In “It's A Wonderful Life,” BEULAH BONDI played the most loving mother to JAMES STEWART. Ma Bailey is the epitome of sweetness, kindness, and supportiveness so it's quite shocking when we meet the Ma Bailey who would have existed had George Bailey not been born. She's cold, bitter, and unkind. It gives Bondi the wonderful opportunity to play two versions of the same character, which she does flawlessly. So to celebrate Mother's Day, Nan and Steve are taking a page from Bondi's playbook as they discuss the good and bad mothers of classic cinema.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Moms in the Movies (2014), by Richard Corliss; Actresses of a Certain Character (2007), by Axel Nissen; Irene Dunne: First Lady of Hollywood (2006), by Wes D. Vintage Classic Radio presents the Sunday Night Playhouse, where we bring to life timeless classics from the golden age of radio between the 1930s and the 1960s. Episode Description:"Leave Her to Heaven" is a Lux radio play adapted from the novel of the same name by Ben Ames Williams. The play was broadcast on March 17, 1947, and starred Gene Tierney as the lead character, Ellen Berent. The story follows the beautiful and possessive Ellen, who marries a successful writer named Richard Harland (played by Cornell Wilde) after a brief courtship. However, Ellen's obsession with Richard soon turns dark, as she becomes jealous of anyone who gets close to him, including his disabled younger brother (Darryl Hickman) and Ellen's own cousin (Vincent Price). Eventually, Ellen's desire for control leads her to commit a shocking act of violence. The Lux radio play adaptation of "Leave Her to Heaven" was notable for its star-studded cast, which also included Jeanne Crain as Richard's new love interest, Mary Phillips as Ellen's mother, and Ray Collins as the district attorney. The play was directed by William Keighley and adapted for radio by Milton Geiger. "Leave Her to Heaven" was originally released as a film in 1945, with Tierney reprising her role as Ellen Berent. The film was a critical and commercial success, and Tierney's performance was particularly praised. Hello, romantics! Your host Manish (@vertigay314) invites Melanie Greenberg (@moviemavengal) of Pardesi Reviews (@PardesiYT) for John M. Stahl's Leave Her to Heaven! The 1945 film starring Gene Tierney is both a dark film noir thriller and a lush, vibrantly colorful Technicolor melodrama.. With a captivating and disturbing lead performance, bonkers twists, and allusions to Greek mythology, the film is one of a kind. Its influence on the "obsessed lover" genre cannot be understated!

Happy Thanksgiving from Front Row Classics! Classic film fans around the world are celebrating Noirvember. This week, we're discussing one of the most unique film noirs to come out of Hollywood, Leave Her to Heaven. Brandon and Eric welcome back author and film historian, Sloan De Forest, to discuss this psychological thriller. Filmed in beautiful Technicolor, Leave Her to Heaven was 20th Century Fox's highest grossing film of the entire decade of the 1940s. Much of the film's success is due to the chilling performance of Gene Tierney in her only Oscar-nominated role.  We're incredibly thankful for all of the support we have received throughout 2022. Thank you so much for keeping the conversation on classic film alive.

Leave Her To Heaven, une tentative d'emprise vouée à l'échec. CREDITS: Extraits films: Leave Her To Heaven, John M. Stahl, 1945 Laura, Otto Preminger, 1944 The Shangai Gesture, Joseph Von Sternberg, 1941Hébergé par Ausha. Visitez ausha.co/politique-de-confidentialite pour plus d'informations.

One of Martin Scorsese's favorite films, Gone Girl...I mean Leave Her to Heaven, is a deliciously frothy and gorgeously shot piece of cinema that will make you, like the protagonist, fall in love with Gene Tierney, and then regret it shortly after. Suspenseful, fun, visually beautiful, and slightly campy, this film is great for a Friday night in. On March 20, 2019, 20th Century Fox ceased to exist when the Walt Disney Co. completed its acquisition of what was once one of Hollywood’s six major studios. Although their catalogue stretches back more than 100 years, 20th Century Fox was officially formed in 1935 with the merging of two smaller studios, Fox Film Corporation and 20th Century Pictures. To commemorate this significant moment in cinema history, we invited back a regular Cinematheque guest, film archivist and preservationist Schawn Belston, to speak to our audiences and chat with us here on Cinematalk. In a career at Fox that spanned more than 25 years at Fox, Schawn’s work in film preservation began with the 1997 re-issues of the original STAR WARS TRILOGY. He eventually became Executive Vice President of Media and Library Services at Twentieth Century Fox, oversseing all archival and preservation work of the studio’s extensive library. Today, Schawn is a Senior Vice-President at the Walt Disney Company where he still looks after the Fox library, in addition to the Disney Studio’s catalogue. Schawn joined us on November 8 and 9 to present a special clip-filled history of 20th Century Fox called FOX: AN APPRECIATION, and an archival print of John M. Stahl’s great melodrama, LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN. The Cinematheque’s series tribute to Fox continues on Friday, December 6 with a double feature of two pre-code titles from the Fox Film Corporation, 1932’s QUICK MILLIONS starring Spencer Tracy, and 1933’s BLOOD MONEY, with George Bancroft, Judith Anderson and Frances Dee. Both films were directed by the talented and mysterious Rowland Brown. Then, on December 15, the Cinematheque’s 2019 programming will conclude with a contemporary classic from 20th Century Fox, the original 1988 DIE HARD, showing in a 35mm print from the collection of the Chicago Film Society.
