Marine Tanguy is the CEO of MTArt agency. At the age of 21, Tanguy became Europe's youngest gallery manager, working for Steve Lazarides, Banksy's discoverer. By 23, she launched her first gallery, De Re, in Los Angeles. Inspired by talent agencies like CAA and UTA, Marine founded MTArt Agency in London in 2015 at age 25. MTArt, a Certified B Corporation, is now the leading talent agency in the art world, working with global organizations and cities, nurturing an international community of art-lovers and collectors as well as diverse brands ranging from Apple to Hyundai and even the World Cup. The agency has expanded to the US and Middle East, earning recognition on the Sunday Times Power List. Supported by investors like Frederic Jousset and Saul Klein, MTArt was valued at over £35 million in its last fundraising.Tanguy is a passionate advocate for the role of the artist in our society, she wishes for art to become a part of our everyday experience. She published her first academic paper age 27 years old with Warwick University supporting a new way to value public art projects within cities. She also published her first book with Penguin encouraging a more active participation in our visual culture, all the while teaching visual literacy. Her talks include three TED Talks on how to transform cities with art, how social media visuals affect our minds and how harmful are the visual biases we see daily. She and Zuckerman discuss her talent agency for artists, diversified revenue streams, visual literacy, visual pollution, artist selection criteria, consensus, vulnerability in leadership, and what she's excited about! This episode is sponsored by Jil Sander.
Ceri is joined by Marine Tanguy, the pioneering founder of MTArt Agency. From managing a gallery at 21 to founding the art world's first talent agency at 25, Marine shares her journey of revolutionising how artists are represented and supported. Ceri and Marine talk about building resilience, visual literacy, and creating new opportunities for artists. Marine also opens up about overcoming personal challenges, including a public hate campaign while pregnant, and shares her innovative approach to artist representation. KEY TAKEAWAYS Marine built MTArt Agency on a philosophical foundation first, establishing clear manifestos about the future relationship with the arts and the alignment of medium and concept before focusing on business applications At 25, Marine created a new business model in the art world by shifting focus from gallery spaces to a service based agency, enabling broader opportunities for artists beyond traditional art sales Marine's experience of managing a hate campaign while pregnant led her to find strength in ballet, demonstrating how physical practice can help manage the mental challenges of leadership Coming from a teaching family background, Marine approached her financial education systematically, surrounding herself with knowledgeable investors who could contribute expertise beyond just funding Marine's approach to talent spotting comes from genuine enthusiasm - she describes herself as someone who rushes back to the office excited to champion new artists she's discovered and thinks that much of the art world today is lacking this type of enthusiasm. As one of the first B Corp certified companies in the art world, Marine used this framework to create measurable accountability in an industry that traditionally lacks formal regulation. Despite managing 50 artists and over 300 projects, Marine maintains a "log in, log out" approach to social media. Marine's company has grown to a £35 million valuation by creating opportunities across multiple sectors from public art to brand partnerships, whilst many more traditional galleries are struggling in the current market. BEST MOMENTS "We are in the art world where being enthusiastic is something that's actually quite rare. It's seen as either quite young or naive or too keen to a degree. But I love my enthusiasm." "The traditional way is really being challenged as we speak." "I haven't studied finance, but I was aware it was something that therefore I was not knowledgeable in, so I made a point of becoming knowledgeable in it." "I think realistically with talent, it's really a balance of hard work, ethics and research, but it's also a question of talent." "You just know when an entrepreneur walk into a room versus someone that has put a deck together with a few clever facts versus someone that has really walked in and you know that they can deliver what they're saying." "Making sure that they diversify, that they reach out as much to public art commissioners, to brands, to digital partners, like they really think outside the box." "Ballet is also muting your brain for an hour and a half, which is really good for your anxiety." EPISODE RESOURCES Marine is represented by United Talent Agency for her writing and TV career. She is the founder and CEO of MTArt Agency, an award-winning talent agency that specializes in supporting and promoting visual artists.Join us for a discussion on the powerful role visual imagery plays in shaping our opinions and perceptions. We'll explore why understanding this influence is crucial for critically evaluating the visual information we encounter daily. Additionally, we'll delve into how future generations will be constantly exposed to imagery and the importance of their ability to distinguish between authentic and misleading visuals. The average person sees about 10,000 commercial visuals a day. Marine's latest book, "The Visual Detox," is a must-read for those looking to reclaim their focus and enhance their daily experiences through thoughtful engagement with their surroundings. You can find out more about Marine at https://www.instagram.com/marinetanguyart/
