Bible Reading: James 1:21-27"What time was it when you put dinner in the oven, Dad?" asked Liam. "I'm hungry! It seems like we've been waiting a long time for that lasagna to be ready, but I don't even smell it yet.""I don't either," said Dad. He glanced at his watch. "The recipe said it would need to bake about an hour." Dad got up and went to the kitchen. "Oh no!" he exclaimed. "The button on the oven must have gotten stuck again--the oven didn't turn on! Looks like dinner won't be ready for a while.""But Dad, I'm starving!" groaned Liam."I'm sorry. Let's have an apple while we wait." They each chose a shiny red apple. "This reminds me of what Pastor Grey said at church last week," Dad remarked as he and Liam bit into their apples. "Do you remember what he told us?" Liam nodded. "He said we often take in God's Word, but we don't apply it to our lives. But what's that got to do with the oven and our lasagna?""Well, we learn about God by going to church and reading the Bible. God's Word tells us how amazing He is and how we can have a relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus, who died and rose again to save us from sin. It also tells us how to live as His people so others can see His love in our lives. But if we hear what the Bible says but don't put it into practice, it's like we don't turn God's truth on in our lives. The knowledge just sits there--cold, like our lasagna. We need to do what the Bible says. The first thing we must do is trust in Jesus so He can fill our lives with His peace, love, and joy. Otherwise we're left--""Hungry," Liam finished with a frown. "Like I am now!""Spiritually hungry," said Dad. "And we can't continue to put God's words into practice by being kind and loving and unselfish toward others when we're spiritually hungry.""Yeah," said Liam. "I have trouble doing those things when I'm physically hungry!"Dad laughed. "Then it's a good thing I can smell the lasagna cooking!" –Nance E. Bible Reading: Psalm 103:8-12; Ephesians 4:1-2; 1 Timothy 1:15-16"The art competition is tomorrow, so make sure you finish your pots today," Miss Boone told the class. "Your final step is sealant, but don't forget--" "What do you think of my pot, Miss Boone?" Alex raised his pot above his head."You've done a fantastic job, Alex, but you interrupted me while I was speaking. Now, as I was saying, you must wait for the paint to dry completely or the sealant will ruin your design. Please be patient.""You'll probably win a ribbon, Alex," said Miguel, Alex's best friend. Alex reached for the sealant. "I'll be the first one done too! Watch!" "Alex, wait!" Miguel pointed to the paint. "It's still wet. Remember what Miss Boone said? Be patient or you'll ruin the design on your pot." "I've waited long enough." Alex painted on sealant super-fast and put his project on the counter. "I win!" he shouted. Before the competition, Alex stood outside the library where the artwork was displayed. "Is it time?" he asked when he saw Miss Boone coming to unlock the door. "Can I go in? I want to go in first!" Once the doors were opened, Alex hurried in without noticing anyone else's artwork. "Where's mine?" he asked."Look up there, Alex." Miss Boone pointed to the table displaying pots with ribbons draped over them. Alex sprinted over. "I don't see it! Where's my pot, Miss Boone?" Miss Boone pointed again, and Alex shook his head. "That's not mine." Then he looked more closely and gasped. "The sealant! It ruined my design!"Miguel walked over and laughed when he saw Alex's pot. "You need to be more patient, Alex. That sealant made your pot look weird!"Alex sighed. His parents and Sunday school teacher were always telling him to be patient too, because Jesus was patient and always thought of others instead of only thinking of Himself. I'm sorry, Lord, he prayed silently. Please help me slow down and think of others. You're always patient with me, and I know you can help me be patient too.Miguel nudged him, "Hey, look--you got a ribbon for 'Most Unique!'"Before the awards ceremony, Miss Boone asked each ribbon winner if they had a title for their artwork. "I do, Miss Boone," said Alex. "I'm calling mine 'Patience.'"–Kelly CarlsonHow About You?Do you patiently follow directions or do things your own way? Do you charge ahead without thinking of anyone else? It's not easy to be patient, especially when you're excited for something or know exactly what you want, but the Bible tells us to be patient. When you slow down and think things through, you'll be more loving and considerate toward the people around you--just like Jesus.Today's Key Verse:Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. (NIV) (James 1:19)Today's Key Thought:Be patient

Bible Reading: Philippians 4:4-7; 1 John 5:14-15"A-vee-air-ee," read Logan, looking at the sign above the door of one of the buildings at the zoo. He was visiting the zoo with his Uncle Mike. "What does that mean?" asked Logan."An aviary is a place where birds are kept. Let's see what kinds they have here." They opened the door and heard a lot of chirping and squawking, and as they walked through the building, they saw many different kinds of birds. "Look over there." Uncle Mike pointed toward a flamingo standing on one leg. "That one is asleep.""What a funny way to sleep!" said Logan. "How can that one skinny leg hold up such a big bird?""Well, all I can tell you is that's the way God made it," said Uncle Mike. "It's amazing, isn't it?" Logan grinned and nodded. After leaving the aviary, Uncle Mike bought them each a snack. As they sat on a bench and munched their chips, Logan was very quiet. "Thinking about your parents again?" asked Uncle Mike."Yeah," said Logan. "I just know they're going to get a divorce.""Now, you don't know that for sure, Logan. The reason you're here with me this weekend is so they could go to that marriage seminar. I think they're going to try to work things out.""Well, maybe," said Logan. "I know that's what they talked about, but I wish I could do something to help them.""You can pray," said Uncle Mike."I already do that," said Logan. "I pray all the time! But that's just a little thing.""That's what you said about the flamingo's leg," Uncle Mike reminded him. "But that little leg held the whole bird up, didn't it? And though our prayers may seem small, God uses them to do great things. Even when things don't turn out the way we want, we can have peace knowing that He hears us when we pray and promises to work through our prayers to do good things and show people His love." Uncle Mike smiled. "That's the way God made it." –Sara L. NelsonHow About You?Do you have problems that are totally out of your control, and the only thing you can do about them is pray? Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:30; 2:16; Colossians 2:2-3The teacher handed out the graded test papers, placing them face down on the desks. Layla was afraid to turn hers over and instead slipped it into her notebook without looking. When the bell rang, she shoved her notebook and jacket into her backpack and headed for home.Halfway to her house, Layla sat on a stack of tires at the corner of an auto repair shop. She pulled out her notebook and then the graded test. Just as she thought--a big red F! She wadded the test paper up and threw it in the trash can next to the mechanic's garage."I hate school!" exclaimed Layla as she walked into the kitchen. "Reading is too hard." Mom looked concerned. "Isn't that special reading class helping you?""Not really." Layla sat in a chair with a sigh. "The teacher is nice and all, but nothing seems to change. I feel so dumb!" Mom smoothed Layla's hair away from her face. "You're not dumb, Layla. I know you want to do better with your reading, and I'm proud of you for working so hard. Reading is an important skill to have in life, and I'm glad you want to learn how to do it well." Mom smiled thoughtfully. "Did you know there's something even more important to have in your life--something you can't learn on your own?"Layla shook her head. "What's that?""Wisdom," answered Mom. "Wisdom lets us know what is true and right and shows us how to apply that truth to our lives.""How do we get wisdom?" asked Layla."I was hoping you'd ask," said Mom with a grin. "The Bible tells us to ask God for wisdom, and He will gladly give it to us." "So, I just need to pray and I'll be smarter?" Layla asked, looking confused."Being wise is more than being smart and knowing information--it's about knowing God's truth and trusting in Him. In order to have wisdom, we need to have faith in Jesus. Then, as He works in our lives through the Holy Spirit, we will grow in wisdom and in our knowledge of Him.""I'm glad God gives us wisdom when we ask for it," said Layla. "I'm going to pray and ask Him to help me with my reading too!" –Bonnie CarrHow About You?Do you wish you were smarter? Do you have questions you can't figure out the answer to? While it's important to study in school and learn new things, you'll never have all the answers. Only God does, and knowing Him is more important than knowing anything else. Ask Him to give you wisdom, and He will help you see how much you need Jesus. When you know Him as your Savior, He will help you grow in wisdom and understanding.Today's Key Verse:If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. (NIV) (James 1:5 )Today's Key Thought:Pray for wisdom

Bible Reading: Ephesians 4:31-32; James 1:19-27; 4:17Ramona came down to breakfast with a scowl on her face. Her day was already off to a bad start. Her favorite sweater had a hole in it, and she had forgotten to do her math homework. While she ate her pancakes with blueberry syrup, Mom asked her to read a Bible verse for morning devotions. "Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you," read Ramona.Just then Jodi, Ramona's three-year-old sister, poked her with her plastic alligator. Startled, Ramona jumped up and knocked over her juice. "Look what you made me do!" shouted Ramona, dabbing at her soaked T-shirt. "You're such a pest!" Jodi began to cry as Ramona stomped upstairs to change. When she came back down, she grabbed her backpack and rushed out the door. After school, Ramona came home and plopped herself down at the table. "Did you have a tough day?" asked Mom gently."Today was the worst. I got a zero in math, and the other kids were laughing and pointing at me all morning. It wasn't until after recess when I went to the bathroom that I saw why they were laughing--I had blueberry syrup on my nose! I was so mad at my friends for not telling me, I told them I would never speak to them again!" "Do you remember what you read for devotions at breakfast?" Mom asked.Ramona looked down and shook her head."Well, it looks like blueberry syrup wasn't the only thing you missed in the mirror this morning," said Mom. "Huh?" asked Ramona, confused. "God's Word is like a mirror. When we read it, it shows us what's wrong in our hearts and points to our need for Jesus. It tells us to go to Him for forgiveness and to trust Him to help us treat others with love and kindness. But if we read it and don't do what it says, it's like ignoring a big smudge of blueberry syrup on the end of your nose."Ramona thought about yelling at her sister and her friends. "I guess I need to be sure to check my face and my heart in the mirror before I leave for school." -Laura KuehnHow About You?Do you pay attention when you hear or read God's Word? Do you do what it says and turn to Jesus for forgiveness and help? Don't just read God's Word--let it be a mirror for your heart. When God shows you smudges of sin in your life, confess them to Jesus and trust Him to wipe them away and help you show others His love.Today's Key Verse:Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. (NIV) (James 1:22)Today's Key Thought:Obey God's Word
By Rev Charlie Lacey | James 5:7-12James 5:7-12 (NIV)James tells us to be patient in the face of suffering. We're not all suffering right now, but we will all suffer at some point in our lives. James says, be patient because Jesus is going to return, his promises will be fulfilled, and ultimately, all wrongs will be put right.
Bible Reading: Romans 3:10-12; 6:23"There has been a lot of note-passing going on lately," announced Mrs. Barnes. "Anyone I see passing a note from now on will stay in at recess." Cam nodded. He had noticed a lot of the kids passing notes too.The next day, Cam watched as Lincoln and Josiah passed notes back and forth. They'd better watch it, he thought, or they're gonna have to stay in for recess. He decided to write a note to warn his friends to be careful. As Cam slipped his note to Josiah, Mrs. Barnes looked up. "Cam, Josiah, and Lincoln--you will all stay in at recess today.""Me?" asked Cam. "What did I do?""I saw you passing a note," said Mrs. Barnes. "You will stay in with the other boys." And so the three boys spent afternoon recess at their desks. That evening, Cam complained about his punishment. "I wrote one note!" he grumbled. "The other guys wrote lots more. It's not fair!""How many notes did Mrs. Barnes say you could write?" asked Dad."Well…none. But I still think she could have let me play outside at least half the time since the others wrote so many more notes than I did!""Even though you only wrote one note, you were guilty as charged, weren't you?" said Dad. "I guess, but I still wasn't as bad as the others," Cam insisted."Your argument reminds me of people who think God should excuse them because they don't think they're as bad as other people they know," said Dad. "The fact is that everyone has sinned, and the Bible says that makes each one of us a sinner guilty before God, no matter how our sins compare to someone else's. You passed a note in class knowing it was against the rules, and you got the punishment you deserved."Cam sighed and propped his head on his elbows. "I guess I did deserve to stay in at recess," he finally admitted. He gave his dad a sideways glance. "You're gonna point out that we don't need to be punished for our sin though, aren't you?" Dad grinned. "I sure am! Even though each one of us deserves that punishment, Jesus died on the cross to save us from it. He took the punishment for our sin so we wouldn't have to!" -Hazel W. MarettHow About You?Do you think you're pretty good--better than a lot of kids you know? God says everyone is a sinner. We're all equally guilty of breaking God's law, and we all deserve to be punished. But the wonderful thing is that Jesus died to take the punishment for our sin. By Rev Charlie Lacey | James 1: 19-27 James 1: 19-27 (NIV) James challenges the way we live our lives, by making the point that it is not enough for us to hear God's word, we've also got to respond to it. In today's passage James focusses on anger and our use of words, but his message is clear: real faith obeys.

