On the fortieth episode of All the Film Things, I talked with professor/ author James Miller! James Miller is a liberal studies professor at the New School for Social Research in New York City. He wrote music reviews for Rolling Stone in the 70s and spent much of the 80s reviewing books and writing pop music criticism for Newsweek. Among Jim's many accomplishments, he has been a Guggenheim Fellow and his work continues to be published in magazines, peer- reviewed academic journals, and newspapers. Jim has written several books over the course of his decades- spanning career focused on various subject matters from philosophy (Examined Lives: From Socrates to Nietzsche) to politics (Can Democracy Work? A Short History of a Radical Idea, from Ancient Athens to Our World) to music. His book Flowers in the Dustbin: The Rise of Rock & Roll won the ASCAP- Deems Taylor Award for the best music book written of 1999.Jim's latest book, the first he's written focused on film, is titled The Passion of Pedro Almodóvar: A Self- Portrait in Seven Films and will be published through Columbia University Press on April 29. Through this book, Jim examines the work, and by extension self, of Almodóvar through his most personal films. This book will be available for purchase wherever books are sold so preorder your copy now on Barnes & Noble, Amazon, etc.! You'll definitely want to click this link to preorder the book on Barnes & Noble!: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-passion-of-pedro-almodovar-james-miller/1146504374;jsessionid=473B373D1171A12E15F5B951CC989AA7.prodny_store01-atgap07 If you're in the New York area, Jim will be sitting down with Robert Polito for an hour- long conversation on pub day about his book at the New School at 6 pm. Learn more about this event by clicking this link!: https://event.newschool.edu/booklunchjimmillerThis is Jim's first appearance on ATFT! I wouldn't have had the opportunity to interview him without two- time ATFT guest, film historian Max Alvarez presenting me with this opportiunity. I'm very grateful to him and Sarah C. Noell of Columbia University Press for helping bring this interview into fruition. Before reading Jim's book, I had seen three Almodóvar films and the latter two, Parallel Mothers (2021) and All About My Mother (1999), blew me away. For a few years now, I had been wanting to go through Almodóvar's work but his films are not so easy to come by. Reading Jim's brilliant, analytical book was the perfect opportunity to finally dive in, leaving me completely changed. Why aren't people talking about Almodóvar?! Quentin Tarantino was right when he said Almodóvar is largely underrated in the US. This episode was recorded on April 3, 2025. In this episode, Jim shares incredible stories from his career from gettign a private concert from Paul McCartney to inspiring a Jimi Hendrix song. We talk about some of cinema's greatest filmmakers, such as Ingmar Bergman and Alfred Hitchcock, before discussing the work of Pedro Almodóvar for much of the episode. Filmmakers and film aficionados will especially enjoy this episode. Jim also talks about the impact of Michelangelo Antoninoni's Blow-up (1966) , Almodóvar's dynamic with muse Penélope Cruz, and inspiring Tom Hayden to write his memoir. All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things!P.S.) If you're listening on Spotify, share your thoughts on Pedro Almodóvar in the comments! Pedro Almodóvar (The Skin I Live In, Parallel Mothers) helped cement Spain's place in cinematic history with bold films that are colourful, provocative and full of dramatic plot twists. But his defiant spirit and transgressive filmmaking style was hard-earned. Fresh off his second English-language project, “Strange Way of Life,” Pedro shares how growing up under a dictatorship shaped him as an artist, what it felt like to finally be “free” in his creative expression, and what he loves about working with actors like Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz.

I'd seen Parallel Mothers (starring Penelope Cruz) and fell in love with that movie. One tiny detail that elevated the story was a custom fade out technique. I took note of it and with my 2nd feature film (A Bogota Trip—https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuY24xrpQOg) I wanted incorporate something similar. I give a look as to how I went about achieving that. We're wrapping up a month of Pedro Almodóvar with his most recent movie, 2021's "Parallel Mothers." Penélope Cruz's Oscar nomination is much deserved in this story of two mothers whose lives intertwine in beautiful, tragic and sometimes confusing ways after the concurrent birth of their daughters. Familiar faces Rossy de Palma and Julieta Serrano are back, Israel Elejade gives us Spanish Marc Maron, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón gives us best supporting monologues, and you won't believe where the signature red shows up in this one. We also discuss parallels to All About My Mother, some scandalous shower curtains, that hotel smell, and how we'd rank the four Almodóvar movies covered this month. "Alas, it is Almodovar in my least favorite mode: As the man who crafts soap-operatic excuses for actresses like Cruz to weep at length." Dennis Harvey of 48 Hills, like many critics in history, gets it absolutely wrong. Yes, we agree that there are soap opera dynamics at play here, but in our (MUCH BETTER) opinion, Cruz acts admirably and downright calm, as opposed to “weeping at length. “Parallel Mothers is a movie of infinite tenderness, that rare ode to motherhood that acknowledges mothers as women first and mothers second.” Stephanie Zacharek of TIME magazine apparently lets us know that we picked the right movie to start our month of mothers. Good job, us. Even if Mike is lighter on the movie than Dave (how could he not be), they have a good conversation that covers Almodovar, movie stars, beautiful filmmaking, and Jessica Chastain, for some reason. Also Mike's dog loves nipples. Anthony reviews Pedro Almodovar's excellent drama "Parallel Mothers" spoiler-free!
