Bible Reading: Luke 12:6-7In the attic's dim light, Andrew could see many interesting things--boxes of Christmas ornaments, piles of photo albums, and trunks filled with camping equipment. He and Dad were hunting for Dad's old train set from when he was Andrew's age. "What's this?" asked Andrew, stumbling across a large wooden crate with dozens of items wrapped in newspaper. Wondering what was inside, he began to unravel one. He was disappointed to discover an old-fashioned teacup painted with rambling roses."Be careful with that!" said Dad. "That looks like Grandma Joan's teacup collection. It's very precious to your mom."Andrew was puzzled. "What's so precious about a box full of teacups?" he asked. "Didn't Mom tell you the story? Grandma Joan collected teacups from every place she ever visited. She had teacups from all over the world!"Andrew's eyes grew wide. Perhaps the teacups weren't so boring after all."They're not everybody's 'cup of tea,'" continued Dad, obviously pleased with his awful joke, "but this collection was Grandma Joan's treasured possession!" "What do you mean?" asked Andrew. "Like, her very favorite thing?" "Exactly!" said Dad. "Over the years, those teacups became very valuable. She could have sold them at a high price, but she wouldn't think of it. They held a lot of memories."Andrew smiled--now he understood. The teacups reminded her of all the places she'd visited. "Do you know there's a verse in the Bible about God's treasured possession?" asked Dad.Andrew was intrigued. "God has a treasured possession? What is it?""Well," said Dad, "it's you and me, and all of God's people all over the earth. We're so valuable to Him that He was willing to pay a high price so we could be His. He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for our sins so that we could have a relationship with Him." Dad blew away years of dust from a large rectangular box. "And speaking of favorite things--this was definitely mine when I was your age!" He opened the box. "Here she is! The Red Rocket!"Andrew hurried over to have a look at the red locomotive. "Wow, it's so awesome! Can we set it up today, Dad? Please?""Okay," said Dad. "Let's go!"–Angela JelfHow About You?Do you have a treasured possession? Is it valuable? You can tell how valuable something is by the price someone is willing to pay for it. God's people are His treasured possession. He paid the highest price--the life of His Son, Jesus--to make you one of His children. That's how much He loves you. You are very valuable to Him!Today's Key Verse:The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. Bible Reading: John 14:15-27; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18Kenna wrapped her arms around Milo, her orange tabby cat. A single tear slipped onto her kitty's furry face. Kenna felt more tears inside her, but she was tired from crying every day for the past week, and she didn't know if any more tears would come. "God, I miss my Mom. Why did you take her to heaven?" Kenna's whispered words hung in the air.Mom had been sick for a couple of weeks, and everyone had been praying. Even when she went to the hospital, Kenna had been a little scared, but she really thought her mom would come home. "I feel so alone." Kenna rubbed her cheek against Milo's soft fur. She thought about her mom's smile--so bright, always full of joy, even when she had to go through her many surgeries over the years. Kenna remembered her mom reading the Bible to her just a few months back. "Kenna-girl, do you know how much God loves you?" Mom had cupped Kenna's face in her hands. "I want you to remember that He is always with you. What did we just read in John chapter fourteen about how we know God is with us?" "He gave us the Holy Spirit." "That's right! Because you belong to Jesus, you have the Holy Spirit in you to be with you and remind you of everything He has said. He will never leave you, and He gives you His peace." Kenna pulled out her pink Bible and found John 14. She read verse 18--I will not leave you as orphans. "God, I feel so alone because I really miss my mom. Will you keep reminding me of what You say--that You will never leave me? I'm not an orphan because I have You. Will you give my mom a big hug from me and tell her I'm going to shine my light for You just like she did?" Kenna hugged her cat close. "Milo, I'm sad Mom isn't here anymore, but I have hope because I know she's in heaven with Jesus, and He promises He'll never leave either one of us." Kenna scratched Milo's chin as he purred. "One day, I will see Mom again and give her the biggest hug ever! I may feel alone right now, but I know Jesus is with me." -Savannah ColemanHow About You?Have you ever lost someone you love? When someone close to you dies, sorrow and the feeling of being