Here comes that Santa Ana wind again, blowing us right into the slightly skewed world of Steely Dan.It was never a question whether Strong Songs would do a Steely Dan episode, it was more a question of which song to focus on. In the end, Kirk chose "Babylon Sisters," a culmination of the band's incredible 1970s run that exemplifies Fagen and Becker's brand of pristine, laser-focused groove. It's also arguably the definitive recording of Bernard Purdie's signature Purdie Shuffle.Written by: Walter Becker and Donald FagenAlbum: Gaucho (1980)Listen/Buy: Apple Music | Amazon | SpotifyALSO FEATURED/DISCUSSED:“Sloop John B,” Bahamian folk song as recorded by The Beach Boys on Pet Sounds, 1966“Papa Was a Rollin' Stone” by The Temptations from Law of the Land, 1972“Cousin Dupree” by Becker/Fagen from Two Against Nature, 2000“Reelin' in the years” by Donald Fagen from Can't Buy a Thrill, 1972“Rikki Don't Lose That Number” by Fagen/Becker from Prezel Logic, 1974“Black Friday” by Becker/Fagen from Katy Lied, 1975"Peg," "Aja," and "Home at Last" by Becker/Fagen from Aja, 1977“Sing Sing Sing (With a Swing)” by Louis Prima performed by the Benny Goodman Orchestra, 1936“Cissy Strut” by The Meters from The Meters, 1969"Rosanna" by David Paich as recorded by Toto on Toto IV, with Jeff Porcaro on drums (and Tom Scott on alto sax!)Rob Brown's Purdie Shuffle tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g41Ab8iDaD0OUTRO SOLOIST: Kyle MolitorKyle is a Portland-based trombonist who plays in all sorts of bands, and was also featured on the year three Strong Songs theme msuic. I hope you've enjoyed the numbers this month. I have a confession. I did the previous three episodes as an excuse to do this one. This week we'll discuss the four winds of the earth and how they carry God's judgment to the four corners of the earth; an example of four-part harmony that works because it doesn't work; an album that I've been wrong about for 40 years; and a game that brings out a weird violent streak in my normally peaceable daughter.Hal Hammons serves as preacher and shepherd for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. He is the host of the Citizen of Heaven podcast. You are encouraged to seek him and the Lakewoods Drive church through Facebook and other social media. Lakewoods Drive is an autonomous group of Christians dedicated to praising God, teaching the gospel to all who will hear, training Christians in righteousness, and serving our God and one another faithfully. Yo what's up this is toru and in a way so are you.For those of you who don't know me, I'm a music producer, artist, and entrepreneur.I make music for that space between the dance floor and the bedroom, which has been streamed millions of times and licensed by brands big and small, including companies like Apple.I believe that regardless of what you produce, whether it be music, art, physical goods, or even spreadsheets, you have a process, whether you know it or not.To explore this further, I created The ProducerHead Podcast.ProducerHead is a place to have conversations with Producers about their experience and process to share what works and what doesn't. To help each of us learn and improve our own processes along the way.Today's guest is Eric Boulanger, a professional mastering engineer and founder of The Bakery, a Los Angeles-based mastering studio.Eric has mastered GRAMMY-award winning and nominated projects, including work with Green Day, Hozier, Selena Gomez, The Doors...and the list goes on.I won't spoil the surprise, but Eric even had the chance to re-master a beloved childhood record. If that weren't enough,Eric was mentored by industry legend Al Schmitt, who, if you don't already know, won GRAMMYs for projects that include:George Benson's Breezin',Toto's Toto IV,Qunicy Jones' Q's Jook Joint,Luis Miguel's Amarte Es Un Placer,Ray Charles Genius Loves Company,Chick Corea's The Ultimate Adventure, andSteely Dan's Aja.I mean. That is a list. And, for the record that is not a complete list.In this conversation we dive into - Learning to trust your own ears and preferences. - His take on digital v. analog gear in creating quality music. - How knowledge of mastering can influence your production and mixing work. - Some of his favorite tools and plug-ins - Selecting reference tracks for your own mixes and masters. - His experience as a musician and its ongoing role in his life and career. - The importance of resting your ears outside of work. What I really appreciate about Eric and this conversation