Mark Carpenter is a serial storyteller. He teaches people how to lead intentionally by telling stories that teach, lead, sell, and inspire. He is the co-creator of the best-selling book and workshop “Master Storytelling: How to Turn Your Experiences Into Stories that Teach, Lead, and Inspire”. What problem do you solve?  Mark is going to focus on connecting with people through storytelling to achieve business goals. Show Notes: We are always dealing with people. How are we going to get to know, like and trust people? We can do this through story. Research shows that people that learn information through stories, retain the information better and find you to be more credible. Storytelling can be a game changer. Learn the skill and structure, get feedback and practice to get good at storytelling. You won't get better by sitting on the sidelines. You've got to do it! One of the biggest mistakes in storytelling is to not knowing what your purpose and point of the story is. “You've got to know how to land the plane.” You need to know your audience. Your story is more about your customer than it is about you. The extraordinary lives inside the ordinary. If you have an experience that you have an emotional reaction to, it is likely there is a lesson and a story to be shared. Mark Carpenter's Best Small Business Tip: Your stories matter. Don't discount the things that happen to you. They have the power to connect with those inside and outside your organization. Episode Highlights “Building a brand isn't like putting money in a slot machine,” Mark joked. Like storytelling, it requires intentionality. “You have to look for the experiences.” How can you find stories? Mark advises us to, “Look for anything that creates an emotional reaction.” Stories are built around emotion and help produce emotion as they're shared over and over again. As brands, we need to encourage our people to look for these moments of customer emotion around the brand. “Sharing experiences requires vulnerability,” Mark noted. It takes a lot as a brand and as a leader to stand up and say, “This is who we are.” Leading with story. “You'll be seen as a stronger leader if you connect through story,” Mark shared. “You need to connect the information to your people. Make it real for them. That's the job of a leader.” What brand has made Mark smile recently? Mark came prepared for this question! He shared another brand that made him smile earlier in the interview, Second Chance Academy. However, his big smile came from his hometown favorite, Kizik shoes, which Mark wears everywhere. He leveraged that ability into a career in marketing communications and public relations, then as a college professor and corporate facilitator. Now, he teaches people how to more intentionally tell stories that teach, lead, sell, and inspire to accomplish business and personal goals. He is the co-author of the best-selling book “Master Storytelling: How to Turn Your Experiences Into Stories that Teach, Lead, and Inspire” and co-creator of the Master Storytelling Workshop. Leveraging a 20-year career in corporate communication, 10 years working as an adjunct professor of communication, and 15 years facilitating training, Mark couples a lively, engaging style with purposeful, impactful learning. When he's not training, speaking, coaching, or creating new content, Mark is likely hiking or snowshoeing in the mountains near his home in Utah, playing the piano, bragging about his grandchildren, or writing children's books. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Mark Carpenter discuss:Showing rather than telling when it comes to culture Storytelling is a skill that you should master The purpose of storytelling Understanding the point of a story  Key Takeaways:Culture is not about what you write in your mission statement or company values, it's the actual environment and overall behavior that you have in your company. To show that, you need to use storytelling. Storytelling is a skill. Once you learn it and try it, you'll be able to experience the benefit of creating a connection with somebody. The benefits of mastering storytelling go beyond the numbers. Storytelling can create a connection between you and an audience, it can also entertain, but that's not all that it can do. Storytelling has the power to lead and inspire people to take action. Understand the point that you have in your story. Once you have a clear understanding of it, you'll be able to be more succinct in telling your story while still including details that are going to make the story come to life.  "Culture is much more about the behaviors in the hall than it is the values on the wall. It's what people are actually doing. That shows this is what we believe in collectively." —  Mark Carpenter  See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Download Mark Carpenter's Ebook, "Master Storytelling" for FREE by going to www.master-storytelling.com/podcastgift/  Connect with Mark Carpenter:  Website: www.master-storytelling.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MasterStorytellingLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/43261825/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjUZRg9IxkejFioE2mnDr6w Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370  Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Do you believe that stories are the best way to get your message across? Maybe you should. Stories are more than just a craft; they're a fundamental part of how we communicate with each other and the world. In this episode of Advance, we're joined by author, speaker, and facilitator Mike Carpenter, who discusses all the power and scope of storytelling. They discuss what happens in people's minds when listening to stories and how to put your message across while engaging in storytelling by speaking as much as you have to - not less, not more.If you think storytelling is only for businesses or brands, there's so much more you need to know about it. Tune in to this episode to have a look into it.EPISODE 10 SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTSWho needs storytelling?04:39Stories are beneficial for anyone wanting to make real human connections. It helps people remember more information, more accurately. Why do people love stories so much?10:07Storytelling induces three brain reactions:Oxytocin increase:Storytelling increases what's called the trust hormone production in you, helping them identify with the joy and the pain you describe.Cortisol increase:An increase in cortisol means people pay more attention to what you say.DopamineDopamine, or the feel-good hormone, is released when your audience gets a satisfactory resolution to the end of the story you tell. It helps them remember the information better and feel good about it.How do you keep your stories just the right length?18:54By intentionally crafting your story. Your story is not just a complete narrative start-to-finish of what happened. It's about getting your point or message across to the people listening and engaging them through the story.QUOTES07:22-07:42“Many people will just throw stories out there without really realizing what kind of impact they have. My approach is different. My approach is for a very specific context, I am not against storytelling – I think it's the greatest thing that humankind has created. What I am in favor of is being smarter about it. And that's why I say business storytelling 1.0, in the way we've traditionally used it, is kind of dead... And we have to realize that what we need is better alignment.”25:04-25:10“We love stories because we live stories. The stories are our life.”ABOUT MARK CARPENTERMark Carpenter is an author, facilitator, consultant, speaker and serial storyteller.
