From the frozen east of Canada, a single man flies a banner in the chilly province of Quebec. The flag shows the hybrid symbol of Phyrexia and Mirrodin as one. Emmanuel, aka MunsuLight, and I chat about his budget brew of Jor Kadeen, First Goldwarden that focuses on using Living Weapon and For Mirrodin! cards to beat down the opponent through a hybrid of creature token and equipment value. We then discuss budget brewing, how newer frame treatments allow us to bling out our decks, the numerous new Boros cards that make our decks go brrrrr and finish with Pokemon Nuzlocke talk. Come join in the fun! You can find MunsuLight on Twitter and his Jor Kadeen deck on Moxfield.

Andy and Anthony talk about their first impressions of Phyrexia: All Will Be One, which is full of new takes on classic mechanics from Mirrodin block. They talk through all the mechanics and themes of the set and their applications in Cubes. The set features a few relatively insular mechanics: Toxic and Corrupted, which make sense in an environment where they're concentrated to a critical mass. While these are likely to be passed on by many cube designers, a change in Wizard's design philosophy angled towards thematic singleton environments makes them more viable than they might seem. I sit down with former Magic designer Tyler Bielman to talk about the design of original Mirrodin.
Star City Games' Cedric Phillips and Patrick Sullivan are back for their deep dive on Magic's 30th expansion — Mirrodin! The duo share their thoughts on Affinity for Artifacts, Imprint, and Entwine as mechanics, discuss how the debut of Equipment changed Magic, and why Mirrodin is a shining example why both design and development are equally important during the creation of a Magic set.
With Vorinclex bringing the Phyrexians back to Magic Story after a decade, it's a good time to catch up some newer story fans on what New Phyrexia is all about. In this episode, we cover the backstory from the six sets that chronicle the rise and fall of the plane of Mirrodin. Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to the Goblin Lore Podcast! Back in our forty-ninth episode, Alex and Joe discussed a goblin character that we had not physically seen yet in Magic: the Gathering lore – Krark, of the Mirrodin goblins – and the clan he founded and inspired. This episode looked at the Gambler's Fallacy in the real world! Hobbes had been unable to join and was particularly upset as Krark is very dear to him. So last week we returned to this topic with a very special guest (Orcish Librarian). We start our discussion of why we all suck at identify randomness and had to endure Hobbes's wild theories on the development of Krark as it relates to a famous Mathematician who flipped a lot of coins. This week continues with tangents, wild theories about another Magic Character and a lot more on chaos. Again we would like to state that Black Lives Matter (with a link to where you can offer support both monetary and not). Ahead of the Mana Curve: A Magic The Gathering Commander Podcast
Oh you like Mirrodin? Name 10 birds from Mirrodin then.
In one of the biggest (and most surprising) ban announcements since Mirrodin, Standard, Historic, and Pioneer have all been turned on their heads. Is Uro going to loom over each of those formats? Uh, yes. The answer is yes. But there's other stuff that we talk about too! Thanks as always to Wave Sunray for our music.
Cycling is a powerful ability, right? Turn your card that doesn't do anything at the moment into a different one? If only there was a permanent that synergized with it. Well, you're in luck! Two of them were printed at the same time, and in a set with powerful cycling cards. Coleman and Jason slide into 2002's standard metagame to take a look at the deck that defeated Mirrodin-era Affinity at the peak of its powers - Astral Slide!
