Most companies unwittingly undermine their biggest growth opportunities by ignoring the complex morality of social media—where good technology depends on who controls it, and who benefits. Hosted by Eleanor Drage, this episode features Crystal Abidin, Professor of Internet Studies at Curtin University, who exposes the hidden power plays behind platforms like TikTok, revealing how what's 'good' or 'bad' technology is often a matter of perspective—and power. This eye-opening episode, Eleanor and Crystal explore how social media's ambivalence shapes youth cultures and influence—covering TikTok's surprising origins, from climate activism to viral animals, and how state bans and geopolitical tensions transform global online communities. Crystal breaks down how content creators, from neurodivergent communities to cultural niche groups, leverage memes, humor, and subcultural capitals to forge solidarity and push back against systemic inequities.Reading List:https://wishcrys.com/TikTok Cultures Research NetworkHer work:Abidin, Crystal. 2026. https://yt.link/quMC2B9 → thank you for the sponsor of this episode hers. Learn more about hers.  Inayah on what it actually takes to stop being someone who's always ready to leave. Inayah is a Houston-born R&B singer and songwriter who first broke through with her viral cover of Ella Mai's "Boo'd Up" in 2018 (a moment that grew her following by over a million people overnight) and has since built a catalog — and a public identity — around emotional honesty, female independence, and not needing a man. Her forthcoming album is called Therapy Wasn't Enough, which is also the most accurate description of where this conversation begins. In this episode, Inayah gets specific about what it means to be a leaver (someone who, at any given moment, is already scanning for the reason to go) and what it has actually cost her to try to become something different inside a relationship with a partner whose traditional Jamaican values regularly collide with her experience as a modern American woman building her own life on her own terms. Neither of them has figured it out yet (they're not reporting from the finish line here), and that honesty is exactly what makes this conversation worth sitting with. This one is for anyone who loves someone and still can't quite make themselves put both feet in. Big love to the sponsor of this episode, Masterclass.

The wide-ranging impact of Australia's new social media ban for children under 16 — the first of its kind in the world — is already being felt at home and abroad, especially for major platforms that have controversially allowed children full access. The ambitious move to improve online safety governance for youngsters, which took effect on Dec 10, requires major platforms like Instagram, Facebook, X, Snapchat, TikTok, Reddit, and YouTube to enforce the new legislation. They face fines of up to A$49.5 million ($32.9 million) if they take no reasonable steps to prevent underage users from holding accounts with them. The ban follows a major survey which revealed how social media is negatively affecting the life satisfaction of Australian high school students. The study, led by the Australian National University, looked at the impact of regular use of social media platforms on life satisfaction levels for students nationwide. It found most participants reported regularly using at least one social media platform, while nearly one in five young people actively post or share social media content at least once a day. Most major platforms have said that they would comply with the law. Video service provider TikTok said in a statement it has a range of methods for compliance including facial age estimation, credit card authorization, and government-approved identification. YouTube said it would make changes to how it operates in Australia under the ban, adding it is committed to finding "a better path forward to keep kids safe online". "We believe a more effective approach is one that empowers parents, rather than stripping away their choices, and allows kids to continue to derive the immense benefits of digital environments while protecting them from harm," it said in a statement. On Friday, message board website Reddit filed a lawsuit in Australia's highest court seeking to overturn the country's social media ban for children. The San Francisco-based firm, which ranks Australia among its biggest markets, said in the High Court filing that the ban should be declared invalid because it interfered with free political communication implied by the country's constitution. A spokesperson for Communications Minister Anika Wells, who was