The Hard Seltzer craze starts us off today, as we check in with Ft. Myers Brewing and their Spkyd line of seltzers. They recently took home Best Seltzer from 2020 Seltzerland, so we'll chat with Co-founder Rob Whyte about the win, creating the seltzers, where you can find them, and his favorite flavor. After that, we're going into the vault again, this time to Ocoee and Toll Road Brewing. Duane Morin is one of three co-founders in this small but mighty West Orange outpost of Florida Craft Beer, and we spoke to him in Feb. 2020 about the location, styles, and fitting the absolute most equipment into that little car garage. After that, we're going into the vault, back to St. Augustine in Jan. of 2020. We spoke to Doug and Courtney Murr, owners of the recently reopened Dog Rose Brewing in St. Augustine's Lincolnville neighborhood. In our series of current Florida legislative candidates, we'll be talking to Rep. Nick DiCeglie from Brooksville, who worked hand-in-hand with Brooksville's Marker 48 Brewing during the recent closures. We chatted with him about their work and how he feels the 2021 legislative session may go for Florida craft beer. From there, we'll talk with Tank co-founder Carlos Padron about working with The de Moya Foundation. This non-profit organization places people with special abilities with companies that have open positions they need filled, such as local breweries. And, one of those breweries that has worked with them has been The Tank Brewing in Doral; so, we'll learn about how the experience has left a positive effect on the whole crew. Listen in... Welcome back to the Florida Beer Podcast! Today is a big episode, but don't forget to go onto FloridaBeerBlog.com or our social media pages and download your #SupportFLCraftBeer image to post on Sept. 16th! We start with Big Storm Brewing, the massive multi-site brewery along Florida's Gulf Coast. They just purchased Big Blue Brewing in Cape Coral, so we'll talk to owner LG Govoni about plans for the space, making hand sanitizer, their recent Belgian-style beer releases, and more. Much, much more. Then we head to Miami, where Concrete Beach Brewery is closing their doors after 5 years. Sort of, they are being remade into the new Dogfish Head Miami. We went to Concrete Beach last November, before the quarantine, to chat with their Marketing Manager Erika Chavez about everything that was going on. I sat on the audio since I didn't want to send people to a closed brewery, and now... Florida State primaries are now over, and we now know the big matchups that will be decided in November. One of the most contencious districts is house District 15, comprising Downtown Jacksonville and currently represented by Wyman Duggan. Since he is up for reelection, we spoke to Rep. Duggan about the effect of current laws on breweries and craft beer bars, his views on how the Florida legislature can support craft beer, and all of the great breweries he represents. Two of his constituents were also on the call, Susan and Kevin Miller, the mother and son team behind Bold CIty Brewing. We'll chat about how COVID-19 has affected them and their two Jacksonville locations, trends they are seeing in Jacksonville craft beer, and about everyone's recent conversation with Division of Business and Professional Regulation Secretary Halsey Beshears. Here on the Florida Beer Podcast, we are going to be getting a bit political. Elections are coming up, and you, as a voter, have the chance to send to Tallahassee Representatives and Senators that speak about your ideas and support the craft beer industry in Florida. For our first interview, we are speaking to current Florida State Representative Heather Fitzenhagen, currently running for Florida Senate in her home city of Ft. Myers. We'll chat with her about the effect of current laws on breweries and craft beer bars, her views on how the Florida legislature can support craft beer, and her recent conversation with Secretary Halsey Beshears. From there, we head to Fat Tap Beer Bar and Eatery in Oakland Park, a bar and restaurant with one of the most amazing tap lists I have ever seen. We'll chat with owner Robert Robayna to learn more about the history of Fat Tap, the troubles of getting good kegs after the major shutdowns, and those amazing field trips they've been taking recently. Welcome to COVID-19 Episode 12 of the Florida Beer Podcast, powered by Floridabeerblog.com. We are going around the state to speak to brewers and others in the industry to see how the quarantine has affected them and what they are doing to survive in this temporary new normal. Not only are we dealing with the current quarantine, but there is also a tremendous wave of social change and activism spurred on by recent tragic events. But are businesses reacting to those events out of interest in the movement, or out of a sense of requirement? Khris Johnson, co-owner and head brewer of Green Bench Brewing in St. Pete posed that very question recently, and was kind enough to join us on the show to discuss