Solemn Simulacrum is a Commander all-star, Standard player, and general fan favorite... and we brought it back in M21! But how was this card designed? I tell the story of how it began, talk with the designer, and delve into the original Mirrodin card file! A big thank you to Jens Thorén for providing his contributions to today's episode. It was incredible to get his thoughts on a card he created. Additional thanks to Brian David-Marshall. He knows why. If you enjoyed this, please follow me here by subscribing! Welcome to another very special episode of Commander ad Populum. Commander for the people, by the people, for the people. This week's Community section I extend my thanks to all the listeners, supporters, those who submitted show topics, deck lists, sponsors and everyone else that has made Commander ad Populum possible! The last year of solo podcasting have been a pleasure. Here's to another year of interacting with the people, for the people. The Technical section this week looks at mechanics that were introduced in the set Mirrodin. Affinity, Entwine and Equipment. Today's set Retrospective highlights: Mirrodin! One of the most broken sets of all time! We look back on a time when Magic was suffering very badly from players leaving the game. A time when there was nothing like Commander to keep player engaged until the next standard rotation. If you'd like to give me your thoughts on today's topics, hit me up on Twitter @CadPopCast. You can find me on Facebook, here: Facebook.com/CadPopCast. Both the Twitter and Facebook feeds have threads for each episode of Commander ad Populum. Let me know what you think. If you'd like to support Commander ad Populum or my altered art Magic card business, you can pledge on Patreon, here: Patreon.com/CadPopCast. There are a bunch of great benefits associated with being a patron. Especially if you're into altered art cards! Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome to the Goblin Lore Podcast! In our fifty-eighth episode, Joe and Alex discuss Memnarch's Panopticon from the Mirrodin stories, how that relates to the philosophical discipline and surveillance idea of the panopticon by Michel Foucault, and what that all has to do with those handy-dandy video doorbells we all seem to have on our houses now. Because the creepiest thing to think about for Halloween isn't what you can see, but what can see you... ____________________________________________ We have a Patreon! Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome to the Goblin Lore Podcast! In our forty-ninth episode, Alex and Joe discuss a goblin character not yet physically seen in Magic: the Gathering lore – Krark, of the Mirrodin goblins – and the clan he founded and inspired. This clan of goblins was the one that adopted Slobad when he was found cast out into the wilderness, but they are superstitious and irrational... Much like the Gambler's Fallacy in the real world! The two pick apart the little we know of this mysterious goblin tribe, the card Krark's Thumb, and how both of these are a good lens for viewing the "hot hand" or "evening out" probability theory of the Gambler's Fallacy in the real world. ____________________________________________ We have a Patreon! Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome to the Goblin Lore Podcast! In our nineteenth episode, the guys talk about that warm, squishy feeling known as friendship or camaraderie in relation to Slobad, goblin tinkerer of the Mirrodin cycle of stories. They talk about "Known Associates" and how simply being an acquaintance to a group can relieve some of the social pressure of friendship, as well as how we acquire and select our friends, and can be compassionate for and appreciative of others' differences. If you want to find friends in your area who play and think about Magic: the Gathering, hit up Mike "The Connector" Linnemann on Twitter. We used these articles from the MTG Salvation blog as part of our prep, as well as the actual story cycle. Thanks to the inimitable Jay Annelli for his extensive research to help fuel this discussion. This is our second in our series of legendary Goblin Profiles. The first was in Episode 6, on Krenko, mob boss of Ravnica. ____________________________________________ Remember: we've reached 300 followers on Twitter, so we'll do our next giveaway soon! Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome to the Goblin Lore Podcast! In our seventh episode, the guys run down the lore of artificial planes, including Rath, Phyrexia, Mirrodin, Serra's Realm, and Nicol Bolas's Meditation Realm. Hobbes then brings us into a discussion about mindfulness and making your reality what you want it to be, so you too can feel like a planeswalker in your daily life. Hello Internet, and welcome to Episode 12 of the Snow-Covered Lands Podcast! Apparently doing a large and well-loved set last week was just not enough for us, as this week Nick and Eric are covering another one: Mirrodin! For a set that is known for it's artifacts and extremely high power level, Mirrodin is actually a very unusual set full of cards that are 'build around' in just the way us Commander players love. There are few mechanics and legendaries in this set, so the majority of the show is just a deep dive into all sorts of wackiness (and, as it turns out, some of Nick's most hated cards! I'm looking at you Mind Slaver..). Thanks so much for listening, and until next time, brave the snow friends!
