Varför försonas med en våldsverkare som rånar oss? När det gäller döden står Elisabeth Hjorth står inte på samma sida som historiens vise mäns. Lyssna på alla avsnitt i Sveriges Radio Play. Åsikter som uttrycks är skribentens egna.När jag studerade teologi cirkulerade ett skämt mellan de blivande prästerna, om en begravningsannons för någon som blivit åttiofem år. Efter de sörjandes namn i annonsen stod ett enda ord: Varför? Åttiofem år och vad hände med devisen good enough? Sedan länge förskonat från krig, svält och hög barnadödlighet överskrider medellivslängden i Sverige vissa andra länders med mer än trettio år. Samtidigt finns det många som vill förlänga livet ytterligare. Inom gerovetenskapen, eller åldersforskningen, studeras olika sätt att genom levnadsvanor och på medicinteknisk väg skjuta fram såväl åldrande som död. Att acceptera sin utmätta tid på jorden förespråkade redan Lucretius. I dikten ”Dödsfruktan är dårskap” listar han ett antal argument till dödens favör som 2000 år senare känns igen. Inklusive att det blir tråkigt att leva för länge och att jorden riskerar att bli överbefolkad om ingen dör. Myter och berättelser, från Gilgamesh till Harry Potter, understryker budskapet. Memento mori, kom ihåg att du ska dö. Godta det, annars riskerar du att förvandlas till en eländig Gollum på botten av världen. En som inte hade skrattat åt de anhörigas ”varför?” är filosofen Patrick Linden, som diskuterar den filosofiska frågan om döden som sådan. Är döden en meningsfull del av livet eller ett ont som ska bekämpas? Lindens bok Mot döden är en vidräkning med dödens alla försvarare, dit de flesta av historiens stora tänkare räknas. Sokrates, Buddha, Marcus Aurelius, alla förespråkade de att acceptera och bejaka slutet. Lindens samtida kollega Martin Hägglund hävdar att vi endast genom att erkänna döden kan känna att livet står på spel. Utan risken att förlora skulle vi inte riktigt bry oss, varken om oss själva eller dem vi älskar. Men det är precis tvärtom, menar Linden, så länge vi har något vackert att förlora har vi all anledning att frukta och motarbeta döden. Till skillnad från Linden kan jag inte föreställa mig ett globalt samförstånd kring visionen om evig ungdom. Mer realistiskt är ett cyniskt krig om resurser som redan är orättvist fördelade. Däremot sympatiserar jag med passionen, den frenesi med vilken Linden attackerar sin ärkefiende. Han vägrar försonas med döden. Trots att han vet att det betraktas som barnsligt, egoistiskt och ofilosofiskt. Jag misstänker att han tillhör dem av oss som tänker på döden varje dag och sannerligen inte behöver påminnas en extra gång. För det är något med döden som snarare får det att brinna bakom ögonen än att klokt nicka i takt med historiens vise män. Döden är ju en våldsverkare. Döden är ett rån och en skymf mot allt levande. Varför all denna kärlek, spirande omsorg, innerliga närhet till det som ändå ska ryckas bort? Det verkar inte riktigt klokt. Stjärnhimlen eller havet eller linjerna i den älskades ansikte blir väl inte vackrare för att döden finns? Min väns far är mycket sjuk. Jag möter henne under striderna om vårdbehoven, i sorgearbetet som redan pågår. Frustrationen över att alla insatser riktas mot kroppens behov fast själen fortfarande har sin längtan. Döendets brutalitet och skuggan av det förestående. Sedan kommer döden och med den sorgen som ingen egentligen kan förbereda sig på. En utomstående måste träda mycket försiktigt runt detta tomrum, av respekt för kärleken och för det oersättliga ljus som försvunnit. Att citera någon av dödens alla försvarare vore hemskt. Om inte ett enda av de stora tänkarnas råd fungerar i situationen, vad har de då för legitimitet? Författarna har ibland en mer antagonistisk relation till döden än filosoferna. Sara Lidman, till exempel, ville inte höra talas om dödens hemlighetsfulla mening eller något inneboende gott i smärtan. Det är livet samman med en levande älskad som är det goda, skriver hon. Mot alternativet måste man protestera. ”Jag har inte kunnat ta mig an något annat än döden och försvaret mot döden”, sa författaren Birgitta Trotzig i ett tal och sällade sig till dödens fiender. Ibland påstås att det finns en utbredd ”beröringsskräck inför döden” i samtiden. Det är en märklig anklagelse. Vem blir inte skräckslagen när döden snuddar vid en? Enligt Linden är de som känner sig längst från döden också de som har lättast att acceptera den. Det är naturligt att känna sig odödlig, skrev Roland Barthes, tills man en dag inte gör det. Tills man, som han själv, en dag kliver ut i gatan och blir överraskad av en tvättbil som på ett ögonblick förvandlar livet till ett farväl.Det finns författare som inte är så upproriska mot döden. Niklas Rådström skriver vackert i dödens absoluta närhet, om döden som en försynt men nitisk bibliotekarie. Också inför en sådan erfarenhet går det bara att böja sig, förundrat. En mjuk tilltro som bebor