alone can seem like it's never going to end. If you're a child of God, you have hope to hold on to. You are never alone because Jesus is always with you. He will be with you in your loneliness and sorrow, and one day He will wipe all your tears away (Revelation 21:3-4). Today's Key Verse:The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. There are no guarantees that we won't face heartache and disappointment in life. But God guarantees that there is deep meaning in all the seasons of our life, and that grief can eventually give way to joy. This is reiterated in scripture, where in John 16:20, it says “You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.” Whether we are grieving the loss of a person, or experiencing disappointment that we haven't found what we're looking for in life, God will find a way to bring us beauty from the ashes.   Singer and songwriter Jimi Cravity is a two-time Dove Award nominee whose music has made its way into the hands of artists like Ludacris and Usher. Cravity faced the tragic loss of his son and made a stunning discovery about God and music during his deepest sadness. Leslie Means thought she was living her dream as a news anchor, but always felt that she was made for something more. With the encouragement of her husband Kyle, Leslie stepped away from her news job and went on to create an online community that helps women in times of need—Her View From Home—and found what she'd been meant to do all along.    Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: Luke Weaver Upcoming interview: Chapel Hart John 16:20 NIV   Jimi Cravity  Ludacris  Usher The Last Amen liver cancer Potter's House at One L.A. You never want to deal with loss, but what I can say now on the other side is that God has given me beauty for ashes, that He's given me a garment of praise instead of a spirit of heaviness, that He has turned despair into dancing, and I'm thankful for that.” - Jimi Cravity “I remember there were Sundays where all I could do was just go into the service and I would just go to the altar and kneel and weep. And it was in those moments that I felt very near to Christ, that I felt very near to God, that I felt the nearness of His Spirit, that I felt strength, that I felt Him in those moments of bowing and kneeling at the altar there.” - Jimi Cravity  “The Bible says that God is near to those who are brokenhearted. And I think it's really clear to feel that when you feel blessed, when everything is going your way, when you feel like you're on top of the world–but it's challenging to feel that and remember that when you are experiencing loss and when you're experiencing some of the darkest days that you could possibly experience.” - Jimi Cravity  “I remember driving around for my lunch breaks and I would call my mom. I would call her every day and I'd say, ‘Something is missing. I'm not where I'm supposed to be.'” - Leslie Means “I knew that God had such a bigger plan for this [Her View From Home website], something that I could never even fathom. And I remember specifically being like, ‘Okay, God, I'm going to keep going on this site as long as you want me to.'” - Leslie Means ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! Bible Reading: Isaiah 41:10-13Ivy looked out the window at her neighbor's house across the street. Their window was still broken from the break-in the day before. Shattered glass littered the porch. The burglar stole all the Martins' jewelry, plus a few electronics. The police still hadn't caught him. What if the burglar came back to the neighborhood? What if he broke into her house? Ivy trembled thinking about it."Are you cold?" asked a voice behind her.Ivy jumped, then saw it was her big sister, Rose. She breathed a sigh of relief. "I'm not cold," she said."Then why are you shaking?" asked Rose. She peeked out Ivy's window. "Are you still worried about what happened to the Martins?"Ivy bit her lip and nodded. "I'm scared to be home alone after school. What if the robber breaks into our house next time?"Rose sank onto Ivy's bed. "You're not scared when Dad's here, are you?""No. I feel safe when Dad's around," Ivy replied, joining her sister on the bed."Why?""Because I know that he loves me and will protect me," answered Ivy."Of course. Dads love their kids very much and will do anything to keep them from harm," said Rose. "But we have a greater and more powerful Father than Dad.""We do?" Ivy wrinkled her brow."Yes! The Bible tells us that, because we trust in Jesus, God is our heavenly Father. He loves you so much--more than Dad ever could. He is so much more powerful than Dad ever will be." Rose leaned closer to her little sister. "And He is always with you, even when Dad isn't.""So when I'm home alone, I'm not really alone?" asked