MTG Pro Tutor - Insights, Tips & Advice from Magic: The Gathering Pros
Steve Hatto is 34 years old and started playing Magic in Mirage. He played off and on like many do until he came back for good in Scars of Mirrodin. His goal was clear at that point - make it to the most prestigious events that Magic had to offer. There was, however, one problem: at his first FNM there were only 3 players… Steve lives in Luxembourg. Click to Tweet: I got a ton of value from Steve Hatto when he shared his story on #MTGProTutor! Listen here: http://bit.ly/mtgprotutor-ep232 First Set Mirage Favorite Set Urza's Saga Favorite Card Cryptic Command Early Challenge Finding players to test with. Steve finished in the top 8 of his first PTQ after coming back. Finding players with similar goals was rough. He focused on being polite and making friends at events. Magic Milestones First GP top 8 in 2015. Steve learned that mindset is huge to traveling up. Steve accepted that he's pretty terrible at Magic. He also realized that he focused too much on doing well. Worst Magic Moment Travelling to Pro Tour Nashville, Steve's flight was delayed several times and then canceled. He made the best of it by sneaking into the business hugely. Proudest Magic Moment Luxembourg doubled its player base and went from 1 store to 3. What Have You Learned From Magic Approaching situations with the acceptance that you don't always have total control over the outcome. Biggest Mistake Players Make Forgetting to lay lands. But beyond that people will follow up a mistake with another mistake out of embarrassment. How to Effectively Prepare for a Big Event For Modern, Steve knows his deck and can pick it up and go. This is only possible by practicing a lot in between events. Parting Guidance Figure out what your goals and then see what's missing to get you there. Play Magic a level you enjoy. Matthew Pope started playing Magic during Scars of Mirrodin and his first Launch Party was Magic 2012. Innistrad was the first pre-release he attended (and ran) at his local game. He was taught by a friend in college (the last 2 years of high school) and has come a long way with 1 Grand Prix Top 8 which was a 2nd place finish at Grand Prix Barcelona 2017. Matthew lives in the United Kingdom. Click to Tweet: I got a ton of value from Matthew Pope when he shared his story on #MTGProTutor! Listen here: http://bit.ly/mtgprotutor-ep202 First Set Scars of Mirrodin Favorite Set Innistrad Favorite Card Geist of Saint Traft Early Challenge Mulligan decisions. Matt noticed that even as he got better at mulligan decisions, he would revert back in high stakes games. Worst Magic Moment Matt attended a PPTQ and went 4-0-1. He wins the quarter finals and plays the best player in the room in the semi-finals. In game 3, Matt chokes and he missed the RPTQ invite. It was so close and the burn was real. Matt didn't attack based on a bluff from his opponent. Matt learned to play around what he should and ignore what he can't play around. Proudest Magic Moment Top 8 at Grand Prix Barcelona 2017. Biggest Mistake Players Make Playing around cards when it doesn't matter/wont make a difference. Also, deck selection without enough time to get good at it. Parting Guidance Don't let circumstance affect your fundamentals. Mulligan decisions are huge, so practice, practice, practice and don't forget what you've learned. Support the Magic Art Show Kickstarter project! It's produced by Vorthos Mike, Josh Krause of Original Magic Art, Rico Evangelho of Cardamajigs (@cardamajigs), and Brian Walters (@propsofprophecy). They plan to put on a full Magic: The Gathering art exhibit featuring original paintings, sculptures, drawings, concept art, and more at GP Vegas. It's going to feature the planes of Ravnica, Innistrad, Mirrodin, and Amonkhet. This is also the first event of what we hope to become a mainstay at Grand Prixs moving forward. Magic Art Show also aims to prevent original art from disappearing into the shadow. Let's keep Original Magic: The Gathering art in the light with this amazing exhibit. Check out the Kickstarter rewards at www.MagicArtShow.com and support the show with a few bucks. It's planning to be at GP Vegas June 14-18 2017 and they need your help.
