We had the pleasure of interviewing K.Flay over Zoom video! Alt-rock’s artful enigma K.Flay (the stage name of Kristine Flaherty) hurls fistfulls of theoretical paint at the modern music landscape by announcing her forthcoming EP ‘Inside Voices’, dropping June 11th via BMG. The GRAMMY-nominated musical changeling throws caution to the wind on the forthcoming collection, instead choosing to scream a primal roar of self-confidence across five tracks of fresh, biting self-expression. Kicking off this next phase in her already varied & exciting discography is the first single “Four Letter Words” - birthed from a very real moment in her life (cue the first line “I drank a liter of tequila in my bedroom, it’s taking every ounce of power not to text you”), the song kicks off with a chugging guitar before erupting into a cathartic sonic explosion that evolves the manic loneliness felt post-breakup into finding the strength to confidentially say “FUCK YOU” to the one that didn’t doesn’t deserve you. In a fitting visual accompaniment, the artist rages out in her bedroom while two cartoon characters, IV (representing the 'id') and OV (representing the 'superego') wreak havoc on her psyche. It’s a shape-shifter of a song that perfectly encapsulates the forthcoming EP’s sonic variety and expression. Throughout the collection, K.Flay offers up a smorgasbord of colorful alternative art-pop -- unexpected, exhilarating, and truly one-of-kind, be it via “Dating My Dad” that features Barker on drums and examines how we repeat the same tired behaviors of those who raised us, or via the snarling “TGIF” that asks the listener to rethink society’s tendency to “tune out” the bullshit going on in the world and boasts a heaven-sent solo from Tom Morello. The EP also features the clever and irreverent rap closer “My Name Isn’t Katherine” (a comical reference to her issue with constantly being misnamed), and “Good Girl”, a co-writing collaboration with Dan Reynolds and an infectious punk-tinged singalong about reaching your breaking point when it comes to politeness and finding the courage to not give a fuck anymore. The Chicago-born K.Flay’s near-undefinable amalgamation of dark-electro soundscapes, art-pop sensibilities, spitfire rhymes, industrial rock backbone and versatile chameleon-like vocals has led the songwriter/artist/multi-instrumentalist to two GRAMMY nominations (Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical for ‘Every Where Is Some Where’, and Best Rock Song for "Blood in the Cut"), tours alongside Grouplove, Imagine Dragons & Thirty Seconds To Mars, and festival spots at ACL Fest, Bonnaroo, Coachella, Treefort, and Riot Fest. She most recently dropped the three-song cover collection ‘Don’t Judge A Song By Its Cover’ that included off-the-wall remakes of songs by Limp Bizkit, The Offspring & Green Day, and appeared on songs by Arkelles and Jax Anderson. Fast forward to 2014 she released her debut album Life As a Dog and not only did it debut at number 2 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart and also made it's way to number 14 on Billboards Rap Album chart which is impressive in itself. It's no surprise that she was the first to sign under Imagine Dragons singer Dan Reynolds' label Night Street Records. She's toured with Third Eye Blind, Dashboard Confessional, AWOLNATION early on before embarking on bigger tours like touring major stadiums opening for Imagine Dragons and then headlining on her own shows. Her songs have been praised by many including Taylor Swift and if that doesn't impress you, how does 2 Grammy nominations sound... Yeah that was in 2018,  one was for Best Engineered Album and Best Rock Song for her hit Blood in the Cut.She's also appeared on The Late Late Show with Seth Meyers, she's got 3 studio albums to date and so much more!