Bible Reading: Psalm 40:1-5When Brody got home from school on his birthday, Dad winked and said, "Head out to the back porch. There's a special treat waiting for you on the picnic table."Brody ran outside as quickly as he could. The picnic table held two paper plates and a large empty platter smeared with icing. Brody frowned. "Hey, Dad?"Dad came out to the porch. "Yeah?""Is this platter supposed to be empty?"Dad's forehead wrinkled, and he scratched his chin. "What in the world…"Brody looked under the picnic table. A few crumbs sprinkled the ground. He swallowed. "It was my birthday cake, wasn't it?""It was. But where did it go?"Brody didn't want to throw a fit on his birthday. He was a year older. He was supposed to be more mature. But his eyes burned. He wiped his hand under his eyes, determined not to let tears fall. "We have to solve this mystery."The crumbs beneath the table led down the porch and into the yard, leaving a faint trail. Brody and his dad followed them to the edge of the backyard where the woods began. Not too far away, in the middle of the trees, movement caught Brody's eye. "Dad, look!" he whispered. They watched as a black bear devoured the last piece of Brody's cake. Then it scrambled into the woods.Brody's disappointment faded. His laughter started small at first, but then increased until tears streamed down his cheeks. "A bear ate my birthday cake!"Dad laughed too. "Don't worry, Brody," he said. "The day's not over. We'll still get you a birthday treat.""It's okay, Dad," Brody said. "I've always wanted to see a bear--and today one came into our backyard! God gave me the best birthday gift ever."Dad chuckled. "It's probably not the birthday gift you were expecting, but God loves to give His children gifts. He gave us the best gift of all--His Son, Jesus. And He gives us other gifts and blessings to remind us of His love."Brody smiled, thinking of how God cared about him enough to give him this wonderful surprise. And Brody knew no birthday cake would ever amount to the love God gave him each and every day. -Becca WierwilleHow About You?Where have you noticed God's love lately? We often get so caught up in what we want that we forget to notice the ways God shows us His love in everyday, ordinary moments. We are God's beloved children. Welcome to Day 2119 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom James – Wisdom is Faith in Action 1 – Who is James – Daily Wisdom Putnam Church Message – 09/05/2021 JAMES: WISDOM IS FAITH IN ACTION – WHO IS JAMES? As mentioned last week, we are beginning a new series today on the Proverbs of the New Testament, better known as the book of James. This letter is chocked full of practical wisdom on how to live the life of a radical disciple, which we focused on during August. Today I want to provide a background of who James is, and why he is so uniquely fit to author the first book written in the New Testament. Since most of the lesson today sets the stage for our study through James, which may take many weeks to complete, we will only cover one verse today, James 1:1. Thus, this lesson will be somewhat academic in nature before we explore the depths of the wisdom found in James. James 1:1 (NIV) James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings. James 1:1 (NLT) This letter is from James, a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. I am writing to the “twelve tribes”—Jewish believers scattered abroad. We live in a world where politics rules the day. In this world, a person's public reputation too often drowns out the private reality. Who you know usually trumps what you know. Name-dropping often gets you farther than talent or skill. These cynical sayings not only apply to the political realm, where quid pro quo is the status quo. Unfortunately, the “good of boy” system also tends to corrupt most areas of business, academia, entertainment—and, yes, even the church. This is why the opening words of the book of James are so refreshing. Like a cool spring breeze blowing through a musty room, the unassuming nature of these first few words drives out arrogance, ego, and presumption. Written by a man who could have dropped the Name above all names, this simple, straightforward greeting sets the tone for a letter that assaults our natural human tendencies toward sin and selfishness with a radical message of authenticity and humility. That begs the question, which is today's message titled ‘Who is James?' From the very first phrase, the name “James,” this short letter presents us with a problem: Which “James” wrote this letter? Unfortunately, his humble self-identification as “a bond-servant (or slave) of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ” (1:1) doesn't get us far. So, unless we were among those first recipients of the letter, we are left to some old-fashioned sleuthing to determine which James penned these words. If you run through the New Testament, you'll come across four men with this name. It's relatively easy to rule out a couple of these. First, James, the father of Judas (not Iscariot), never appears in the New Testament except in Luke 6:16. James, the son of Alphaeus, is probably the same as “James the Less.” Although he is one of the Twelve, he disappears from the biblical account after the upper room experience on Pentecost (Acts 1:13). So these two can be safely dismissed as unlikely candidates for authorship. This leaves James, the son of Zebedee and brother of the apostle John, or James, the half-brother of Jesus. Though the first James, a “Son of Thunder,” played a significant leadership role in the infant church as one of Christ's inner three (Peter, James, and John), he was the first of the Twelve to suffer martyrdom under Herod Agrippa I. That occurred around ad 44 in persecution that resulted in further scattered the Jewish Christians throughout the Roman world (Acts 12:2). Shortly after this...
Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. Rahab the prostitute walks into God's redemptive plan. What a life of hardship and difficulty she endured, and yet in her journey, Rahab experienced an amazing RESCUE! This Canaanite woman presents a beautiful picture of God's redemptive grace. He uses unlikely people to accomplish His purposes. He is a sovereign God. He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. Rahab is seeking God in the midst of her very messy Life Journey. Rahab presents her statement of faith, “For the Lord your God is the supreme God of the heavens above and the earth below.” Rahab had a longing in her heart. She was seeking after the One, True God – the One who would truly change her life. SONG: "Rescue Story" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8ZbYfedDbk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8ZbYfedDbk)

Being on the same team is important, and you don't have to play the same position. This week we talk about being same-minded in your marriage. We talk about how we are striving for combined success in our marriage. Even if we have different personalities and hobbies, we are unified in our marriage. When tough times happen, we remember that we are always in this together. Philippians 2: 2 "then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind." (NIV)James 4: 1-4 "What is the cause of your conflicts and quarrels with each other? Doesn't the battle begin inside of you as you fight to have your own way and fulfill your own desires? 2You jealously want what others have so you begin to see yourself as better than others. You scheme with envy and harm others to selfishly obtain what you crave—that's why you quarrel and fight. And all the time you don't obtain what you want because you won't ask God for it! 3And if you ask, you won't receive it for you're asking with corrupt motives, seeking only to fulfill your own selfish desires. 4You have become spiritual adulterers who are having an affair, an unholy relationship with the world. Don't you know that flirting with the world's values places you at odds with God? Whoever chooses to be the world's friend makes himself God's enemy!" Bible Reading: Jeremiah 1:8-9; James 1:2-6"Can I stay home tomorrow?" Prisha asked her mom, setting her backpack on the floor.Mom looked surprised. "Why? Do you feel sick?""No, but II have a problem, and if I don't go to school, I won't have to worry about it."Mom waited, so Prisha went on to explain. "Rowan wants me to let her see my answers on our math test tomorrow. Of course, I won't do it, but I don't want her to be mad at me."Mom raised her brows. "So if you stay home tomorrow, you won't have to face the unpleasantness of telling her that you believe cheating is wrong?" Prisha nodded, looking hopeful. Just then, Shyla awoke from her nap and began to cry. "Would you go get your sister, please?" said Mom.Prisha hurried to the baby's room and lifted her from the crib. Shyla stopped crying and wriggled, trying to get down. "Are you ready to practice walking again, Shyla?" asked Prisha as she returned to the kitchen. She bent to set the baby down on the floor."Don't put her down," said Mom. "She might fall and get hurt." Prisha gave Mom a puzzled look, and Mom shrugged. "She'll walk when she's older."Prisha frowned. "But, Mom! Shyla won't learn to walk if she doesn't practice.""That's true," Mom replied. "You can see that Shyla needs to practice walking, and I'm hoping you'll see that you need to practice something too. You need to practice speaking up about what you believe." "Youyou mean I should tell Rowan it's wrong to copy. It's cheating," Prisha murmured. "But what if I say the wrong thing and make her mad?""Ask Jesus for help--He'll give it," said Mom. "He's with you all the time and will help you do the right thing and let others know where you stand. Rowan might not like it, but that will give you an opportunity to tell her that you don't want to do wrong things because Jesus has saved you from sin. You can practice depending on Him to help you." She gave Prisha a hug. "Why not call Rowan right now and let her know you won't help her cheat but you'll help her study?" Prisha hesitated. "Okay. I'll do that." -Karen E. Do you consider yourself rich or poor? Or maybe you think you are somewhere in the middle. You know, neither rich nor poor. The funny thing is, being rich is really a relative thing. People can usually think of someone richer than they are. So they tend not to view themselves as rich. Let's change the thought a bit. James wrote in his book about the rich and poor. Most of us today would be considered incredibly wealthy by James. The wealthy of his day had servants. Today, we have replaced servants with things such as microwaves, washing machines, automobiles, automatic vacuums, plumbing and electricity. We have access to electronic devices, meal delivery services and medical care. So don't kid yourself. You are rich. Listen to what James says to us in James 1:9-10, “The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business.” (NIV) James reminds of an undeniable truth about life. Even as we go about our business, we will fade away. We last a short time. So focus on receiving the crown of life that God gives to those who love him! Bible Reading: James 3:5-12"How about a hike up one of the mountain trails before dinner?" Mr. Charles called out to the boys in his church youth group. This camping trip was a yearly event they'd all been looking forward to."Yes!" exclaimed several of the boys. They eagerly scrambled up and started out. After hiking a while, they came across a spring of water. "My great-grandpa said that when he was a boy, he drank water from a spring in the woods behind their house," said Nathan. "Can we get a drink here?"Mr. Charles shook his head. "Better not. The water may be okay, but I don't know. Besides, even if it's good, there might only be enough fresh water for one or two of you before it turns salty."Nathan gave Mr. Charles a puzzled look. "If it's a freshwater spring, it wouldn't turn salty! A spring doesn't give two kinds of water."Mr. Charles smiled. "That's exactly right. The Bible makes that point when it talks about controlling our tongues. The book of James says that just like a spring doesn't give both fresh and salty water, a person whose heart is filled with Jesus's love doesn't say both loving and unkind words."Nathan remembered the angry words he had exchanged with his friend Tate that morning as they were setting up their tent. I've been talking to him a lot lately about Jesus, and I invited him on this camping trip, Nathan thought. But what I said today sure didn't show Jesus's love. "When we trust in Jesus, He fills us with His love," Mr. Charles continued. "Like water bubbling up from a spring, the words we speak should flow from that love. If you've been careless in that area, ask Jesus and anyone you've hurt to forgive you. Trust God to help you make sure your words come from the pure source of love He's put in your heart. Now, who needs a drink?""From this spring?" asked Nathan. "You said we shouldn't drink from it.""No, not from this spring." Mr. Charles smiled. "From the water bottles you brought along."As the boys drank from their water bottles, Nathan prayed silently, asking Jesus to forgive him for his angry words. Then he went to find Tate so he could ask his forgiveness too. -Deana RogersHow About You?Do your words bubble up from the spring of love Jesus has put in your heart? Or do you sometimes say things that are hurtful and unkind? Salty words shouldn't be coming from the mouth of someone who's been changed by Jesus. He's filled you with His love so you can show it to others. Let the words you speak flow out of the love He's given you.Today's Key Verse:Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? (NIV) (James 3:10-11)Today's Key Thought:Use words that show Jesus's love