We've all heard of a detox, where you attempt to eliminate toxins from your body through various means, but have you ever heard of a visual detox? Today's guest, Marine Tanguy, recently published a book called "The Visual Detox" and I was so excited to dive into the concept more with her! Marine is an art entrepreneur, speaker and media commentator and founder and CEO of MTArt Agency. After managing her first gallery in London at 21 years old and a career in visual arts, she founded her agency, the first of its kind supporting artists worldwide. Marine is a passionate advocate for the role of the artist in guiding the public through a world flooded with visual noise and the agency seeks to ensure artists are rightly recognised as the spokespeople for a visual age. We had such a brilliant conversation that will encourage you to think about the things you see every day!Marine and I are discussing:Why Marine wrote her book, "The Visual Detox"Being in tune with the visuals around you such as nature and artHow advertising influences us psychologically, especially as womenAI imagery and consciously consuming contentEquity and visual inequalityMaking art more accessibleSubconscious biases when viewing imagesYou can connect with Marine on Instagram @marinetanguyart, or her website at mtartagency.co.uk. Her book, The Visual Detox, is available here and in all other booksellers. If you've enjoyed this episode, please leave me a review and subscribe! Send us a Text Message.Did you know that the average person encounters 10,000 commercial images in a day? That neighborhoods where people have lower incomes tend to have more advertisements for unhealthy foods and have more stores selling and advertising commercial tobacco? That the majority of images we see of the African continent are mostly from Western sources? This is some of what I've learned from the new book, The Digital Detox, by Marine Tanguy, who is my guest in this episode.Manufactured visuals surround us everywhere we go, offline and online, and if we aren't vigilant, it is almost impossible not to be overstimulated and manipulated from when we wake to when we sleep. Naomi Klein said in an interview recently something that's stayed with me: “we've become machine food!” That visual of human machine food stuck in my mind while reading the Marine's book. Her book is essentially a guide on how not to become machine food. And according to Marine, a key to that is art, which helps us activate our critical thinking and our imagination, while also being a medicine for our spirits. Marine is CEO of MTArt Agency, a talent agency for artists. She has held high profile positions in the art world since she was 21, starting as a gallery manager of the Outsider's Gallery in London, which was the first to showcase the work of Banksy, and she was on a Forbes 30 under 30 Art & Culture list. The thread that runs through The Heart Gallery podcast is that art and stories are what bring us together and move our society forward into a more caring future. So of course I was so excited to talk to Marine. Marine's mission is to bring art out of what we think of traditional art spaces - galleries, theaters, museums, fancy places - and into the heart of society, art representative of everyone and for all. That is a mission we can all get behind. I hope you enjoy listening to Marine Tanguy.Homework from Marine: "Take a couple of minutes to close your eyes and think, "what have I seen today?" Try to understand how what you saw made you feel. This will help you to start to be aware of the impact that images have on you."Mentioned:- The Imagination Muscle by Albert Read- Humankind: A Hopeful History by Rutger Bregman- "The media is the message" - here's a great article about Marshall McLuhan, Neil Postman, Jenny Odell and others- The Body Keeps the Score, Bessel van der KolkConnect:- Marine instagram- MTArt instagram- Rebeka instagram- The Heart Gallery Instagram- Episode blog postCredits:Samuel Cunningham for podcast editing, Cosmo Sheldrake for use of his song Pelicans We, podcast art by me, Rebeka Ryvola

Marine is an advocate for artists since a young age; Marine Tanguy managed her first gallery at age 21 under Steve Lazarides, who discovered Banksy and JR and opened her first art gallery in Los Angeles at age 23 where she was lucky to be mentored by Michael Ovitz himself. After seeing the restrictiveness of the traditional gallery model, Marine launched MTArt Agency in 2015 to build the reputations of the most incredible artists and to inspire everyone with their art. She felt that the art world was too traditional in managing its talents and that the visual sector - that is, the urban realm, advertising sector and digital world - were poorly leveraged by visual arts professionals. MTArt Agency was born. Fast forward to today – MTArt Agency is a certified B Corp® award-winning talent agency is worth £35 million and is the art sector's leading talent agency representing some of the most talented, forward-thinking artists in the world, working with global