What separates a truly prepared household from one that simply owns a lot of canned food? It's not the size of the survival pantry — it's the plan behind it. Most preppers invest time and money building up their food storage only to discover, in the middle of a real crisis, that they've been storing supplies rather than meals. When the pressure is on, the last thing a prepared family needs is to stand exhausted in front of a pantry full of disconnected ingredients trying to figure out what to eat. That mental drain alone could compromise your decision-making when it matters most. In this episode, Todd breaks down why a food storage plan is the missing piece in most preppers' preparedness strategy — and why the shift from stockpiling to menu planning changes everything. Drawing on over a decade of real-world experience managing structured household operations, Todd walks through the principles that make a food storage plan not just functional, but resilient under pressure. From building a workable menu around shelf-stable staples and canned food your family will actually eat, to the foundational principles that keep your survival pantry rotating and ready, this episode challenges you to think about food preparedness the way serious preppers do — not as a collection of supplies, but as a system. This is also the first episode in a three-part series, and Todd has a free downloadable template waiting for you. If your preparedness plan doesn't include a written food storage plan built around real meals, you're not as prepared as you think. Preppers understand that stewardship — of resources, of time, and of the people in their care — demands intentionality at every level, and that absolutely includes what your family will eat when the stores close and the stress is high. Don't wait for a crisis to find out your pantry full of canned food doesn't add up to a single coherent meal. This episode delivers the practical framework every prepper needs to turn their food storage into a true preparedness plan. Self-sufficiency looks different for every family, yet many people feel stuck trying to follow generic food storage lists that don't reflect how they actually eat or live. Over time, I've learned that the most effective food and household storage plans aren't built from someone else's checklist — they're built by paying attention to what your family already uses. In this episode, I share a simple, practical self-sufficiency strategy for building food, household, and personal care storage that actually fits your life. Instead of fear-based prepping or rigid rules, this approach starts by tracking what your family uses over the course of a month and letting that information guide your storage decisions. I explain why this method works for both planners and freestyle cooks, how it naturally adapts as seasons and family needs change, and why self-sufficiency doesn't require extremes or isolation. This is about stewardship, resilience, and reducing dependence on fragile systems — without overwhelm. You'll also hear why food storage has been most valuable for our family during job changes and unexpected financial or medical seasons, not hypothetical emergencies. This system supports healthier eating, fewer last-minute grocery runs, and the quiet security of having what you need already on hand. If you want a realistic, adaptable way to build self-sufficiency through food and household storage without panic buying or complicated systems this episode will give you a clear, manageable place to start. In This Episode, I Cover: Why generic food storage lists often fail real families working toward self-sufficiency The difference between fear-based prepping and practical self-sufficiency through stewardship A simple month-long method to track what your family actually uses for food storage planning How to track food, cleaning supplies, and personal care items to build household self-sufficiency Turning real-life consumption data into a custom family food storage plan Why seasonal food audits are key to long-term self-sufficiency and preparedness How this food storage system works for both menu planners and freestyle cooks Saving money through bulk buying, shopping sales, and intentional household planning How food storage supports healthier home cooking and reduces reliance on takeout Using pantry, freezer, and food storage inventory to confidently plan bulk meat purchases Key Takeaways: Self-sufficiency starts with understanding what your family already uses Effective food storage plans should reflect real habits, not generic preparedness lists Tracking household usage for one month provides clarity without overwhelm Food storage systems should adapt as seasons, schedules, and family needs change Practical self-sufficiency creates resilience, financial stability, and peace of mind Related Episodes: 25 | Concerned About the Food Supply? Most preppers have mastered the art of stockpiling beans, rice, and canned goods, but there's one critical ingredient missing from nearly every food storage plan that could sabotage your family's health during an emergency. While you've focused on calories and