Duluth officials said they are proud of the city's newest public art, a mural called “Meet Me on Main” that is painted on the back window of the Nacho Daddy building, which is located on Main St. The officials say it allows people to step back in time to the old Duluth. Brenda Ehly is the artist behind the piece. She said she was inspired from a phrase on the city's seal that she saw when she first moved to Duluth. Ehly is no stranger to the Duluth art scene. Her notable pieces in downtown Duluth include: ♦ Dream Big mural at Hill Street & West Lawrenceville ♦ Painted bike rack at Hill Street & West Lawrenceville ♦ Two paintings displayed in Maple Street Biscuit Company♦ ♦ Interior & exterior signage at both Crave Pie & Harper Row ♦ Backdrop for the model train set at the Southeastern Railway Museum ♦ Pen & ink depiction of City Hall located inside City Hall as part of our permanent art collection Gwinnett County commissioners agreed to partner with the Georgia Department of Transportation on one proposed new interchange on an interstate in the county and to team up with the city of Buford on a draft report for another proposed interchange on a different interstate. One of the interchanges is the long-discussed proposed McGinnis Ferry Road interchange on Interstate 85 in Suwanee. The other is a proposed interchange on Interstate 985 at Thompson Mill Road in Buford. The partnership with Georgia DOT pertains to right-of-way acquisition for the McGinnis Ferry Road interchange on I-85. The interchange has been in the planning stages for years and advertisements calling for construction bids for the project are expected to be posted this year. The other project, with Buford, is further off, however. In fact, it only recently go the OK from federal officials to even be considered. Under the agreement, the county and Buford will jointly fund the creation of a draft project concept report on a proposed new interchange on I-985 at Thompson Mill Road. Each side will pay $500,000 for the study, with the county using 2017 special purpose local option sales tax funds for is portion of the cost. “Producing ‘American Son' is part of a season of site specific shows about moving forward in the face of adversity,” Live Arts Theatre's Co-Artistic Director Becca Parker said. If the name “American Son” is familiar, it was a 2019 movie directed by Kenny Leon and written by Christopher Demos-Brown. The movie was based on Demos-Brown's play of the same name. American Son' touches many avenues of life such as interracial relationships, being the product of an interracial relationship, and different levels of profiling by those in power as well as the public. The story centers around a bi-racial couple who must confront their feelings about race and bias after their son is detained by the local police following a traffic stop incident. Because of the language which is described as “severe adult,” other adult topics and moderate violence, the play is recommended for audiences ages 16 and up. The audience is also cautioned that the production contains racially charged language and an audio depiction of a shooting. Leading the production are Le Titia Sloan as Kendra Ellis-Conner, the mother of the “American Son.” R. Chandler Bragg portrays Scott Conner, the father who is estranged from Kendra. The cast is completed by Santiago Vargas as Officer Paul Larkin and Live Arts Theatre Pro Company member D. Norris as Lieutenant Stokes. The production opens today and runs through Sunday. Friday and Saturday evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday show begins at 2:30 p.m. Tickets start at $15. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service Southeast Region announced Tuesday that Georgia and Tennessee are two of 14 states that have been selected to participate in the expansion of a demonstration project to evaluate the impact of using Medicaid eligibility data to directly certify students from low-income households to receive free and reduced-price school meals. Historically, most students who receive these meals have been certified based on information they submit in an application. Officials say adding Medicaid to the list of benefit programs that can “directly certify” a student to receive free or reduced-price meals is a win-win for students, families, and school officials. This means less paperwork for families and fewer school meal applications for school districts to process and verify. The remaining 12 states selected to participate in this round of the project are Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Montana, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming. The newest round of this demonstration creates an important opportunity to further test the impact of Medicaid Direct Certification, which was first initiated through the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The Biden Administration is committed to expanding direct certification opportunities and certifying more eligible children for free and reduced-price meals without an application. Rain is On The Way in Puerto Vallarta We had our first measurable rain of the season last night, and water is welcome this time of year. Things are really dry and dusty and a good rain cures lots of ills, but soon, we will be complaining about the buckets full that are sure to be on the way. As you know or not, the rainy season kicks off on my birthday, June 15th. I’ll be watching that Cuates y Cuetes Web cam that evening to see if its arrived or not. Carbon Monoxide Alarms in Mexican Condos and Apartments I told you last week I got an email from a listener who was taking me to task over something I said about Carbon Monoxide alarms and here’s what he writes.. Hello! I really like the show and I have listened to most of the episodes. I have been wanting to write in for a while with suggestions for improving the show. What really triggered this was the misinformation you provided in the last episode about carbon monoxide detectors. You mentioned 3 sources of deadly gas, only one of which a carbon monoxide detector would be warn against: 1 - byproduct of incomplete combustion of cooking / water heater gas - this produces carbon monoxide. It is odorless, and supposedly what killed the people in Playa del Carmen. 