organisations and cities, and nurturing its international community of art-lovers and collectors. Marine was awarded Forbes 2018 30 under 30 Europe: Art & Culture, UK entrepreneur of the year for the 2019 NatWest Awards and Woman of the Year 2021 by the magazine WOTC. She is a writer and keynote speaker on contemporary art and art investment. Her talks include two TEDx Talks on how to transform cities with art and how social media visuals affect our minds. Marine believes that art should be accessible to everyone, everywhere “art is not a luxury but an essential, and that is why you are passionate about democratizing art. “ Instagram marinetanguyart Website https://mtart.agency/ LN https://www.linkedin.com/in/marine-tanguy-303b4a103/ FB https://www.facebook.com/mtartagency/ Youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKaoMNR4638cTAsEXAs0T3Q --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/borntocreatepodcast/message

Marine Tanguy, CEO of MTArt Agency, spoke to Rudolf Falat, founder of the Voice of FinTech podcast, about disrupting the way visual artists get discovered and represented so they get the best value for their efforts and talent. Here is what they talked about in more detail: Marine - how did you get to what you do these days? You said in a recent interview in The Times that you believe “it's a thousand times riskier' being an artist than an entrepreneur.” Why? Visual artists are traditionally discovered through agencies and art fairs and represented by agents. Why do you think the current process needs an upgrade? What is MTArt Agency? How does it work? What is your focus? What kind of art? How did you start and continue to grow to the current state? What is your view on bringing visual arts to people's homes, such as Netgear´s Meural Canvas? How do you make money for the artists and yourself?

EPISODE 20 of 'All About Art': MTArt: Being an Artist, with artist duo Walter & Zoniel In this episode, I sat down with Walter and Zoniel, an artist duo represented by MTArt Agency. We talked about their art, which involves a multidisciplinary approach and often results in interactive and socially engaging installations. A central theme in their work is the sublime, but also the human condition through questioning our relationship with our surroundings. They work with different mediums by using nature or other tools such as handmade cameras or innovative printing techniques, which is also something we talk a bit more about later in this episode. Public art and accessibility are important themes for the duo, as they believe art is for everybody, so they enjoy creating pieces for the public domain. Marine Tanguy got one of her first tastes of art gallery management when she was just 21 years old, but she didn't like what she saw. She felt the traditional gallery model was "elitist" and didn't allow for works from all demographics. And so, she decided to change this by opening MTArt in 2015. It's an agency for up-and-coming artists, helping them pay for studios, showcase their work through public art installations, virtual galleries and commercial partnerships and find buyers. Young artists appear to like the idea: MTArt says that it reviews 200 portfolios every month in order to find the most innovative young talent. In June 2015, Tanguy founded MTArt Agency. Tanguy has stated she founded the company to provide a better supporting structure for artists outside the traditional gallery model. MTArt covers their artists’ studio costs, sells their works, implement cultural & commercial partnerships and offers their artists press exposure. In return, MTArt Agency gains commission on each piece the artist sells, and artists give one piece of art to the agency’s private collection each year. The agency reviews 200 portfolios of up-and-coming artists every month, with the value of the selected artists’ works growing on average 150% in value year-on-year. MTArt Agency currently has offices in London and Paris. Artists that are currently managed by MTArt Agency include French biodegradable mural artist Saype, French AI collective Obvious, David Aiu Servan Schreiber, Delphine Diallo, Amber Vittoria, Claire Luxton, Dejha Ti & Ania Catherine, Elisa Insua, Lauren Baker, Léo Caillard, Tiffany Bouelle, Leno Dothan, Jennifer Abessira, Ben Cullen Williams, Jesu Moratiel, Ugur Gallenkus, Andreas Tyrimos and Asiko. As well as their investment in artists, MTArt Agency has also partnered with household brands including Aston Martin, Christie's, Chloé, the Mayor of London, Network Rail, the Louvre and the City of Paris on special projects. Tanguy is a member of the Thousand Network, the Creative Industries Federation, The Association of Women Art Dealers and The Association of Women in the Arts. Tanguy also serves as a young patron of the V&A Museum and has been appointed Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Tanguy has delivered two TedX talks; on how to transform cities with art (2017), and on how social media visuals affects our minds (2018). In 2018 Tanguy was a recipient of Forbes 30 under 30 Europe: Art and Culture. In 2019 Tanguy was announced as the face of a new campaign for French luxury fashion house Chloe Tanguy has been commissioned to write a book on The Visual Diet, due for publication in 2020. The Visual Diet campaign explores the themes of replacing typical social media visual consumption with enriched visual art content.
