He is one of only eight players to have scored 700 goals in the NHL. He established an NHL record of seventeen 30-goal seasons. In short, Mike Gartner was born to score goals.Currently the chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Gartner joined Neil and Vic for an in-depth conversation covering numerous topics from learning to become one of the game's great skaters to being traded near the deadline on three different occasions to his admiration of two present day legends.IN THIS EPISODE:[01:08] - Neil welcomes in Mike Gartner to NHL Wraparound's Hall of Fame Edition. Some small talk includes Vic interviewing Mike back in 1984.[02:47] - Neil recalls a first for him when it came time to doing a contract with Mike - an historic deal from the N.Y. Rangers perspective.[06:56] - Neil recalls the short-lived players strike in 1992. With Mike being head of the NHLPA, it did present an awkward situation with the Rangers en route to the Presidents' Trophy with aspirations of a Stanley Cup.[08:26] - Neil shares with Mike that both of them played for the same youth team, albeit at different times.[10:57] - One of the great skaters in the history of the NHL, Mike takes us all the way back to the beginning, where natural ability and power skating school were key elements to defining himself. This served him well not only in the NHL, but in international tournaments as well.[15:53] - Aftercoming up through the junior ranks, Gartner signed with Cincinnati in the WHA and had a pretty renowned teammate in advance of being drafted by Washington in 1979.[17:10] - Mike shares the players who were helpful to him upon his arrival with the Caps in 1979.[18:43] - A few words on Brian Engblom, who was influential on prior Hall of Fame Edition guest, Scott Stevens.[20:24] - Discussing the three deals involving Mike at or around the trade deadline from Washington to Minnesota in 1989, on to New York the next year and from the Rangers to Toronto in 1994 - a deal Neil still regrets having had to make despite the ultimate prize finally coming to the Rangers after 54 years.[23:00] - Further discussion between Mike and Neil on the trade.[24:14] - The brief stop in Minnesota before the trade to New York.[26:40] - The speed becomes legend after Gartner's performance in the 1996 NHL Skills competition, only broken recently by another legend. Mike speaks about the amazing skating of Connor McDavid and where he separates himself from all others.[28:50] - Mike notes how his offensive game might be different in today's NHL.[31:14] - From speed and skating to goalscoring, Mike comments on the greatest ever, Alexander Ovechkin.[34:39] - Mike's career wrapped up in Phoenix with the Coyotes and was a teammate of Keith Tkachuk, who's sons are certainly household names in the NHL.[36:47] - The new role as full chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame succeeding Lanny McDonald and what Mike hopes to accomplish during his term.[39:02] - Some closing words with Hall of Famer Mike Gartner.[41:47] - Vic and Neil close with some final words.X: https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/NHL Wraparound Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/#NHLWraparound #NHLWraparound.com #ShortShifts #NYCentric #CelebritySeries #HallofFameEdition #StanleyCupdate #SummerCoolers #Smith'sPix #NeilSmith #VicMorren #PatrickHoffman #NHL #SummerCoolers #QuickTakes #MikeGartner #HockeyHallofFame #WashingtonCapitals #MinnesotaNorthStars #N.Y.Rangers #TorontoMapleLeafs #PhoenixCoyotes #WesJarvis #GusBadali #RickCurran #NHLPA #TorontoYoungNationals #TorontoRedWings #HapEmms #NiagaraFallsFlyers #BobbyHull #GuyLafleur #CanadaCup #IgorLarionov #SergeiMakarov #VladimirKrutov #MarkMessier #GlennAnderson #WayneGretzky #MarioLemieux #CincinnatiStingers #RayBourque #RyanWalter #RodLangway #BrianEngblom #UlfDahlen #SergeiZubov #DinoCiccarelli #LarryMurphy #BobRouse #JackFerreira #DylanLarkin #ConnorMcDavid #AlexanderOvechkin #AlKoken #KeithTkachuk #BradyTkachuk #OttawaSenators #MatthewTkachuk #FloridaPanthers #ShaneDoan #JeremyRoenick #KrisKing #TeppoNumminen #LannyMcDonald #JeffDenomme #JamieDinsmore #MikeRichter #AdamGraves #JohnVanbiesbrouck #RogerNeilson #ScottyBowman #PierreTurgeon #SteveYzerman #CraigPatrick

This week on Enjoying Orange Slices with Jeff & Ian, the duo returns with a fast-paced, insight-packed look at the Stanley Cup Playoffs!