2 - cooking / water heater gas - this is propane and although it is naturally odorless, it has a rotten egg smell added to warn people. If the landlord needed to replace a gas valve as you indicated, then it would be to address a propane leak. Propane is not toxic but could cause a fire. Also, it could cause asphyxiation by driving out all the oxygen - but the leak would need to be very, very bad and an explosion would be a greater concern. The carbon monoxide detector would not help for a gas leak. 3 - sewer gas - Many properties in town do not have drain traps in sinks or floor drains (p- or j-traps). This enables sewer gas to come back into the home. The danger is hydrogen sulfide, which is also poisonous at very low concentrations. The other problem with hydrogen sulfide is you stop smelling it after a short period of time, but the effects continue. The carbon monoxide detector would not help for a sewer gas problem. The only real solution for homes without drain traps is to flush a lot of water down the drain. ---In short, a carbon monoxide detector is only effective as a warning for bad gas appliances. If there's no gas used, then it is not needed. Then he goes on and gives me some tips on how to make the show better. Okay, well let’s see here, I’m a little disturbed by the word “misinformation” but let’s review if I could. On April 26th I talked about a situation [caption id="attachment_2967" align="alignright" width="300"] Carbon Monoxide Detectors For Condos in Mexico[/caption] where I was sure I had carbon monoxide poisoning when I stayed at an Airbnb in Puerto Vallarta. This was the episode featuring Nacho Daddy if you want to listen to it again. I did mention that there was a strong rotten egg odor in the unit when we opened up the place. And I’m sure that my mention of an odor triggered the email and response, and I concede that yes, maybe the rotten egg odor, had it been poisonous would not have been detected by the CO alarm, still, I know what propane smells like, and it wasn’t that. It could have been a number of things in the condo. The water heater was inside the unit, there was a stove and oven, so yes, there were appliances in the unit, so I’m pretty sure, the CO poisoning was a result of one of those appliances. So, I stand corrected, I suppose. The odiferous smell will not be detected by a CO detector as you write, but, are you suggesting I wasn’t poisoned? So, I guess what I should take away, what we should understand from this email is that CO is odorless and can kill you. If you have appliances in your condo or apartment, and you don’t have a CO alarm, you can die if there is a problem. If you smell something, it may or may not kill you, won’t be detected by a CO alarm and is often caused by poor plumbing, and can be solved by running water down the drain. Thanks for the note once again, I like getting emails and I hope that if any of you have a suggestion, or a criticism, or you catch me spouting off untruths, by all means, send me an email. Last May, I had an open mic event in front of Cuates y Cuetes. Actually I had planned to have the event a day earlier, but Cuates y Cuetes was closed for Mother’s day and we had to reschedule for the next day. So, I actually reached out to one of my friends in Vallarta, who does personalized tours and asked him if he could come down to the beach and talk with me, and you too of course. So he said yes, and it’s really good he did, otherwise, I would have been all alone, eating chips and guac, and drinking beer, all alone. Here’s my friend, Memo. Lira of Vallarta 101. Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Listen To The Podcast [caption id="attachment_2936" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Nacho Daddy, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] That music you were just listening to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, The [caption id="attachment_2021" align="alignright" width="300"] The Vista Grill, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] El Dorado Restaurant, and at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into the ever so romantic Vista Grill with those dramatic views of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors. Of course, at La Palapa you can enjoy that same view of the Los Muertos Pier all day long for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! This week I’m going to introduce you to three American Expats who found a way to make a living in Paradise. They are Sean Moore and Tammy Carruthers Prust, from Nacho Daddy Restaurant and Bar on Basillio Badillo on the Southside of Puerto Vallarta, and Catherine Caldera from the Boutique Theater located just above Nacho Daddy, ha, funny how I worked that one out. But before we get to them, let’s see what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 25th