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God,” says the Beatitude in Matthew 5:8. We've learned that the word pure means clean. And we know that the word heart refers to the entire inner being. But I see a problem, do you? Proverbs 20:9 puts it this way, “Who can say, ‘I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin'?” (NIV) I know I haven't kept my heart pure! I bet the same is true for you. Jesus called out the Pharisees because they thought they were good, moral people. He called them “white-washed tombs.” So what are we to do? How can we be blessed if our hearts are not pure? James 4:7-8 tells us, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (NIV) James is telling us to change our direction. He uses the idea of washing, not as a ritual, but as our appeal to God for forgiveness. God is the one who can forgive and cleanse our conscience. Having a pure heart is totally dependent on God. We must have the attitude of David in Psalm 51:10. He said, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (NIV) That is the path to blessing! Welcome to Day 1743 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomLife in Thankfulness – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. We are on Day 1743 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver! If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Bengt Sundberg, and it is: A life in thankfulness releases the glory of God. Life In Thankfulness Thankfulness in our lives is just one way of bringing glory to God. Adopting a mindset of gratitude allows us to take our minds off ourselves and our selfish desires. When we take on this mindset, we become thankful for all the blessings pouring through our lives by the hands of others, and of course, from God. Living life in thankfulness is a choice. Even if not every situation in our lives is favorable, we can still be thankful for the difficult times because they mature us into better people. When we are thankful, we are kind to others, and we treat them in the same manner as we would like to be treated. Knowing that God is the provider of every good and perfect gift, we can count it all joy, regardless of the circumstance we face. Thankfulness is also contagious. The more we show gratitude and express our thankfulness to others, they will catch that contagion and be more thankful themselves. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James+1%3A17-18&version=NLT;NIV (James 1:17-18) Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Assembling words goes way back for Jon Edward Fugler. Growing up in Upstate New York, his first writing effort was to publish a neighborhood newspaper — which lasted one issue. In middle school, Jon printed and distributed a newsletter to his classmates and teachers reporting on his board game baseball league. In 1973, Jon came to know Christ after hearing a college football coach speak on how to be born again. This event would change the course of his life and writing. He spent over 30 years in Christian radio, turning out script after script, beginning as the radio writer for Dr. Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ. From there, he wrote scores of scripts that would impact the hearts of radio listeners across the country. Jon's writing extended into print when, for a decade, he published the Christian Times newspaper, connecting believers with what God was doing in their community. Journaling has been Jon's habit for over four decades. He sometimes looks back on those writings to inspire him for his current works. His conversational style connects with readers on a personal level. Writing from his heart, he hopes readers' lives will be different through their relationship with Jesus Christ. “It's not about performing for Jesus,” says Jon. “It's about living with Jesus.” He was influenced by author Skye Jethani, who teaches that life over, under or for God leads to defeat. Life withGod is what every person desires. Jon sensed that developing a habit of doing life with God was missing for believers. That's what inspired him to write his devotional series, starting with Life with God: 30 Days of Joy. “I feel that if someone can immerse themselves in one aspect of the Christian life for 30 days, it will change them,” says Jon. “This series is not about behavior. It's all about relationship. The reader's relationship with God. Growth happens when a person lets God flood their life.” Jon's passion is that every person on earth has access to the gospel. He is active today in media ministry to the world. He and his wife live in North Carolina. They have three children and eight grandchildren. -How Jon came to faith at the age of 16...4:40 -The hard-charging high achiever for God hits a brick wall...8:25 -Embracing a mindset of "missionalism"...10:25 -What does it mean to really know Christ personally?...14:15 -Signs that our intimacy w/ God is waning...16:20 -Developing a relationship with God that supersedes a high performance mentality...21:15 -Love is spelled T.I.M.E...25:25 -How to cultivate fresh faith in God...27:45 -We won't truly pursue God until this happens...30:20 Resources mentioned: -Fresh Faith 24/7, Jon's website -https://amzn.to/32EE7xb (Radical) by David Platt -https://www.amazon.com/Reimagining-Way-You-Relate-God/dp/1595553797 (With: Reimagining How You Relate to God) by Skye Jethani -https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=philippians+3%3A8-10&version=NIV (Philippians 3:8-10) -https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=james+1%3A22&version=NIV (James 1:22) -https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=john+15&version=NIV (John 15) Call to action: To find out more about Todd and his coaching program for men, find him on the web at https://my.captivate.fm/dashboard/shows/toddisberner.com (toddisberner.com) To learn more about Wendie and her Visibly Fit program, visit wendiepett.com All the links you need to subscribe to the podcast are at both our websites! James 1:1-8 (NIV) James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings. Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.
