"I love how it feels to be wild." Can you really package a deep, meaningful message about the perils of conforming to social convention in a slick, spooky Halloween jam? Genre-bending, independent, Denton-based musical artist Brian Lambert says yes.Back for his second appearance on Journey of a Song, Brian chats with Emmeline about how an exploration of major chords turned into a well-crafted werewolf song with a message about creative empowerment. He also shares some of the lessons from his previous project--in which he wrote and produced one song each week for an entire year--and some of the aspects of the music business with which he's not only come to terms, but to which he's leaned in over the course of the past few months. They also talk about how songwriting inspiration can come from nerdy music theory ideas, and how the different connotations of the term "emotional manipulator" can apply to musicians. To learn more about Brian Lambert, or to follow his musical journey, visit his official website. Eric Worley is with Rockhouse Music Alliance https://www.facebook.com/rockhousemusicalliance/ Eric is one of few artists that has the ability to make every song he plays fit his style. Eric conforms to no standard other than his own. He creates a refreshing trip back in time before all country songs sounded the same, were based on partying in a field, and driving on a dirt road. If you are a true country fan, Eric Worley is your next favorite artist. He grew up in southwest Virginia and has shown an amazing talent for singing and songwriting going back to his teenage years. His unique songwriting style features skillfully planned lyrics, a catchy melody, and a delivery that is all his own. Eric doesn't sound like anyone else; he sounds like himself https://www.facebook.com/ericworleymusic/. I am doing a bit more talking in this episode than usual, partly because Eric is so quiet, and partly because though I want to keep it professional I need to have more of a voice on this podcast. How much does each person own? Are there any samples? Where’s the download link? Those are the questions you need to think about when pitching to music supervisors. Make it as easy as possible for them to find and use your music.---Connect with Lennon:Website: https://www.lennoncihak.comPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/lennoncihakMailing List: http://eepurl.com/dlYpxTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/lennoncihak/Twitter: https://twitter.com/LennonCihakLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lennoncihak/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5eX_uxAUIwBC0gyKwCbqtwGuest Request: https://goo.gl/forms/8zs61IYiIXMLjFpX2Connect with Shellie Lewis:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shellielewis/

The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Josh Norek is a difficult man to define. He is generally a behind the scenes kind of guy - president of Regalías Digitales (a firm that helps hundreds of Latin recording artists collect their music royalties and license their songs to film and television productions), co-founder of the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC), co-host of the nationally syndicated public radio show ‘The Latin Alternative,’ former VP of Nacional Records, artist manager, music attorney.  Then again sometimes he’s an in-front of the scenes kind of guy, like with his group Hip Hop Hoodios, which he describes as “probably the world’s only Latino Jewish hip hop group out there”. As Josh tells it, “It’s a group that started as an inside joke” but that ultimately carved out an impressive space within the emerging Latin Alternative space of the early aughts.  Hip Hop Hoodios went on extended hiatus for over a decade, releasing the occasional single or remix but generally staying quiet, until late 2019 when they released “Knishin’ In The Mission” which was followed by last month’s “Turn Back The Clock” featuring Mexican Institute of Sound and Santi Mostaffa. The song and video have enjoyed surprising chart success in the Coronasphere.   In both contexts, Josh is an intensely curious and creative music business guy, with both a sense of humor and a sense of purpose. He’s an artist advocate who fights for artists to receive every penny that they deserve. He has served on the boards of advocacy organizations A2IM (American Association of Independent Musicians) and Voto Latino. Here he talks about releasing new music during a pandemic, how he approaches his collaborations, and the secrets of securing Spotify playlist placements.

