#225 CEO Lattice, Sarah Franklin: Trailblazer

Guest: Sarah Franklin, CEO of LatticeAs the CEO of a growing company, Lattice's Sarah Franklin has learned that one of her most important contributions is taking a leap of faith. “You have to have the courage to be the first one to do it,” she says,” and to show that it can be done, and to pave the way so that then your team feels trust.”Sarah cautions, though, that sometimes courage is deciding to stop and go a different direction. As agentic AI becomes more common, the people building companies like Lattice should look to the “cautionary tales” of how social media and mobile phones have changed society, she says.“We can have the courage to say, what are the outcomes that we want to prevent? Or what are the outcomes that we want to make sure happen? This all takes, courage, because it's all unknown.”Chapters:(01:14) - Schooling in Mexico (04:09) - Raising brave children (10:28) - Sarah's upbringing (13:29) - The pursuit of money (16:23) - Measuring success (19:28) - Learnings, not regrets (22:55) - Make an impact (26:44) - Pitching Trailhead (32:56) - Elevating a B2B company (35:27) - How to colonize Mars (38:39) - Marketing, the Salesforce way (44:21) - Dolphining and truth-tellers (50:56) - Renewed purpose (56:30) - The challenges of being CEO (01:00:18) - Pave the way (01:03:25) - “Humanizing AI” (01:06:57) - Handling controversy (01:11:04) - Who Lattice is hiring and what “grit” means to Sarah Mentioned in this episode: FaceTime, Salesforce, Marc Benioff, Mahatma Gandhi, Instagram, the Fortune 500, Java, Jerry Maguire, National Parks, Nike, Michael Jordan, Apple and “Think Different,” Sara Varni, Scott Holden, Andy Kofoid, Databricks, Datadog, Behind the Cloud, Oracle, Microsoft, Elon Musk, Amazon AWS, George Hu, Mike Rosenbaum, Cheryl Feldman, Zac Otero, Guidewire Software, AI agents, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and LinkedIn.Links:Connect with SarahLinkedInConnect with JoubinTwitterLinkedInEmail: grit@kleinerperkins.com Learn more about Kleiner PerkinsThis episode was edited by Eric Johnson from LightningPod.fm

Even if you aren't battling a chronic illness, you only get so many spoons per day, and maybe the key to a fulfilling life in music is to look for the intersection of what you are great at, what people will pay you for, AND what you can sustainably do in a day, a week, a month. It's worth being conscious of your energy, not just because you can break yourself with overwork - I'm looking at you, 29 year old Jennet - but also because you can do your BEST work when you are taking the BEST care of yourself.  Quality over quantity, because YOUR ARTISTRY MATTERS.  I know you will love this interview with Christine Smith of Musicians vs the World and Frosted Lens Entertainment! ThoughtSpot CMO Scott Holden spent eight years at Salesforce, putting in the time every year behind the scenes at Dreamforce watching the company reach 20,000 employees. And he probably could have thrown his hat into the ring to be CMO there — but he didn't want that. Instead, he says, “I had the hunger to go back and build something” with a strong mission and vision, so he left for a much, much smaller company: The business intelligence company ThoughtSpot, where he has worked since 2015. In this episode, Scott and Joubin discuss the rise of “vulnerability is strength”; the dangers of living someone else's truth and not listening to your instincts; the pressure of being at the top of a mountain; why he decided to move from Salesforce to ThoughtSpot; why enterprise marketing is about more than the story; and why competing companies haven't been able to poach him away.In this episode, we cover: Scott's lifelong reputation of being graceful under pressure (04:45) Opportunity cost and trusting your gut (10:29) Which is harder to excel at: Downhill skiing or golf? Scott Holden is the founder and CEO of Lab Effects & CBD Global, two vertically integrated hemp companies that span cultivation, extraction, formulation, and global distribution operations. In this episode, Scott talks about his return to the biological sciences to focus on hemp CBD product development to find a high potency and non-intoxicating solution for his father's chronic illness. His unique medical training background, complex software development, and personal experience developing cannabinoid and terpene formulations make his take on the future of individualised medicine profound. Holden has degrees in biochemistry and molecular biology and once worked as an emergency medical technician. After deciding not to pursue studies to become a physician, he wound up working in software sales and marketing for IBM. In 2014 Scott created Cannabis Transparency Standards™ (CTS), the hemp industry's first chain of the custody compliance program. CTS provides material pedigree compliance and transparency beyond current pharmaceutical standards and is now in the process of being block chained with a crypto token payment option to free businesses from banking and merchant underwriting control. Prior to the hemp industry, Scott worked in software consulting for companies like Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, and Boeing. Scott unexpectedly resigned as CEO to find an alternative treatment to chemotherapy for his father's chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML). The diagnosis came with an 18-month prognosis but has since become a successful battle of 9 years and counting. Lab Effects & CBD Global were born not from opportunity but necessity. Now focused full time in hemp, Scott applies his formal education in molecular biology and biochemistry to conduct research and develop natural plant-based drug delivery systems that offer patients healthier and more convenient alternatives to traditional pharmaceutical drugs. Through the use of terpenes, Holden says he's helped people experiencing a wide range of health conditions -- including his father, who'd been diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. Lab Effects sells Therapeutic Terpene Blends with formulation names such as Oncology, Relax/Sleep, Pain/Inflammation, and Focus/Active/ADHD.Useful Linkshttps://labeffects.comhttps://cbdglobalextracts.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/holdenhawaii/To learn more about plants & your health from Colleen at LabAroma check out this informative PDF https://mailchi.mp/2fe0e426b244/osw1lg2dkhDisclaimer: The information presented in this podcast is for educational purposes only and is not intended to replace professional medical advice. As Scott noted, feeling genuinely passionate about the story you're telling helps others get invested in the vision, too. During his seven-year stint at Salesforce, one of the key lessons he learned was that a great story has the power to inspire the market and the entire internal organization.Dashboards are dead. When it comes to analytics, Scott takes the bold stance that static dashboards have become a relic of the past. Instead, he believes that analytics should be an interactive experience which business leaders can immerse themselves in on the fly, in real time.Think big. When it comes to marketing and PR, there's always room to think bigger and expand your vision for the company. Scott believes through sheer force of will and great storytelling, you can achieve anything you set your mind to and motivate others to do the same.Learn more about ThoughtSpot here: https://www.thoughtspot.com/Learn more about Scott here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottiholden/