Ivy."Exactly! We don't have to be afraid, because God is always with us. That doesn't mean bad things won't ever happen, but we don't need to live in fear, because we're His children and He's always watching over us." Rose gave her sister a hug. "He promises to take care of us, no matter what happens."Ivy smiled. "Then I guess I won't mind staying home alone so much.""Good," said Rose. "When you feel afraid, remember you're never alone. God is always with you." Emily GwaltneyHow About You?Do you ever feel afraid or alone? Whether you're scared of storms, snakes, or coming home to an empty house, remember that God is always with you. He loves you and will never leave you to face anything on your own. Even when bad or scary things happen, He promises to be with you and help you through them. So don't be afraid. Trust God to take care of you.Today's Key Verse:The Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. (NIV) (Deuteronomy 31:6)Today's Key Thought:God is always with you

James 1:2-4 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds,  3  for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.  4  And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (ESV) Matthew 4:1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. (NIV) Deuteronomy 8:2–5   Remember how the LORD your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands. (NLT) 3 Wrong Responses In The Wilderness 1. Complaining and blaming Numbers 21:4–5   They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea,  to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; 5  they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!” (NIV) Philippians 2:14-15 Do everything without complaining and arguing,  15  so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people. (NLT) 2. Mocking your miracles Exodus 16:2–3   In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. 3  The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.” (NIV) Numbers 11:4-6 The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, “If only we had meat to eat! 5  We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.  6  But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!” (NIV) Exodus 16:8 Moses also said, “You will know that it was the LORD when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the LORD.” (NIV) 3. Hustling backwards Exodus 14:11–12 They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? 12  Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!” (NIV) Exodus 16:3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.” (NIV) Exodus 17:3   But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?” (NIV) Numbers 11:5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. (NIV) Numbers 14:2–4 All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this wilderness! 3  Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?” 4  And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.” (NIV) Numbers 20:4–5   Why did you bring the LORD’s community into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die here? 5  Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates. And there is no water to drink!” (NIV) Numbers 21:5 they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!” (NIV) Numbers 14:11   The LORD said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs I have performed among them? (NIV) Exodus 7:16 Then say to him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to say to you: Let my people go, so that they may worship me in the wilderness. But until now you have not listened. (NIV) Philippians 3:12–14   Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13  Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14  I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. (NIV)

Essie couldn't believe it. "We're moving WHERE?" "This is so cool! I'm moving to AFRICA!" her older brother, Erik, shouted. "I can't believe this is happening!" her sister, Sadie, cried. "Will I have to wear one of those turbans on my head?" "Woo hoo!" their five-year-old brother, Davis, yelled as he ran in circles. "All right, kids, calm down," Dad said. "We don't know if we'll actually be moving yet. But your mom and I feel like the Lord may be leading us to be missionaries in Kenya, and we wanted to tell you now so we can all pray about it as a family." Mom nodded in agreement. "If this is where God wants us to go, then we'll go together." "But Africa?" Sadie whined. "It's, like, on the other side of the world. I won't know anyone!" "Hey, what am I--chopped liver?" Erik asked, crossing his arms. Essie grinned. "With a cherry on top." "Yuck!" Davis said with a silly face, making his family laugh. Dad cleared his throat to get everyone's attention. "Who remembers the Bible verse we've been memorizing?" Essie thought she knew. "Moses is talking