The research we are reviewing in this course showcases how far we've come in the prevention, early detection, and treatment of cerebral palsy (CP) in children. Paul is joined again by Dr Naboth Namara to talk more about the challenges in Uganda which is less economically developed, doesn't have a fully-developed democracy, without a strong middle-class, and has experienced a civil war in recent years.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Fewer girls access education than boys, especially higher education, and many girls drop out of school because of traditions that continue to hinder their progress in school. It is believed that girls will make good wives even without an education, despite the fact that we know the value of education to women's lives. Most textbooks used in Ugandan school promote male hegemony by including gender insensitive language. Littering is a big problem here too. Rivers are clogged with plastic bottles. People just throw their rubbish on the ground, I pick up litter from the street outside my building all the time. People here need to be educated on the dangers of littering to the environment. I refuse to use plastic bags and bottles and talk to my neighbours about it all the time. The best way to communicate a message is as a role model and to surround yourself with similarly-minded people. If you create a group of ambassadors in a community who think like you they will role model certain behaviours and characteristics that will send a message to the communities. I've seen this work in Rwanda where men talk against violence and violence towards women and it creates impact. It's very difficult to change a mindset, you need to work hard at it and have passion for the message you wish to pass on. You have to develop a strategy as to which issues to deal with first and what message you need to use to reach people as well as the channels you wish to use to reach different audiences – radio, TV, local drama groups even.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Most girls miss school for days each month when they are menstruating because they do not have access to sanitary towels.' ‘Our schools churn out students and graduates who have limited skills for survival, in terms of work, social skills and teamwork skills. Even simple things like asking if you want something, or saying “thank you”. Few are employed.' ‘We must change people's mindsets. I know it's an uphill struggle, but it is the way forward. Between 2019 and 2020 gender-based violence cases jumped from 2,386 to 8,203, more than triple. Most of the victims were women and girls although some men and boys also suffered. Almost 19,000 people were victims of some form of domestic violence, 3,000 of which were male, 13,000 were female and 1,200 were male juveniles and the same number for female juveniles. These are only the cases reported to the police. There has been a staggering 650,000 unwanted teen pregnancies between 2020 and 2021, which were in large part result from the closure of schools during Covid. The major factor in the rise of violence has been the lockdown because many men and women who would usually go to urban centres to work were then often stuck in a single room with their large families. Six people renting a single room, conflicts are bound to arise. However, another factor is land. Most of these violent acts are the result of fights for land and space as towns continue to grow and urbanise. The education system is elitist. It costs a lot of money to send your children to a good school, so a lot end up in state-run schools that have no facilities, not even classrooms in some cases. That means we have a big problem where people are struggling to meet the needs of their families, and to send them to a good school, and they're paying less attention to their children in the process.    BEST MOMENTS ‘Gender-based violence takes on many forms: female genital mutilation – although a law has been enacted in Uganda to stop FGM. Though, in general, there seems to be a lack of political will to implement laws here.' ‘56% of women between 15 and 49 have experienced physical violence, the number for men over 15 is 50%. This is too much.' Traditionally men are the breadwinners, so during Covid, their ability to earn money was taken away and they felt less like men. In this episode, we interview Moses Namara of Black in AI about the new Black in AI Academic Program, a program that serves as a resource to support Black junior researchers as they apply to graduate programs, navigate graduate school, and enter the postgraduate job market. Moses Namara is a Facebook Research Fellow and Ph.D. candidate in Human-Centered Computing (HCC) at Clemson University. He uses interdisciplinary research methods from computer science, psychology, and the social sciences to understand the principles behind users'  adoption and use of technology, decision-making, and privacy attitudes and behaviors. His research interests are in the field of usable privacy and security and human-computer interaction. Nicole Mc Namara is wife of big wave legendary surfer Garrett Mc Namara, was one of the first women to tow in at Nazar, one of the biggest wave spots in the world. She's done a lot of research on Human Design and learning how different individuals energy type is released in the world & bettering yourself constantly as a person. Japan’s hospitality has the reputation of being second to none, but is this really true? Can Japanese service staff go that extra mile for consumers? What are some of the things that people find disturbing about Japanese hospitality? Listen now for a balanced deconstruction of Japan’s world renowned hospitality!Japanese airlines have amazing hospitality.Restaurant staff in Japan are very efficient and polite, but not particularly friendly.The hosts’ expectations of service are much higher because of what they are used to in Japan.Shop staff in Japan do not chat amongst themselves when customers are present.It’s difficult and uncommon to return goods to a store in Japan.Japanese service staff cannot deviate from protocol or think on their feet. Burke shares the arduous process of applying for tickets for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.The slogan for the Tokyo Olympics is “Omotenashi”, meaning great hospitality, but do the Japanese really connect with customers?Why do some people find Japanese hospitality disturbing? The customer is “God” in Japan whereas the customer is “King” in other countries.There are never heated confrontations between customer and staff in Japan. The staff always accepts responsibility.Japanese service staff take insults and abuse from complaining customers, even if the customer is in the wrong. Word of the day: “Namara”, a word from Hokkaido meaning “very”.People with tattoos are not allowed in onsens/hotsprings/public baths in Japan.Ben’s friend gets kicked out of an onsen because he had a tattoo.Onsens may become more lenient towards tattoos during the 2019 Rugby World Cup.The hosts talk about getting tattoos.Burke talks about his fraternity brothers getting branded (ouch!).With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics just around the corner, Japan’s hospitality has come into question. Fr Luke McNamara joins John and Shane on this weeks programme to introduce the series of talks and reflections coming up over December as well as to share on the preparations that the abbey community make to carve out the liturgical space for Advent.With the celebration of American Thanksgiving this week, the cross pollination of cultures has seen the concept of "Black Friday" cross the Atlantic with force this year and even though there is still five weeks to Christmas, the commercial exploitation of the religious holiday has started with some effort this year.As we try to remind ourselves why we celebrate in December, each year, on the programme we try to emphasis the need to give space to the season of Advent and to all time and space to properly prepare but often easier said than done for many people.However, this year the community at Glenstal are providing a time out in this busy time to explore over the Sundays of Advent the message of the prophets who awaited the coming of Messiah and how they still speak to us today.