is what seems to be a strongly held belief to not offer shortcuts and tactics. Instead, Eric presents questions that encourage us to think and further develop our own working philosophies as well as our ears. I'm stoked to share this episode with you. It is full of gems.Alright, here we go, Episode 7 of ProducerHead with Eric Boulanger, starts now. That's it for this episode of ProducerHead. Appreciate you coming through and being a part of it. My hope is that it helps you unlock a bit more creativity and find progress in a way that matters to you. Before we go:There are three simple and zero cost ways to support the ProducerHead Podcast.1 - Tap in and subscribe or follow wherever you're listening, whether it be Spotify or Apple.2- If you haven't already, drop a review on Apple or Spotify. Yes, you are right - Toto IV was released in March of 1982, not April of 1985. However, the rock group Toto was a celebrity phenomenon in 1985, particularly in Japan. In April of 1985 MTV broadcast a special episode showcasing a Toto concert from Japan.Toto IV was both a commercial and critical success. Three of the singles would be top 10 hits, and the album would achieve triple Platinum status as it became known as one of the best albums of the year. Critically, the group would earn six Grammy awards including Album of the Year, and Record of the Year for the single “Rosanna.”The group would spend much of 1982 and 1983 on tour, though there would be some changes in personnel. Bassist David Hungate left the group shortly after the release of Toto IV, sensing that the success of the album and the fame of the group would negatively impact time with his family. Lead singer Bobby Kimball was in and out of court fighting prosecution on drug-related charges. Those charges would eventually be dismissed in late May 1983, but he would be released from the band after missing many recording sessions. The album is a soft-rock masterpiece, with balanced synth and keyboard sounds and soaring harmonies. Songs have a jazzy feel, interspersed with piano-based ballads.Lynch has been lobbying for a long time to do this album, and we hope you enjoy it for this week's podcast. RosannaThe biggest hit from the album was often thought to be inspired by actress Rosanna Arquette who was dating keyboardist Steve Porcaro. However, writer David Paich says the lyrics were based on various girls he had known in the past rather than a single individual. The shuffle drum pattern is reminiscent of both Bo Diddley rhythms and John Bonham's groove on "Fool in the Rain."Make BelieveThis sunny-feeling single hit number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100. It describes a time of looking back with an old lover, remembering the moments they shared. It was the second US single from the album. David Paich wrote the song, and Bobby Kimball is on lead vocals.I Won't Hold You BackThe piano-oriented ballad peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, and held the number 1 spot on the US Adult Contemporary chart for three weeks. It looks back on a failed romance as the singer lets go of what he had. Guitarist Steve Lukather takes lead vocals duties for this track, and Eagles alumnus Timothy B. Schmidt provides backing vocals in the chorus. AfricaWhile this song did well as a single, it has grown into a cultural icon. It did top the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983, but would see a resurgence in popularity over time, particularly after Weezer's cover in 2018. The lyrics depict a man struggling between his love for the continent and returning to his relationship elsewhere. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture “Ladyhawke”This fantasy movie starring Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Matthew Broderick hit the big screen in April of 1985. STAFF PICKS:Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the WavesWayne starts us off with a popular and optimistic song that got the band Grammy-nominated for Best New Artist. It is off their debut and eponymously named album. It was first released in Canada, though the band was out of England. It went to number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.Summer of '69 by Bryan AdamsBruce brings us this well-known song from Adams' album "Reckless," which was released in April of 1985. The original name was going to be "Best Days of My Life," and in the first draft the lyric "summer of '69" only appeared once. With the name change, "Summer of '69" replaced several appearances of