Over the last decade, Germany has become a hotbed of aspiring young martial arts talent who have seen their careers grow from DIY short films on YouTube to massive Hollywood productions. Cologne-born Vi-Dan Tran is a wushu practitioner and Hong Kong movie fan. His passions led to a career in stunts and eventually membership of the hallowed Jackie Chan Stunt Team, working with the man himself on movies like 'The Foreigner' and 'Bleeding Steel'. Nowadays, Vi-Dan Tran can be found behind-the-scenes working on the action design of some of Hollywood's biggest movies, from 'Shang-Chi' to 'Dune'. His latest film is 'Knights of the Zodiac', a live-action take on Japan's popular 'Saint Seiya' manga series. It's pretty clear that Vi-Dan Tran will be directing feature films soon enough, and he admits that he couldn't have achieved so much if it wasn't for the strong bonds he has made within the German martial arts filmmaking community. It was Vi-Dan Tran who helped to bring fellow German martial artist Lorenz Hideyoshi onto the set of 'Dune', where he worked as Timothée Chalamet's stunt double for both films in the series. Lorenz is equally puzzled as to why there are so many Germans of his generation working in the action film business; people like Andy Long, Max Huang, Mike Möller, Julia Schunevitsch, Can Aydin, Cha-Lee Yoon, Phong Giang, not to mention Lorenz's own brother, Felix Fukuyoshi. Despite their individual successes, they can all still be found jumping into each other's projects, as demonstrated by Lorenz with his stand-out appearances in great martial arts movies like 'Plan B' and 'Luc Van Tien'. A multitalented artist in his own right, Lorenz's new short film is called 'Daddy Issues', a fun kung fu throwback in which he stars, co-writes and co-directs.LINKSLorenz Hideyoshi on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lorenzhideyoshi/Lorenz Hideyoshi on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@HideyoshiRLorenz Hideyoshi on IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3947656/Lorenz's production company, Young Masters, on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@youngmasters'Daddy Issues' short film: https://youtu.be/IXoAnSBrXgw'Dark Jedi: A Star Wars Fan Film': https://youtu.be/Qh83vsRzgAY?si=N63y--lkLAiC8QqH'Dune' stunt team fight scene - Vi-Dan Tran versus Lorenz Hideyoshi: https://youtu.be/B_dtwG8GG7g'Dune: Part Two' trailer: https://youtu.be/_YUzQa_1RCE'Amazon Taps Lucas Carter To Pen Remake Of German Actioner ‘Plan B'; Sylvester Stallone Among Producers', Variety.com: https://deadline.com/2022/07/amazon-studios-remaking-german-actioner-plan-b-penned-by-lucas-carter-1235080073/'Plan B' (2016) review: http://kungfumovieguide.com/plan-b-2016/'Luc Van Tien: Kung Fu Warrior' (2017) review: http://kungfumovieguide.com/luc-van-tien-kung-fu-warrior-2017/'Duty - Out of Line' short film: https://youtu.be/_Wa-cNx391g?si=GKN_xBD6mhK41Nc_ Vi-Dan Tran on IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4263148/Vi-Dan Tran on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vi_dan/Vi-Dan's production company, T7 Productions, on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@T7pro'Darth Maul: Apprentice - A Star Wars Fan Film': https://youtu.be/Djo_91jN3Pk?si=A7sfj4m36Y-qhPh3'Cyberpunk 2077: Phoenix Program Fan Film': https://youtu.be/JJdtkKNQKJ4'Knights of the Zodiac' (2023) review: http://kungfumovieguide.com/knights-of-the-zodiac-2023/Max Huang on the Kung Fu Movie Guide Podcast: http://kungfumovieguide.com/kfmg-podcast-s06-episode-73-max-huang/ Hosted on Acast. On this week's episode, the gang was live on the Internet a while back chatting about the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot! Yes, this was the film that had a horrendously animated all-lizard Reptile, a really cool prologue sequence that feels like it's from another (better) movie, someone getting stabbed with their own frozen blood, and, you guessed it, a no-name protagonist that no one in the audience cares about! PLUS: The return of the VHS Trailer Game and a stupid t-shirt contest! Mortal Kombat (2021) stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Tadanobu Asano, Chin Han, Ludi Lin, Max Huang, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion; directed by Simon McQuoid. In honor of Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are joined by actors from across film and television for a special roundtable discussion: Desmond Chiam, Marvel's Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Prime Video's With Love; Max Huang, Warner Bros. Mortal Kombat; Sierra Katow, HBO Max's The Sex Lives of College Girls; and Mike Cabellon, NBC's Mr. Mayor. The four shared their thoughts on the current state of AAPI representation in entertainment, what they hope to see more of throughout Hollywood in the near future, and the impact that some of their own roles have had on their community. Moderating the discussion was MediaVillage's Juan Ayala, who opened with “Looking at the history of entertainment, is now the best time to be an Asian American actor?” “So far!” Mike Cabellon quickly said with a laugh. “There's no part in history where I'm like ‘I'd rather have been alive then', but I also hope that we're doing enough work that it'll be better for the next generation.” Desmond Chiam added, “We're on an incline. As each second passes that becomes the new best time to be an Asian American actor.” Max Huang chimed in, “I feel very privileged to be living in this day and age. With this whole, let's call it the ‘Asian Wave', I feel that I jumped right on and feel very lucky and happy to be here.” “I think hearing from actors who've been working for a long time or started a while ago, those stories compared to what we get to do?, it's like 'oh wow, thank you!'” Sierra Katow added. “I like to think that our achievements are our own but they did a lot of work and we get to benefit from it.” “We're definitely standing on the shoulders of giants.” Chiam said.