en människa som slutit fred med döden. Min väns far levde sitt hela liv i kyrkan, han var politiskt engagerad, filosofiskt bevandrad. Ändå ansåg han att döden var fullkomligt värdelös, ett oskick. Det är logiskt, säger jag till min vän. Hatet mot döden är en stor poäng med kristendomen. ”Du död, var är din seger, var är din udd?” som det försmädligt står i första Korinthierbrevet. Denna fiendskap riskerar att förlora sin radikalitet om religionen blott syftar till att terapeutiskt hantera och acceptera dödens faktum. I en tid då de svåraste erfarenheterna ska bemästras så att livet kan fortlöpa smidigt för alla har det inte blivit mindre angeläget att bespotta döden sedan den tidiga kristendomen. Tvärtom. Uppståndelse och återförening är för den som inte kan acceptera livets slutliga nederlag. Som finner tanken att bottenlöst lidande skulle uppvägas av stunder av nåd eller hela decennier av oförtjänt välmåga alltför bisarr. För döden är djupt orättvis; den slår hårdast mot den fattiga, osynliggjorda och tystade. Att tro på ett liv före döden måste innebära att bekämpa dödens orättvisa utfall. Att också tro på ett liv efter är väl inget annat än att vid maktlöshetens gräns hoppas på det oerhörda, att döden till sist blir plundrad på sitt byte. Säkert kan livet bli lättare för någon som kontemplerar dödens nödvändighet. Men att acceptera existentiell ensamhet, sin otillräcklighet eller sårbarhet är något annat än att böja sig för döden själv. Viktigare än att lära sig dö rätt är kanske att lära sig varsamhet kring förlustens erfarenhet, att inte dra sig undan eller förminska de sår som döden orsakar de levande. Min väns far godtog aldrig döden och det tröstar mig på något sätt att han höll ut i denna oförsonlighet. När vi, om Gud vill, ses på den andra sidan ska jag säga det till honom. He was known for his pen name as the midwife "Mrs. Mary Midnight."  The back half of Christopher's life was spent in madhouses or prisons. He wrote his long religious poem, Jubilate Agno (Rejoice in the Lamb), in a debtor's prison. It includes the words, For the flowers are great blessings. For there is a language of flowers. For the flowers are peculiarly the poetry of Christ. In this same poem, Christopher praises his beloved cat Jeoffry. The Jeoffry verses inspired Oliver Soden's whimsical biography of Jeoffry, which debuted in April 2021 to the delight of cat lovers everywhere.  In 1752, Christopher published The Hop-Garden, a long poem of 733 lines about a hop garden that tells the reader how to cultivate hops. The poem is part personal history and part instruction.  In The Hop-Garden, Christopher mentioned the river that ran past his childhood garden, and he dedicated the second half of the poem to his dear friend Theophilus Wheeler. Christopher was in the middle of writing The Hop-Garden when Theophilus died during his sophomore year at Christ College.  After The Hop-Garden was published, Christopher's friend, Samuel Johnson, said the poem was proof that, one could say a great deal about cabbage. In the poem, when a storm threatens the harvest, Christopher writes, Haste then, ye peasants; pull the poles, the hops; Where are the bins? Run, run, ye nimble maids, Move ev'ry muscle, ev'ry nerve extend, To save our crop from ruin, and ourselves. Christopher Smart died in debtor's prison in London in 1771, at 49.   1897 Death of David Burke, English plant collect and gardener. The Veitch nurseries became obsessed with the painting of a Pitcher-plant (Nepenthes Northiana) by Marianne North. After Marianne's death, Veitch sent David on his first collecting trip with Charles Curtis to bring back specimens of the North Pitcher plant. During the trip, David discovered the beautiful Leea amabilis, which is now a popular tropical houseplant that features dark, jagged-shaped leaves with have white color along the midrib. David continued to travel extensively for James Veitch & Sons, and he collected plants in British Guiana, Burma, and Colombia. David was honored with the naming of a pitcher plant he discovered called Nepenthes Burkei.  In the Philippines, David also collected Phalaenipsis stuartiana. He found the orchid growing abundantly along the coastline, where it thrived being sprayed by the ocean. The Veitch firm praised Burke's writing. This traveller (Burke) crossed a greater area of the earth's surface and covered more miles in search of plants than any other Veitchian collector, with the possible exception of the two brothers William and Thomas Lobb. The writer Sue Shephard wrote a biography of the Veitch family, and in it, she described David as Veitch's strangest, longest–serving and most adventurous orchid collector. James Veitch once remarked,  Burke was one of those curious natures who live more or less with natives as a native, and apparently, prefer[ed] this mode of existance. In 1896, David left on what was to be his final voyage. He died of cholera on Ambon island.   