This week, we're catching up on movies and TV. Daffy Duck! Daisy Ridley! Daredevil! The Severance season finale! Deli Boys! Also, EJ's doing a Mission: Impossible rewatch and the Jason Statham Film Festival nears its end with Expend4bles, a movie that does not live up to its tagline. But that tagline is "They'll Die When They're Dead", and no movie lives up to that.
Directed by Scott Waugh, Expend4bles is the action/adventure film and fourth installment in The Expendables franchise, following The Expendables 3 (2014). Luke and Jae catch up on the 2023 movie where old blood met new blood, in this action packed ensemble which includes Jason Statham, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Megan Fox, Dolph Lundgren, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Randy Couture, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, Andy Garcia, and Sylvester Stallone. Armed with every weapon they can get their hands on and the skills to use them, The Expendables are the world's last line of defense and the team that gets called when all other options are off the table. But new team members with new styles and tactics are going to give "new blood" a whole new meaning.
The final episode of ExpendMaybles is here. Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened. This week, as Ryan Reynolds rides into theatres with the big screen release of I.F., we wind it back a few years to another movie he's in that adds a couple extra letters to that pair: 2017's Life, directed by Morbius helmer Daniel Espinosa, and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada and Ariyan Sanada. It's a space-set creature feature that aims to evoke Alien but doesn't quite hit those same classic heights. Is it still passable? Our hosts are split, as this unseen selection from Hayley's collection was a J Mo rewatch, and the movie plays a bit differently perhaps when you know its twists. Otherwise we're hyperfixated on live pro wrestling and the TV show LOST, so it's a pretty standard week around here. Also, has anyone else noticed that Ryan Reynolds kinda sucks? If you'd like to watch Life before listening to our discussion, it is currently streaming on Netflix in Canada at the time of publication. Other works referenced in this episode include Speed Racer, Party of Five, The Witcher, Expend4bles, Masters of the Universe, The Fall Guy, Jungle Cruise, Ghostbusters: Answer The Call, Love and Basketball, Planet of the Apes (2001), Big Brother Canada, I.S.S., Sunshine, Venom, Deadpool, Executive Decision, The Suicide Squad, Underwater, Passengers, Baby Driver, Rough Night, Hacks, Resident Evil, Starship Troopers, Free Guy, Two Guys A Girl and a Pizza Place, Red Notice, R.I.P.D., and many more. We'll be back next week with our first ever episode recorded live in the same room, as Hayley's come out to the coast to watch Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in IMAX, and we will have a full reaction recorded almost immediately after seeing the film in theaters. So look forward to that, as well as the week after, when we close out May by inducting Mad Max: Fury Road into the podcast canon. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Hey now, we have a new episode coming your way, this week we are going to take a look at Expendables 4...it's the latest movie in the franchise that features half of the original cast, half the action and (apparently) half the effects budget as well. It also asks the question, "Why the hell didn't they stop after the 3rd one?"

Megan Fox was the “It Girl” of the second half of the 2000s. When she showed up as the love interest in Michael Bay's Transformers, she quickly became one of the most desired women on the planet, but Hollywood didn't quite seem sure what to do with her for the longest time. While Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was a hit, she was famously written out of the third film. Her roles in movies like Jonah Hex fell flat, while her big star vehicle, Jennifer's Body, was a flop - albeit one that's been reappraised recently. While a lot was made over the fact that she compared her Transformers director, Michael Bay, to Hitler, there seems to be no love lost between the two, with him casting her in his two big-budget Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies as April O'Neil. They failed to launch an enduring franchise, and now Fox is mainly known for the notoriety of her relationship with Machine Gun Kelly. But, and here's the kicker - while her low-budget movies haven't been particularly well-received, her acting in them has often been quite good, surprising critics that otherwise pan the movies. With a prominent role opposite Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham in The Expendables 4 (aka Expend4bles), could a legit comeback be on the horizon? We dig into it in this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, written and narrated by Taylor James Johnson and edited by Juan Jimenez.