Woo! Cosmic Larva in 2020! It's got to be better than the Desecration Elemental, right? Guys? In this episode we're finishing off our look at Modern Masters 2017! The whole set looks like a lot of fun to draft. There are a few more rarity shifts to discuss, looking at how the overall strategies of each allied color pair overlap with each other, and more jaw-dropping and reminiscing. Ah yes, good stuff. But that's not all! After that we're doing another Mythic Conscription, this time for the oddball final set of the Mirrodin block, Fifth Dawn! With its Beacons, Bringers, Sunburst, and assorted nonsense, what's going to be mythic? What's fine as a rare? How much disagreement can you fit into one episode? Why does Mike REALLY play Magic the way he does? Let's find out! It's time for a new episode of The Mana Pool! We've got a brand new Magic Mad Lib, except this one was written by Chewie for the first time ever! Be afraid, it's based on some of his recent experiences. After that we're doing a Mythic Conscription of the first modern artifact-centric set, Mirrodin! This set is a little weird. So many of the rares are super lame and could never be Mythic...and then you get to the artifacts. Who'd have thought the artifacts in the artifact set would be massively overpowered? As we tend to do with every Standard rotation, we're going to take a look at all the things that we won't be hearing about any more. Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Besieged, New Phyrexia, and Magic 2012 are all gone, and that means no more Titans, Infect, Elesh Norn, Bloodthirst, Heroes, Slagstorm, Ponder, Swords, and ALL KINDS of other stuff! To help us out with this discussion, we brought on everyone's favorite podcaster, Chris Lansdell (@lansdellicious). And I'm glad we did, because this show was entirely too much fun.You may notice a very small difference in the intro. That's all for you, Myke Okuhara!Oh yeah, be sure you hang around until the end. This is one crazy episode we've got here for you, folks! New Phyrexia has been completely spoiled, and we decided to have fun with it this time. To that end, everything in this episode is a look at the new set, no exceptions (except for all the tangents, of course). I mean it, we had no other topics this time around, nothing else we wanted to talk about, not even listener mail! New Phyrexia is serious business, much like the internet. And when Brian steps away for a few minutes on baby business, I bring in the heavy hitters. We're joined by a pair of old friends (podcast whores) to look over all this new stuff. First off, joining us for a short while from his car, we have Eric of Many Names. Rubber pants are optional, of course. Then we're joined by none other than our favorite Ben Shout-Out recipient...Ben! Known as Panahinuva on forums all across the internet, he had a class let out early and was able to join us for the second half of the show.So yes, we're just crawling with dorks. It was really a stupid amount of fun having these guys on the show to talk about the compleation of Mirrodin, you guys are gonna enjoy it! Find out which card makes Mike want to go lie down for a while, causes Brian to wish suicide on his opponent, and forces Dirk to consider rage-quitting. Also find out which card has flavor implications that had me laughing uncontrollably for a long time. I blame Ben and his roommate, personally.New Phyrexia Visual Spoiler:http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/articl ... a/spoiler#Oh, and just because I forgot to mention it this episode, don't forget that we still have lotsa free stuff to give away for random reasons. We are living in an age of villains. In case you haven't noticed, the bad guys are winning. The Eldrazi are free. Nicol Bolas is still scheming. And now, the Phyrexians have taken over the plane formerly known as Mirrodin. During these dark times, who do we turn to for hope? The planeswalkers? Bah. Since this new breed of 'walkers came to light, the heroes haven't had much in the way of victory. Dark times indeed. To combat this, today we will remember the heroes of yore. The ones who fought against, and triumphed over, the evils that now beset us daily. Powerful planeswalkers, mere humans, and even artificial beings that we used to look to when things were at their darkest. Perhaps this discussion will inspire a new hero to step forth and save us. Is there a man among you here? Is there not one who values courage over life?Whoa, I sort of went off the deep end there. And did I quote some Protomen there at the end? That's the song featured in this episode, how appropriate. Huh, I need to start sleeping more. Right then, back to the episode. We also have a brief discussion about the new Wizards event scheduling, particularly how it relates to a certain other high-level tournament series. Then we've got the New Phyrexia preview cards that have been spoiled! Yay! There aren't many, but see which one had Dirk quite literally flustered. Also, I used the word "eidetic" during this episode. Go me.Announcement about 2012's Tournament Structure:http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/news/041411aNew Phyrexia Visual Spoiler:http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/article.aspx?x=mtg/tcg/newphyrexia/spoiler#Free stuff mentioned at the end of the episode courtesy of Top Deck Games in Kernersville, NC. After a mess of emails, we've got those first two cards from the set code-named Action, which