Michellene Davis began her career as a trial litigator and public defender in Newark, where she kept arguing the same point to juries: if her client had had access to healthcare, none of them would be in that courtroom. That insight has shaped a career spanning law, government, and now national health equity. In this episode of Inspiring Women, host Laurie McGraw sits down with Michellene Davis, Esq., President and CEO of National Medical Fellowships (NMF). Founded in 1946, NMF is one of America's oldest diversity organizations and works to close the physician shortage by building a more representative healthcare workforce. ABOUT MICHELLENE DAVIS Michellene describes her career as "chutes and ladders," but the through line is consistent: integrity, systems thinking, and a refusal to set policy through a privileged lens. Her path includes: - Trial litigator and public defender in Newark, New Jersey - Senior policy advisor in the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services - Youngest CEO of the New Jersey State Lottery, a $2.4 billion entity and one of the state's largest revenue producers - First African American and only the second woman to serve as New Jersey State Treasurer, overseeing a multi-billion dollar budget and pension portfolio - First African American to serve as Chief Policy Counsel to the Governor - Co-author of "Changing Missions, Changing Lives" (ForbesBooks, 2020) WHAT NMF DOES Over its history, NMF has awarded more than $50 million to over 35,000 alumni, training not only physicians but physician leaders who reflect the communities they serve. Michellene explains why this is a problem that touches everyone, not just under-resourced communities: a six-month wait to see a specialist is becoming the norm, with roughly one physician for every 1,000 people in LA County and one for every 3,000 in parts of Mississippi and Georgia. She also unpacks the "curb cut effect" and the research showing that diverse clinical teams produce better outcomes for every patient. A PERSONAL CONVERSATION ON CAREGIVING The conversation then turns personal. Michellene opens up about caring for her mother through advanced Alzheimer's for the past 13 years, the disproportionate caregiving burden carried by women leaders, and the friends she has lost to that invisible weight. She closes with the question she believes every high-achieving woman should sit with: when you are lowered into the ground, what do you want to have truly done? A wide-ranging conversation on systems change, health equity, leadership, and legacy. IN THIS EPISODE - The patient the system failed - Why "universal healthcare" kept appearing in her courtroom arguments - The accidental path into government leadership - Becoming the youngest CEO of the NJ State Lottery - First African American and second woman NJ State Treasurer - Holding the purse vs. deciding where to place the coins - Inside NMF and the fight against the physician shortage - The curb cut effect and why representation improves outcomes - 13 years of caregiving and what it taught her about leadership - The caregiving burden on women, and the friends she lost - Her advice on legacy for mid-career women leaders Hosted by Laurie McGraw, where she has the best world women leaders every week and shares their stories and insights!

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women, yet awareness is still surprisingly low. In this episode of The Positive Pause®, host Claire Gill sits down with two of NMF's Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) members, Dr. Emily Lau, a cardiologist specializing in women's cardiovascular health, and Michelle Routhenstein, a preventive cardiology dietitian, to unpack why midlife is a critical window for prevention and what women can do to take control of their heart health. They explore how menopause changes cardiovascular risk, why heart disease often goes unnoticed, and how small, sustainable lifestyle changes can have a major impact.Emily Lau, MD, MPH a women's cardiovascular health specialist and investigator at Mass General Brigham. Dr. Lau co-directs the Women's Heart Health Program. Dr. Lau's laboratory focuses on understanding how biologic sex differences and female-specific cardiovascular risk factors contribute to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease uniquely in women. Michelle Routhenstein, MS, RD, CDCES, CDN, is the owner and president of Entirely Nourished LLC, a specialized private practice in nutrition counseling and consulting focused on the prevention and management of heart disease. Employing a science-based, holistic approach, she is dedicated to enhancing women's heart health by addressing cardiometabolic risk factors and mitigating the likelihood of cardiovascular issues as individuals age.Key Concepts CoveredMidlife is a turning point for heart healthCardiovascular risk accelerates during and after menopause, making this stage of life a critical opportunity for prevention.Heart disease is often silent and under-recognizedMany women don't realize there's an issue because symptoms aren't obvious. At the same time, awareness has actually declined in recent years, which makes education even more important.Health goes beyond weight and appearanceYou can look healthy and still have underlying cardiovascular risk. That's why personalized testing and understanding your numbers matters.Sustainable habits matter more than extreme changesInstead of restrictive diets or drastic routines, small consistent improvements in nutrition, movement, sleep, and stress management lead to better long-term outcomes.Prevention is the real opportunityMidlife isn't just a time of change; it's a chance to take control. With the right approach, most cardiovascular risk factors can be improved or prevented. This conversation makes one thing clear: heart health isn't something women can afford to ignore, especially at midlife. The good news is that most risk factors are preventable and manageable with the right information and consistent action. By focusing on sustainable habits and understanding your personal risk, you can take control of your cardiovascular health and build a stronger future.Connect with Dr. Lau:Website: Mass General Brigham Women's Heart HealthLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/emily-lau-11601152/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/massgeneral Connect with Michelle:Website: https://www.entirelynourished.comLinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/michellerouthenstein/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heart.Health.Nutritionist/

