's a win-win-win. To help with that mission she created National Love is Kind Day, observed on July 27th to celebrate that real love is kind. It's not cruel, it's caring. It's not terrorizing, it's tender, it's not threatening, it's safe. Rosie and her daughter Sunny will be sharing their powerful story of escape, healing and freedom in their joint upcoming memoir entitled: 11 Hours to Freedom. In this conversation we get to hear the story of her marriage, the realisation that this was not how love is supposed to be and the subsequent escape to the United States from Lebanon. We cover “how did you not know?” and “why did you stay so long?”. We delve into what is a narcissist and how do they fool so many people, including those closest to them?Rosie shares how therapy, self-care and setting boundaries have helped both her and her daughter to realise how much they deserve kind and compassionate love. And how they are striving to help millions of women and children to find their freedom and their voices. Some of this content may be triggering. It is a really important conversation to have and I hope it will help anyone in the situation and anyone trying to help a friend or a family member in a similar situation. You can find Rosie on www.theloveiskindnetwork.comOn Twitter - @loveiskindtweetOn Instagram - @rosieaiello_loveiskindOn LinkedIn – Rosie Aiello, MBAPodcast – Vulnerable to Valuable https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/vulnerable-to-valuable/id1528869606Rosie is a frequent guest on live stages, podcasts and radio shows, including appearances on the BBC . “I lost myself in my narcissistic relationship.” That’s probably the most common phrase I hear from women. I felt the same when left that abusive relationship. And that’s why this podcast is all about discovering and becoming the real you—Creating a VISION of YOU 2021. Fear has gripped you so that you don’t even realize you are still hiding the real you.  Until the real, authentic you comes out, you won’t be able to have a true and kind intimate relationship that you desire.  It’s time to stop looking outside for your answers, or in others to make it better, or make you happy. That’s a plan you  may have followed in the past and that doesn’t work. The time is now, no matter your work or relationships status, to devote yourself to showing up on the inside like you show up on the outside to everyone else.  It’s time to feel good enough about yourself. Now wouldn’t that be a great VISION to fulfill for 2021? What could that woman do then when she embraced that and other beliefs to propel the vision you want to have of you? WOW! What a story! It was amazing how much resonated with mine...not in external circumstances so much as the internal terror... I'm sure it will resonate with you as well... any moment where you squashed your truth, hid out of fear, put yourself into a prison of your own making to keep the peace... yet it created hell inside your heart. We spoke of how shame can grow out of control if you don't reach out for help. We spoke of the love of our children. We spoke of what's possible when you focus on deserving a happy life being treated with kindness.  I'm not sure she's buying my point of view that our soul's chose this for our greatest evolution and of course there's no way of proving this point of view... yet for me when I see things FOR me not against me, it aligns my power, energy, certainty and empowers healthier choices. Rosie is for kindness, for speaking up, for living a life of joy that you deserve. She's amazing and you will love this ;-) xox p.s. Gentlemen…End the Fear of Rejection. Rosie Aiello began her entrepreneurial career shortly after leaving her husband after 25 years of abuse.  Back then, she consulted for companies, organizations and entrepreneurs who wanted to learn how to be more efficient with their time, as she provided time management and organizational tools for them to make the most out of their time.     But as she worked through her own healing, she realized that she needed to create something bigger...that she had a mission in this world to support women who have been in abuse.  And thus, the Love is Kind Network was born (https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheLoveisKindMovement).     Rosie provides group programs, retreats and other resources to bring women together and give them the support and love they need in order to thrive after abuse.     During this conversation, we talk about…   Why she decided to start a business vs. getting a job after she left her husband How she eventually escaped from her abuser What big mindset shifts she needed to have in order to transition her business from “working in her skills” with her time management business to “working in her mission” through the Love Is Kind Network.   The process she takes herself through every time she starts to doubt or be overwhelmed by her big mission.   Whether you’ve been in an abusive relationship or not, this conversation with Rosie is such a great example of allowing your business to be infused by your big mission and how to mentally and logistically make that happen!   You can join Rosie’s private Facebook Group HERE → https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheLoveisKindMovement   You can find out more about her book 11 Hours to Freedom here → https://www.11hourstofreedom.com/   ***   You may have noticed that so many of the women I’ve been bringing onto the show lately are talking about their challenges, changing seasons, transitions or self-doubts.  