Getting around the city will be even more sustainable this Earth Day as Lime announces the expansion of its shared e-scooter system to downtown Vancouver just in time for spring. The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) confirmed a person with the same name was charged on April 15 in connection with the Vancouver incident and appeared in court that same day. He was released on Wednesday. An online bid to attracting US visitors to Nanaimo is gaining major traction! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This is the first episode of Eminent Americans where I've had the pleasure of talking to both the subject of a published profile and the profile writer at the same time. Kevin LaTorre, a return guest on the show, recently wrote “The 6,069 Fictions of Justin Smith-Ruiu,” a long piece about philosopher and metafictionist Justin Smith-Ruiu. Or maybe Justin wrote it himself, appropriating Kevin's name and likeness as another one of his authorial alter-egos. Maybe “Kevin” doesn't even exist. I mean, I think he does, since I've talked to him before on zoom, and perused his digital profile, but what if he's just a gifted improviser who was hired by Justin to play Kevin on my podcast? What if the plan all along was to create a real-seeming “Kevin LaTorre” persona, with a fully fleshed out online profile, in order to add yet another layer of semi-unreality to the many layers of the Hinternet, Justin's vast and sprawling endeavor. This seems unlikely, given that “Kevin” and I don't even talk about Justin in our first podcast interview, but who knows? If you're going to create a plausible “Kevin LaTorre” in the world, then you need to have him doing plausibly Kevin LaTorre-esque things, like coming on my podcast to discuss his “faith,” the essayist “Jia Tolentino,” and “climate change.”Anyhoo — such are the questions one begins to ask oneself after one has spent more than a certain amount of time in Justin's world. The conversation, which I really enjoyed, is primarily about Justin and his Hinternet project. We also talk about the challenges that Kevin faced in profiling Justin, Justin's disillusionment with academia, and Justin's scooter accident of a few years ago, which marked a profound break in his life and career. And much, much more.Hinternet posts we discuss include (descriptors and parentheticals from Kevin)* His re-version story* His past audio-mixing history* This metafiction: "The Storyteller"* His case against euthanasia (by far, the most technoskeptic take I've read from him)* His case for pacifism (by far the most dissident-left stance he has, I think -- antiwar in a pro-war Democratic party)* His reflection on his post-2020 developments (where he uses the "old-time religion" of love which sums up plenty about him lately)The show notes, according to ChatGPT:

April Clark is a writer and comedian based out of Los Angeles. After dropping out of graduate school, April formed the trans comedy duo Girl God with Grace Freud. The duo has since grown wildly in popularity, which has helped to justify April's decision re: the grad school thing. That's not to say the journey was easy, though. The duo had to jump through hoops just like any other comedy duo — and they successfully did jump through such hoops. You can catch their podcast any time you're free, and if you're in Los Angeles you can likely catch them live. If you're not in Los Angeles, there's a good chance they will be performing live comedy at a theatre in your hometown sometime in the near future. New Zealand would have to be the undisputed health and safety champion of the world. Which is why I've always found it weird that we're quite happy for any Tom, Dick or Harry with a smartphone to jump on one of those rental e-scooters and go for it. Lime Scooters. Flamingo scooters. You know the ones I'm talking about. Right now, you can find one of those things, get your phone out, scan the code on the scooter, and you're away laughing. No previous experience required. No helmet required. There's not even a speed limit enforced. And you can ride anywhere - on the road, on footpaths. Anywhere and everywhere. The reason you can do that is that is because you don't have to have a licence to use one of these things. They also don't have to be registered to anyone. Which is why they don't have number plates. But that could be all about to change because Waka Kotahi needs to decide in the next month or so whether to keep things operating like this or not. At the moment, these e-scooters aren't subject to certain road rules. That's because, in 2018, there was a declaration made or given to enable companies like Lime and Flamingo and all the others to set-up shop here in New Zealand. If someone needed a licence, for example, it would defeat the purpose of these things - which is to provide a means of transport pretty much for anyone who can keep their balance. If you start requiring people to have licences and things - well, forget it. But, five years down the track, Waka Kotahi now needs to decide if it's going to renew that exemption declaration or not. And, if it doesn't, then we can effectively kiss goodbye to anywhere, anytime rental e-scooters in New Zealand. When these things first arrived on the scene, I thought they were great because they gave the feel of being a modern, 21st-century outfit didn't they? Well, that's how I felt about them at the time. There was certainly something cool about them. But I think the novelty has worn-off. That could be because more of us seem to be open to using public transport like buses. Or maybe it's because Uber is much more mainstream now than it was even just five years ago. The other thing too, is that most of us have probably felt a bit at-risk from some of the idiots who use these Lime Scooters and Flamingo Scooters. Most likely, night-time is the most risky time. But I could walk out of our building at lunchtime today and there'd be someone screaming down the street on the footpath. Not giving two hoots about me or anyone else out on the street. Or it might not even be just one person. You see two people on the same scooter, don't you? And they're actually the ones I'm most weary of because it's not like you've got two sets of eyes looking out for you. No. They're focussed on having a laugh. Until it goes all pear-shaped. Which has well-and-truly happened since these things came to New Zealand. It's been reported that thousands of people are injured every year using these things. Tragically, there have been deaths, as well. Here are some numbers for you. Between October 2018 and October last year, there was $30 million worth of ACC claims for e-scooter injuries. These included rental scooters and privately-owned scooters. The number of claims was just over 10,500. And, in the first year since e-scooters were exempt from some of the road rules that apply to other vehicles, surgeons in Auckland operated on more e-scooter riders than motorbike riders. And the e-scooter riders they were treating were turning up with the types of traumatic injuries you'd normally see in people involved in car crashes. Chances are things have improved a bit on that front. But who knows. Either way, Waka Kotahi has a decision to make. And needs to make it pretty soon. Because, come the end of September, if the road rules exemption continues then so will the Lime Scooters. But, if it decides not to extend the exemption, then the scooters will be gone. And I wouldn't be upset about that. Because, as I said before, the novelty has gone for me and I think they've had their day. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

First there were Lime Scooters, now there are Lime Mopeds After a successful launch in Washington DC, Lime is starting the rollout of electric mopeds in New York City. They are bright green, parked on the street, and ready to ride with just a click of an app. They work just like a Lime Scooter charging an unlock fee plus a ride per minute fee. There is a helmet locked in the back for riders to wear - and you need to submit a photo of yourself wearing the helmet before you can start. When you sign up for the service you also need to take a rider safety course and submit your drivers license for verification. Electric mopeds are already super popular in NYC. They launched a couple of years ago by a startup called Revel. Lime will be the second provider. Microsoft Word is changing its default font But to what.. you can help decide.