the phrase "best days of my life," in the track.High On You by SurvivorRob's staff pick is an ode to the intoxication and infatuation of new love. It is the first top 10 single from their album "Vital Signs," and arose from a jam during touring sound checks. Mickey Thomas from Jefferson Starship and Peter Wolf from the J. Geils Band are supporting musicians on this track.Silent Running by Mike + the MechanicsLynch finishes the staff picks with a synth-heavy song with science fiction lyrics. The singer is a father who has journeyed into the future and is now communicating back to his son with instructions for mitigating the coming war and catastrophe. This is the first single released by Mike + the Mechanics, and it went to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Moments In Love by Art of NoiseThis largely instrumental piece is a signature song from the art rock group. In this, our first-anniversary episode, we talk about the new Beatles releases quite a bit, before moving on to Toto and their album Toto IV, their incredible prowess as studio musicians, and their well-known penchant for doing cocaine back in the day. Our movie this time is the 1982 classic "An American Werewolf in London," which Todd had never seen until now. This excellent, strange, and surprisingly romantic movie sparks an interesting and funny conversation. The incomparable and complete legendary figures of musician songwriters David Paich and Steve Porcaro can only be told in "Wow". Sunset Sound was the tracking recording studio for Toto IV, Hydra and about a 1000 other sessions with these two guys playing massive roles. The idea of the Sunset Roundtable is to have a free discussion about memories at this legendary facility, as well as learning about the person's growth in life and their career throughout the time period making records here at the studio. David Paich speaks sincerely on his father Marty, as well as Steve with Drum legend father, Steve Porcaro. We all agree that Jeff Porcaro might be the greatest drummer ever and that there is an everlasting magic of this recording studio which is still alive today. Steve and David both share on working with Don Henley , Michael Jackson , Quincy Jones and the absolute praise for their brother guitarist Steve Lukather. Toto IV stories are the best ever & they set the record straight on drug use in the 1980's and this is one of the funnest, coolest roundtables around one of the most significant bands and people to grace this series. Aquí tenéis el listado de temas: 1 - Night Ranger "Don't tell me you love me" 2 - Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes "Up where we belong" (Oficial y caballero) 3 - Billy Idol "The untouchables" (Remembrance) 4 - Burton Cummings "You saved my soul" (Melanie) 5 - Teenage Head "Ain't got no sense" (Curso del 84) 6 - Dan Hill "It's a long road" (Acorralado) 7 - Survivor "Eye of the tiger" (Rocky III) 8 - Journey "Only solutions" (Tron) 9 - Sammy Hagar "Fast times at Ridgemont High" (Aquel excitante curso) 10 - The Cars "Shake it up" (El último americano virgen) 11 - Ian Thomas "Strange brew" (Extraño brebaje) 12 - Linda Stevens Foote "I don't need to love you" (Una loca, loca fiesta) 13 - David Bowie & Giorgio Mordorer "Putting out the fire" (El beso de la pantera) 14 - Avalon "Rumour has it" (Wacko) 15 - Michelle Pfeiffer "Cool rider" (Grease 2) 16 - Rush "Witch hunt" (Guerra futura 198 X) 17 - Toto "Rosanna"
It's gonna take a lot to drag us away from TOTO IV, Toto's career-saving collection of pop rock classics! James and Connor will dabble in the opening notes of Jeff Porcaro's iconic Rosanna Shuffle and bless the rains down in Africa. We'll explore Toto's unexpected connections with diverse corners of the music world, from Hakuna Matata to Michael Jackson's Thriller to Star Wars. We've got facts about all 10 songs from this 1982 record, plus we discover a brand new drink and learn about an art installation hidden somewhere in the vast Namib Desert. Between great rockers like Good For You and We Made It to power ballads like I Won't Hold You Back, you can be SURE we're not in Kansas anymore!Keep Spinning at www.SpinItPod.com!Thanks for listening! Power ballads riddled with strings! These tracks are unique and triumphant in many ways, but that doesn't mean we necessarily like them all that much.We powered ourselves through and got in touch with something we might have been neglected...OUR FEELINGS. That's right, we still have them somewhere... just need to jump start them a bit. And this album will do that. David Paich and Jeff Porcaro and crew are some of the most renowned studio musicians of this time period and deserve mad props for crushing it in their own style. If you're in our camp, we have some funny bevis and butthead-esque moments that will keep you from hurling. If you're a Lord of the Rings fan, Tim would prefer the screech of the witch king of Angmar, leader of the Nazguls, over a lot of these songs, especially "I Wont Hold You Back".Enjoy!Support the show

