Totally 80s and 90s Recall

This week, we're firing up the intensity with Heat, Michael Mann's epic 1995 crime saga that brought together two cinematic titans — Al Pacino and Robert De Niro — for the first time ever in a shared scene. (Yes, The Godfather Part II doesn't count — different timelines, folks.) Heat is a gritty, stylish, and emotionally charged cat-and-mouse thriller set against the moody backdrop of Los Angeles. Pacino plays Lt. Vincent Hanna, a relentless LAPD detective with a chaotic personal life and a flair for dramatic yelling. De Niro is Neil McCauley, a cool, calculating career thief who lives by a strict code: never get attached to anything you can't walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner. After a high-stakes armored car heist goes sideways, Hanna starts closing in on McCauley and his crew, which includes a young, twitchy Val Kilmer and Tom Sizemore in full 90s tough-guy mode. The film builds toward one of the most iconic diner scenes in film history — a quiet, tense face-off between Pacino and De Niro — and ends with a pulse-pounding airport showdown you won't forget. With a killer supporting cast (Ashley Judd, Natalie Portman, Jon Voight, and even a blink-and-you'll-miss-him Henry Rollins), a haunting score, and shootouts that still influence action films today, Heat isn't just a movie — it's an experience. Stylish, sprawling, and full of moral gray areas, it's Michael Mann at the top of his game. So buckle up, because this week on Totally 80s and 90s Recall, we're diving deep into the heat, the heists, and that glorious late-90s energy. Not the actual real-life Chicago criminal Neil McCauley, but the story of José Vigoa. Vigoa was many things: a Cuban, a commando. a Marielito, a drug kingpin, a family man, and a heist man. Ah, to be an outlaw in the wild west. Got nothing but a crew to back you up. Like really nothing. As one my favorite criminals Neil McCauley once said, "Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner." They were living this life. These guys slept outside and had like one outfit. No wonder they were desperate for some cash. Crazy that capitalism was what got them all in the end. I'm pretty sure that's the main point of both of these films, "The Assassinations of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" (written and directed by Andrew Dominik) as well as James' Mangolds remake of the 1957 classic, "3:10 to Yuma". And Heat too (not Heat 2) for that matter.   Joining the conversation this week are Daniel King (@dkingbooksla), author of "An Eye for Killing" and "Table Scraps" as well as Quinn Shields (@quinnshields) of The Fools Journey Podcast (@thefoolsjourneypod).   (0:00) Intro (7:15) The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (1:00:38) 3:10 to Yuma

