In Theater As Data: Computational Journeys Into Theater Research (U Michigan Press, 2021), Miguel Escobar Varela explores the use of computational methods and digital data in theater research. He considers the implications of these new approaches, and explains the roles that statistics and visualizations play. Reflecting on recent debates in the humanities, the author suggests that there are two ways of using data, both of which have a place in theater research. Data-driven methods are closer to the pursuit of verifiable results common in the sciences; and data-assisted methods are closer to the interpretive traditions of the humanities. The book surveys four major areas within theater scholarship: texts (not only playscripts but also theater reviews and program booklets); relationships (both the links between fictional characters and the collaborative networks of artists and producers); motion (the movement of performers and objects on stage); and locations (the coordinates of performance events, venues, and touring circuits). Theater as Data examines important contributions to theater studies from similar computational research, including in classical French drama, collaboration networks in Australian theater, contemporary Portuguese choreography, and global productions of Ibsen. This overview is complemented by short descriptions of the author's own work in the computational analysis of theater practices in Singapore and Indonesia. The author ends by considering the future of computational theater research, underlining the importance of open data and digital sustainability practices, and encouraging readers to consider the benefits of learning to code. Book interview with Miguel Escobar – “The Unjust Steward: Wealth, Poverty, and the Church Today”
Rev. Dr. Tony Lin talks to Miguel Escobar about his new book The Unjust Steward: Wealth, Poverty, and the Church Today (Forward Movement, 2022). "Here is a book that inspires, yes, but also challenges and unsettles all who would take seriously Jesus's Way of Love,” writes The Most Rev. Michael B. Curry, XXVII Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church and author of Love is the Way (Penguin, 2020). “Weaving together words of wisdom from spiritual giants of early Christianity with profound reflections from his own life, Miguel Escobar pulls back the curtain of wealth and poverty to reveal our longstanding complicity with systems of injustice and calls us to make better, more humane choices, reflective of the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, that can change the world." Escobar wanted the book to be, as he says, “accessibly-written.” The Unjust Steward offers information meant to help us think differently about money and how it has been filtered through Christianity at the congregational level. “You have to have conversations to expand the moral imagination of what's possible,” says Escobar.
Miguel Escobar is the co-author of the original book on Power Query - "M" is for data monkey and its recent completely re-written version "Master Your Data" Master Your Data with Excel and Power BI - Skillwave Training Now a Product Manager at Microsoft working on Power Query - Miguel is someone who wants to help everyone turn their data into useful information Check out www.powerquery.com Also a musician with his song Someday Somehow available to listen to Spotify – Someday, Somehow Someday, Somehow (feat. Chris Cron) - Single by PAB on Apple Music
Today, we reunite two old friends with a penchant for writing books for people adjacent to tech as we welcome Miguel Escobar to the show. If you use Power Query or Power BI, you might have heard of Miguel. He is the co-author of several books on Power Query, Power BI, Power Pivot, and DAX. He is also part of the expert trifecta that created Skill Wave training and he is now an integral part of Microsoft working to make Power Query better for all users. He and Rob reminisce about book deals, DAX, training, and writing in a voice for the people, instead of for the tech giants. But, most importantly, you get the inside scoop on the data-cleaning drudgery that was Excel and analytics before the DAX and Power Query data revolution. Miguel and Rob trade entertaining stories of how Excel gives people a competitive edge in the job market but somehow remains a fundamentally underappreciated skill during the educational years. After all, it's not just about the tool, what matters is what people do with it, how they use it, and how it has changed the trajectory of their careers. After hearing a few of these stories, you're going to want to send a tweet to Tom to encourage him to finally admit that Power Query deserves a spot in the Software Hall of Fame. This episode isn't all about Power Query, though as we also learn a little about the eclectic taste in music our hosts share as well as some interesting tidbits regarding songwriting and the musical process. Miguel opens up about his passion for music and composition as he shares some personal insight into the process of collaborating and creating music in the digital world. If you listen closely, you can even hear some of his work spliced into this podcast in a musical first for us. Of course, you can hear Miguel's song: Someday, Somehow (feat. Chris Cron) in its entirety across multiple musical platforms. Be sure to give it a listen and share it with a friend. As always, if you enjoyed this episode, be sure to leave us a review on your favorite podcast platform to help others find us. He also has first hand experience on the health situation that's going on at our southern borders. #miguelescobar, #schoolboard, #whistleblower We're talking about things you need to hear.

Episode 32 of Season 2 of TALK JAM is JAM-packed!In our first jam, we discuss the viral video of Physicians' Assistant Miguel Escobar, who spoke earnestly at a recent Texas school-board meeting about the information we're all getting about Covid, why the facts are so out of whack with the truth, and what we all need to know before deciding how to school our children in the near future. His words are powerful, and we've tried to verify a lot of his claims! In our second jam, we talk about book marketing. "I can't think of anyone that uses Excel that wouldn't benefit from using Power Query" - Mynda Treacy How do you go from art studies in a beachside suburb school, to accountant at two London investment banks to a YouTube following of 326,000!? Mynda and I cover lots of ground in this conversation. We have had similar journeys working overseas, working for banks, becoming accountants, getting hooked on Excel. Mynda has a huge following on YouTube and her online training business MyOnlineTrainingHub I ask the longest and probably oddest "Mpossible" question regarding the treatment of 01/01/1900 date. We both learn a Power Query feature thanks to Miguel Escobar. What would you do if your high school math teacher told you that the only thing you were capable of doing was flipping burgers? Ummm ... become the king of the kitchen, of course! Today Vanessa talks to Miguel about how he went from killing it in the restaurant industry to a career 180 as a stats analyst rockstar with the Ontario government, all while battling some deep math trauma and persistent imposter syndrome. If you’re ready to turn your fear of failure into your greatest motivator, then this episode is for you! About Miguel Miguel Escobar is a Senior Business Analyst with the Government of Ontario and is a graduate of George Brown College where he completed the Hospitality Management program with honours. Miguel has had a love/hate relationship with math going all the way back to high school. From failing many, many times to being told he’d never get it, he struggled with numbers and avoided them at all costs. Now, some 20+ years later, he has embraced math and uses it almost every single day in his job. The fear and anxiety that came with being labeled “not a math person” is in the past and he now looks for every opportunity to help others who might struggle through the same things he did.
