Todd Rogers, PhD, wrote an editorial piece for CNN called “Why is No One Reading Your Coronavirus Emails,” and we can’t really get it out of our heads. Todd is a professor of public policy at Harvard University and chief scientist at EveryDay Labs, a behavioral science company focused on parent communication in education. We instantly appreciated that he’s looking at the problem of too damn many coronavirus emails through a scholarly, and behavioral, lens.In this episode, we groove on the behavioral aspects of these emails: the senders and the receivers. We see retailers succumbing to herd mentality, fear of missing out (FOMO), and generally irrelevant communication without so much as batting an eye.Our inboxes are full. Our cognitive processing stretched thin. And retailers, in many cases, are failing to effectively communicate WIIFM (what’s in it for me). That said, we have examples of companies who are doing things right and we are hopeful that this is a teachable moment.Links“Why no one is reading your coronavirus e-mails”: https://edition.cnn.com/2020/03/13/opinions/coronavirus-emails-effective-messaging-rogers/index.htmlThe Dakota Jazz Club: https://www.dakotacooks.com/Nachito Herrara: http://nachitoherrera.com/
While many Americans have either personally attended or know alumni of all-boys or all-girls high schools, very few have met graduates of women’s colleges. Is a single-gendered college experience an outdated concept or a reflection of modern sensibilities? Amy and Mike invited Director of US Admission at Mount Holyoke College Catarina Costa to describe the many benefits of attending a women's college. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What is the history of women’s colleges, and who are the “Seven Sisters”? What is different or unique about attending a women's college? What distinctive academic opportunities do women's colleges offer? What are the specific benefits of attending a women's college? What kind of student should consider attending a women’s college? MEET OUR GUEST Catarina Costa is the Director of US Admission at Mount Holyoke College and has been a member of its admission team since 2006. Catarina has done recruitment travel to many regions of the country and has had a varied portfolio throughout her nearly fourteen years at Mount Holyoke, which includes special event management, selection and training of the senior fellows and tour guides, and coordination of the office’s diversity outreach efforts. She currently leads the domestic office operations, overseeing the first-year application reading and selection process and the campus visit experience. Catarina has a Masters degree in Counseling and Personnel Services from Fordham University, where she also completed doctoral studies in Counseling Psychology before embarking on a career change. In the early aughts, Catarina was doing career and transfer counseling for CUNY in NYC and moved to the Five College area looking for opportunities on the proverbial “other side of the desk.” She found college admissions and Mount Holyoke--and they both stole her heart! Catarina is passionate about issues of social justice and is an advocate in the areas of diversity and inclusion efforts on campus. Find Catarina at https://www.mtholyoke.edu/admission. "When you turn your back on reality you lose the ability to manipulate reality. One would think that is self-evident. I didn't go into this to not try to find the truth." -- James Flynn* Today it is an honor to have Dr. James Flynn on the podcast. Dr. Flynn is Professor Emeritus at the University of Otago and recipient of the University’s Gold Medal for Distinguished Career Research. In 2007, the International Society for Intelligence Research named him its Distinguished Contributor. His TED talk on cognitive and moral progress has received over 3.5 million visits. His long list of books include Are We Getting Smarter?, What is Intelligence?, Where Have All the Liberals Gone?, Fate and Philosophy, How to Improve Your Mind, and most recently, Does Your Family Make You Smarter?: Nature, Nurture, and Human Autonomy. In this episode we cover a wide range of topics relating to intelligence and its determinants, including: Flynn’s attempts to clarify intelligence and its causes The g factor, and what gives rise to it The validity of multiple intelligences theory Intergenerational trends (the “Flynn effect”) vs. Within-generation trends The “social multiplier” model of intergenerational trends in intelligence Individual multipliers vs. social multipliers The multiple causes of black-white differences in IQ Charley Murray and the meritocracy thesis Transcending the politics of intelligence research The dangers of suppressing ideas and research The 20% wiggle room of autonomy on IQ tests The difference between internal and external environment The impact of having a “family handicap” on SAT scores What we can learn from astronomy about human intelligence Toward a meta-theory of intelligence Toward a more humane society Links Why our IQ levels are higher than our grandparents [TED Talk] Reflection about intelligence over 40 years Heritability Estimates Versus Large Environmental Effects”: The IQ Paradox Resolved The g beyond Spearman’s g: Flynn’s paradoxes resolved using four exploratory meta-analyses IQ Bashing, Breadkdancing, the Flynn Effect, and Genes Men, Women, and IQ: Setting the Record Straight The Flynn Effect and IQ Disparities Among Races, Ethnicities, and Nations: Are There Common Links? If not, why not.” https://twitter.com/robkhenderson/status/1027707019317403650 Flynn: No, they would just be better adapted in their ability to meet educational demands. 2. “Are you concerned with the growing misuse of genetic causal fallacies in heritability research, and what can be done to make sure that researchers do not assert implications that are not supported by the data? Is this a question of education?” https://twitter.com/NathanH90714587/status/1027690457504002048 Flynn: Whenever I catch them I am disturbed by both bad genetic hypotheses and bad environmental ones. 3. “What has caused the Flynn reversal in Nordic and some other rich countries? There are incredible art teachers all over the country, working every day to improve their craft. These teachers care about their students, their subject, and their profession. And then there are the rest of them. They are ineffective, disinterested, and to put it bluntly, terrible art teachers, and they give the rest of us a bad name. Tim and Andrew work through their frustrations with those terrible art teachers and talk about what you can do if you find yourself slipping into these bad habits. Listen for their advice on why you need to explore new things (8:30), why you should stand up for yourself (10:00), and how to avoid the negativity that leads to terrible teaching (11:45). This week on Gritty Bowmen we talk about some of the camera gear we use to film our hunts and make our movies. We don’t claim to be professional cameramen at Gritty Bowmen. There are a lot of guys out there who know a lot more than we do about filmmaking. And that’s great. But when I was getting into filmmaking I had difficulty finding the resources I needed to step up my game. By the end of today’s podcast you’ll have a clear understanding of the equipment we use and we’ll provide you with some useful links to training materials we’ve used as well as links to the equipment we prefer. There is some footage that was taken with a Canon DSLR 70D, a Sony 4K camcorder and a consumer grade Sony Handicam. You can compare the footage between the cameras for yourselves at the end of this podcast. All the footage will be raw and will not have any image correction done on them. Thanks for watching.
