He's now here with Requstory, a platform that aims to help people write user stories fast. A day in the life of a business analyst at the European Central Bank, the sorts of projects he's working on, and whether banks can ever be truly agile How he moved from training as a scientist and wannabe process engineer to business analyst because he loved being close to the users & engineers What a business analyst actually does and how similar it is or isn't to being a product manager or product owner on an agile team How working on a big project & having to write loads of user stories led him to build a no-code tool to help him do that quicker.. and how interest from friends & colleagues made him decide to make it ready for primetime How he's managing the user feedback and trying to keep focused on delivering real value rather than any niche feature that comes up Some of the characteristics of a good or bad user story and how the ultimate point is always to be something that starts off a discussion When user stories might not work for you, the different types of stories you can use, what some of the alternatives might be & whether they're really just interchangeable And much more! The six categories of purchased services spend and why areas such as outsourced physician services and joint ventures require in-depth forensic reviews and expertise. Why putting together an RFP doesn't mean you're getting the best pricing and why bid analysis is vital. Why the only way to benchmark accurately is on the line item analysis. ‘'The biggest misleading area in purchased services is broad and irrelevant benchmarking.'' The cost savings available when quarterly or annual contract reviews are carried out (hint: we recommend you don't leave your contracts to expire). Why real-time measuring and monitoring is essential for effective cost management of your purchased services spend. ‘'You could go weeks or months with incorrect pricing, and no one would know about it.'' How the renegotiation of a medical waste agreement helped identify a $34,000 billing error buried as a ‘'price increase'' for one hospital. Resources:

What would you do if your high school math teacher told you that the only thing you were capable of doing was flipping burgers? Ummm ... become the king of the kitchen, of course! Today Vanessa talks to Miguel about how he went from killing it in the restaurant industry to a career 180 as a stats analyst rockstar with the Ontario government, all while battling some deep math trauma and persistent imposter syndrome. If you’re ready to turn your fear of failure into your greatest motivator, then this episode is for you! About Miguel Miguel Escobar is a Senior Business Analyst with the Government of Ontario and is a graduate of George Brown College where he completed the Hospitality Management program with honours. Miguel has had a love/hate relationship with math going all the way back to high school. From failing many, many times to being told he’d never get it, he struggled with numbers and avoided them at all costs. Now, some 20+ years later, he has embraced math and uses it almost every single day in his job. The fear and anxiety that came with being labeled “not a math person” is in the past and he now looks for every opportunity to help others who might struggle through the same things he did. Small Biz Matters – a half hour program each week where you can work ON your business rather than IN it.with Alexi Boyd, broadcaster, advocate and small business owner.Date: 2 June 2020 Do you know what FOREX stands for? Do you watch the Australian Dollar go up and down and not truly understand what it means? Do you think your small business is unaffected by minor fluctuations in the Aussie Dollar? Think again. Even those of us who DON’T have an e-commerce site or deal with international clients or corporates paying invoices in USD, are affected by changes to the dollar. Without realising it you’re actually having  an effect as an exporter importer. How? Think about your suppliers - digital subscriptions paid in USD, goods or services bought on ebay or those clients you sell to overseas … it all adds up to changes which can potentially have big impact on your cash flow. So let’s really find out how the foreign exchange rate (that’s FOREX) affects your small business and what you need to know to keep an eye on it. Rylan Dawes is the VP of FX for Airwallex and he’s here to teach us all we need to know about FOREX. Welcome to the show Rylan. Topics we’ll be covering: What is foreign exchange risk, and what are some of the ways small businesses mitigate that? Forex is simply when you conduct a business across borders. The risk happens when the exchange rate changes between when you make the transaction and when the funds are settled. Small business need to be aware of things like lag times Invoice dates This has a huge cash flow impact What types of products should small business know about to mitigate risk Broadly how do Banks (traditional) vs other, newer options An example of volatility has been the the FX market in COVID-19? Why does small business need to keep an eye on that volatility? You can make a loss in a matter of days when there is extreme volatility Purchases included like software subscriptions - subscription creep Jan - lowest level of volatility and within 2 weeks, a spike not seen since GFC How do you keep an eye on that volatility? Examples of tools - price alerts to buy FX to offset the volatility in costs from FX movements It works on both directions - sales and marketing What is the impact of currency volatility on small businesses today? What is your advice to small businesses who do not have any dedicated finance teams or large finance teams to still be kept educated on FX movements? Who can you have on your side to support you? STRATEGY: Be aware of what you buy and sell in other currencies Be prepared if you have a large transaction coming up in say, 30days time Educate yourself in the