Los Angeles is home for me and always in my heart. Watching the fires from afar in my current city, New York, has me thinking a lot about what makes my hometown great: breathtaking mountains, stunning beaches and above all a hodgepodge, tapestry community that comes together in powerful ways during a painful moment. The good and bad of LA's history — redlining and rebuilding, previous fires and displacement, immigration and annexation — have all been building blocks for an exchange of culture that shows up in layers in its music and art. This week on Alt.Latino, we've decided to shine a light on some of the sounds that feel most quintessentially LA, while also specifically honoring the creativity that has come from communities most affected by the fires. We're thinking of family and friends, and the beating heart of the city as a whole. There's nothing quite like LA and we hope this episode is an intro to some and an invitation for others to celebrate what makes it so special. —Anamaria SayreSongs featured on this episode:•José Feliciano, "California Dreamin"•Ry Cooder feat. Today I welcome bandleader and composer Skip Heller to the show. We talk about his new album Dark Passages by the Hollywood Film Noirchestra (Killer Kern Records) and how the project came into existence. We also chat about Louis Armstrong, Jerry Stahl, and his love for classic film. I had a blast talking to Skip. I was scrambling to write down his recommendations and interests! He is like the cool older brother that turns you onto art that will change your life. You can find the new album over on Bandcamp. Thanks for listening! Kyler --- Press Release: "Hollywood -- Bandleader/composer Skip Heller has long enjoyed a diverse career, but one close look at his resume - which includes working with Yma Sumac, Bootsy Collins, NRBQ, Lalo Guerrero, Los Lobos, the Klezmatics, Todd Rundgren, and Joe Bataan - and it becomes clear that film noir is his home base... Dark Passages (named after a David Goodis novel) takes the listener through the world of noir, largely concentrating on mid century classics (Touch of Evil, The Hustler, Kiss Me Deadly, Riffifi), B movies (Foreign Intrigue, Beat Girl), TV (Twilight Zone, Perry Mason), and two of Heller's noir originals. In addition, the first pressing features a cover by none other than Cal Schenkel, whose album covers for Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, and Tom Waits are (pardon the word) iconic." Dan began his multi-faceted career in New York where he moved from East Los Angeles at age twenty to pursue a career in musical theater. He performed off-Broadway, in regional theatre, summer stock and in musical revues at Manhattan's most fabled cabarets including the Bon Soir in Greenwich Village. He later became a successful theatrical agent with clients in the original casts of countless Broadway musicals in the years from A Chorus Line to Cats, representing Tony Award winners and future Hollywood stars. He returned home to Los Angeles for an equally successful time as a casting director for stage and television before turning his talents to producing and directing.Dan produced Lalo Guerrero: The Original Chicano, an award-winning documentary on his late father, Chicano music legend Lalo Guerrero. The film aired nationally on PBS stations in the Voces series hosted by Edward James Olmos and included a DVD/CD release. It continues to screen at national and international film festivals.Dan is an influential activist, speaking out in print, television and radio interviews in English and Spanish on both Latino/Chicano and LGBTQ issues. He is a popular figure on the speaking circuit and has addressed many prestigious groups and organizations throughout the United States. The Dan Guerrero Collection on Latino Entertainment and the Arts has been established in the California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) and The Dan Guerrero Research Collection is housed at the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center that includes his oral history recorded for their LGBT and Mujeres Initiative project. Most recently, the Dan Guerrero Gaytino collection became part of ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives at the USC Libraries.
Maggie LePique sits down with Dan Guerrero, an award-winning producer/director of diverse programming for network and cable television and of live arts and culture concert events at prestigious venues including the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for the LA Opera and multiple events at the Kennedy Center in DC. The eclectic artist also tours with his autobiographical solo play ¡Gaytino! Made in America that was recently filmed and is screening at U.S. Film Festivals. Guerrero is also an influential activist for both the Latinx and LGBTQ communities and is a popular figure on the speaking circuit. But he is most proud of his work as an educator teaching the course ¡Gaytino! Performance and the Power of One at UCLA. That led to his appointment as a UC Regents lecturer jointly in the UCLA Cesar E. Chavez Chicano/a Studies and LGBTQ Departments. Dan and I discuss Linda Ronstadt's new Memoir Feels Like Home: A Song For The Sonoran Borderlands as well as the companion CD from Putumayo Records: Feels Like Home: Songs from the Sonoran Borderlands—Linda Ronstadt's Musical Odyssey. In Feels Like Home, Grammy award-winning singer Linda Ronstadt effortlessly evokes the magical panorama of the Sonoran borderlands, a landscape etched by sunlight and carved by wind, offering a personal tour of the place where she came of age, built around meals and memories. Following her best-selling musical memoir, Simple Dreams, this book seamlessly braids together Ronstadt's recollections of people and their passions in a region little understood in the rest of the United States. The granddaughter of Mexican immigrants, Ronstadt celebrates the marvelous flavors and indomitable people on both sides of the border in this road trip through the high desert. Written in collaboration with Lawrence Downes and illustrated throughout with stunning photographs