named as the defendant along with the Commonwealth of Australia, said the federal government was "on the side of Australian parents and kids, not platforms" and would "stand firm to protect young Australians from experiencing harm on social media", Reuters reported. Health Minister Mark Butler said Reddit filed the lawsuit to protect profits, not young people's right to political expression, and "we will fight this action every step of the way". "It is action we saw time and time again by Big Tobacco against tobacco control and we are seeing it now by some social media or Big Tech giants," Butler told reporters. One Reddit user said in a message-board post: "Our son can no longer access his apps — this has already had a profound effect … Normally he would be consumed with his phone, watching mind-numbing videos." In a radio interview a day after the ban took effect, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said online safety regulators from the eSafety Commissioner are looking at accounts in line with the new legislation. "So they'll look at what the impact is and then every month for six months they'll have to report," he said. Albanese also acknowledged the challenges implementation of the ban faces. Some people will get around it, just as chances are this Saturday night an under 18-year-old will get a beer in a pub somewhere. That doesn't mean that society doesn't set these rules, and these processes, in order to keep our youngest Australians safe," he said. We'll be sensible about it … we're talking of over a million accounts across platforms. We don't expect it to all be done perfectly, but we do expect the law provides for them to do their best endeavors." Julian Sefton-Green, a professor of new media education at Deakin University, said the ban was "inspiring legislation". It's designed to raise questions … It's designed to make families and young people talk in different ways," he said. So I think the significance of this law might be that it changes the power of these huge multinational global platforms, which are to a very great extent unaccountable, unregulated, and not owned by individual national countries, and it will raise a lot of questions about what individual countries can do in respect of these large multinational companies," Sefton-Green, who is also a member of the Australian eSafety Commissioner's advisory group that explores the implementation and outcomes of the nation's social media minimum age legal obligations, told China Daily. But Catherine Archer, a senior lecturer and researcher in social media at Edith Cowan University, said many academics feel children and teens were not consulted widely enough before the legislation was announced. The ban could cause anxiety and other mental issues for teens. They will face uncertainty over the school holidays on how to keep in contact with their friends and be entertained and informed on their regular platforms," Archer said via the Scimex science information portal. Teens are starting to think of ways around the ban, and the concern is that they may go to 'darker' places on the web. Messaging apps like WhatsApp won't be under the ban, so bullying may still occur," she said. The effectiveness is yet to be tested. Some adults are worried that it will lead to more data and surveillance, as age testing is not foolproof." “Some teenagers have expressed concern over the ban, according to the Australian Associated Press.据澳大利亚联合通讯社报道,一些青少年对这项禁令表示焦虑。It cited the example of Carlee Jade Clements, 15, an influencer from Melbourne with 37,000 Instagram followers who was still on the platform two days from the ban's effective date. Clements spent years building her Instagram presence, with her mother managing the account, but fears the new rules will impact her income and opportunities, AAP reported.该报道以15岁的墨尔本网红卡莉·杰德·克莱门茨(Carlee Jade Clements)为例,这位拥有3.7万Instagram粉丝的博主在禁令生效前两天仍活跃于该平台。据澳大利亚联合通讯社报道,克莱门茨耗费数年时间经营Instagram账号(由其母亲管理),但现在她担忧新规将影响她的收入与发展机会。Two teenagers representing an Australian libertarian group filed another suit last month against such a ban, according to Reuters.据路透社报道,两名代表澳大利亚自由意志主义团体的青少年上月就该禁令提起另一项诉讼。Tama Leaver, a professor of internet studies at Curtin University, said that no matter how people feel about the ban or social media, the feelings and responses of teens losing access to social media must be taken seriously.西澳大利亚珀斯科廷大学互联网研究教授塔玛·利弗(Tama Leaver)表示,无论人们对禁令或社交媒体持何种看法,青少年失去社交媒体使用权限所产生的情绪和反应都必须被严肃对待。"Parents and trusted adults need to listen to young people, to support them, and not dismiss what social media may have meant to them," Leaver said.塔玛·利弗(Tama Leaver)表示:“父母和可信赖的成年人需要倾听年轻人的心声,给予他们支持,不要轻视社交媒体对他们可能产生的意义。”