1912 Birth of Elsie Elizabeth Esterhuysen, South African botanist. Elsie's been described as the most outstanding collector of South African Flora. She collected over 36,000 herbarium species. A botanist at the Bolus Herbariumin Cape Town, Elsie was humble, and she would never publish the results of her work under her own name. After Elsie died, over 200 people gathered at her memorial, which featured three tributes from her botanist family. The botanist John Rourke recalled, It's an astonishing fact that for the first 18 years of her employment she received no proper salary and was paid out of petty cash at a rate not much better than a laborer. She did not collect randomly; Elsie was above all an intelligent collector, seeking range extensions, local variants, or even new species, filling voids in the Bolus Herbarium's records, often returning months later to collect seeds or fruits that were of diagnostic importance. […] Always self-deprecating, one of her favorite comments was ‘I'm only filling in gaps'.   The botanist Peter Linder said, She was what I thought a botanist was supposed to be. She was in the mountains every weekend, and came back with big black plastic bags full of plants, that she sorted and passed to Gert Syster to press.  Elsie taught me that each species has an essence, a character—that it liked some habitats but not others and that it flowered at a particular time.  ...She was interested in the plants themselves—she cared about them.   The botanist Ted Oliver remembered, Her mode of transport was the bicycle (we have her latest model here today). She rode to the University of Cape Town up that dreadful steep road every day for a lifetime, come sunshine or rain, heat or cold. Now one knows why she was so fit and could outstrip any poor unsuspecting younger botanist in the mountains! Every day she would come up and park her bicycle behind the Bolus Herbarium building and then often jump through the window in the preparation section rather than walk all the way around to the front door.   Today there are 56 plant species and two genera named for Elsie Esterhuysen.   Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation The Ladies' Village Improvement Society Cookbook by Florence Fabricant This book came out in 2020, and the subtitle is Eating and Entertaining in East Hampton. Well, this is another book that I wish had debuted before the pandemic because I think it would have been so much more popular had it come out, say, in 2018. Nonetheless, it's not too late to discover this fabulous cookbook. This is a cookbook for all seasons, but I think the cover just screams summer and eating outside in your garden. So if you're going to get this book, now is the time. Martha Stewart wrote the forward to this cookbook, and I wanted to share just a bit of what she talks about here because she's introducing us to the LVIS, or the Ladies Village Improvement Society. This group of women has done so much to make sure that the natural beauty of the Hamptons stays intact, and Martha alludes to adhere in this forward. She writes, I bought my home on Lily Pond Lane almost thirty years ago. Much has changed in Easthampton since then. Many new houses have been built, and countless new stores have opened on Main Street and Newton Lane. The summer populations have swelled, and the beaches have become more crowded. But some things have remained the same. The giant Elm trees that tower over the highway leading into town are still green and stately. The roadsides are still planted with lovely Maples and Lindens, offering shady avenues and streets on which to walk or bicycle. The scenic Village Green and its iconic pond populated by pairs of plump swans are still the backdrop for many thousands of photographs throughout the year. And the Ladies Village Improvement Society can claim bragging rights for the glory of this scenery. There is no better time to be in East Hampton than in mid-summer when the trees are leafed out, the roses are blooming, and the ocean is beautiful. And then there are the farmer's markets and the farm stands displaying their freshly harvested vegetables. It's a beautiful sight to see. And as Martha indicated, this volunteer organization, the Ladies Village Improvement Society, has done a lot to ensure that the Hamptons retain their natural charm. Now a lot of these women are gardeners and cooks. So you can imagine the beautiful recipes -the over 100 recipes - in this fabulous cookbook, and many of them are garden to table. The other thing that's really fun about this book is that the Hamptons is all about entertaining. And so, these women are sharing their go-to recipes for all kinds of gatherings - whether you're talking about dinner after a movie or lunch by the pool - whatever the occasion, there are delightful suggestions here. There's a Fettuccine recipe that's got