Toto is an American rock band formed in 1977 in Los Angeles, CA and are known for a musical style that combines elements of pop, rock, soul, funk, progressive rock, hard rock, R&B, blues, and jazz. Having released 14 studio albums and sold over 40 million records worldwide, the group has received several Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009.David Paich and Jeff Porcaro had played together as session musicians on several albums and decided to form a band; David Hungate, Steve Lukather, Steve Porcaro, and Bobby Kimball were recruited before the release of the band's eponymous debut album in 1978. Led by the Top 5 single "Hold the Line", the album brought the band to mainstream attention but it was their fourth album Toto IV (1982) which brought them global attention. "Africa" topped the Billboard Hot 100, while "Rosanna" reached number 2, helping Toto become one of the best-selling music groups of their era.The Jersey Guys take a trip through the bands studio efforts and history so we hope you will enjoy this episode as much as we did making it for you!

"Africa" is a great song. And it's been covered over and over and over again. But what about the rest of this record? Turns out things get a little weird. Did Toto make an album for music nerds?
Toto, we've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore! The boys take an unexpectedly weird and emotional journey listening to “Toto IV.” And a much less weird journey playing “Blitzkrieg Bop.” And a completely entertaining journey discussing the best title tracks ever! The guys in Toto, who may have done more to shape the sound of the 80's than anyone else, set out in 1982 to make an album with a "produce hits or else" mission. The album that they released, "Toto IV" (reaching its 40th birthday in April of 2022) includes some of the most enduring songs of that generation. Join us as we take a deep dive into the stories behind songs like "Africa", "Rosanna" and "I Won't Hold You Back" and why they still endure today. We also also discuss the production of the Thriller album on which they played and the tragic premature death of the leader of the band, Jeff Porcaro. Here comes that Santa Ana wind again, blowing us right into the slightly skewed world of Steely Dan. It was never a question whether Strong Songs would do a Steely Dan episode, it was more a question of which song to focus on. In the end, Kirk chose "Babylon Sisters," a culmination of the band's incredible 1970s run that exemplifies Fagen and Becker's brand of pristine, laser-focused groove. It's also arguably the definitive recording of Bernard Purdie's signature Purdie Shuffle. On this episode of the Zevon Chronicles, I discuss Warren's 1980 release, "Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School." This was a quite tumultuous time in Zevon's personal life as he was in and out of rehab and his marriage came to an end all while he was trying to record an album to follow "Exitable Boy" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Luck_Streak_in_Dancing_School One of the things I enjoy about doing this series is that although I'm already a huge fan of Warren Zevon, I learn many things in the process of putting these together. Zevon co-produced this album with Greg Ladanyi. Due to a mild attack of dyslexia, I mispronounced his name in this video, but Ladanyi was a successful producer, working with Jackson Browne, Don Henley and more in addition to Zevon. Ladanyi won a Grammy in 1983 for "Best Engineered Recording - Non-Classical" for his work on Toto IV, by Toto. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Ladanyi Purchase this album on Vinyl: https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/1415840?ev=rb Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/recordnightpodcast/ E-mail: recordnightpodcast@gmail.com