And really identifying how they got - and continue to get - through it all.     Meditation continues to be a tool that so many of them identify as one of the foundational ways they stay tuned into who they are, what’s important to them and how to continue doing the best right thing for them.     Whether you’ve been meditating for years or are a relative newbie, check out the guided meditations on the Meditation for Women podcast.  These are meditations I’ve created just...for...you!   I would love for you to take a listen and use it as your own personal library of guided meditations for the exact message you need to hear during all your seasons and transitions and moments of life!   Click HERE to check out Meditation for Women → https://goo.gl/m5YsKx   ***   Today’s show is brought to you by Active Campaign, the only email marketing system you’ll ever need.  After 9 years with the same email marketing provider, I was desperately searching for one that was simple, easy to manage and affordable.  Active Campaign easily stood out above the rest and I’ve been ridiculously happy with them ever since I made the switch! Today we discuss the courage to overcome abuse.   In October 1981 the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence launched a "Day of Unity" for those combatting and advocating against violence against women and children. Soon after, the Day of Unity became a full week also devoted to mourning victims that had died at the hands of domestic violence as well as celebrating those that have survived. In 1989, October was designated as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is exactly why I felt that our first show of the month should be dedicated to this very topic. There is a lot of abuse and violence taking place in our nation as we speak, whether it's happening in our communities, in politics, or within our very own homes. It's time for us all to take a stand and learn how to prevent and end domestic violence. My guest, Rosie Aiello, was trapped in an emotionally, mentally, and financially abusive relationship for nearly 25 years. She shares her powerful story of engineering an international escape from the Middle East to save both her and her daughter from domestic violence. Rosie shares her inspiring message along with tips for recognizing warning signs, setting boundaries, and overcoming the fear of being stuck in an unhealthy, unhappy, or dangerous relationship.   We Discuss: How our country continues to become more polarized and divided every day Discovering practical solutions to implementing more creativity and harmony in our lives Becoming conscious of the stories that we tell ourselves and learning to live from the present Rosie Aiello's personal journey of domestic violence and how she was able to escape Learning how to pay attention to the warning signs and acknowledge what doesn't feel right Examples of emotional abuse in relationships that are often times very subtle and unnoticed Setting necessary boundaries and learning how to ask for help and support from others Why denial plays such a big role in keeping people feeling stuck in an abusive relationship Gaining awareness of an abuser's patterns and behavior changes or lack thereof Steps for overcoming fear, ending our excuses, and finding the courage to believe in ourselves Regaining our freedom and reclaiming who we really are after experiencing the traumas of abuse   Visit:  VoicesofCourage.us

Domestic violence leaves so many people suffering in silence. How can you identify if you’re being abused? When you want to escape a relationship, what should you keep in mind? What are some of the biggest misconceptions that further isolate abuse victims? On this episode, domestic abuse survivor, speaker, and author Rosie Aiello shares how she survived and why she’s empowering others.   3 Things We Learned From This Episode   When you don’t know what abuse looks like, you can think you’re the problem (06:45 - 08:35)   A lot of women don’t realize that what they are actually experiencing is abuse. It’s only when they know the signs that they can empower themselves. Until then they will think they are the problem and keep trying to make it better.   Keep your escape private (17:29 - 17:46) When planning to leave an abusive partner, don’t tell them. If you do, they will only tighten the reins. This can put you and your children in danger.   Observe the patterns of behavior (25:26 - 27:46) When it comes to an abuser’s behavior, there are patterns you have to watch out for. They tend to be narcissistic, they don’t take responsibility, they aren’t willing to change their behavior, and they are great to the outside world but awful to you.   Abuse comes in many forms, and sometimes we don’t even recognize it’s happening to us. When we’re not being heard or given the love and respect we deserve, that’s a problem. The key to survival is being strong inside and learning what your value is. It’s possible to escape and finally live a life outside of the prison walls. Rosie is an incredible example of this. Remember: real love is kind, respectful, and understanding.   Guest Bio- After a 25 year marriage, Rosie Aiello engineered an international escape to save her daughter and herself from domestic violence. 