of April 2018. So if you are in town, you know the drill, head on down to Kelly’s Pour Favor at 6:30, and listen to some music, have a few pops with JR and me, and let my listeners know what you are doing in paradise. It’s always a lot of fun and they have that great rooftop patio that’s great for interviews. So don’t be shy, a couple of drinks will solve that, come talk to us and if you are a business in Puerto Vallarta, and you want to tell us what you do, what services you perform here, come on by and let’s talk. So that’s Tuesday May 8th from 6:30 till 8. I want to catch the sunset. But hey, if there’s a bunch of you, and you can make it interesting, I will forgo that Puerto Vallarta Sunset, just to bring you to my listeners. And by the way, I have quite a few great interviews set up, and a couple of daytrips I’m doing, but if you have someone who you think I should be interviewing, let me know, Send me an email at pvtravelshow@gmail.com or Puertovallartatravelshow@gmail.com, and I will do my best to bring you that interview. How Do You Read an ATM Touch Screen in Spanish? I got a message from my buddy Marty. And Marty has tried to use the ATM machines in Vallarta but is a little concerned because the touch screen is in Spanish and it confuses him a little bit. So, he asked me if I can help and yes Marty, when I get in town, I will take screenshots of the whole process. I’ll even use a variety of bank machines, so everyone can see the whole process, and I’ll bring that to you in the coming weeks complete with screenshots and arrows and all that jazz, so Marty, great idea. I’ll let you know when I have all that for you. Barry's Flying to Puerto Vallarta May 6th [caption id="attachment_2972" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Southwest Airlines to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] So, I made my reservations on Southwest Airlines out of LAX. It was $264.00 round trip. It’ a great price and you can take a second piece of luggage free. If you need it that is. I hope they can keep the service running but the last few times I’ve flown Southwest, the plane was only half to three quarters full. Anyway, I also reserved my Airbnb and I did things a little different. I actually chose one that had no reviews. The pictures look good. It’s a new [caption id="attachment_2974" align="alignright" width="300"] The Cross above Puerto Vallarta[/caption] listing. It’s up on the hill downtown like above Calle Allende, Up on the way to the cross. It had air conditioning which is a must in May, a pool and a killer view of the bay from the pool area and the rooftop. So, we’ll see. I got the place for $32 US per night, and that included cleaning fees and taxes and all that jazz, so I will report back, but so far, for round trip air, and 9 nights at the b & b, I’m in for $ 552.00 US. Not bad. How to Protect From Being a Victim of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in Mexico When I was looking over these Airbnb listings I noticed how few of these places have CO detectors and smoke alarms. I don’t know if you heard the story of the family in Playa Del Carmen who died due to carbon monoxide poisoning they concluded, right? [caption id="attachment_2967" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Carbon Monoxide Detectors For Condos in Mexico[/caption] Here’s the story from The Washington Post Dated March 25th, Autopsies concluded an Iowa couple and their two children found dead inside their rented Mexico condo were victims of toxic gas inhalation, Mexican authorities said Saturday, and they reiterated no signs indicate foul play. The Quintana Roo state prosecutor’s office said all four family members staying on the Caribbean coast in Tulum were killed by asphyxiation, and that “any violent act or suicide has been discounted.” Kevin Wayne Sharp, 41, his wife, Amy Marie Sharp, 38, and their children Sterling Wayne Sharp, 12, and Adrianna Marie Sharp, 7, were found dead inside the condo, Mexican authorities confirmed Friday. Photos published by the prosecutor’s office show firemen in respirators and other authorities in anti-contamination suits examining gas connections and the unit’s oven. The Sharp family appeared to be dead for 36 to 48 hours when they were discovered, the office said. The family had been reported missing by their immediate family members early Friday morning to police in Creston, Iowa, which is located about 70 miles southwest of Des Moines. Kevin and Amy Sharp informed their family members in Iowa that they had arrived safely at their vacation condominium on March 15. I have a link to that story in the show notes. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2018/03/23/police-confirm-iowa-family-of-four-found-dead-in-mexico-condo/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.4a485a121c16 So that is a sad story for sure, and when you see their pictures, it’s really heartbreaking. So, what do we do to protect ourselves from this happening to one of us? The truth is, where I live in Southern California, a carbon monoxide detector is required in a home that I sell. Not everyone has one. But it is a requirement if you sell your home, or if you are a landlord. The last time I was in town, I’m sure I had a Carbon Monoxide Poisoning moment. I was staying in an apartment that I have rented before, Airbnb, and I knew this place had a certain rotten egg smell emitting from the drains from time to time. When we got there, Jose, the owner noticed the strong odor when he opened the place up, so he opened all the windows and