Asparagus and Blue Cheese. There's a fabulous Bittersweet Chocolate Pound Cake. Bonnie Reiff-Smith shared her recipe for Perfection Pork Chops. There's an excellent Zucchini Sausage Quiche - another great recipe for using your zucchini. There's Moroccan Carrot Salad and a fabulous Sunflower Seed Salad along with Whole Roasted Cauliflower - that's fantastic as well. Anyway, I could go on and on. This beautiful cookbook is so fun. This book is 256 pages of more than 100 recipes for food and drink, and it's all put together in 20 different menus with directions on how to make any of your gatherings extra special. And it really is a beautiful cookbook for summer - and the price is right, too. The garden was established to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of desegregation at the college. Student Government President Lindsay Richardson read a poem by USC Poet Nikky Finney called The Irresistible Ones, which is inscribed on a granite plaque in the garden and reads, THE IRRESISTIBLE ONES ROBERT ANDERSON, HENRIE MONTEITH, JAMES SOLOMON They arrive knocking at Osborne's great garnet door.  They want to study mathematics, join the debate team, and sing in the choir.  They are three in a sea of six thousand.  With each step they pole vault shards of doubt, sticks of dynamite, and stubborn hate mail.  With them arrives the bright peppermint of change.  The new laws of the new day can no longer resist these three irresistible ones, in a sea of six thousand, stepping through a door now garnet and black.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

Well sometimes a show goes completely different then you planned. Once we get Big B's audio fixed we begin the cross examination. You see our junior intern Scotty had made a post on social media, regarding the new metaverse. He has been involved in an online world called second life. Big B and DK tried relentlessly to get straight answers out of Scotty. The chat was divided and became heated at times. This was recorded in front of a very large Facebook, YouTube and online radio audience. I have seen the articles and such about the metaverse and what is has to offer. I want to offer a glimpse of what an online world can offer for artists and those who might need a friendly jumping in point. I have access to an amazing sim in second life and want to show what she has done. If you want to see it and experience what a virtual world can offer please let me know. Aan tafel zitten Gert-Jaap Hoekman, Frénk van der Linden en Spraakmaker  Van der Lindens mediamoment gaat over een nieuwe functie die Twitter aan het testen is. Wat houdt die in en zitten we erop te wachten? Hij heeft het over het paradox van waarschuwingslampen. Verwacht hij dat deze nieuwe functie doeltreffend is? En hoe heeft Nu.nl hier verslag van gedaan?   Het mediamoment van Hoekman gaat over de Britse band Bad Nerves, die wil touren door Europa maar gék wordt van de Brexitregels. Ze stonden gisteren nog in Paradiso, maar een echte tour wordt lastig. Waar lopen zij tegen aan? Waarom is hier weinig aandacht voor in de berichtgeving? Linden: “Het is hartstikke groot en een belangrijke ontwikkeling, maar er waren een paar dingen die elkaar verdrongen afgelopen jaar” Verder hebben we het over een rapport van het AD over de kinderopvangtoeslag. Rechters zijn uiterst kritisch op de manier waarop ze zijn omgegaan met ouders die in de problemen kwamen door dat kinderopvangtoeslag. Dat staat in een rapport dat het AD - een week voor de officiële verschijningsdatum - in handen heeft. NU.nl heeft een bericht gepubliceerd waarin de publicatie van het AD wordt geciteerd. Waarom is daartoe besloten? Is het niet zelf in handen hebben van het rapport normaal gesproken geen reden om niet tot publicatie over te gaan? Waarom lekken zulke documenten vaker uit? Wie heeft het gelekt en vooral waarom zou je dat doen?  De Raad voor de Rechtspraak zegt tegen het AD dat het rapport eind volgende week officieel verschijnt en wil tot die tijd niet inhoudelijk reageren. Is het dan moeilijk als journalisten hierover te berichten? Vaak wordt direct gewezen naar de toeslagenaffaire als vergelijking dat er misstanden zijn. Kan die vergelijking getrokken worden en is het goed dat dat veel gebeurt? Linden: “Je holt zo'n affaire helemaal uit” En Google gaat geen advertenties meer plaatsen bij websites waar desinformatie over het klimaat getoond wordt. Het nieuwe beleid geldt zowel voor de zoekmachine als voor videoplatform YouTube, zo meldt het bedrijf. Het platform hoopt zo te voorkomen dat mensen geld verdienen met content die "de oorzaken van klimaatverandering verkeerd weergeeft”. Hoekman: “Ik vind het wat laat, dat zij dit doen”. Is dit alsnog een hoopvolle ontwikkeling? Is er een duidelijke grens wat wel en niet fake news is? Hoe kijken onze Mediaforumleden hiernaar? Hoekman: “Het stemt me hoopvol dat een platform zijn verantwoordelijkheid neemt”