Bible Reading: Matthew 7:1-5; 1 John 1:7-9 "Have you finished cleaning your room already?" asked Mom as Kennedy joined her outside. Kennedy nodded but avoided her mother's eyes. She had not cleaned her room at all, but she intended to get it done before Mom checked later.Kennedy waved at a neighbor girl. "You know, Mom, it seems like Sara is always doing something wrong. She cheats sometimes when we play games, and she tells the biggest lies!""That's too bad," said Mom, "but you sin sometimes too. Right?""Wellyeah." Kennedy remembered the lie she had just told--but it seemed like such a little one. Besides, I didn't really lie, she thought. I just nodded. "But the stuff I do isn't half as bad as what Sara does," Kennedy said as her little sister, Ellie, came out of the house. "Mommy," Ellie called,"can I--" Her question ended in a wail as she fell. Mom and Kennedy hurried to help her. "My foot hurts," said Ellie with a sob. Upon investigating, they discovered that with bare feet, Ellie had stepped on a sharp, little rock. After caring for Ellie, Mom turned to Kennedy. "You compared yourself to Sara, but don't think your sins are less important in God's eyes than hers are. The Bible says if we break just one small part of God's law, we're as guilty as we'd be if we broke every part.""How can that be?" asked Kennedy. "I don't get it."Mom held out the rock Ellie had stepped on. "This is small, but it hurt your sister and caused her to fall--same as if it had been a bigger rock she stumbled over. It's something like that with sin. In God's sight, there are no big or small sins. It's all just plain sin."Kennedy frowned. "So I might as well do the things Sara does because it's all the same to God anyway?" "No, but instead of pointing a finger at others, we need to confess our own sins to Jesus. Our sin has caused each one of us to stumble and fall, but Jesus picks us back up. He forgives us."Kennedy was quiet for a moment. "I didn't really clean my room," she said. "I'm sorry. I'll do it now." She looked at her mom. "And I'll think twice before saying I'm better than somebody else." (Deborah S. Marett)How About You?Do you think of sins as either big or little? God doesn't. To Him, sin is simply sin, and all sin is detestable to Him. That's why He sent His Son, Jesus, to save us from it--so we could be forgiven. None of us has any right to think we're better than someone else. Instead of being critical of others, look for sins in your own life. Then confess them to Jesus. Today's Key Verse:For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.(NIV) (James 2:10)Today's Key Thought:God hates all sin
Ever feel ignored by God? Like he’s withholding answers to the prayers you’ve desperately prayed? We may feel like he’s holding out on us at times, but that’s not true. According to the verses I read in today’s episode of the Believe & Speak podcast, God does not withhold good things from us. When God doesn’t give me what I’m asking him for, I try hard not to think of it as him saying, “No, you can’t have that.” Instead, I imagine God saying, “No, that wouldn’t be good for you right now.” The idea of God only withholding what would not be good for me reminds me of Proverbs 30:8-9, which says, “give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.” (NIV) James also speaks to those of us who may think God is holding out on us. In Chapter 4, he writes, “You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives.” (James 4:2b-3a NIV) When we ask God with pure motives for good things to be given at the right time, God hears us. He is not slow in keeping his promises to us—at least according to his timeline. One day in the courts of the Lord is better than a thousand elsewhere. The Lord God is your sun and shield. He bestows favor and honor. That means he will always protect you and provide for you. Saying this week’s declaration will help you remember these truths. 10-Day Reading Plan http://bible.us/r/6Ra Longing to Belong: Discovering the Joy of Acceptance is now available for purchase on Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Walmart.com, Booksamillion.com and Christianbook.com. Bible Reading: James 4:13-14"Look at that bumper sticker." Grant pointed ahead. "It says, 'Life is short, and then you die.'" Grant looked at his mother. "Is that supposed to be funny?""Maybe--but it's not funny," said Mom. "It does make a point though. Remember all the cicadas that were around last summer?""Those big bugs that were kind of like grasshoppers, but with big wings?" Grant asked. "The ones that were always making a lot of noise?" He laughed. "They were always flying into people too."Mom nodded. "They show up every seventeen years," she said. "At my high school graduation party, they got into our clothes and in our hair! It wasn't a very fun party. But the cicadas don't last very long. They live for only about six weeks.""Sounds like that bumper sticker could apply to them," observed Grant. "Like it says, their lives are short, and then they die. But when you said the bumper sticker makes a point, you weren't talking about cicadas, were you?""No. A cicada's life is very short compared to the lives of most people, but in a way, our lives are just as short. Take your great-grandmother, for instance. She's ninety-eight years old.""Yeah--she's lived a really long time!" Grant said."It seems that way to us, but ninety-eight years is only a short time to God, who is eternal," said Mom. "James 4:14 says, 'What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.'""So...the bumper sticker is right," said Grant thoughtfully. "We live for just a short time, and then we die.""But that bumper sticker is missing something, don't you think?" asked Mom.Grant nodded. "When we die, we go to be with Jesus. We have eternal life with Him, even though our bodies die." "Right," said Mom. "For those who trust in Jesus, death is not the end. We will live with Him for ever and ever--and He's going to give us new bodies one day too! We don't have to fear death--or even a short life--because Jesus promises us eternity with Him." Sally A. KerberHow About You?Do you know someone who's lived a really long time? No matter how old they are, their life is like a vanishing mist when compared to eternity. Our lives on earth are short, but that doesn't mean we have to fear death. Jesus was willing to die Himself so we could be saved and have eternal life. “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.” (James 1:22-25 NIV)James calls God's Word a mirror. The mirror helps us evaluate ourselves. Once you look at a mirror, you can decide if you need to make any changes before you leave for the day. The Bible helps us do that, too.One of the areas of our lives that can be a challenge is to maintain a good attitude. You might be thinking, “That's true, but it doesn't really matter. My attitude isn't hurting anyone.”But attitude does matter. It matters a lot. In fact, I've heard people rightly say, “Your attitude determines your altitude.” If you can't keep a good attitude you probably won't go far in life. But the real reason attitude matters is because it matters to God.Can you and I maintain a right spirit, a Christ-like spirit, and a right attitude while journeying through the ups and downs of life?Attitude is a choice. Your spirit and your words are a daily choice. You don't always get to choose the battles. You don't always get to choose the trial, but you always get to choose how you respond.Instead of complaining what can we do? We can determine to be grateful. We can intentionally fill our lives with praise and worship. We can ask God for strength to endure our difficulties. We can determine that no matter what happens, we will honor God with our attitude, our conversation, and our decisions. One thing that helps is to pay attention to our words. Have you ever caught yourself complaining, and you didn't realize you were doing it? If we are going to maintain a right attitude we need to monitor our conversation? One easy way to do this is to ask the people closest to you if and what you have been complaining about recently.Complaining can become a habit. In fact, I've met people who had the gift of complaining. The only problem is this gift doesn't appear in the Bible. Neither is the gift of criticism. One of the most challenging verses in all of the Bible is found in Philippians 2:14 where the Apostle Paul wrote: “Do everything without grumbling or arguing…”Ephesians 4:29 - “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”Remember this truth: With the right attitude you'll influence more people for Christ. All around us are people who are discouraged and beaten down by life. They have plenty of people around them who are reminding them of the negative things all the time. What people need is someone with a godly perspective. We cannot impact our world for Christ, if our attitude is