tools you can use (alerts about exchange rates at a certain rate) Establish if you’ve got any natural hedges (revenues or costs in USD). Rather than converting all of these immediately Reduce the FX risk but you may have additional costs with moving money around And that’s when you should seek the help of an expert... Welcome back! On this episode of Above and Beyond, I interview Hunter Barns. Hunter is a former Navy Submariner who transitioned into a Senior Business Analyst role (one of several possible consulting careers for military officers) at Kearney, a global management consulting firm in 2014. Hunter launched his career as a consultant focused mostly on the analytical piece of consulting before transitioning into more of a client-facing role. We begin our conversation discussing how Hunter transitioned to Corporate America directly from a shore tour in Bahrain. "The day I started terminal leave was the day I interviewed with my current employer," he said. We discuss how preparing to transition from abroad IS doable and how starting research early can help combat the hesitancy of a direct transition from Asia, Europe, etc. Hunter also explains Kearney in more detail. What is management consulting? What does a Senior Business Analyst do? Who does Kearney work with? Hunter walks us through why he decided to work for the company, which leads the conversation down a path to discuss one of the core functions of consulting: analytics. He reviews the "consultant tool-kit" he uses in his role and gives an interesting example of a dive deep in a problem set for a customer. We also discuss the question, "Can those who don't have an analytical background excel in consulting?" (Excel being a pun). A few years into his career at Kearney, Hunter's company allowed him to take a year off to earn his MBA at Oxford before returning to apply much of what he learned in that program. Lastly, he gives advice on how to challenge yourself to get better every day! Hunter is an interesting guy and gives some great insight into the world of consulting. Enjoy listening! His multifaceted talents include Website Process and Content Manager and Program Developer for XYZBuys.com. He was born and raised in Jacksonville, FL. Danâ??s parents owned a small business which encountered its share of glory and gloom. At an early age, Dan observed the emotional and physical challenges of being an entrepreneur. Sometimes careers start years before anyone even knows it. In his junior year of high school, Dan was elected treasurer of the student council, making him manager of the school store that provided funds for the student council activities. Prior to starting his role, he inherited a $600 deficit from the prior year, and was thrust into restoring stability to store operations plus repayment of the deficit. This one year taught him about inventory ordering and control, vendor management, accounting, budgeting, and developed people skills as the store was dependent upon volunteers. At the end of his junior year, the deficit was repaid, and the store sported a $1500 surplus which was not bad for 1970-1971. Dan graduated from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, NC, with a B.S. degree in Mathematics and Finance minor. He was a member of Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. In this first episode of our series on podcasting, Jason Hartman hears founder of Palladium Education, Inc, Alex Haddox's story of how he began podcasting to enhance his business. One of Alex's favorite things to do was radio shows and was in public relations for many years. He began marketing his seminars through podcasts and building his brand. Alex currently has over 200 podcasts. He explains how he tracked downloads, noting that it takes a while to build up a listening audience. He learned how to engage the audience and to fulfill their desire for more episodes. He came up with the idea of doing a Quick Tip every other episode. As he posted these podcasts, his listening audience increased six-fold. He encourages consistency and diligence, explaining that having a passion for it, for the content, is very important for success. Alex calls podcasting a “long game.” He has his own equipment, does his own editing and uploading, and has low overhead costs. By joining a podcasting network, Alex's audience doubled. He explains the benefits of the podcast network, i.e. the support and rapport that is built, leading to a close knit group of podcasters. All in all, Alex has experienced great success with his podcasts, having never spent money on advertising for his show, and managing the process himself. Alex Haddox's diverse background led him to founding Palladium Education, Inc., Workplace Violence Prevention and Crisis Intervention Training. Mr. Haddox spent nearly a decade working for Amgen, Inc., one of the world's largest multinational biotech firms, as a Senior Business Analyst and Senior eLearning Analyst. Among his many projects, he designed instructor-led and e-learning training modules for the Global Regulatory Affairs and Safety Education and Development department. Mr. Haddox was also the Product Manager and co-founder of the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC). He was considered one of the world's leading computer virus experts, traveled worldwide on speaking engagements, and appeared on national television programs including Good Morning America, CNBC, the Discovery Channel and Fox News Network. He has been quoted in innumerable print publications from The New York Times to USA Today and was on the Advisory Board to the industry's leading publication, “Virus Bulletin.” Mr. Haddox is a skilled martial artist and self-defense instructor. He has nearly two decades of combined traditional martial arts training in multiple styles including American Kenpo, Hapkido and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Mr. Haddox also holds firearms instructor credentials from the National Rifle Association.