shelf-stable proteins, the challenge of storing adequate fats and oils for long-term nutrition remains one of the most overlooked aspects of comprehensive food storage preparation. This episode reveals why fats are absolutely essential for your body's vitamin absorption, immune function, and sustained energy—yet they present unique storage challenges that standard food pantry planning doesn't address. You'll discover unconventional sources of healthy fats that you've probably never considered for your stockpile, from surprising everyday items to strategic long-term solutions that extend far beyond basic cooking oils. Todd explores the shelf-life realities of various fat sources, proper storage techniques that maximize longevity, and homestead-based approaches for truly sustainable nutrition planning. Whether you're dealing with financial stress and relying more heavily on your food storage, or preparing for extended supply chain disruptions, understanding how to incorporate essential fats into your preparedness strategy could mean the difference between thriving and merely surviving. This isn't just about adding another item to your stockpile—it's about ensuring your food storage provides complete, health-sustaining nutrition when your family needs it most. Most preppers believe they have their food storage dialed in—beans, rice, canned goods, and long-term freeze-dried meals filling their pantries and storage rooms. But even the most dedicated preparedness enthusiasts could be missing a critical nutritional component that could undermine their entire survival strategy. While you've mastered the art of storing carbohydrates and proteins, there's a fundamental gap in your food storage that could leave you malnourished and weakened when you need to be at your strongest. True preparedness isn't just about calories—it's about complete nutrition that sustains optimal health during extended emergencies. In this prepper podcast episode, Todd reveals why fats represent one of the most challenging yet crucial elements of comprehensive food storage planning. You'll discover the specific nutritional roles that fats play in vitamin absorption, immune function, and energy production—knowledge that separates serious preppers from those merely stockpiling food. This isn't about adding a few bottles of cooking oil to your pantry; it's about understanding the complex storage challenges, shelf-life limitations, and strategic alternatives that ensure your food storage truly supports long-term survival. From unconventional fat sources you've never considered to homestead-based solutions for sustainable nutrition, this episode addresses the sophisticated nutritional planning that defines advanced preparedness. Whether you're facing a short-term supply chain disruption or preparing for extended grid-down scenarios, the strategies covered in this episode are fundamental to maintaining health and strength when your stockpile becomes your lifeline. These aren't theoretical concepts—they're practical solutions for the nutritional challenges that could determine whether your food storage sustains you or leaves you vulnerable when it matters most. Send us a textThe line between thriving wilderness and dangerous bear encounters often comes down to one simple thing: how we store our food in the backcountry. Grant Breidenbach from Bear Vault joins us to reveal fascinating insights about bear behavior and the science behind effective food protection strategies.Bears possess what scientists call "spatio-temporal memory" – they remember both where and when they found food sources. This remarkable adaptation serves them perfectly in natural settings but creates serious problems when they discover human food. With noses containing four times the scent receptors of a bloodhound and surprising intelligence, bears quickly learn that our calorie-dense snacks offer more reward for less effort than foraging naturally. As Grant explains, "Human food, not even once" should be our mantra when it comes to bears. We explore how traditional food-hanging methods have become increasingly ineffective as bears learn to defeat them – chewing through ropes, breaking branches, or even shimmying across lines to access suspended food bags. The Bear Vault's ingenious design, with its slippery sides and carefully engineered dimensions, creates a physical barrier bears simply cannot defeat. After trying and receiving no food reward, bears quickly return to their natural diet. Most powerfully, Grant shifts our perspective from self-protection to ecosystem preservation: "There's no such thing as a problem bear – there are problem people." When we fail to properly store food, we set bears up for dangerous behavior that often leads to their euthanization. One Colorado case study showed a 98% reduction in human-bear conflicts within five years after implementing canister requirements and education.Whether you're planning your first wilderness adventure or are a seasoned backcountry traveler, this conversation will transform how you think about food storage and bear protection. Join us in understanding that when we enter the wilderness, we're