driving people away from us.Today's Challenge: Let's guard our spirit, watch our words, and choose the right attitude. In doing so, we'll honor God, and be a blessing to those around us. COVID-19 has exposed a unique set of challenges for everyone, especially women. Join hosts Elisa and Eryn as they discuss their own personal struggles of being worn down during this global pandemic and share some practical tips on how to reground yourself with God. Notes and Quotes: “This uncertainty is magnifying and pointing out the truth that we truly are not in control of our lives, but He is.” “This time right now has revealed to me how important and precious a quiet time is.” “In the suffering, we can develop endurance and character.” Practical things you can do to ground yourself: journaling; quiet time; a breath prayer; squeeze your hands before Jesus to illustrate your desire for control, and then physically open your hands and lift up your concerns to Him. “When we hold our lives so tightly and love them so hard the way they are, we can end up almost destroying them.” “In this season of uncertainty, I think the [lesson] is to hold things more loosely.” Uncertainty creates anxiety or worry. “Be a ‘we' team with God.” “Be kind to yourself and to each other. Host: Jeff CranstonCo Host: Jen Denton Episode SummaryIt has been said that the only thing consistent in this life is change. With change everywhere around us, we need something that doesn’t move – doesn’t change – something or Someone on whom we can depend. And that someone is God. The doctrine of Immutability simply means that God is unchangeable. Topics We Discussed in this Episode● [4:34] The doctrine of Immutability simply means that God is unchangeable. God is unchanging in who He is, His being, His purposes, His promises, His character – everything about God is unchanging. ● [7:39] The contrast between being and becoming marks the difference between the Creator and the created. ● [8:59] God is unchanging in both His purposes and His promises. ● [11:48] Does God change his mind?● [16:41] To answer the question, “Why is this important in my day-to-day life?”, let’s ask the question, “What would it be like if God could change?”.Resources We Mentioned in the Show· Jeff referred to a quote in the novel, "Baghdad: The Final Gathering", written by Ahmad Ardalan in the show today: “Sometimes in life, a sudden situation, a moment in time, alters your whole life, [and] forever changes the road ahead.”· Jeff mentioned the Dutch theologian Herman Bavinck’s work, The Doctrine of God.Bible Verses We Mentioned in the Show● Psalm 102:25-27, HCSB● Malachi 3:6, NIV● James 1:17, HSCB● Isaiah 46:9-11, NASB● Numbers 23:19, NIV● 1 Samuel 15:29, NIV● Jonah 3:4, 10, NLTJoin the ConversationWe love your feedback! On this Father's Day weekend many are asking themselves, “what gift should I buy my dad?” Rabbi Kevin Solomon takes this opportunity to explore what the Scriptures teach about G-d's love for us (His children), how G-d wants to give us gifts, the kinds of gifts we should ask for, and the joy it brings Him when He provides us with those good gifts. Today I want to talk to you about Good News From The Storm. 1. You don’t have to be afraid of the storm Mark 4:38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” (NIV) Mark 4:39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. (NIV) A. Get us through with his presence Mark 4:36 After they had dismissed the crowd, they took Jesus with them, since He was already in the boat. And there were other boats with Him. (BSB) B. Get us through with this word. Matthew 7:24-27 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practiceis like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (NIV) C. GET US THROUGH WITH HIS POWER Mark 4:40-41 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” (NIV) 2. Jesus is developing your faith through storms. Mark 4:40-41 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” (NIV) James 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, [a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. (NIV) 3. Jesus will get you to the other side of the storm Mark 4:35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” (NIV) Psalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (NIV)

REFLECTION QUOTES “It's not religions that contain hatred, but human hearts.” ~Valley News lead editorial borrowed from the Los Angeles Times (4-30-2019) “An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.” ~Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), lawyer, Indian nationalist leader “…the only way there could ever be reconciliation is going to be a personal revival. A personal revival, where God cleanses the heart and the attitudes and the soul of a person, and in many ways that's why I could learn to forgive.” ~Robert Soto, pastor and Apache tribal leader “We're not defined by that history, but we have to acknowledge it and that people of faith have a leadership role in causing the rest of the nation to believe that we can get to someplace better…. Redemption is still available, but we have to repent, we have to give voice to our failings. Repentance breeds redemption. Collectively, as a Church, we need to do that.” ~Bryan Stevenson on racial relations in the U.S. “Our communion with God lies in his giving himself to us and our giving ourselves and all that he requires to him. This communion with God flows from that union which is in Christ Jesus.” ~John Owen (1616-1683), pastor, theologian and Oxford academic “A humble soul is a Christ-magnifier (Phil. 1:20). He gives the glory of all his actions to Christ and free grace. King Canute took the crown off his own head and set it upon a crucifix. So, a humble saint takes the crown of honour from his own head and sets it upon Christ's.” ~Thomas Watson (c. 1620-1686), English pastor and author “It would be a good contest amongst Christians, one to labor to give no offense and the other to labour to take none.” ~Richard Sibbes (1577-1635), Church of England pastor and theologian “People will forget what you said, they will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” ~Maya Angelou (1828-2014), American poet and civil rights activist “The thing at bottom is this, that men have low thoughts of God, and high thoughts of themselves; and therefore it is that they look upon God as having so little right, and they so much.” ~Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) New England pastor and theologian “God uses broken things. It takes broken soil to produce a crop, broken clouds to give rain, broken grain to give bread, broken bread to give strength. It is the broken alabaster box that gives forth perfume. It is Peter, weeping bitterly, who returns to greater power than ever.” ~Vance Havner (1901-1986), pastor and evangelist SERMON PASSAGE James 4:1-12 (NIV) James 3 (ESV) 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. James 4 (NIV) 1 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. 4 You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. 11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. ALIGN Align my Heart with God’s Heart Ephesians 2:10 (NLT) For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. SURRENDER OUR HEART TO GOD. Psalm 51:10-12 (NIV) Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. NIV James 4:7-10 (The Message) So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. 8 Say a quiet yes to God and he'll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. 9 Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. 10 Get down on your knees before the Master; it's the only way you'll get on your feet. BE TRANSPARENT AND DO INVENTORY. Psalm 139:1-4 (New Living) O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. 2 You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I'm far away. 3 You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. 4 You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. Psalm 139:23-24 (NLT) Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. What are some things that are in my life that shouldn’t be? _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ What are some things that are not in my life that should be? _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ HATE WHAT GOD HATES AND LOVE WHAT GOD LOVES. Proverbs 6:16-19 (NIRV) There are six things the Lord hates. In fact He hates 7 things. 17 The Lord hate proud eyes, a lying tongue and hands that kill those who aren’t guilty. 18 He also hates hearts that make evil plans and feet that are quick to do evil. 19 He hates any witness who pours out lies and anyone who stirs up conflict in the community. John 3:16-17 (NIV) "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” 1 John 4:10-12 (NIV) This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. GOD LOVES PEOPLE AND WE ARE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT HE LOVES.