this, reaching out to St. Pete's overlooked communities, weathering the quarantine storm, and slowly reopening. Our communities are going through a VERY difficult time right now. So, I'm going to talk to you a bit about being black, and it's going to be uncomfortable. So, yes, this is going to be uncomfortable. And, that is the point. It can no longer be uncomfortable for only US. We need EVERYONE to have this conversation. In this first discussion of what may need to be many, I'll share some of my own experiences, discuss "The Talk," and touch on the police brutality that has spurred the Black Lives Matter movement. And, then, I'll leave you with some homework and advice on how--in particular white people--can help the cause. Listen in... It is no secret that my family and I are big fans of St. Augustine, and watching their rebirth as a neat little craft beer hub in Florida has been amazing. Leading that charge is the largest brewery in our nation's oldest city, Ancient City Brewing. We sat with co-owner Greg Tuttle to understand the fate of their distribution networks, two taprooms, and how this tourism-dependent community is faring. I'm continuing my coverage of COVID-19 on the Florida Beer Podcast, powered by Floridabeerblog.com. I'll continue going around the state (virtually) and speaking to brewers and others in the industry about how the quarantine has affected them and what they are doing to survive in this temporary new normal. She is a 22-year-old college student who figured out a way for her family farm business to thrive during the coronavirus shutdown. Palm Beach County's East Coast Farms & Vegetables had to do something fast. Within a week of the pandemic hitting south Florida, the Lantana distributor's sales went to zero. East Coast Farms and Vegetables partners with farmers to sell fruits and vegetables to companies like Sysco and Cheney Brothers, which supply the restaurants and stores all over Florida. That's when the owners' 22-year-old daughter Katelyn Garcia had an idea. And the company went into action--offering up boxes of fresh fruits and veggies for just $10 to anyone who can come pick it up. Hear how Katelyn's idea is now turning East Coast Farms and Vegetables into a household name in Palm Beach County! Former two-time boxing heavyweight champion of the world, Shannon Briggs, joins the show today. He's had 60 wins, 6 draws, and just 1 loss over his career with 53 KOs. After moving to Florida about 20 years ago, Mr. Briggs lives near Miami in Pembroke Pines and will be debuting (as soon as all of this is over) in his first bare-knuckle fight. We chat about why he is shifting toward tackling a new division of fighting and how he's adjusting his training in the age of coronavirus--especially in light of his particular health concern. Then, we'll get into how he's used the ring to overcome the many difficulties in his past and how he's looking toward the future and training others. Plus, he shares the story of getting roped into filming Bad Boys II with Will Smith in the mean streets of Miami. Things with Coronavirus are moving so fast. But, this show's platform will keep us all connected, sharing people's experiences as in-the-moment as possible. Listen in... I'll introduce you to my friend, Andrew Carey, who will share his firsthand account of struggling through and then surviving coronavirus. After spending a few days in the hospital, Andrew took to Facebook Live to tell his story and then graciously agreed to share it here as well. He discusses his varying stages of symptoms, barely making it to the hospital, and his road to recovery. Think the first sign and symptom of COVID-19 is a fever? Well, Andrew's story will cause you to rethink that. AND his experience will answer as many questions as it opens up. Then, if you're getting into video games while in quarantine, he shares his PS4 ID at the end, so you can hang out with him virtually after listening! Listen in... Welcome to another episode of the Florida Beer Podcast, as we prepare for another festival! This time it's the renown FemAle Brew Fest on March 21st. This one is notable as it only allows breweries with female ownership or female staff on the brewing team. Much to my delight, this festival has been growing in size for the past few years, and is now going to be held at the brand new Dania Point. We spoke to festival organizer Frances Antonio-Martineau about the history of the event and what to expect. We then spend most of our time in the delightful Vero Beach at the mettled and storied Walking Tree Brewery. I've written about them before, and it's funny to see how things have grown there. Literally, as the mangrove tree I saw on my initial visit is much, much larger now. I sat down with Co-founder and head brewer Mike Malone and his wife, Creative Director Brooke Malone to talk about the history of Walking Tree so far, craft beer in Vero Beach, and an awesome collaboration they just did with their local newspaper. Remember, leave us a nice 5-star review if you're on Apple Podcasts. If you're not, you can still like us, subscribe, and tell your friends! Listen in... Many people join school clubs to put it on their resume. That's great and all, but there is much more to student clubs than just being able to say that you were an active member of the "Young Investors Club" on your resume. There's networking... I go over how school clubs are the easiest way to "infiltrate" and practice your networking skills with people who are your age and who you're probably more comfortable talking to compared to a senior executive at a company.