Set an expectation that everyone can use analytics tools to make decisions.Making great decisions means taking risks. And that means you need to be comfortable defending the decision, no matter what the outcome.Quotes"Everything that I look at in my world comes through an analytical lens, and the power of that is that you can merge lots of different data sets together and get a more cohesive view.""You can start out small and have a little win and then keep going.""The power of the modern data stack is I don't have a data analyst on my team.  We all are able to bring up data sources like a data engineer."Thanks to our friendsTruth Be Known is brought to you by Talend, a leader in data integration and data integrity, enabling every company to find clarity amidst the chaos. Marketers perform all sorts of important functions, from brand campaigns to assisting PR. But if a marketer isn’t filling the pipeline, nothing else matters, according to Scott Holden, CMO of ThoughtSpot. On this episode of Demand Gen Visionaries, he tell us that the most important duties of a demand gen marketer are to know their numbers, answer for them, and be able to explain why they are where they are. Because if you can measure, then you can manage and grow.Key Takeaways:Any good demand gen strategy will include a segmentation plan. It’s impossible to have a good demand gen strategy that focuses on all potential accounts equally.LinkedIn is quickly becoming an uncuttable channel for many demand gen teams because of the way that it allows them to target specific accounts. While the cancellation of in-person events has been a blow for many B2B marketers, it can be an advantage for those who realize that senior-level execs are easier to get access to than ever.Quotes:“The number one job for a marketing leader is pipeline creation. If I'm not hitting my pipeline target for the sales team, nothing else matters.”“We've got hundreds of campaigns running at any given point of time. Marketing these days is an all-out, guns blazing affair.”“Segmentation strategy is critical, but it just doesn’t fly at all if you don’t have sales bought in. If they’re not ready to segment accounts and narrow the focus to a reasonable level, then it won’t work.”“It’s the golden age of data. In particular, being able to pull data from nontraditional sources together and analyze quickly across them is crucial.”SponsorDemand Gen Visionaries is brought to you by Qualified.com, the #1 Conversational Marketing platform for companies that use Salesforce and the secret weapon for Demand Gen pros. Data and analytics play essential roles when it comes to marketing. But effectively using data to improve marketing is easier said than done. According to Scott Holden, CMO of ThoughtSpot, technology needs to be a part of the solution. On this episode, Scott sits down with Ian to dig a bit deeper into data-driven marketing and the tools marketers need in order to better access insights. They also discuss Scott's journey to ThoughtSpot, what it means to be on the same page with other departments, and much more. However, when it comes to marketing against your competition, it could be mean you hit the mark. - Scott states, "If you're keeping the sales team fed, it buys you the right to do the cool stuff [as marketers]." Marketing and sales should be on the same page and a win for one team should be a win for the other. - Scott also argues, "In the absence of a framework or in the absence of information or communication, people just assume you're not doing your job." It's your job as the CMO to set these frameworks so others know how to measure your abilities. - Don't be afraid to stick to your value proposition and your core messaging. A lot of marketers are trying to ride trends and go all over the place. Stay constant. Bio: Scott is the Chief Marketing Officer of ThoughtSpot, a company focused on disrupting the business intelligence industry with search-driven analytics. Scott's career journey began at Chase, where he was a financial analyst. Soon after, Scott went to JP Morgan and then to Google, before landing at Salesforce.