Pedro Almodovar's "Parallel Mothers" is the Mother's Day treat because it highly puts representation of motherhood between two generations. It shows no matter at what age you are, mother instincts kick in, some more than others. I dug the writing and how the characters brought it out so well it makes you feel like you're in the scenes. The use of red as always is so good. The mixture of the concept of ancestry could have been more balanced but I understood the point of it all.
It's disappointing to think some people will never see Parallel Mothers because they just won't read subtitles. Penélope Cruz is one of our great actresses. Capable of phenomenal work that transcends language. Shame that most English language productions fail to give her solid material to work with. So, given her recent Academy Award nomination for Parallel Mothers, Adam and Thomas felt like it was time for her to receive the Double Re-Deux treatment! First, Penélope Cruz and her frequent collaborator Pedro Almodóvar weave a tale of grief and ghost farts with Volver. Then, Ridley Scott squeezes Penélope Cruz into a packed ensemble film about the nihilistic nature of drug cartels in The Counselor. Together, our duo answers the crucial questions. Why do American films often fail Penélope Cruz? What does it look like when an inhuman entity makes a crime drama? Which films will they choose for next week's episode about Michael Mann? This week we're tackling another 2022 Academy Award nominee, Pedro Almodovar's Parallel Mothers. It's not nominated for Best Picture or even Best International Feature Film, which is weird--what the hell, Academy? But Penelope Cruz is nominated for Best Actress in her seventh film with the director, and longtime Almodovar collaborator Alberto Inglesias is nominated for Best Original Score. This is a more overtly political film than most in Almodovar's oeuvre, with a narrative concerning the Spanish Civil War and the lingering agony over those who were murdered by fascists. It's also a vivid film melodrama, with a wild central point of tension--were the two mothers' babies switched shortly after birth?

In this mini-episode, Mei quizzes Blanca on one of her favourite topics – Kitchens in Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar's movies. From the tenebrous kitchen in What Have I Done to Deserve This? to the airy 90s kitchen in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, some of the most famous kitchens of the Almodóvar universe are discussed. Plus Mei and Blanca discuss foods like flan and gazpacho that are quintessential to understanding Almodóvar himself, Spanish society and being a woman. Almodovar has just released the movie Parallel Mothers with Penélope Cruz, one in which the kitchen tells us about the lives of the characters and his first openly political movie about the consequences of the Spanish Civil War. Furthermore, Almodóvar recently edited the Director's issue for W magazine in which Penélope Cruz, his longtime muse, is featured as an aspiring actress in a casting of the opera Carmen. Real Housewives of Orange County star Heather Dubrow and her husband, Dr. Terry Dubrow, are helping struggling couples work through their problems — also with the help of therapists, nutritionists, and fitness instructor — or discover that divorce really is best for them, on the new series 7 Year Stitch. The hosts of Two Sentence Horror Stories: The Podcast — Danielle Radford and Megan Rosati — tell us about all of the TV shows they've been watching, including some horror, genre, and reality. Plus, entertainment headlines — including Michael Douglas' electrifying new role, Matt Barr's return to Walker, and the deaths of actors Ned Eisenberg and Ralph Ahn — and trivia. Oscar award winning screenwriter and director, Pedro Almodóvar, speaks candidly with W Magazine's editor at large, Lynn Hirschberg, about his photoshoot for W Magazine's 2022 Directors Issue, working with the ultimate muse, Penélope Cruz, his latest film, Parallel Mothers, and how he almost directed the 2005 classic, Brokeback Mountain. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wmagazine/message
It's the barely feature length cartoon that jerked more tears than every Nicholas Sparks movie combined! THE LAND BEFORE TIME traumatized and entertained (citation needed) a generation of VHS-capable millennials; is it any good, or was it mostly just a grim harbinger of inevitable death? This week's recommendations: Kahmeela has mixed feelings about SCREAM but very positive ones about TED LASSO. Sean doesn't care about UNCHARTED but is mildly pleased with DEATH ON THE NILE. And Robin is in full Oscars mode, praising CODA and PARALLEL MOTHERS (kinda).
The Night Before couple finds a wonderful new place just on the other side of the bay from their hometown - Grindhaus Brewing Lab. Not only does Grindhaus make some great brews, they also screen great films every weekend. Though the Night Before couple did not see any films at Grindhaus Brewing Lab this time around, they did discuss two very different films NIGHTMARE ALLEY and PARALLEL MOTHERS. Despite the different genres of each film, the Night Before couple manages to bring the two films together in a single conversation. Pedro Almodóvar's "Parallel Mothers" had its world premiere at last year's Venice Film Festival, where it won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for the film's star, Academy Award-winner Penélope Cruz. She has since gone on to win other Best Actress prizes from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Society Of Film Critics. This is Cruz's seventh film with Almodóvar, and it's clear there's an inherent trust in their working relationship. Cruz was kind enough to spend some moments talking with us about her work on the film, her relationship with Almodóvar, her thoughts on her character, Janice, and what she plans to do next. Episode 74: Venice 6 – Reflection, Trenches, The Catholic School, Parallel Mothers with Jessica Kiang Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. My 2021 Venice Film Festival series of podcasts concludes (for now?) with critic Jessica Kiang, a contributor to Variety, The Playlist, and The New York Times. I talked with Jessica about the formally audacious film Reflection from Ukraine's Valentyn Vasyanovych, with a shout-out to the conflict doc Trenches; a controversial Italian drama, The Catholic School; and one of her favorites of the festival, the life-giving Parallel Mothers.