She was born in Jamaica and moved to Palm Beach County with her single mom when she was 9. She was painfully shy and had a hard time learning. She found track and field in high school and immediately loved the sport and her coach. Antoinette Wilks qualified for the Olympic trials twice, but a devastating injury after college ended her Olympic hopes. She says it's the best thing that ever happened to her, because it put her on a path to finding her true passion. In this episode of People of Palm Beach, Wilks talks about her new career as a track and field coach at Keiser College, her charity and the learning disability that still brings her to tears. Listen to why Antoinette Wilks is one of the most driven People of Palm Beach... Episode 37 is a big one, and we are all over the place today. We start in Tampa, West Tampa to be specific, at the relatively new Bay Cannon Brewing. It's the first brewery in a section of the city still relatively untouched by craft beer, and I discussed that pionnering with Adrienne Juaire, Marketing Manager and Joanna Reilly-Brown, Event Manager (on top of their day jobs, being moms, and kinda being incredible at everything they do). We discussed everything from creating the brand, to finding the location, to the beers on tap. From there, we head across the state and the I-4 corridor to downtown Melbourne and Hell 'n Blazes Brewing. They set up shop years ago in a wonderful old 120+ year building and have a fnatiastic lineup of foods and taps. Setting up shop in their bank vault bonus room (and listening to plenty of footsteps from overhead), we spoke to brewmaster Todd Furbeck and head chef Drew Campbell about the history of their location, craft beer on the Space Coast, and food pairing events. There are a lot of great episodes coming up, so subscribe to us today! Twelve years ago, new mom Leslie Nifoussi was alone in the New Jersey Shore surf shop she owned with her husband when, out of nowhere, a customer went on a violent rampage - attacking her with a rock and throwing her into a glass display case. She fought back and survived, but that moment changed how she looked at herself. Nifoussi and her family now live in Jupiter, Florida where she has a thriving career as a commercial model and spokesperson. Even though it's been more than a decade since that attack, she has just gotten comfortable enough to talk about that traumatic event, the crippling anxiety that followed and the pivotal moment that changed how she viewed that day and herself. I'll introduce you to a mother from Tampa, Tonia Root, who faced tragedy head-on and is now sharing the story of what happened to her little boy, Gage, in her new book. Then, my guest storyteller today is Rudy Jean-Bart, an American History and African-American History Professor at Broward College's South Campus. He's going to tell us all about one of Florida's lesser-known historical figures, James Jerome Johnson, a brown-skinned bootlegger who figured out how to work the systems to create his fortunes. And, if you listen all the way to the end, you'll get to hear how I relate to one of these Florida figures. Listen in... This is going to be quite the busy episode of the Florida Beer Podcast, so hang in there... We start in Boca Raton, close to where the 2nd Annual Best of the Belgians Beer Fest is going to be held on Sat., Feb. 8th. This event celebrates Belgian and Belgian-style beers with a rather impressive list of breweries, domestic and direct from Belgium as well. It is put on by Boca Ballet Theatre and Barrel of Monks, and proceeds go to support the Ballet Theatre. To get some more info, we chat with Barrel of Monks co-owner and brewmaster Bill McFee to learn more about the festival, the beneficiary, and whether Westvleteren will appear. From there, we go across the state to Safety Harbor, to an interview I've been wanting to do for some time. It's the home of Crooked Thumb Brewing, rapidly growing and making big bounds in the Pinellas Co. and Tampa Bay beer scene. We chat with Travis Kruger, co-founder of Crooked Thumb, to learn a bit more about their expanding footprint, that name, and the kitties that run around the tap room. Listen in... Thanks to a promise to his dying mom, Reggie vowed to shine a light on the issue of racism by walking thousands of miles across the country. His Walk for Unity has been met with both support and criticism along the way. In fact, one awful experience has changed how Reggie Dee now reacts to racism.