“Hold the Line! Love isn’t always on time!” sings the lead singer on “Hold The Line” from TOTO’s 1978 self titled debut album. The song still sounds great after 40 trips around the sun, as their tour is named. It gets the whole audience out of their seats and singing along. “Rosanna” is another crowd favorite. It’s from their 1982 album, Toto IV. They joke about how creative they are when naming their albums. “Not quite a year since she went away, Rosanna. Now she’s gone and I have to say, meet you all the way.” They also play “Human Nature”, which was written by the keyboardist and became a hit for Michael Jackson. Dominique Xavier Taplin plays a fantastic keyboard solo. He is filling in for the regular player. He is also a member of Ghost-Note, headed by two drummers from Snarky Puppy. At last, the lead guitarist asks the crowd “Are you ready for that song?” Everyone stands up and joins in singing “Africa”. It’s quite a magical moment when the band stops and just the crowd is singing the melody. See the full setlist here. Quinn Delaney
As a child living in New York City, Al Schmitt would catch the subway on weekends to spend the day at his uncle’s recording studio, observing different engineering techniques. At 19, Schmitt began working with Tom Dowd at Apex Studios in New York City. He worked as an independant engineer at Atlantic Records and Prestige Records, and after moving to California, he started working at Radio Recorders. RCA Records hired Schmitt as a staff producer for their label and a staff engineer at their Hollywood studio. This let Schmitt develop his wide-ranging engineering skills by working with the various pop, jazz, classical, and country … With an unparalleled 24 (twenty-four) Grammy Awards for engineering, Schmitt epitomizes great recording through decades of technological change. The legendary and world-renowned recording engineer received a Grammy in 2002 for Diana Krall’s “The Look of Love.” Schmitt, who has worked with Krall on her past five albums. Up one aisle you’ll find Frank Sinatra, Henry Mancini, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, and Miles Davis; up another you’ll bump into Jefferson Airplane, Jackson Browne, Neil Young, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers and Steely Dan. In ’97 Al became an inductee into the TEC Awards Hall of Fame. In 2015 Schmitt became the first recording engineer to be presented with a star on the Hollywood walk of fame in front of Capitol records.

On this episode of Inside MusiCast, we welcome back Toto founding member David Paich, as we break down the band’s classic album, Toto IV – track-by-track. Toto IV was a pinnacle album in the band’s history. Not only did it garner critical acclaim, a collection of Grammy Awards, and made Toto a household name, but its success came at a critical time, as their previous two albums saw shrinking sales and only one minor hit single. Toto IV not only catapulted the band to a realm of giant success, with hit singles like “Rosanna”, “Make Believe”, “I Won’t Hold You Back” and “Africa”, but it was a breakthrough for the band in terms of their overall sound, from new synth technology, to the incorporation of incredible horn arrangements, to the implementation of full orchestration – not to mention the involvement of some the best recording and mastering engineers and guest musicians. Breaking this masterpiece down track-by-track, Inside MusiCast welcomes David Paich.
In the music scene there are only a few names that command immediate respect. Sinatra. Foster. Hubbard, Q. Laboriel, Jaco. Goodman. Getz. Corea. Bellson. Armstrong. And then there’s Porcaro…a legacy surname that is renowned in jazz, rock, pop, and classical genres. As owner of this respected surname, Joe Porcaro, a most respected percussionist and drummer, has lived a fortunate life that has involved music at every turn. From marching with his dad in his early days, to performing with his sons on the Grammy Award winning album TOTO IV, to playing on countless film scores and TV shows over the years, Joe Porcaro is a living legend who lives by the philosophy of “passing the music on”. He is constantly working to expand his legacy by sharing his musical knowledge, talent, and passion to students who study at the Los Angeles Music Academy (LAMA), which he helped start in 1996. Here, students (who are so lucky), work face-a-face with one of music’s most respected instructors. His sons, Steve, Mike, and Jeff (we all miss him) remain the pride of his heart, as they were sole beneficiaries of their father’s passion and love of music. And that’s an understatement. Inside MusiCast is honored to welcome a living legend who is still in his prime, Joe Porcaro.