everyone has already seen. But of course, we have to give you our take on it. Then there's a look at the Event Decks, a new product from Wizards, but that's not the important part. And really, this isn't the important part either. But this is the main topic! Brian opened up a Scars Sealed pool, consisting of 3 packs of Scars and 3 packs of Besieged. We're gonna take a nice long look at it and see what we can come up with. Turns out we came up with two different decks, just so you know. If you'd like to see the pool in its entirety, please direct yourself to the forums. The link is right down there. I'd like to start off by apologizing for how scatterbrained I sound in this episode. I had just gotten back from the MAGfest trip roughly AN HOUR before we started recording, so I was still not quite with it. But that aside, we started off with a Mad Lib that Tosus wrote for us that had us giggling like idiots as per usual. Thank you Tosus! Then there's short Star Wars retelling featuring our faces that Patrick sent us that had us rolling in the floor laughing. You can see it here:http://sendables.jibjab.com/view/337a8koVbYL4PoLzAfter the rest of the emails, I go off on how awesome MAGfest was. It really was great. If you're interested, the website is here:http://www.magfest.orgAnd after all that stuff, we finally get into the heavy Mirrodin Besieged previews. And there is some crazy stuff here, let me tell you. Next episode won't be previews, so you better get enjoy these while you can. What's that? A live episode? Where did this come from? Well honestly it came from Brian's house, but that's not important. Due to a lack of Dirk during this episode's recording, Brian decided Mike and I should roll over there to play his newly-bought Scars of Mirrodin Intro Packs. He had Myr of Mirrodin, Metalcraft, and Phyrexian Poison. We played a three-man game, then traded decks and did it again, then traded again and did it one more time. It was a lot of fun, and you'll get to hear some of our usual nonsense, including me trying to coax Brian's wife to actually say something on the air. It's host vs host in the Great Multiplayer Card Debate! We each pick and defend cards we feel are the best multiplayer choices from Scars of Mirrodin. Each host states their case why their choice is superior, and also gets...
Hello again, and welcome to the show notes! This is Mike, filling in on this for Chewie while he puts the finishing touches on the previous episode (the secret ingredient is love). When Wizards decided to go back to Mirrodin for another block, of course they had to have in mind what had come before. Today we all take the time to think and talk about cards from the original Mirrodin block that would be really awesome (or possibly miserable) to have around in this modern age, and also discuss the most probable reasons why things just can't be that way.As always, we include in our ramblings some responses to listener emails, comments on notable Magical news, and the ever popular rant on a touchy subject. Also - and I don't even remember what started it - Dirk, in his alternate role as the Greatest Ever, leaves us with one of the most truly amazing final thoughts we've ever had the pleasure of pondering.Thank you all for reading, and go listen to some podcasts!Intro Music - Diamond by Swift - http://www.swift-band.comForum thread for this episode: http://cardshark.freeforums.org/episode-151-why-the-good-old-days-won-t-work-now-t603.htmlCheck out our archive at http://themanapool.libsyn.comEmail us at themanapool@cardshark.comFollow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/themanapoolVisit Cardshark! http://www.cardshark.comRead Chewie's 60 Card Challenge blog posts at http://themanapool.libsyn.com/category/60%20Card%20ChallengeCardshark Member Promotions: http://www.cardshark.com/Promotions/Member-Promotions.aspxSubscribe to our RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/themanapool

This episode marks the somewhat-awaited return of Brian's Magic Mad Libs! We also take a look at the changes to the Banned & Restricted List as well as some of the changes in the Comprehensive Rules. Don't worry, Mike actually had some notes this time instead of just randomly poking through the list. And it's time for us to take a look at the full card list for Scars of Mirrodin and poke through it. We'll dig around, and any card that catches our collective eye is going to get discussed, starting with the new rare dual lands and ending with us all sort of meandering around the visual spoiler aimlessly. Sorry to break the streak, but due to extreme overwork there is not a guest host this week. Unless you count Zombie Chewie, who is filling in for Chewie this week. It's hard to tell the difference but trust me, he's there. Is two episodes in a row even considered a streak? We'll start over if work ever calms down for me. We are joined this week by Trevor and Tom from MTG Radio, another fabulous podcast on the MTGCast Network, one that focuses primarily on the excellent format known as Elder Dragon Highlander. If you're at all interested in EDH, you should definitely check them out. If you're not interested in EDH, you should listen to them anyway because they're awesome. Otherwise we wouldn't have them on the show, duh. You can find them here:http://www.mtgcast.com/?cat=63So this episode it's all about Scars of Mirrodin previews! Yes I know it's late, but I worked 75 hours last week, so I was delayed in getting it posted.