That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. TANGO Great relationships are like a dance; they move with passion in an interwoven heartbeat. This series of movements provide a lifetime of shared experiences, growth, beauty and style. Great dances require practice, learning the instinctive flow of your partner, encountering conflicting steps and learning recovery. When a couples life is out of sync, breakdowns begin to happen. The repeated impact causes callouses to grow on the heart. To be great at the dance, how do couple’s repair the soul well? In this short 3-week preaching series, the messages are made to inspire, challenge, and encourage you in your relationships whether you are single, dating, or married. BIG IDEA A GREAT RELATIONSHIP IS NOT ABOUT THE ABSENCE OF CONFLICT; IT’S ABOUT THE EMOTIONAL REPAIR AFTER A CONFLICT! JAMES 4:1 NIV [James said] What causes FIGHTS and QUARRELS among you? Don't they come from your DESIRES (GREEK – Hedone) that battle WITHIN YOU? CONTEMPTUOUS FIGHTING COMES FROM THE PURSUIT OF PERSONAL PLEASURE, RATHER THAN CONTENDING FOR RELATIONSHIP CONNECTION. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW WITH A 94% CERTAINTY THAT YOUR RELATIONSHIPS WILL SUCCEED? 4 HORSEMEN OF APOCALYPSE (JOHN GOTTMAN) CONTEMPT CRITICISM DEFENSIVENESS STONEWALLING 80% of DIVORCED men and women said their marriage broke up because they GRADUALLY GREW APART and lost a sense of CLOSENESS, or because they did not FEEL LOVED and APPRECIATED. - Lynn Gigy & Joan Kelly (Divorce Mediation Project) Only 27% of couples said an EXTRAMARITAL AFFAIR was even PARTIALLY TO BLAME. - Lynn Gigy & Joan Kelly (Divorce Mediation Project) Only 40% of the time do couples DIVORCE because they are having FREQUENT, DEVASTATING FIGHTS. - Lynn Gigy & Joan Kelly (Divorce Mediation Project) More often marriages end because, to avoid constant skirmishes, husband and wife distance themselves so much that their friendship and sense of connection are lost. - Lynn Gigy & Joan Kelly (Divorce Mediation Project) MISUNDERSTANDING 90% of the time couples misunderstand one another. … Many see conflict in a relationship as a sign of incompatibility; however, it should be seen as a sign that relationship needs growth to occur. - John Gottman WHY FIGHT? COUPLES FIGHT ABOUT NOTHING. Surprising as this may sound, after studying couples in the Love Lab for over 40 years, this is our conclusion. - John Gottman CONFLICT TYPES RESOLVABLE (31%) & PERPETUAL (69%) Meg wants a baby – Donald doesn’t Joe is lax about house-chores – Susan nags Tony wants kids to be Catholics – Jane wants Baptist Angie thinks Ron is too critical of kids Lacey is shy and struggles with Andy, who is loud Despite their differences these couples remain very satisfied with their marriages because they have hit upon a way to deal with their unbudgeable problem so it doesn't overwhelm them. They've learned to keep it in its place and to have a sense of humor about it. - John Gottman REPAIR WELL Fighting itself is not “bad” Don’t apologize too soon Soften your startup Begin with how you felt Explain your perceptions Turn towards with empathy Take responsibility Apologize Grow for future similar incidents Put the relationship in an ecosystem ACTIVATION OUT OF EVERYTHING WE TALKED ABOUT TODAY, WHAT IS YOUR ONE NEXT STEP THAT YOU NEED TO TAKE? Week 9 – Andy Hazelet – July 30th, 2017 Message Notes: Big Idea: The problems of our day require a different solution. Main Scripture: Zephaniah 2:3; 3:1-4. 3:1 – “What sorrow awaits rebellious, polluted Jerusalem, the city of violence and crime!” (NLT) Big Question: What is the problem of our day? The Problem of the People. 3:2 – “No one can tell it anything; it refuses all correction. It does not trust in the LORD or draw near to its God.” (NLT) Rejection of God's truth: “She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction.” (ASV) Trust in themselves. Ignored the Lord. Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (NIV) James 4:8 – “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (NASB) The Problem of the Leadership. 3:3 – “Its leaders are like roaring lions hunting for their victims. Its judges are like ravenous wolves at evening time, who by dawn have left no trace of their prey. (NLT) Zephaniahs 3:4 – Its prophets are arrogant liars seeking their own gain. Its priests defile the Temple by disobeying God's instructions.” (NLT) They led from a selfish position: They themselves were defiled: They refused to teach the truths of God: “Her priests have profaned the sanctuary. They have done violence to the law.” (NASB) Matthew 23:23-25 says: “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.” (NIV) “Someone has said that a politician is concerned about his party and asks. “Is it popular?” The diplomat is concerned with policy and asks, “Is it safe?” But the statesman is concerned about the good of the nation and asks, “Is it right?” (Wiersbe) What do I want for my children spiritually? How am I modeling that or leading them toward that? The Problem of the Church. 2:3 – “Seek the LORD, all who are humble, and follow his commands. Seek to do what is right and to live humbly. Perhaps even yet the LORD will protect you—protect you from his anger on that day of destruction.” (NLT) Psalm 86:11 – “Teach me your ways, O LORD, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honor you.” (NLT) “Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God, and I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen, such alone will shake the gates of hell and set up the kingdom of God on earth.” (John Wesley) Stop lobbying, start seeking.