Jamila is the host of "The Working Singer Podcast." This convo goes all the way back to October, I believe. Like I said, life has been crazy. Sometimes a very good crazy.  You can find out more by checking out Jamila's website: https://jamilaford.com/home Jazz/soul singer/songwriter Jamila Ford has garnered attention for her sizable singing chops. Her slight frame belies a bewitchingly powerful yet smooth mezzo-soprano voice that gets your attention and demands a second listen.   Majoring in music with an emphasis in vocal performance, Jamila attended the University of California Riverside, graduating with her BA in 2001. Since then, she has performed around the world as a solo artist and as a backing vocalist, lending her talent to the projects of artists such as Seal, Angelo (Fishbone), Melody Gardot, Spiritualized (Coachella Festival), and Bonnie Pointer (The Pointer Sisters). Drawing influences from jazz to R&B to pop, she can give you a history of 50 years of American popular music during one of her sets, with her sultry voice providing the linchpin.    Jamila released her debut EP, the breezy Traces of the Day, in January of 2001; the funky ‘70s R&B-inspired Fabulous EP in 2003; and her first full-length album, the soulful and revealing Enough (a nominee for Independent Music Awards best Soul/R&B album), in October 2010.   Her latest EP, the critically-acclaimed The Deep End, was released in September 2014. A collection of reinterpreted standards and an original composition. Jamila's smoky, sophisticated, and self-assured vocals breathe new life into “All Blues,” “Gentle Rain,” “Sugar,” and “Wild Is the Wind.” Her original composition, “Silencio,” is a strutting Latin-jazz tinged ode to the unspoken connection between lovers.  Says Jamila, "I love music and I love to sing. Music is my genuine path in life. It is the best way for me to give of myself to this world. I sacrifice for it in a way that I do for nothing else. I feel most whole and most connected when I'm on stage singing."    The Deep End was included in the first round of ballots for three GRAMMYs for Best Jazz Vocal Album, Best New Artist and Best Engineered Album and earned raves from critics, who hailed her as "...an exquisite song stylist validating an impressive artistic repertoire with economy and style" (CJ Bond, jazmuzic.com) and proclaimed "Ford is ready to take her place among the elite of sophisticated jazz vocalists" (Paul Freeman, Pop Culture Classics).    An active member of West Coast Songwriters (WCS), Jamila was awarded Hollywood Songwriter of the Year for her song “Not Exactly Perfect” in 2007. She went on to compete at the grand finals alongside the year's other regional winners at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley, CA.   Jamila has played to enthusiastic and supportive audiences at L.A.'s Café Cordiale, Room 5, First and Hope Supper Club, Pips, and Genghis Cohen, and is also excited about her recent foray into performing at house concerts, which gives her a chance to connect with her audience on a more intimate level.   Host Jamila's acoustic duo for a house concert! It's easy and fun! Find out more here.    Here's to happy singing!  Kristy :)

News, a Celebrity Interview with Charles Dye and we tweak The Stupid Knob! News: Digidesign Releases Pro Tools 7.3 LinPlug Releases Organ 3 Celemony Releases Melodyne Plugin Celebrity Interview: Charles DyeThis week we sat down for a conversation with Latin Grammy Award-winning engineer, mixer and producer Charles Dye, who began his engineering career in 1992. Since that time he has mixed hits for Ricky Martin, Sammy Hagar, Julio Iglesias, and Jon Bon Jovi, as well as recorded artists such as Aerosmith, Hanson, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and Gloria Estefan, among many others. Since then, Charles has become a bit of a pioneer in the area of mixing records on Pro Tools, evidenced by his mix of Livin' La Vida Loca, as Dan Daley said in Mix Magazine, "a milestone of technology: the first Number One record to be done completely within a hard disk system. In addition to changing the course of mainstream pop music, 'La Vida' may also turn out to be a pivot point in how records are made." Charles's further commitment to Pro Tools and mixing on it was demonstrated by his two-time Grammy and Latin Grammy nominated engineering and mixing of five additional songs on Ricky Martin's album, including two additional singles Shake Your Bon Bon and Private Emotion. In 2001 he was awarded a Latin Grammy for Best Engineered Album for Thalia's Arrasando, and he worked with Pro Tools on that project as well. As a veteran Pro Tools user he has recorded, mixed and produced almost every record he's worked on in the last several years completely on the system, and though he may use an analog or digital large-format console from time to time, you'll always find his Pro Tools nearby for the sounds and techniques he's become known for. And most importantly, he's a good friend of PSN and all of our loyal listeners. Get Mix It Like A Record For Just $99!