The ban may well reduce some risks, he said, but "cyberbullying will still exist — messaging platforms are mostly exempt from the ban. Untrustworthy adults may still be able to find ways to reach and speak to teens across almost any platform."利弗表示,这项禁令或许能降低某些风险,但“网络欺凌仍将存在——即时通讯平台大多不受禁令约束。不可靠的成年人仍可能找到途径,在几乎任何平台上接触并与青少年对话。”"The job of helping young people learn to navigate the digital world safely is ongoing, and helping teens continue that conversation matters. Opening a door so young people have someone to turn to if they experience something challenging, confronting or terrible online, is vital."利弗表示:“帮助年轻人安全地探索数字世界是一项持续的工作,而引导青少年持续参与相关对话至关重要。为年轻人敞开大门,让他们在遭遇网络挑战、冲突或可怕经历时能获得支持,这具有关键意义。”Sabrina Caldwell, senior lecturer from the School of Systems and Computing at UNSW Canberra, said the new social media ban "won't work perfectly, but it can work imperfectly".新南威尔士大学堪培拉校区系统与计算学院高级讲师萨布丽娜·考德威尔(Sabrina Caldwell)表示,这项新的社交媒体禁令“不会完美奏效,但可以不完美地发挥作用”。"Some young people will find ways to circumvent the restrictions. However, even if they find a way to sneak online, they will not find most of their peers there, and this will detract significantly from the social media experience," Caldwell said.Caldwell表示:“一些年轻人会想方设法绕过限制。然而,即使他们找到偷偷上网的途径,也无法在网上找到大多数同龄人,这将极大削弱社交媒体体验。Bigger issues更重大的问题An Australian Broadcasting Corporation survey of more than 17,000 youngsters aged under 16 about the ban, found one-quarter would stop using social media.澳大利亚广播公司针对1.7万多名16岁以下青少年开展的禁令调查显示,四分之一受访者表示将停止使用社交媒体。Twenty-two percent of social media users said they were unsure if the ban would be effective, while 72 percent said they did not think it would work, according to the poll.调查显示,22%的社交媒体用户表示不确定禁令是否有效,而72%的用户认为禁令不会奏效。Associate Professor Katie Wood, an expert in clinical psychology at Swinburne University of Technology, questioned the ban's role in addressing the "clear negative impacts on mental health and well-being" from excessive social media.斯威本科技大学临床心理学专家凯蒂·伍德(Katie Wood)副教授质疑这项禁令能否有效应对过度使用社交媒体对心理健康和幸福感造成的“明显负面影响”。"While more research is needed to fully answer this question, parents will need support to work with their children to find ways to manage the ban," Wood said.伍德表示:“虽然需要更多研究才能彻底解答这个问题,但家长需要支持来协助孩子寻找应对禁令的方法。”"There is a risk that children will find other ways to access social platforms and become sneakier about it. Parents will need to be vigilant about this as well as any emotional and social fallout."伍德称:“会存在这样的风险:孩子们可能会另辟蹊径接触社交平台,且手段会变得更加隐蔽。家长不仅需要对此保持警惕,还需关注由此引发的情感与社交问题。”Tom Sulston, head of policy at Digital Rights Watch, a group that advocates protection of Australians' digital rights, told China Daily that despite the ban, bullies, abusers, and predators will not go away.数字权利观察组织政策主管汤姆·苏尔斯顿向《中国日报》表示,尽管实施了禁令,但欺凌者、施虐者和掠夺者不会就此消失。该组织致力于保护澳大利亚人的数字权利。"They will merely follow young people onto the platforms that they are allowed to use. Police have issued two formal warnings to the community after investigating allegations parents would cover the noses and mouths of crying children. A Herald investigation has revealed officers conducted more than 100 interviews. Virginia Courage says in one instance, a little boy was brought to her unconscious. "He wasn't breathing, and his father just threw him at me. I don't even know if he said anything, I just went into get-this-kid-breathing mode." The Hidden Link Between Anxiety & Dental Health: A New Perspective with Kenneth Leaver

In this compelling episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty sits down with Kenneth Leaver—a serial entrepreneur and founder of Reviv—to explore the unspoken connection between mental health, anxiety, and the physical body. From his intense journey through anxiety attacks during high-stress startup life in Vietnam to discovering how dental biomechanics and simple tools like mouth guards helped him regain control, Kenneth brings a bold, refreshing lens to mental wellness. If you've ever felt like anxiety is running your life—or you're tired of generic advice—this conversation will shift your perspective and offer practical tools. Tune in for powerful insights into burnout, physical health, and how high performers can stay grounded without sacrificing excellence. About the Guest – Kenneth Leaver:Kenneth Leaver is a global strategist and startup leader who has scaled six startups and now leads Reviv, a cutting-edge dental biomechanics brand. He also serves as a fractional COO at a venture-funded solar company. Kenneth brings a unique voice to the mental health conversation, blending hard-earned experience with physical innovation. Key Takeaways : Anxiety is not just emotional—it can be