Host Zach Freed is joined by Kevin Erickson, Director of the Future of Music Coalition. Zach and Kevin talk about the music industry's role in the growing anti-monopoly movement and Kevin's work at the intersection of music, community organizing and policy advocacy. They also discuss: how increased concentration in the music industry has impacted independent musicians, including how major record labels use their market power to shape the marketplace for everyone else organizing musicians to advocate as a collective on issues like healthcare changing business models in the music industry and the impacts of recent mergers how to build a media ecosystem that can better serve the needs of diverse local music communities   At this political moment where we have this growing, collective, all-hands-on-deck, national anti-monopoly moment, I think that there's something really important that the music community can contribute, just because we've got so much direct experience with the impacts of ownership consolidation and monopolies in our own industries.   Related Resources Future of Music Coalition Mechanic's Guide to Putting Out Records Transcript Hibba Meraay: Hey, everyone, it's Hibba, ILSR's communications manager, and I have Zach with me here today from our Community-Scaled Economies team. Zach Freed: Hey! Hibba Meraay: So Zach has been involved in producing Building Local Power. You've probably heard his name on the credits of the show, but today, he actually did the interview you're about to hear. Zach Freed: That's right. I interviewed Kevin Erickson, who works at the Future of Music Coalition, which is an organization that helps do political advocacy on behalf of working musicians. We talked a lot about the music industry's connection to our growing anti-monopoly movement. Hibba Meraay: I really enjoyed this interview because it's a little bit outside the bounds of the issue areas we normally work on, like energy or broadband, but still very much related, and really illustrates why concentration is bad across all sectors of the economy. I'm wondering, Zach, what inspired you to do the interview? Did you know that concentration was an issue in the music industry beforehand? Zach Freed: Oh, yeah, definitely. So, aside from, like most people, being a lifelong music fan, I have two working musicians in my family, and most of my friends are musicians. I also help organize shows in DC and did college radio in school. So it's a topic that's always been near and dear to me, and definitely notice trends towards consolidation in the music industry at large. Hibba Meraay: That's great. I think it's really cool to hear what inspired the conversation. I don't have a lot of background, so I learned a lot of new things about the music industry listening to the interview. I was really shocked to hear that there are only three major record labels left today, down from six in 1995. So Kevin explains how they are really the gatekeepers, and they have the ability to use their market power to shape the marketplace for everyone else. It was one of those moments where you know something is important and it's an issue, but I realized, “Wow, this is really bad,” and it was a wake-up call. Zach Freed: Hibba Meraay: Hey, everyone, it's Hibba, ILSR's communications manager, and I have Zach with me here today from our Community-Scaled Economies team. Zach Freed: Hey! It can be hard for lesser-known bands and musicians to get a foothold in several areas of the music industry without having the right connections or, as old school as it sounds, a record label. This is true when it comes to trying to get licensing agreements to place their music in radio, film, TV shows, advertising campaigns, and video games.   But what if there was a social network built specifically for that reason?  What if bands and artists could connect with each other, build relationships, collaborate, and easily find music licensing opportunities to help support their revenue goals?   Broadjam.com, founded in 1999, is one of the world’s largest and oldest music community websites that provides services aimed at independent musicians and bands. The website is home to over 500,000 searchable songs and over 190,000 artists from all over the world.   To help independent musicians find opportunities, Broadjam holds a variety of sponsored contests throughout the year with the purpose of exposing and rewarding the best in musicianship and songwriting.  These songs can go on to receive placement in major media campaigns on the radio, TV, film and even video games.   Music industry professionals also use the Broadjam service to find music for feature films, TV and commercials, plus they take will take part in select Broadjam contests to help determine winners and placements. Major record labels use Broadjam’s music encoding service to encode, catalog and control music metadata.   Broadjam also offers professional services to industry customers, including their online system for tallying votes in popular music award ceremonies, from the popular Academy of Country Music Awards all the way back Broadjam’s backyard in Madison, Wisconsin for the annual Madison Area Music Awards. Their knowledge and expertise has been trusted by clients such as Warner/Chappell, Advanced Micro Devices, Peavey, Yamaha and more.   Roy Elkins, founder and president of Broadjam, joins us in this episode to share his story with us about how Broadjam came about, his experiences and time in the music industry, his past employment at Ensoniq Corporation and Sonic Foundry that gave him a foundation and the connections to establish Broadjam, and his love of continuously giving back to the music industry at both the local and national levels. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/behindthebackline/support

Using these strategies will help you deal with rejection while staying positive so you can always put your best foot forward. Unfortunately, even the most successful independent musicians are not immune to having challenges. The world is full of  haters and rejection, so going out for gigs, doing live streams on social media and asking for support can conjure up criticism that is detrimental to growth and success. Having the proper strategies to learn from and deal with these situations will ultimately lead to growth, both as a musician and entrepreneur. Successful independent musicians who deal with rejection: Reframe rejection – know that it might be a sense of taste Know that it’s often not about them Don’t ignore their feelings – are vulnerable and seek support If the best effort is put forth, remain proud and move on Are thankful for the closure – don’t beat a dead horse Successful independent musicians who deal with haters: Having them is a badge of honor Don’t engage, delete Let your supporters do the dirty work Be open to the content of the criticism, not the spirit my which it is given Keep a Fan & Media Praise File and read ir when haters strike Guard your heart – appoint a gatekeeper Resources Email your questions for Bree to answer on the show:  Bree@FEMusician.com (mailto:Bree@FEMusician.com) Leave your audio questions for Bree to play on the air and answer (you can promote yourself too):  SpeakPipe (http://www.speakpipe.com/femusician) Subscribe to the show on  iTunes (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/female-entrepreneur-musician/id981305947?mt=2) Give us a  review on iTunes (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/female-entrepreneur-musician/id981305947?mt=2) Listen on  Soundcloud (http://www.soundcloud.com/women-of-substance) Show Editing by Jen Edds at  317 Sound Design (http://www.317sounddesign.com/) Music by  Stella Ronson (https://soundcloud.com/stella-Ronson) ABOUT HOST BREE NOBLE Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/breenoblemusic)  or on Instagram @breenoblemusic       (https://www.addtoany.com/share#url=https%3A%2F%2Ffemusician.com%2Fsuccessful-independent-musicians%2F&title=FEM140%20How%20Successful%20Independent%20Musicians%20Overcome%20Rejection%20%26%20Deal%20With%20Haters)