aired it out. The next morning, when I got up, I went to stand up, and almost fell down. I was having a tough time focusing my eyes and standing up straight. I opened up some windows to get some fresh air, and then I started feeling like I needed to throw up, so I dry heaved for about 3 minutes. I mean, it didn’t make any sense. I hadn’t been drinking, I had a wonderful meal at Florios the night before, it was weird. But as I started to get more fresh air into the apartment, the better I started to feel. But wow, I’m pretty sure that happened to me. Later that day, when I was on the beach interviewing people in front of Cuates y Cuetes, I got a call from Jose asking if he could let a workman in to change out a gas valve. Hummm. I told him what happened, and suggested he get a CO detector. So, anyway, I’m not taking any chances. This time I’m bringing my own CO detector. $20 bucks. Done. Have you stayed in a place like that? You know, with the sewer smells coming up the drain pipes? I have more than once in Vallarta. So you be careful in these condos and Airbnbs. They are not required equipment. Down Vallarta BMX Bike Race is Back Down Vallarta will be returning to town, it’s all happening May 13 at 4:30 and they are going to be racing right past my bnb I believe. I’ll let you know. But it’s the BMX Dirt Bike race downhill, from the Cross on the hill above Downtown, down, to the Malecon. I have video of last year’s event in the show notes so check it out in the show notes or if you are in town. Catch the event. It’s free. And we like free. Okay we need to get on with this week’s show. These are places where good home cooking is dished out with a smile, English is spoken, a place where you walk in and see the person in charge actually working the floor. A place where you [caption id="attachment_2941" align="alignright" width="278"] Tammy Carruthers Prust, Nacho Daddy. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] are encouraged get together with a whole group of friends and have a group poker night, or a trivia night, listen to live music, hold charity events that everyone can get behind. A place that an expat can feel like it’s homey. It’s a safe place. A good, feel a karmic location. When I walked in to Nacho Daddy the morning of the interview, Sean and Tammy were wrapping things up, clearing off tables, serving beverages topping off coffee for a group of expats, there must have been 20 or 30 of them, and they were playing Bunco. You know what bunco is, it’s a dice game. They were all having a great time and well, it looked like it was the place to be, if you lived in Paradise, and you wanted to have comradery with your fellow Canadian or American Expat. [caption id="attachment_2937" align="alignleft" width="300"] Sean Moore, Nacho Daddy, Puerto Vallarta[/caption] So, I set up my microphone in the back of the restaurant, a very nice roomy space with a bar up front, a dance floor in the back and a kitchen in the very back that you can look right into. Comfortable seating, nice rustic décor, Clean bathrooms, just a real comfortable spot Like a Cheers for sure. Finally, Tammy and Sean get a chance to break avaw for a few minutes to talk with us so let’s go right now to Basilio Badillo 287, in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood on the Southside of Puerto Vallarta and meet Sean Moore, and Tammy Carruthers Prust at Nacho Daddy... I first met Catherine on my very first business trip so to speak in Vallarta. I was recording my first interviews and the show was in the infancy stages. I was sitting in Una Familia Restaurant on Libertad, having lunch and Catherine came in and sat down at a table near mine with her doggie, and after a time we struck up a conversation. She talked about the Boutique Theater, and I told her a little about my podcast. I love theater so, well, I do get some of you wondering why I do so many interviews of entertainment venues, it’s because I was really involved in the theater arts in high school. I went to school with folks like Kevin Spacey, of course back then, he was Kevin Fowler. I think his middle name was Spacey, but yet I digress. Mare Winningham, April Winchell, Clint Howard. I mean, it was brutal competing in a LAUSD, Los Angeles Unified School District Drama Festival those days let me tell you. I mean, if you were competing against Kevin Fowler, I mean Spacey in a serious monologue category? Ha! Yes, he was that good way back then folks. But seriously, I loved to get in front of people and perform. When I didn’t make the Taft High Men’s Volleyball Varsity team, one of my buddies said to me, Kessler, forget regular P.E., they need guys to lift girls in Dance Production. You have to wear a leotard, but all you need to do is lift chicks. Well, I was all in, right? [caption id="attachment_2938" align="alignright" width="300"] Kitchen, Nacho Daddy, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] So yeah, I’m in to the arts, sorry guys. Anyway, when I saw that Catherine was doing TED Talks at the Boutique Theater, I thought, you know, we talk about people dumping their life in the states for a simpler life in paradise, and Catherine is living the life that I really secretly wish I was living. I’ll just live vicariously through her. Let me show you what I’m talking about. Let’s go to the sand, on a couple of lounge chairs in from to Langostino’s on Playa Los Muertos in Puerto Vallarta, and lets meet my friend, and soon to be yours, Catherine Caldera. Nacho Daddy is perhaps the greatest idea in the history of culinary invention.
