Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Increasing IQ by 10 Points is Possible, published by George3d6 on March 19, 2024 on LessWrong. A while ago I wrote how I managed to add 13 points to my IQ (as measured by the mean between 4 different tests). I had 3 "self-experimenters" follow my instructions in San Francisco. One of them dropped off, since, surprise surprise, the intervention is hard. The other two had an increase of 11 and 10 points in IQ respectively (using the "fluid" components of each test) and an increase of 9 and 7 respectively if we include verbal IQ. A total of 7 people acted as a control and were given advantages on the test compared to the intervention group to exacerbate the effects of memory and motivation, only 1 scored on par with the intervention group. We get a very good p-value, considering the small n, both when comparing the % change in control vs intervention (0.04) and the before/after intervention values (0.006) Working Hypothesis My working hypothesis for this was simple: If I can increase blood flow to the brain in a safe way (e.g. via specific exercises, specific supplements, and photostimulation in the NUV and NIR range) And I can make people think "out of the box" (e.g. via specific games, specific "supplements", specific meditations) And prod people to think about how they can improve in whatever areas they want (e.g. via journaling, talking, and meditating) Then you get this amazing cocktail of spare cognitive capacity suddenly getting used. As per the last article, I can't exactly have a step-by-step guide for how to do this, given that a lot of this is quite specific. I was rather lucky that 2 of my subjects were very athletic and "got it" quite fast in terms of the exercises they had to be doing. The Rub At this point, I'm confident all the "common sense" distillation on what people were experimenting with has been done, and the intervention takes quite a while. Dedicating 4 hours a day to something for 2 weeks is one thing, but given that we're engaging in a form of training for the mind, the participants need not only be present, but actively engaged. A core component of my approach is the idea that people can (often non-conceptually) reason through their shortcomings if given enough spare capacity, and reach a more holistic form of thinking. I'm hardly the first to propose or observe this, though I do want to think my approach is more well-proven, entirely secular, and faster. Still, the main bottleneck remains convincing people to spend the time on it. What's next My goal when I started thinking about this was to prove to myself that the brain and the mind are more malleable than we think, that relatively silly and easy things, to the tune of: A few supplements and 3-4 hours of effort a day for 2 weeks, can change things that degrade with aging and are taken as impossible to reverse Over the last two months, I became quite convinced there is something here… I don't quite understand its shape yet, but I want to pursue it. At present, I am considering putting together a team of specialists (which is to say neuroscientists and "bodyworkers"), refining this intervention with them, and selling it to people as a 2-week retreat. But there's also a bunch of cool hardware that's coming out of doing this As well as a much better understanding of the way some drugs and supplements work… and understanding I could package together with the insanely long test-and-iterate decision tree to use these substances optimally (more on this soon). There was some discussion and interested expressed by the Lighthaven team in the previous comment section to replicate, and now that I have data from more people I hope that follows through, I'd be high-quality data from a trustworthy first party, and I'm well aware at this point this should still hit the "quack" meter for most people. The AstroSat UV Deep Field North: the far and near ultraviolet photometric catalog by Chayan Mondal et al. on Wednesday 30 November We present deep UV imaging observations of the Great Observatories Origins Survey Northern (GOODS-N) field with AstroSat/UVIT (AstroSat UV Deep Field north - AUDFn), using one far-UV (F154W, 34.0 kilosec) and two near-UV filters (N242W, 19.2 kilosec; N245M, 15.5 kilosec). The nature of the UV sky background was explored across the UVIT field and a global mean and rms was estimated for each filter. We reach 3$sigma$ detection limits of $m_{rm AB}$ $sim$ 27.35 mag, 27.28 mag and 27.02 mag for a point source in the F154W, N242W and N245M bands respectively. The 50% completeness limits of the FUV and NUV images are $m_{rm AB}=$ 26.40 mag and 27.05 mag respectively. We constructed PSFs for each band and estimated their FWHM, which were found to be almost the same: 1.18" in F154W, 1.11" in N242W, and 1.24" in N245M. We used SExtractor to separately identify sources in the FUV and NUV filters and produce the UV source catalog of the entire AUDFn field. The source count slope estimated in FUV and NUV is 0.57 dex mag$^{-1}$ (between 19 - 25 mag) and 0.44 dex mag$^{-1}$ (between 18 - 25 mag), respectively. The catalog contains 6839 and 16171 sources (brighter than the 50% completeness limit) in the FUV and NUV, respectively. Our FUV and NUV flux measurements of the identified sources complement existing multi-band data in the GOODS-N field, and enable us to probe rest-frame FUV properties of galaxies at redshift $z < 1$ and search for candidate Lyman continuum leakers at redshift $z > 0.97$. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.16923v1