Jason Statham is The Beekeeper. Requests were pouring in for us to cover this ridiculous action movie so we did. David Ayer directs and Kurt Wimmer writes (he also was one of the credited writers on Expend4bles). The movie features bees and honey and plenty of bee talk. Statham is an actual beekeeper on the property of Phylicia Rashad. When Phylicia Rashad gets fooled into a phishing scam and loses all her money she shoots herself. This sets Statham out on a John Wick-style quest for revenge. It left some Lodgers laughing and other Lodgers screaming, “Not the bees!”. The movie also stars Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, and Jeremy Irons!
Expend4bles is the epitome of milking an idea dry. It's lazy, visually a mess, and its narrative is almost completely nonsensical. Worse, like the third entry in the series, Expend4bles doesn't seem to grasp what made people interested in its concept in the first place. We lose even more of the action stars we all love and replace them with even less interesting people. Sure, this one returns the R rating, but the blood and carnage are swallowed by the horrific green screen and ludicrous plot. Its greatest offense, though, may be its complete waste of the talents of Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais. If you have two of Asia's great action stars in your movie, then back up and let them make magic. Sly Stallone, who created the franchise and has served as its main star, is so disinterested in the proceedings that he's barely in the movie; when he is, he mostly sits alone in random vehicles. Exend4bles is wholly deserving of its seven Razzie Nominations and complete implosion at the box office. And, yet, I still love it. Damn you, nostalgia! Now, sit back, toast to Barney's memory with a Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale from North Coast Brewing Co., and equip your prescription scope! “Kill any of these people! Is it possible for any of them to die?” - Steve on the titular Expendables On this week's episode, after we figure out how to pronounce the title, we're chatting about the fourth, and likely final, film in the franchise, Expend4bles! Is it time to wrap up the franchise when the casting ‘gets' keep getting smaller and smaller? Why can't Jason Statham and Tony Jaa get some buddy action film instead? Why did the film team rely on so much wretched CGI? And how are we rooting for Sly's character after he straight-up murders a (more or less) innocent man? PLUS: Larry the Cable joins the next Expendables line-up! Expend4bles stars Jason Statham, Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson, Megan Fox, Dolph Lundgren, Tony Jaa, Eko Uwais, Andy Garcia, Randy Couture, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, Lucy Newman-Williams, and Sylvester Stallone as Barney; directed by Scott Waugh. Written and directed by Taran Killam, Killing Gunther is a mockumentary centering on a group of incompetent assassins who assemble to take down the world's best hitman. It is a wonderfully comedic and weird film that was unfortunately slept on by both critics and viewers. Grossing less than $200,000, Killing Gunther never found much of an audience. But it should have. Its cast of eclectic characters do more than enough to buoy the conceit across its modest 92-minute runtime. Throw in a delightfully off-the-wall turn from Arnold Schwarzenegger (he sings a country song!) as the titular Gunther and you've got yourself a damn good time. Now, sit back, sing some karaoke with a Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA from Stone Brewing, and hope Ashley gets well soon! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Bling Blake, and Capt. Those burly boys known as The Expendables are back almost a decade after their last outing in Expendables 3 (2014). We were definitely not going to cover Expend4bles, but then it scored a remarkably low 13% on Rotten Tomatoes, which made it essential viewing. The cast is getting downright geriatric, with a 77-year-old Sylvester Stallone, a 65-year-old Dolph Lundgren, and a 67-year-old Andy Garcia all trying to pull off some late-career stunts. Jason Statham does the heavy lifting in the action department, and he's lazily supported by Randy Couture, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, and Iko Uwais. This movie bombed hard for many reasons, which we will illuminate in this Hawt Take!

This series will die when it's dead. Which, if box office is an indication, is now. This week, Nando, DJ, and Diggins suit up for on last ride with the oldest action heroes that still wanted to do these for the movie event of the September, Expend4bles. They nitpick the plans, the guns, and of course the golden showers.

Expend4bles put up a franchise-worst number, and did little to boost the box office resumes of its stars. I look at the numbers, as well as the other movies in the top 10 and more!

We have never talked about "Stop Making Sense" on this podcast, which happens to be one of the favorite movies of all time for both of our hosts. So we go deep on that, with the new re-release, which you must see. We then do something entirely different by discussing "Expend4bles," which is just a hilarious title. Speaking of hilarious (and offensive, like "Expend4bles") we reboot the Trey Parker puppet terrorism comedy "Team America: World Police." Timestamps: 21:22: "Stop Making Sense" 1:00:11 "Expend4bles" 1:29:02 "Team America: World Police" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or griersonleitch@gmail.com. As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast.
We've got high and low culture here at Breakfast All Day, and we'll let you figure out which one is which. First, we review "Expend4bles," the fourth movie in the "Expendables" franchise and by far the worst. But we also get to discuss one of our favorite movies ever -- and one of the best of the year, even though it came out in 1984 -- Jonathan Demme's Talking Heads concert film "Stop Making Sense." It's in IMAX for one week in a glorious 4K restoration, then playing everywhere starting Sept. 29. Truly a must-see in the theater! And for our Patreon subscribers, recaps of "Ahsoka" and "The Morning Show." Thanks for sharing some of your time with us! *Thinking of cutting the cord? This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees comedian, actor, writer, director and future King of England, Mike Birbiglia, drop by the podbooth to have an extended, but very funny, natter with Chris Hewitt about Birbiglia's one-man show, The Old Man And The Pool, which is on now at the Wyndham's Theatre in London. They talk about that, about Mike's attempts to crack Ireland, about his movie Don't Think Twice (from 2016), and more. Then Chris is joined on Zoom by Brian Duffield, the writer/director of the very good alien/home invasion thriller, No One Will Save You, which hits Disney+ this week. And either side of those, Chris is joined in the studio by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer for an episode in which they further develop a plan to save cinema, try heroically to stretch the movie news section out to a decent length despite the absence of any movie news, and review Flora & Son, Dumb Money, Ballywalter, and The Expend4bles, which we regret to inform you appears to be the film's official title. Oh, and Chris has a few timestamps of interest for those asking. Bear in mind, these are approx, because of adverts and such, but Mike Birbiglia runs from 19:38 to 47:04 or thereabouts; Brian Duffield is 1:05:00 to 1:22:00, and there's a very special one for the guy who left us a glowing review on Apple's podcast store the other week, but nevertheless gave us two stars because we often forget to include timestamps. You, and he, can find that between 06:28 and 06:33. Enjoy!
We're absolutely mind boggled at the shoddiness of Expend4bles. Cassandro brings a flair to the Lucha Libre life. The Continental: From the World of John Wick has some big McShane sized shoes to fill. Finally, Still Up didn't put us to sleep. Note: At the time of recording SAG-AFTRA's guidance has not asked film critics and entertainment journalists to cease coverage.