physical. Kenneth shares his story of severe anxiety triggered after dental work, revealing a surprising connection to jaw tension and alignment. A decade-long journey led to Revive, where Kenneth now helps thousands overcome anxiety using flat mouth guards worn during sleep—no therapy, just biomechanics. High performance ≠ burnout. Kenneth juggles multiple roles without anxiety or burnout by focusing on physical recovery, setting boundaries, and avoiding hustle culture. Know your limits. Kenneth reminds high achievers that pushing past physical or mental limits is counterproductive—"Boundaries are not a weakness; they're strategic.” The simplest tools matter. Nature, breath, quiet reflection, and even a $5 night guard can make profound changes in mental health. Understand your anxiety thresholds. A little pressure may boost performance, but excessive anxiety undermines confidence and cognitive function. Rich shares how he went from re-monumenting 3,000 PLS corners in Wisconsin to exploring Switzerland's multi-purpose cadastre system—because why not fix 99% of U.S. surveying problems with chocolate-fueled innovation?  Meanwhile, Matt talks about navigating his 24+ years in land surveying, helping a two-person firm grow into a thriving team, and how to keep your cool when dealing with complex right-of-way platting and snowmobiles.  Could Swiss-style cadastral systems save U.S. surveyors from a boundary crisis? Rich and Matt say ‘yes'—but it'll take more than chocolate and yodeling to get there! The group tackled bold questions: Should boundaries be classified as critical infrastructure? Are U.S. surveyors ready for a paradigm shift? And what would they say if they only had 60 seconds to pitch cadastral modernization to a governor? Send us a textWhen Jen Conrad first sponsored a child in Sierra Leone, she never imagined it would lead to adoption proceedings, heartbreaking visa denials, and eventually creating a groundbreaking program that's changing lives across the country. Her story reveals the hidden aftermath of institutional care that few people consider: what happens when orphaned children become adults? After traveling to Sierra Leone multiple times and forming deep bonds with two siblings, Jen and her husband pursued adoption. Despite gaining full legal guardianship in Sierra Leone's courts, their hopes were crushed when U.S. immigration repeatedly denied visas for their children. Suddenly faced with parenting teenagers across an ocean, Jen discovered an even greater problem - young adults aging out of orphanages had nowhere to go and no skills for independent living."There were more resources available for someone coming out of prison than a child transitioning from institutional care," Jen explains. Without basic life skills, budgeting knowledge, or mental health support, these young adults faced nearly impossible odds. When rumors spread that the transition program would be ending and children might be sent back to families unprepared to receive them, Jen knew she had to act. She worked with a local Sierra Leonean NGO, Child and Family Permanency Services, to create a program to assist care leavers suddenly facing life outside the institution with no supports.Named in honor of her mother who never gave up hope that her grandchildren would come home, Mamaw's House now provides comprehensive support to young adults leaving orphanage care. Managed as a program of an established organization that provides family strengthening, child reintegration and child protection services, Mamaw's House offers care leavers from Sierra Leone orphanages continuing education, connections to find basic housing and necessary services, mentorship from former care leavers, life skills training, and mental health services. Within its first year, it has already helped over 20 young adults. As Sierra Leone considers legislation to close orphanages entirely, Mamaw's House stands ready to expand its crucial work. "I think their stories are going to be very powerful," Jen says of the resilient young people finding their independence through the program. "I'm really encouraged that they're going to break the cycle and be part of this change." To learn ways you can help Mamaw's House and the Child and Family Permanency Services - go to https://cfpssl.org Maternal Health impacts child and family wellbeing, and is an indicator of societal wellbeing as well. Questions over how Australia's ban on under 16's using social media will be enforced. Social media sites will be slapped with fines, if they fail to take reasonable steps to follow the law — which kicks in at the end of the year. But a Professor of Internet Studies says there is no instruction on how to check for age. Curtin University's Tama Leaver told Heather du Plessis-Allan the easiest way would be for companies to request some kind of government-issued identification. “We've added an amendment so that platforms aren't allowed to ask for that because there were privacy concerns, so the exact technicality of how they're going to do age verification is very much up in the air.” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Have you ever shown up at a party feeling like you missed the dress code cue on the invitation? It's awful. You stand around talking to people, but the only thing on your mind is how uncomfortable you feel about the way you look. It's called the “spotlight effect,” when we feel like everyone's looking at us more than we actually are. Most of the time when we feel like everyone's watching very few actually are. They're paying too much attention to themselves to really care. When everyone's thinking about themselves no one is focused on you. But if the party you underdressed for is a wedding, people ARE looking at you, because it's a part of the experience. Everyone's looking at the couple, no doubt. But also the wedding party. And the parents as they walk down the aisle or do the first dance. Everyone's being primed to look at how people are dressed, even if they're not the star of the show. Which means as a vendor you have to show up looking like you fit in with ‘fit. I know, I know, I can hear many of you already. “But I have to be on my feet all day.” Yes, I agree - but you can't show up to a black tie event wearing padded sneakers.  So what's the criteria for wedding pros working at weddings?  As with most advice, it depends on the situation. I brought in Julian Leaver, luxury event planner and The Dapper Diplomat, to talk with me about grooming and attire on the wedding day. Because you don't want to book at higher price points and then lower your brand value by going too casual at the event.

I am experimenting again with a video this Sunday morning. (Podcast listeners can still get just the audio). Enjoy :)It was August 2018. Brexit Derangement Syndrome was only just starting to kick in, though the effort to derail it was underway. In comedy circles, I still was not talking very openly about having voted for Brexit—it would be another six months before I wrote 17 Million F Offs.I was doing a show at the Edinburgh Fringe, my financial gameshow. Now something happens to a performer at the Fringe. There are so many shows and so much competition that you will do (almost) anything to get publicity and draw attention to your show. The Fringe is a distillation of the entertainment industry; all the best things about it and the worst, all the highs and lows, seem to get magnified there. My PR man texted me and asked if I wanted to do a short spot about Brexit and comedy for Channel 4 News. I said yes. He said to go to the Pleasance at 5pm. They wanted someone who voted Leave.I met the film crew there, and the presenter— I have no idea what his name was—was a very nice, very charming young Englishman in his early 30s. University-educated, probably public school, made me feel very at ease. We found a little alcove, and our interview began.“In a comedy club, what do you say when heckled about Brexit?” he asked me.Now there are three types of comedy gigs. One is where the audience has come to see you; two is when they have come to see comedy (not necessarily you); and three, the worst type of gig, is when they neither come to see you nor comedy.Comedy clubs mostly come under category two (unless you are doing a solo show).I answered the question truthfully: “I MC a lot of nights. My job is to create a warm and friendly atmosphere. Audiences in comedy clubs are fairly mixed. So, I tend to avoid talking about Brexit, as you risk losing half the room, which is not good for the night.”“Sure, but what would you say if someone heckled you about Brexit?”“Well, I don't talk about it, so they don't.”“But if you did?”“But I don't.”This went round in circles for a bit. Then he changed his approach. “And if someone heckled you about voting Leave?”“Well, they don't because I don't talk about it.”“No, but what if they did?”“Well, they don't. As I say, in a regular comedy club, with a mixed crowd, if you come down very heavily on one side, you risk losing half the room. I'm the host. I don't like to do that. It might be different if I was doing a show specifically about it, but I'm not.”“Well, what if you were?”“Well, I'm not. And if I was doing a show about voting leave, I doubt many remainers would come.”