by Bill Steen, Feels Like Home features 20 recipes for traditional Sonoran dishes and a bevy of revelations for Ronstadt's admirers, including never-before-seen family photos. If this book were a radio signal, you might first pick it up on an Arizona highway, well south of Phoenix, coming into the glow of Ronstadt's hometown of Tucson. It would be playing the old canciones, from a time when the border was a place not of peril but of possibility.Putumayo has released Feels Like Home: Songs from the Sonoran Borderlands—Linda Ronstadt's Musical Odyssey, a musical accompaniment to the acclaimed singer's new book, Feels Like Home: A Song for the Sonoran Borderlands, published by Heyday Books. The musical collection was co-curated by Ronstadt and Putumayo founder Dan Storper and includes influential songs from her childhood and career, as well as several of her own interpretations of classic Mexican songs. Participating artists include legends and musical explorers Lalo Guerrero, Ry Cooder, Jackson Browne, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Neil Young, Taj Mahal and David Hidalgo. Anyone who's listened to the podcast for a while or hung around the LTA Facebook group long enough knows that my favourite working band is Los Lobos. You'd also possibly be aware that group saxophonist and keyboard player Steve Berlin has joined me on LTA in the past AND on See Hear.....well, Steve's baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.Los Lobos have released a new album in 2021 called Native Sons. The fact that they (or any band) are able to record and release new music in lockdown is astonishing. As great as Louis Perez, David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas are as songwriters, for this album, they are drawn to the music that influenced them along the way by heroes and peers specifically from Los Angeles....people like Lalo Guerrero, Jackson Browne, The Blasters, The Beach Boys, War and others.Steve and I speak about the role of these musicians in Los Lobos' development, Christmas music, working through Covid, the father of Chicano music, Ry Cooder, Tom Waits and a lot of other topics. Once again it was my privilege to have him back on the show – recorded 3 hours before Lobos were due to hit the stage!!!If you're in the US and are able to see Los Lobos live, DO IT. Los Lobos, For What It's WorthDavid Crosby, River Rise (feat. Christmas eve 1916 on the corner of Meyer and Simpsons, Eduardo “Lalo” Guerrero was an born. He would grow to become a champion of his Chicano/Mexican culture and recognized worldwide for his singing and prolific song writing. In his younger years he performed all over Tucson and his talent eventually led him to Los Angeles. Lalo Guerrero was of a generation known as the pachuco period, a time when young Chicanos expressed their growing cultural identity and independence. They flowed right into the zoot suit-influenced clothing, language and music. We recently sat down with a couple of men who briefly crossed paths with Lalo Guerrero and got their impressions of Lalo's impact. Ruben Lopez Moreno will be 92 on Christmas. He grew up on Convent St- just a stone's throw from Guerrero's home. He went to school with Lalo's younger brothers and tells of a time when everyone played music and sang-- Lalo just did it better. Senor Moreno was joined in the interview with his son, also named Ruben who has a successful music career with Mariachi Luz de Luna. The younger Moreno has toured with Calexico, helped numerous schools create a mariachi program and been performing throughout Tucson for over 40 years.

In a concert in celebration of Hispanic American Heritage Month, Agustin Lira and Alma & Quetza perform. Speaker Biography: Standing on the shoulders of giants like Lalo Guerrero, Ritchie Valens, Cannibal and The Headhunters, The Brat, Los Lobos and many others, Quetzal has created a path that has earned them the recognition as "one of Los Angeles' most important bands" (L.A. Times). Quetzal has shared the stage with a diverse list of artists such as Los Lobos, Zack de La Rocha, Ziggy Marley, Los Van Van, Taj Majal, Daara J, Ruben Blades, Fishbone, Cubanismo, Littlefeat and Ozomatli. Led by Martha Gonzalez (vocals, tarima, chekere, congas) and Quetzal Flores (jarana, requinto doble, bajosexto, electric guitar), Quetzal plays music that is as rich and complex as their pluri-ethnic barrio experience. Since 2002 Quetzal has been central in facilitating a transnational dialogue between Chicanao musicians and artists from California and Mexicano musicians and dancers from Veracruz, Mexico. Quetzal most recently completed its fifth studio album, titled Imaginaries, to be released in early 2012 on the Smithsonian Folkways label. Speaker Biography: Agustin Lira, a NEA National Heritage Fellow (2007), began his career in 1965, at the age of 19, when he co-founded the theater company El Teatro Campesino with Luis Valdez, during the Delano Grape Strike headed by Cesar Chavez. The company created songs and plays, performed at picket lines and rallies, and toured throughout the United States, demonstrating the power of artistic expression in uniting and inspiring the farmworker communities. Lira's powerful singing and socially relevant lyrics were at the heart of El Teatro Campesino and established his role as the preeminent musical voice of the early Chicano Movement. Since leaving Campesino, Lira has formed several other theater groups, composed music for films and recordings, and received numerous awards. Together with Patricia Wells Solorzano, Lira formed the musical group Alma in 1979. Alma features original compositions by Lira and is known for its mesmerizing duets, inspirational lead guitar playing by Wells, and incomparable, rhythmic bass by Ravi Knypstra. Alma blends Mexican, Latin American, American Folk and Afro-Cuban styles, creating a hybrid: Chicano music. Alma has performed throughout the United States, Mexico and Cuba, produced several recordings, and scored the music for the award-winning film documentary, "The Fight in the Fields: Cesar Chavez and the Farmworkers' Struggle."