Mortal Kombat 2021, film review - rDNA Podcast #MortalKombat #MortalKombat2021review #FilmReviews Mortal Kombat is a 2021 martial arts fantasy film based on the video game franchise of the same name and a reboot of the Mortal Kombat film series. The film stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Max Huang, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada. It is directed by Simon McQuoid (in his feature directorial debut), from a screenplay by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham and a screen story by Russo and Oren Uziel. The film follows Cole Young, a washed-up mixed martial arts fighter who is unaware of his hidden lineage or why assassin Sub-Zero is hunting him down. Concerned for the safety of his family, he seeks out a clique of fighters that were chosen to defend Earthrealm against Outworld. Following the critical and commercial failure of the 1997 film Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, a third Mortal Kombat film languished in development hell for a period of nearly two decades. In late 2010, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema (whose parent company acquired the franchise from Midway Games in 2009) began developing a new film, with Kevin Tancharoen serving as director from a script written by Uziel in the wake of their Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short film. James Wan was announced as a producer in August 2015 and McQuoid was hired as director in November 2016. Production took place at Adelaide Studios in Adelaide and at other locations in South Australia. Principal photography occurred from September to December 2019. Mortal Kombat was released internationally on April 8, 2021, then in the United States on April 23, simultaneously in theaters in Dolby Cinema, IMAX and 4DX and on the HBO Max streaming service. The film received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $83.6 million worldwide against a $55 million budget. It became HBO Max's most-successful film launch to date. A sequel is in development with Jeremy Slater set to write the screenplay. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/doseofnerdacumen/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/doseofnerdacumen/support

All January-long is reserved to "celebrate" the Worst of 2021 and so the guys start off hot by talking about Mortal Kombat, the R-rated attempt at creating a better version of the 90s flick. Why does the tournament never actually happen in the movie? What's with all the obnoxious shoehorned video game references? Why suck up to the fans this much and yet still introduce a COMPLETELY NEW main character? Is "Arcana" this movie's version of "metachlorians"? All this and more!
Max Huang's turn as Kung Lao - the deadly, hat-throwing, Shaolin-trained kung fu cousin of Liu Kang - in the 2021 reboot of Mortal Kombat was a delightful surprise; a scene-stealing performance complete with comedy, drama, action, and an almighty 'fatality' which just about steals the movie. But the notion of Max being something of an 'overnight success' could not be further from the truth. The German wushu wunderkind has been planning this career from the moment his dad first introduced him to Bruce Lee movies on VHS as a child. His training took him to Asia and, eventually, the Jackie Chan Stunt Team, where his childhood hero would personally oversee his development from a young, eager stunt performer to an assistant stunt coordinator on films like The Foreigner (2017) and Bleeding Steel (2017). Max's short film, No Way Out (2020), is a masterful expression of his many talents: he acts, directs, writes, produces, handles the action and even sings the theme song. We now find Max at an interesting crossroads in his career; still very much in his prime, full of ideas, and with opportunities available in Europe, Asia and Hollywood. So what will he do next?
Cheers, Euer Kinoplus. In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld's Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth's greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?FOLLOW USFollow Daniel on Twitter, Instagram, and LetterboxdFollow Shahbaz on Twitter, Instagram, and LetterboxdFollow Anthony on Twitter, Instagram, and LetterboxdFollow The Movie Podcast on Twitter, Instagram, Discord, and YouTube

Mortal Kombat is currently set for release in the US on April 16 in cinemas and on HBO Max (where it will be available for a month). UK fans are also hoping for a streaming release, as HBO Max is only available in the US, but nothing has been confirmed yet. The Mortal Kombat movie is on its way and fans are hyped to see the video game played out on the big screen again. Many have been pleasantly surprised by the teaser, which was recently released, with the clip not shying away from the gore and R-Rated fatalities needed to make it an authentic adaptation. All in all, it looks like a pretty brutal take, with the film set to focus on the original character line-up including Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Lui Kang, Sonya Blade, Shang Tsung, Raiden, and Goro. Joe Taslim will be appearing as Sub-Zero, alongside Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Daniel Nelson as Kabal, and Elissa Cadwell as Nitara. Meanwhile, the film is being helmed by director Simon McQuoid and will be his feature debut, having previously directed adverts. Writer Greg Russo previously urged fans to have faith in the filmmaker, telling them: ‘If anyone has concerns if our director, Simon McQuoid, will stay faithful to MK, I urge you to go back and look at some of the VG commercials he directed. His PS3 “Michael” spot still gets me every time I watch it.' Meanwhile, Greg Russo and David Callaham have written the screenplay.