“But what if they did?”It just kept going round and round in circles. I thought I was being reasonably articulate about the need to be diplomatic in a mixed room if you are the host, and I made the same point several times, each time phrasing it slightly differently, but he just was not having it. He kept coming back to this same question.“But if someone heckled you about voting Leave, what would you say?”Eventually, somewhat exasperated, I said, “Oh, I don't know. ‘Whatever, loser.' Something like that.”He smiled and quickly drew the interview to a close. We parted company with, apparently, good will expressed. I had spent probably five minutes explaining the need to be diplomatic and a microsecond with that last line.Later that day, I watched the clip from Channel 4 News. Guess which part of the interview they used?“Leaver comedian calls people who voted Remain losers,” ran the headline of the vid on the Channel 4 site, or some such (I can't find the vid now to quote it accurately). The only clip from the interview they used was me saying, “Whatever, loser,” even though it was totally misrepresentative of the rest of the interview. Then in the comments beneath, I remember reading a load of remarks along the lines of, “Well, how is that funny?”, “Remind me to never go and see that guy,” “Leavers just aren't funny,” and so on.I won't say I was shocked by how disingenuous the process was, but I was shaking my head wearily. I explained it to myself along the lines that he had gone into the interview wanting a certain clip that he could use to illustrate a story he had already formed in his head. He would not stop until he got that clip, and he had no interest in anything else I said. I suppose that's a kind way of looking at it—a trap I often fall into. On the other hand, he was a lying cheat, and the clip he showed of me was completely misrepresentative. It could have been quite damaging to me reputationally, but fortunately, the clip was so short, and not that many people will have watched it.If nothing else, it showed me just how untruthful the news is.You really cannot trust it. No wonder so many have lost faith. When you have a reporter brimming with ambition (the same ruthless ambition that actors, singers, comedians, and other media stars have), the most important thing is their career. Everything else, including the truth, is subordinate to that. Sometimes there is a happy coincidence: the reporter boosts his career by breaking some amazing truth. But given a choice between the two, career usually wins. Such is the nature of the ambition of many in the media.Even with everything I know now, I still watch a news story and am taken in by it. It's only when you were actually there that you see just how misrepresentative it can be.Don't trust the news. It lies.I've now just remembered another story. It was during the 1990 World Cup when the English fans got into scuffles with Dutch fans just before the England-Holland game in Cagliari. Evil, terrible hooligans causing trouble, ran all the headlines, alongside lots of footage of Italian police with riot gear, firing off tear gas, and all the rest of it. I was there. I'm bilingual. I saw the whole thing. The Italian police directed tens of thousands of English straight into tens of thousands of Dutch in the narrow lanes of the historical centre—the police messed up badly. They then panicked and started firing off tear gas. The news told a completely different story.I was 20 at the time. I think that was my first taste of the BS.Thank you very much for reading this and for being a subscriber. Today, I bring in Julian Leaver, the Dapper Diplomat and owner of Julian Leaver Events. Julian was on the podcast a few months ago for episode 123 to talk about the power of a strong personal brand. It was one of the most popular podcasts we've done over the past year, which got me thinking about how to dive even deeper into the knowledge he can share with the audience. So I'm bringing him in quarterly, now, to talk about important topics like personal brand, grooming and attire, etiquette, communication, client experience, and how to handle difficult situations.  I like his no-nonsense approach, and self-effacing take on what it means to work with luxury clients and vendors. Today's discussion is about networking, because it's a) crucial for long-term success in the wedding industry, and b) a challenge for many, maybe even most people in the audience. Even if you think you're doing a great job at networking, it's quite possible - maybe even likely - that you're messing it up and don't even know it. I've learned a ton from Julian over the years. I know you will too.