Elaine and Mark from The Honeymoon Period podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Elaine's choice Heat. Heat (1995) is a heist drama written and directed by Michael Mann. Its ensemble cast features Al Pacino as Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, LAPD, Robert De Niro as Neil McCauley, Val Kilmer as Chris Shiherlis, Jon Voight as Nate, Tom Sizemore as Michael Cheritto, Diane Venora as Justine Hanna, Amy Brenneman as Eady, Ashley Judd as Charlene Shiherlis, Mykelti Williamson as Sergeant Bobby Drucker, Wes Studi as Lieutenant Sammy Casals, Ted Levine as Detective Mike Bosko, William Fichtner as Roger Van Zant, Natalie Portman as Lauren Gustafson, Tom Noonan as Kelso AND Hank Azaria as Alan Marciano. Neil McCauley leads a gang of elite criminals, but when a robbery of bearer bonds goes sour when one of the crew kills a guard he ends up in the path of Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, a hardened and obsessive detective. McCauley discovers Hanna on his tail but doesn't spook and agrees to one last heist. Heat is widely considered a masterpiece, the now iconic coffee scene marked the first time Pacino and De Niro shared the screen together and it is one of Christopher Nolan's favourite films. Recommendability scores reflected some of the criticisms (particularly around the role of women) but were still high. Lower scores for small screen reflected that it is one of those films best watched the big screen and gives an overall rating of 3.75.   [supsystic-tables id=328] Episode #315 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #315 Crew of Mark (@mark_greg) and Elaine (@elainegwrites) from The Honeymoon Period podcast Find their Websites online at https://t.co/CiX1Wv5dyH and at https://twitter.com/guardian and at https://twitter.com/bbcnewcastle Please make sure you give them some love   More about Heat For more info on Heat, you can visit Heat IMDb page here or Heat Rotten Tomatoes page here. For the second week of our Comfort Crime month, John and Georgia deep dive into the Los Angeles underworld with Michael Mann's 1995 epic cops and robbers movie, Heat. This movie brings you so far into the symbiotic relationship between law enforcement and crooks that it's difficult to know what side you're on. We discuss the real life story of Chicago detective Chuck Adamson, whose coffee break with career criminal Neil McCauley inspired Mann's film, the iconic first-ever onscreen scene between acting heavyweights Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro, the many parallelisms between Hanna and McCauley, Michael Mann's collaboration with celebrated cinematographer Dante Spinotti (which began with Manhunter in 1986), the incredibly well-researched screenplay, the loneliness of existing outside regular society, and the rigorous training the actors went through to perform their roles. This holiday season you can take a break from the screens and still get immersed in a movie we've all been waiting for...On this episode we are talking with New York Times Bestselling Author who got the pleasure of pairing up with a cinematic master for a sequel that has been decades in the making and that we never would have expected.  It's time for Heat 2.One day after the end of Heat, Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer) is holed up in Koreatown, wounded, half delirious, and desperately trying to escape LA. Hunting him is LAPD detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino). Hours earlier, Hanna killed Shiherlis's brother in arms Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) in a gunfight under the strobe lights at the foot of an LAX runway. Now Hanna's determined to capture or kill Shiherlis, the last survivor of McCauley's crew, before he ghosts out of the city.In 1988, seven years earlier, McCauley, Shiherlis, and their highline crew are taking scores on the West Coast, the US-Mexican border, and now in Chicago. Driven, daring, they're pulling in money and living vivid lives. And Chicago homicide detective Vincent Hanna—a man unreconciled with his history—is following his calling, the pursuit of armed and dangerous men into the dark and wild places, hunting an ultraviolent gang of home invaders.Meanwhile, the fallout from McCauley's scores and Hanna's pursuit cause unexpected repercussions in a parallel narrative, driving through the years following Heat.A truly immersive experience and a must for any fans of the original film and this universe, you won't be able to put it down.We had the pleasure of sitting down with Meg to talk about who approached who on this project, what her job was working along side  Michael Mann and how important it was at the end of the day to make this a novel and not a screenplay.Heat 2 projects its dimensional and richly drawn men and women into whole new worlds—from the inner sanctums of rival crime syndicates in a South American free-trade zone to transnational criminal enterprises in Southeast Asia. The novel brings you intimately into these lives. In Michael Mann's Heat universe, they will confront new adversaries in lethal circumstances beyond all boundaries.

ONE HEAT MINUTE is the podcast examining Michael Mann's 1995 crime opus HEAT minute by minute. It's the 73rd minute (1:12:00-1:13:00) - host Blake Howard joins one of the Top 3 HEAT obsessives in the known universe, the immensely talented director of MAYHEM, EVERLY and the upcoming Frank Grillo and Anthony Mackie action thriller POINT BLANK for Netflix, friend of the show, Joe Lynch. Blake brings Joe for the first face to infrared face (or "infrablue" in the Michael Mann universe) between Vincent Hannah and Neil McCauley. Correction: "Captain Hydration" is not Chuck "Charlie" Adamson as my research to that point led me to believe. Adamson was a technical advisor on HEAT and plays Ancell in THIEF. Steven Ford, the son of former President of the Gerald Ford, plays "Officer Bruce" a.k.a Captain Hydration. He is though a Chuck Adamson look-a-like.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/donations