to God and says something about God's presence." She looked at Erik. "Help me out here." "Something about not going somewhere if God wasn't going with them?" Erik offered. "Right," Dad said. "Let's say it together." "Exodus 33:15,"the family chorused. "'then Moses said to Him, "If your Presencedoes not go with us, do not send us up from here."'" "What do you think that means?" Mom asked. Calmer now, Sadie suggested, "I think it means we need to pray about this and trust Jesus to help us make the right decision so we know what to do." "And remember that no matter what, He'll always be with us," Essie added. "Exactly." Mom smiled. "I know this will be a big change for all of us if we end up going, but remember that if Jesus sends us, He'll be going with us. Just like He's been with us here in South Carolina, He'll be with us on the other side of the world." Kelly Hope How About You? Are you facing a big change in your life? This is episode 2 in our series discussing the character and theme development of “God” in the Bible. In part 1, (0-17:25) the guys discuss the meaning of Monotheism in the Bible and Ancient Judaism. Tim offers a modern definition of monotheism as - “The belief or doctrine that there is only one God” -- Dictionary.com Tim says this is different than an ancient definition because last week, we’ve already seen that the biblical authors do not believe there’s only one Elohim. Rather, Biblical/Jewish Monotheism could be defined as = “The belief that there is one supreme Elohim (Creator and Ruler) who has no rivals among all other Elohim: Yahweh the God of Israel.” So, Tim offers resources for more accurate definitions of what the ancient Hebrews believed. William Horbury has proposed a nuanced definition: Inclusive Monotheism: Yahweh is the supreme deity in association with other divine spirits and powers. Exclusive Monotheism: Denies the existence of any divine beings other than Yahweh. However, there is no evidence that any ancient Israelites or Jews or Christians believed in that definition of “Exclusive Monotheism.” In part 2, (17:25-end) Tim continues to express his frustration with the current definition of exclusive monotheism. Tim cites several Old Testament examples. (NIV) Deuteronomy 4:35 “You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD is God; beside him, there is no other.” In Hebrew it literally says …”know that Yahweh, he is the Elohim, there is not another besides him.” In these passages, Elohim has the Hebrew word “the” attached (ha-elohim), which means the claim being made is that Yahweh alone is the chief God, not that Yahweh is the only elohim that exists. Tim cites Michael Heiser on this point saying “ A close reading of these passages in Deuteronomy and Isaiah shows… that the denials are not claiming that other אֱלֹהִים (elohim) do not exist, but that Yahweh’s has unique and incomparable qualities in relation to other gods: Yahweh’s pre-existence, his role as creator of all things, including other elohim, his ability to save, and national deliverance. The focus is on Yahweh’s incomparable status and the impotence of the other gods. It would be empty praise to compare Yahweh to beings that did not exist. The biblical authors assume they do exists, but that they are “nothing” compared to Yahweh.” -- Michael Heiser, “The Divine Council,” The Lexham Bible Dictionary. Next week on the show, Tim and Jon discuss “The Divine Council” It will be an exciting and mind-bending episode! February 1, 2008 Souper Bowl Sunday The Fire Still Burns Mark 1:21-28; Deuteronomy18:15-20 Sermon Synopsis: Cold winter weather brings out a threat of house fires and dramatically increases the since of loose associated with a fire. Why would we then go without smoke detectors and fire alarms since they are so readily available? Every time a house fire is reported our since of urgency mounts as does the demand for us to do something! The fear of fire caused the people of Israel to distance themselves from God. The fire that guided them was no natural fire and that made them even more fearful of it. They feared the fire and the voice of God that spoke through the fire. John the Baptist introduced Jesus as the one who baptizes with fire. That may explain why some are afraid to approach him. Fire not only heats our homes it has the potential of destroying them. The fire of Jesus purifies and empowers believers in the face and adversity and frees them of the fear of a judgment of fire. The job of the church is to keep the fires of the Gospel burning bright. The fire of Jesus still purifies and empowers believers for life. Let’s keep the fires burning. Scripture References from NIV: Deuteronomy 18:15-20 (people afraid of the fire); Matthew 3:11 (baptism of fire); Mark 1:21-28 (Jesus in Capernaum).