Religious communities must embrace diversity and support LGBTQIA+ individuals. The impact of discrimination on mental health is too great to ignore. Our anonymous guest from Canada takes us on her journey to finding her freedom and support outside the toxic culture of the PBCC. Craig and Ben join in our discussion of their shared experiences leaving the PBCC due to the unaccepting views on anyone associated in this community. (Jenny) reads her letter of goodbye to her parents and we discuss the lack of education and understanding about sex and homosexuality in these communities that has led to rampant misconceptions, fixation on sexual relationships, and deep-seated guilt and shame. The podcast also revealed the struggles faced by teachers within these communities. They feared repercussions for speaking out against racism and homophobia, leading to a high turnover of teachers. The impact of a fear-based stance on the entire community is truly sobering. LGBTQ+ individuals deserve acceptance and understanding, not discrimination and fear. It's time to create supportive, inclusive environments and find ways to help them understand that you cannot pray the gay away! Discover the history and paranormal encounters of The Old Vicarage Hotel in Bridgwater with guest and owner Candida Leaver. Featured in Help My House Is Haunted Season 4, the Hotel is full of charm and character as well as several locations that boast of paranormal activity. "I was staying in Room 5 alone when someone clearly sat on the end of the bed. I didn't feel scared, just curious." Guest Feedback "Whilst walking down the stairs in the main building I was tapped firmly on the shoulder." Guest Feedback My Special Guest is Candida Leaver Candida Leaver purchased The Old Vicarage Hotel in the heart of Bridgwater in 2019 with her husband Peter. Before taking on The Old Vicarage, they owned The Bower Inn. Having fallen in love with the Hotel the couple have lovingly spent time and resources to renovate the Hotel to make it an inviting and cosy place to visit for its beautiful garden, delicious food and luxurious facilities. The History of The Old Vicarage Hotel St Mary Street in Bridgwater contains a line of fourteenth century cottages including the Old Vicarage Hotel which was given in the sixteenth century by Edward de Chedzoy to be used as a vicarage. The Old Vicarage, which dates back to 1327, has a south facing patio and garden within its central courtyard, which is accessed by an ancient archway, once used by horses and carriages. Originally built of wattle and daub, The Old Vicarage is certainly the oldest domestic premises in the town, only the church itself dating back any further.  As a one-time coaching house, it continued life as the Steynings Tea Rooms before reverting to its Old Vicarage title. The Hotel is a charming building with some wonderful historical links to Bridgwater's past, including reputably being the place Judge Jeffreys stayed and, also, providing lodgings for Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who designed the train station and a bridge in the town. Ghostly goings-on at The Old VicarageThe Old Vicarage Hotel, located in Somerset, has a diverse history of paranormal activity. This quaint and atmospheric location has been the site of numerous ghost sightings and unexplained phenomena such as reports of unexplained footsteps, phantom women, ghostly pushes and objects being moved. Candy takes us through some of these experiences and reports from guests and staff as well as exploring their connections with the local history. With first hand accounts from staff and guests you can explore the ghostly goings-on for yourself. In this episode, you will be able to: Delve into the captivating past of The Old Vicarage Hotel and its connection with the Church opposite as well as historical figures such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
