Dr Michelle Dickinson: nanotechnologist reveals whether donating blood can reduce your risk of cancer

The need for blood is constant, and every day lives are saved thanks to the generosity of blood donors. With a law change last year, even more people in New Zealand can now become blood donors. The removal of the ban on those who lived in the UK, France, or Ireland between 1980 and 1996 means thousands more Kiwis are now eligible to donate. This restriction was originally introduced due to concerns about Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), also known as Mad Cow Disease. New research published in the journal Blood suggests that in addition to helping save lives, being a regular blood donor might also reduce your risk of developing certain blood cancers. The study compared the blood of 200 healthy male blood donors in their 60s. One group had donated blood three times a year for 40 years, while the other had donated only around five times in total. While both groups showed a similar number of natural genetic mutations that accumulate with age, the type of mutation in stem cells differed: 50 percent of the frequent donors had a specific genetic variation. 30 percent of the irregular donors showed the same mutation. Interestingly, this genetic change is not linked to a higher risk of blood cancers like leukaemia. In fact, lab tests showed that blood stem cells from frequent donors were good at producing healthy red blood cells. As we age, stem cells in our bone marrow naturally accumulate mutations, resulting in groups of blood cells with slightly different genetic makeups. Sometimes, these mutations can increase the risk of blood cancers like leukaemia. One gene of particular interest in this study is called DNMT3A, which is known to be mutated in people who develop leukaemia. However, researchers found that the mutations in DNMT3A observed in frequent donors occurred in areas not associated with a pre-leukemic risk. When you donate blood, your body responds by producing new blood cells to replace what was lost. This process places mild stress on the body, which appears to promote the renewal of healthy blood stem cells and select for mutations that favour growth rather than disease. These findings add another potential benefit to regular blood donation. While the research does not prove that donating blood directly reduces the risk of blood cancer, it suggests that the process of blood renewal may positively influence the genetic makeup of stem cells. With the recent eligibility changes in New Zealand, there has never been a better time to become a donor. By giving blood, you not only help those in need but may also support your own long-term health. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: My Experience Donating Blood Stem Cells, or: Why You Should Join a Bone Marrow Registry, published by Silas Strawn on January 3, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Note: I'm not a doctor. Please don't make decisions about your health based on an EA forum post before at least talking with a physician or other licensed healthcare practitioner. TLDR: I donated blood stem cells in early 2021. Immediately prior, I had been identified as the best match for someone in need of a bone marrow transplant, likely with leukemia, lymphoma, or similar condition. Although the first attempt to collect my blood stem cells failed, my experience was overwhelmingly positive as well as fulfilling on a personal level. The foundation running the donation took pains to make it as convenient as possible - and free, other than my time. I recovered quickly and have had no long-term issues related to the donation[1]. I would encourage everyone to at least do the cheek swab to join the registry if they are able. this page to join the Be The Match registry. This post was prompted - very belatedly - by a comment from "demost_" on Scott Alexander's post about his experience donating a kidney[2]. The commenter was speculating about the differences between bone marrow donation and kidney donation[3]. I'm typically a lurker, but I figured this is a case where I actually do have something to say[4]. According to demost_, fewer than 1% of those on the bone marrow registry get matched, so my experience is relatively rare. I checked and couldn't find any other forum posts about being a blood stem cell or bone marrow donor. I hope to shine a light on what the experience is like as a donor. I know EAs are supposed to be motivated by cold, hard facts and rationality and so this post may stick out since it's recounting a personal experience[5]. Nevertheless, given how close-to-home matters of health are, I figured this could be useful for those considering joining the registry or donating. My Donation Experience I joined the registry toward the end of my college years. I don't recall the exact details, but I've pieced together the timeline from my email archives. Be The Match got my cheek swab sample in December 2019 and I officially joined the registry in January 2020. If you're a university student (at least in America[6]), there's a good chance that at some point there will be a table in your commons or quad where volunteers will be offering cheek swabs to join the bone marrow donor registry. The whole process takes a few minutes and I'd encourage everyone to at least join the registry if they can. Mid-December 2020, I was matched and started the donation process. For the sake of privacy, they don't tell you anything about the recipient at that point beyond the vaguest possible demographic info. I think they told me the gender and an age range, but nothing besides. demost_ supposed that would-be donors should be more moved to donate bone marrow than kidneys since there's a particular, identifiable person in need (and marrow is much more difficult to match, so you're less replaceable as a donor). I can personally attest to this. Even though I didn't know much about the recipient at all, I felt an extreme moral obligation to see the process through. I knew that my choice to donate could make a massive difference to this person. I imagined how I would feel if it were a friend or loved one in need or even myself. The minor inconveniences of donating felt doubly minor next to the weight of someone's life. As a college student, I had a fluid schedule. I was also fortunate that my distributed systems professor was happy to let me defer an exam scheduled for the donation date. To their credit, Be The Match offered not only to compensate any costs associated with the donation, but also to replace any wages missed...

The FDA banned donations entirely during the HIV epidemic in the early 1980s when little was known about AIDS. But the risk of transfusion-related transmission hasn't been a real concern for decades. Kansas City University professor Dr. Benjamin Grin says the government's holdout on changing guidelines is in part because of a lingering stigma.

Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:    Simon: Hello and thank you Dr Cabral. As someone who is 'obsessed' with optimizing my health and performance, I've always wondered how I should view donating blood and plasma. Putting aside the great benefit to others, could you explain what the immediate and medium-term impacts on the body of donating blood, in terms of overall health, mental and physical performance? Thanks!   Laura: What could be the reason of a 30 year old woman on phase 3 of adrenal dysfunction (adrenal fatigue) with normal levels of estrogen but high progesterone on a saliva test? Pg/E2 ratio, testosterone and DHEA all good. Never seen high progesterone before so not sure what we should be looking at here.   Hayley: Hi Dr. Cabral! I have been having issues on and off for a few months with my oral health. I have tiny bumps on the end of my tongue that makes it constantly feel raw. My saliva always feels thick and it seems like food gets stuck before it even starts to go down my throat. My throat feels sore most days, like there is a lump when I try and swallow. My gums occasionally bleed when I floss as well. This all started a few months ago with not much different to my routine and I'm not sure where all this is coming in from. I feel like it has really affected my ability to eat and am looking for an idea of what this could be caused by. Thanks!   Lisa: Hi Dr Cabral! I have a hard time with alcohol. With 1 glass of wine I feel quite buzzed and I'm curious as to why? Is it a histamine intolerance or am I missing and enzyme? Liver clogged? Can I test for this and is there anything I can do or take to handle alcohol a bit better? I simply would like to be able to enjoy 2 glasses when I eat out without feeling too tipsy. Appreciate all your knowledge you share on these wonderful podcasts!   Kelsey: I have a client that burps when she is hungry. She doesn't burp after eating or have acid reflux. Would burping when hungry signal anything? Thanks!   Tiffany: I am 46 years old and my anxiety is getting worse and affecting my daily life. I feel weak all the time and get surges of adrenaline at strange times. I get anxiety really badly when driving. I need an appointment with a functional medicine practitioner. I live in FL but would be willing to do telemedicine. I don't know who to reach out to, but I am starting to get desperate. How can I schedule an appointment?