It's a Quick Fix featuring Joe Buono (@IslesFix) and former VP of Communications for the Islanders, Chris Botta (@ChrisBottaNHL).The list of potential Islanders GMs is long, very long. In the last week, fans and media alike have speculated about a wide range and variety of candidates from Hall-of-Famers, to retreads, to popular Assistant GMs, and out-of-the-box options from around the league. For the first time, possibly in their history, the Islanders are conducting a proper search for their general manager. The man in charge of that search is John Collins, and reports indicate there's been no shortage of interest from qualified candidates around the league. It's now the job of Collins to sift through the chatter and the noise and decide which candidates deserve a long look.Plus, Chris and Joe comment on the organization letting go of radio broadcasters Chris King and Greg Picker, and the backlash response from the media and fan base. Is there still time for the team to reverse course? Joe then asks Chris where he was when Lanny McDonald broke the 1977-78 Islanders' hearts in overtime, which happened 47 years ago today at the Nassau Coliseum. The task will be tougher this week with all 11 winners on the LPGA Tour and 19 of the top 20 players in the world entered in the event. Zhang said the biggest change for her has been the demands on her time. Hockey – Henrik Lundqvist headlines the Hockey Hall of Fame’s goalie-heavy class of 2023 Henrik Lundqvist headlines the Hockey Hall of Fame’s goaltender-heavy class of 2023. Fellow netminders Tom Barrasso and Red Wing Mike Vernon were also among the five players elected. Former NHL forward Pierre Turgeon and Canadian women’s hockey star Caroline Ouellette were also chosen. Stanley Cup-winning coach Ken Hitchcock and late executive Pierre Lacroix were picked in the builder category. Lundqvist is set to be inducted into the Hall in his first year of eligibility after winning Olympic gold for Sweden in 2006 and a pro career that included backstopping the New York Rangers to 11 playoff appearances in 12 seasons. Vernon was so surprised he thought board chairman Lanny McDonald, a teammate when they won the Cup together with Calgary in 1989, was calling to ask him to play golf. The two-time Cup champion who was also playoff MVP when he won it in 1997 with Detroit had been eligible since 2005. "The game has meant a lot to me throughout my life," Vernon said. “It is an emotional time for me. Might be a long time coming, but it’s still worth it.” FIFA – WWC – Morgan and Rapinoe selected for the US Women’s World Cup roster Eighteen-year-old Alyssa Thompson is among the 23 players selected for the United States team that will defend its title at the Women’s World Cup next month. Thompson is among a mix of veteran and newcomers named Wednesday to the team by head coach Vlatko Andonovski. Among the experienced players are Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, who will each be making a fourth World Cup appearance in Australia and New Zealand. Thompson is joined by fellow up-and-coming stars Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman, who is the daughter of former NBA star Dennis Rodman. Olympics – IOC warns Afghanistan about Olympic status over denying sports to women The Afghanistan team’s status for the 2024 Paris Olympics has been put in question by the IOC over growing frustration with the Taliban blocking access to sport for women and girls. The International Olympic Committee says it “continues to be extremely concerned” about the sports situation in Afghanistan despite its repeated calls for action. The IOC says it has the right to take further measures. And it notes details for an Afghanistan delegation going to the Paris Games haven’t been decided. The IOC could suspend Afghanistan’s Olympic body for government interference and support athletes to compete as an independent team. Rangers 6, White Sox 3 – Heim homers as Rangers beat the White Sox 6-3 Jonah Heim hit a three-run homer a night after he was involved in a controversial play at the plate and the Texas Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3. The scouts, ranging from 55 to 71, allege they were discriminated against from 2020-22. MLB said in a statement it looks "forward to refuting these claims in court.” NBA – NBA-champion Nuggets trade into the 1st round by swapping picks with the Pacers The NBA-champion Denver Nuggets struck a deal with Indiana to acquire a first-round round pick in the draft on Thursday night. The teams agreed to a deal that also gives the Nuggets the 32nd overall pick, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The Pacers will receive the 40th pick in this year’s draft from Denver and a first-round pick in 2024. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade has yet to be announced. NBA – With Wembanyama, there’s no debate at the top of NBA draft Victor Wembanyama’s towering shadow has hung over this NBA draft for months, blocking much of what is usually part of the process. There has been no debate about who the San Antonio Spurs should take with the No. 1 pick on Thursday night. When a player like Wembanyama comes along — and maybe none ever has — there’s no real reason to drum up any drama. The Spurs are not going to pass up someone who is listed at 7’4” but has the skills of a player much smaller. The 19-year-old from France has been called the best prospect since LeBron James came out of high school in 2003. NBA – NBA Draft Picks Detroit, 5, 31 Chicago: 11 (traded to Orlando), 42 (traded to Washington) Indiana: 7, 26 (from Cleveland), 40 (from Dallas), 55 (from Cleveland) WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Washington Mystics at Chicago Sky, 8:00 p.m. Indiana Fever at Seattle Storm, 10:00 p.m. Golf – PGA Tour will appear before a Senate panel investigating its deal with LIV A Senate subcommittee is asking executives from the PGA Tour, Saudi golf interests and LIV Golf to testify as Congress investigates the shocking business deal that upended the sport. Sen. Richard Blumenthal announced Wednesday that the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations would hold a hearing on July 11 to examine the stunning agreement the PGA Tour now has with Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund and the European tour. He invited PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, Public Investment Fund Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan and LIV CEO Greg Norman to testify. The PGA Tour said in a statement that it looked forward to appearing to answer questions about the “framework agreement.” Golf – Zhang seeking to follow win in pro debut with a win at a major Rose Zhang turned professional with many expecting great things and she didn’t disappoint, winning the Mizuho Americas Open in her debut. We're joined in this one by former NHL defenceman Jamie Macoun, who has some amazing stories from his NHL days, particularly with the Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs. Russ never enjoyed going into the corner to battle with Macoun. Jamie talks about some colourful general managers he had in the past like Doug Risebrough who didn't exactly treat Doug Gilmour fairly. He had zero love for Toronto's associate GM duo of Ken Dryden and Mike Smith. Former teammate Mike Bullard felt a little too welcome at Jamie's house, even using his bathroom in the middle of the night. Lanny McDonald was always late for everything. Things got a little tense in Toronto when the Leafs acquired so many former Flames and Oilers and Jamie was NOT going to share a room with Glen Anderson. Toronto definitely wasn't an easy place to play when things weren't going well. And what happened in Jamie's post-NHL career that saw him get not one but two bank deposits for $16 million??? All that and more in this episode of the Suspendables!