The email was pages long, all about the problems in her marriage. Each line was about how her husband had ruined the marriage. She pointed out actions of her husband, and he did make mistakes (no abuse, mind you). She wanted to know what to do -- how to save her marriage -- given the fact that it wasn't her fault. She was clear that she wanted the marriage, but she just didn't know what to do, after all he had done to damage the relationship. NMF She was skidding down the fastest path to failing in her efforts. And she didn't see how she had anything to do with it. NMF When we talked on the phone, I asked a little bit more about the dynamics of the relationship. But I noticed she kept shifting back to "he did...," "he didn't...." She could point out his failures and shortcomings. And then she would return to her question: Given his actions, how could she save her marriage? NMF I had no doubt that she really wanted to save her marriage. And I had little doubt that she would be unsuccessful. Because she had fallen in the NMF trap. Figured it out yet? The NMF trap is "Not My Fault." Here is the problem with "Not My Fault": It leaves you stuck. It does relieve you of blame or fault. But it also tends to rob people of responsibility (Response-Ability). Let's talk about why this trap happens and how to avoid it. Listen below. In this episode, Ingrid Harm-Ernandes, PT, WCS, a seasoned physical therapist, author, and speaker with over 40 years of experience, including almost three decades specializing in women's health, joins us for a discussion into the often overlooked but crucial topic of pelvic health, its critical role in everyday functions like bowel and bladder control, sexual health, & maintaining stability, and treatment options and resources available including NMF's free Menopause MicroCourse on genitourinary symptoms of menopause (GSM). As women enter menopause, the pelvic floor faces additional challenges, including incontinence, prolapse, and pain during sex (aka sex dysfunction). Ingrid noted that these issues are commonly misunderstood or dismissed as inevitable and as a result are not addressed. In actuality, these issues are quite treatable and should be addressed as soon as they are noted. She stressed the importance of recognizing symptoms early and seeking help from qualified, credentialed professionals (e.g., physical therapists, urogynecologists, and certified menopause practitioners / CMPs). Many of these conditions, though common, are manageable with the right care. One of the most misunderstood pelvic health issues is prolapse, where organs like the bladder or uterus shift from their normal position. Ingrid explained how prolapse often starts subtly, with symptoms like pressure or discomfort, but can progress over time without intervention. Fortunately, prolapse is treatable with both non-surgical and surgical options.Ingrid emphasized the importance of follow-through, whether it's attending physical therapy after surgery or making small changes to daily habits. Being aware of changes and understanding how to navigate health issues is an important part of continued self-care. She shared simple but effective strategies to promote pelvic health:Strengthen the Pelvic FloorStay ActiveHydrate and Eat WellSeek Professional HelpAsk QuestionsIngrid is a member of NMF's Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) and was co-faculty for the NMF's Menopause MicroCourse on genitourinary symptoms of menopause (GSM). Her book, The Musculoskeletal Mystery: How to Solve Your Pelvic Floor Symptoms, provides a deeper exploration of these topics. She has served on committees for both the American Physical Therapy Association's (APTA) Specialization Academy of Content Experts (SACE) committee and the American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS), including serving as the Chair and Vice Chair for the Advanced Practice, Physical Therapy and Allied Health (APPTAH) Special Interest Groups (SIG) and the AUGS Advanced Practice Provider (APP) conference committee.Connect with Ingrid:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ingrid-harm-ernandes-5057773b/Instagram: @harmernandesFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ingrid.harmernandes.71/Resources referenced in the podcast: The Musculoskeletal Mystery: How to solve your pelvic floor symptoms -- available on DesertHarvest.com and Amazon.comThe National Menopause Foundation's Menopause MicroCourses

The approaching end of the spring semester at the University of Oklahoma signals the coming of an annual tradition in the college town, Norman Music Festival. Over the years, NMF has become the state's premier music festival for independent and up-and-coming bands, with several big national names sprinkled across its history of lineups. It is also the biggest in-state platform for many talented Oklahoma-based musicians. This year's festival is once again free for all, running from April 25-27, and features headliners like Alvvays, Moor Mother, Husbands, and more. To help set the stage for the event, the Oklahoma Today Podcast welcomes guests Shari Jackson, Desiree Yearby, and Evan Jarvicks to talk the names they're excited to see, the work that goes into putting on such a big annual event, and tips for newcomers. Also on the show, the editors discuss a hit Question of the Week prompt: What Oklahoma small town could also be a good band name? And podvents take us out to where the red fern grows. We hope you enjoy!

In this episode, we delve into a profound conversation with Claire Gill, the founder of the National Menopause Foundation (NMF), as we explore the often-overlooked connection between menopause and divorce. Over and over again, in conversations, webinars, and group meetings with the NMF, women often reference feeling convinced that they were going to get a divorce during the journey to menopause.Join us as we shed light on the complexities, challenges, and emotions that can intertwine these life events. Our culture's lack of awareness and understanding of the physical and emotional symptoms of perimenopause can impact relationships and even influence major life decisions. Being informed and aware of symptoms can help discern whether issues are related to menopause or truly reflective of challenges in a relationship. Don't miss this essential conversation on a topic affecting all women. Need help from Claire?