guests in the bear's home – and protecting them is our responsibility.Subscribe now for more insightful conversations about adventure, conservation, and responsible outdoor recreation!www.bearvault.comhttps://www.facebook.com/bearvaultcanistershttps://www.instagram.com/bearvault/Support the showCONNECT WITH US AT SUPER GOOD CAMPING:Support the podcast & buy super cool SWAG: https://store.skgroupinc.com/super_good_camping/shop/homeEMAIL: hi@supergoodcamping.comWEBSITE: www.supergoodcamping.comYOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqFDJbFJyJ5Y-NHhFseENsQINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/super_good_camping/TWITTER: https://twitter.com/SuperGoodCampinFACEBOOK GROUP: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SuperGoodCamping/TIKTOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@supergoodcamping Support the show

The best galley gear takes up little room and can do more thn one thing. And the Kuhn Rikon 4th Burner Mini Pot exceeds all expectations. If you have space for one more pot, this is the one I suggest. Summary This flexible bit of galley gear is worth having on your boat if you can make room for it. Wihile it won't replace a skillet or conventional pot, it may replace a tea kettle, vegetable steamer, and even serve as a mini canner. The Kuhn Rikon Mini Pot holds 3 quarts and is narrow enough to sit even on a narrow galley stove top alongside another pan. It has a spout top for pouring out hot water and an insert for straining (or steaming). The top is made of glass, perfect for checking on food without wasting propane by lifting the lid. The pot and lid handles are coated with silicone. They stay cool enough to handle without a pot holder. And the high-quality stainless steel resists staining and pitting. Over the years, I've bought one three times (no, I never wore them out; I've left them behind for others to use).  Take a look. You might find this clever bit of boat galley gear as useful as I do.  Links (Amazon links are affiliate links, meaning that The Boat Galley Podcast earns from qualifying purchases; some other links may be affiliate links): Kuhn Rikon 4th Burner Mini Pot (Amazon) - https://amzn.to/433dRgd Provisioning, Meal Planning, and Food Storage for Boaters Course - https://products.theboatgalley.com/products/provisioning-meal-planning-and-food-storage Eating Well with a Tiny Fridge Course - https://products.theboatgalley.com/products/eating-well-with-a-tiny-fridge The Boat Galley Cookbook - https://products.theboatgalley.com/products/cookbook The Boat Galley Cookbook (Amazon) - https://amzn.to/4gVJDiD Subscribe to the Boat Galley Newsletter! - https://theboatgalley.com/newsletter-signup-2 Click to see all podcast sponsors, past and present. - https://bit.ly/3idXto7 Music: “Slow Down” by Yvette Craig

Prepping for Kids | Episode 345 Teaching Kids Survival Skills, Food Storage, and Meeting Their Unique Needs Preparing for emergencies takes on a whole new dimension when you're prepping for kids. Not only do you need to think about their physical safety, but you also have to address their emotional well-being, comfort, and specific medical needs. Here's how to make your emergency preparedness child-friendly. Teaching Kids Basic Survival Skills Start by teaching age-appropriate survival skills that build confidence and preparedness without overwhelming them. Safety First: Teach kids how to recognize danger, call for help, and follow evacuation plans. Navigation Skills: Take hikes as a family to practice basic navigation using maps or landmarks. First Aid Basics: Show them how to use bandages, clean small cuts, and recognize signs of dehydration or illness. Turning these lessons into fun family activities will keep kids engaged while teaching essential skills. Food Storage with Kids in Mind When storing food for emergencies, consider your child's preferences and nutritional needs. Kid-Friendly Options: Include shelf-stable snacks like granola bars, applesauce pouches, and powdered milk. Comfort Foods: Familiar treats like fruit snacks or hot cocoa can provide comfort during stressful times. Portioning: Pack single-serve portions for easy preparation and minimal waste. Rotating food regularly ensures it stays fresh, and involving your kids in the planning can make them feel included and reassured. Entertainment and Medical Needs Keeping kids entertained and healthy during emergencies is just as important as providing food and shelter. Entertainment: Pack lightweight activities like coloring books, puzzles, or small toys to help them stay calm. Medical Needs: Keep a supply of children's medications, allergy treatments, and age-appropriate first-aid items on hand. If your child has specific medical needs, ensure you have extra supplies ready. Maintaining routines as much as possible, like bedtime stories or family games, can provide comfort and stability during a crisis. By focusing on these essentials, you can ensure your kids are not only safe but also equipped to handle challenging situations. Prepping for your children doesn't have to be overwhelming – it just takes a little extra thought and care!