11 Hours to Freedom In this episode, Sophia Wise One and Rosie Aiello discuss: What is 11 hours to freedom? How do you recognize abuse? You deserve to live the life you want. Key Takeaways: You can rebuild your life so that you can create a joyful and prosperous life that you deserve. Many women believe to be accepted they need to be nice at the cost of maintaining healthy boundaries. Women confuse being nice with being selfish, and that could not be further from the true. When women and especially children grow up confidently instead of being humiliated and belittled, they are able to thrive and contribute to and be productive in society, creating greater wealth--instead of losing years struggling to recover and overcome the negative imprint left in their minds and bodies. Nearly 60 percent of women aged 18 to 35 have experienced abuse in their relationships and 24 percent of women in abusive relationships have not told anyone they’re being harmed. These types of toxic relationships take a rigorous toll on our health; often causing PTSD & depression and can become extremely dangerous. In today’s episode we will tell the story of survivor and brave soul Rosie Aiello, the abuse she endured, and how she eventually made “the great escape.” Rosie Aiello moved to the Middle East to be with her new husband. On the outside, they had the perfect marriage, but the warning signs where there from the honeymoon. Isolated, without a support system, emotionally, physically and financially abused, Rosie spent most of her marriage not realizing she was in an abusive relationship; she just thought she wasn’t good enough. But the second she realized her daughter was also being controlled, she set about orchestrating the escape of their lives. Their bid to freedom worked, and they’ve been back in the US since 2009. Her book 11 Hours to Freedom describes her epic journey from the prison of her marriage to being free and living a joyful life. It wasn’t an easy ride. She came back in the middle of the recession, and finding a job was tough. Rosie didn’t let that stop her: she started her own business. She’s now an international award-winning entrepreneur, a best-selling author, and a coach for women seeking to escape their abusive relationships and break through into the life they deserve. Rosie and her daughter are on a global mission to save a million women and children from domestic violence. Because when women are free from the shackles of abuse, they can really thrive. Join their bid for a kinder word through the Love is Kind Movement. Rosie has created a women empowerment program called the Freedom Fulfilment Formula to help women care for themselves, reclaim their voice, step up, and create they life they dream of. Go to Rosie’s website for your free gift! How do you know if you are in an abusive relationship? The undeniable warning signs: Is he always blaming you for everything? Is he controlling the money in any shape or form? We get into panic hypervigilance and things like that. So it's key, and one of the things that I have on my wall that I have to keep reminding myself of, is that being fearful and afraid is not the same thing as being in danger. You have to kind of live life by that. Thoughts on Breathing As I've learned about this, I introduce it to all my coaching. Breathing is an integral part of it. I have to be reminded as well to breathe in slowly through my nose and go really slow on the exhalation to just slow everything down. It's key. Absolutely key to calming the whole nervous center, calming the fight and the flight and the freeze that we can get into so easily. It's just critical. Creating Boundaries for a Better Life   After a 25 year marriage, Rosie Aiello, engineered an international escape to save her daughter and herself from domestic abuse. Nearly mentally destroyed, she reinvented herself since arriving back in the United States, started her own business, and became a speaker, best-selling author and an international awarding-winning entrepreneur. Rosie and her daughter are now sharing their powerful story of escape, healing and freedom in their upcoming memoir called 11 Hours to Freedom. When Rosie started to write her memoir (along with her daughter) in January of this year, the wheels started to turn. One afternoon in the spring Rosie  got "an ass-kicking" from God who told her to help women and lead the fight against domestic abuse. Having said that, this work is equally important for men to hear--we especially need good men like the nice guys to stand up for women or anyone who is being mistreated. Topics of expertise include: Honoring yourself and others; asking with confidence; managing time during this precious life given to you; establishing and maintaining your boundaries, knowing your values.   Questions you'll hear on the podcast today How do they define and live in freedom? Freedom create financial abundance, to express yourself freely, to use your time how you want, to create a joyful life. What are some tips to get the most out of day--to manage that precious time given to you? What if you could ask confidently so you can get the outcome you want? How well are you managing your boundaries, or what I call, honoring yourself? Are you being too nice? And what's the cost to you? Have you identified your values? And why this is a foundation to respond to other questions.   Rosie's Website www.11HourstoFreedom.com Doug- @DJDoug Check out more episodes at www.bizwizpodcast.com Produced by www.TurnKeyPodcast.com You're the expert, let us help you prove it.