The Complex Structure of the Bulge of M31 by Denis Leahy et al. on Wednesday 30 November The bulge of M31 is of interest in the context of the nature of galactic bulges and how their structure relates to bulge formation mechanisms and their subsequent evolution. With the UVIT instrument on AstroSat, we have observed the bulge of M31 in five far ultraviolet (FUV) and near ultraviolet (NUV) filters at 1" spatial resolution. Models for the luminosity distribution of the bulge are constructed using the UVIT data and the galaxy image-fitting algorithm GALFIT. We fit the bulge without nuclear region with a Sersic function the five images and find Sersic indices ($simeq2.1$ to 2.5) similar to previous studies but smaller $R_e$ values ($simeq0.5$ to 0.6 kpc). When the images include the nuclear region, a multicomponent model is used to find the best-fit. We use an 8-component fit for the FUV 148nm image, which has the highest sensitivity. The other images (169 to 279 nm) are fit with 4-component models. The dust lanes in the bulge region are recovered in the residual image after subtraction of the bright bulge light using the multicomponent model. The dust lanes show that M31's nuclear spiral is visible in absorption at NUV and FUV wavelengths. The bulge images show boxy contours in all five UVIT wavebands, which is confirmed by fitting using GALFIT. The Sersic indices of $sim$2.1-2.5 are intermediate between expected values for a classical bulge and for a pseudobulge. The boxiness of the bulge provides further evidence that M31's bulge has contributions from a classical bulge and a pseudobulge. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.16311v1

A Panchromatic Study of Massive Stars in the Extremely Metal-Poor Local Group Dwarf Galaxy Leo A by Maude Gull et al. on Tuesday 29 November We characterize massive stars (M>8 M_sun) in the nearby (D~0.8 Mpc) extremely metal-poor (Z~5% Z_sun) galaxy Leo A using Hubble Space Telescope ultra-violet (UV), optical, and near-infrared (NIR) imaging along with Keck/LRIS and MMT/Binospec optical spectroscopy for 18 main sequence OB stars. We find that: (a) 12 of our 18 stars show emission lines, despite not being associated with an H II region, suggestive of stellar activity (e.g., mass loss, accretion, binary star interaction), which is consistent with previous predictions of enhanced activity at low metallicity; (b) 6 are Be stars, which are the first to be spectroscopically studied at such low metallicity -- these Be stars have unusual panchromatic SEDs; (c) for stars well-fit by the TLUSTY non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) models, the photometric and spectroscopic values of T_eff and log(g) agree to within ~0.01 dex and ~0.18 dex, respectively, indicating that NUV/optical/NIR imaging can be used to reliably characterize massive (M ~ 8-30 M_sun) main sequence star properties relative to optical spectroscopy; (d) the properties of the most massive stars in H II regions are consistent with constraints from previous nebular emission line studies; and (e) 13 stars with M>8 M_sun are >40 pc from a known star cluster or H II region. Our sample comprises ~50% of all known massive stars at Z < 10% Z_sun with derived stellar parameters, high-quality optical spectra, and panchromatic photometry. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.14349v1

Timescale-dependent X-ray to UV time lags of NGC 4593 using high-intensity XMM-Newton observations with Swift and AstroSat by Max W. J. Beard et al. on Monday 21 November We present a 140ks observation of NGC 4593 with XMM-Newton providing simultaneous and continuous PN X-ray and OM UV (UVW1 2910AA) lightcurves which sample short-timescale variations better than previous observations. These observations were simultaneous with 22d of Swift X-ray and UV/optical monitoring, reported previously, and 4d of AstroSat X-ray (SXT), far (FUV 1541AA), and near (NUV 2632AA) UV allowing lag measurements between them and the highly-sampled XMM. From the XMM we find that UVW1 lags behind the X-rays by 29.5$pm$1.3ks, $sim$half the lag previously determined from the Swift monitoring. Re-examination of the textit{Swift} data reveals a bimodal lag distribution, with evidence for both the long and short lags. However if we detrend the Swift lightcurves by LOWESS filtering with a 5d width, only the shorter lag (23.8$pm$21.2ks) remains. The NUV observations, compared to PN and SXT, confirm the $sim$30ks lag found by XMM and, after 4d filtering is applied to remove the long-timescale component, the FUV shows a lag of $sim$23ks. The resultant new UVW1, FUV, and NUV lag spectrum extends to the X-ray band without requiring additional X-ray to UV lag offset, which if the UV arises from reprocessing of X-rays, implies direct illumination of the reprocessor. By referencing previous Swift and HST lag measurements, we obtain an X-ray to optical lag spectrum which agrees with a model using the KYNreverb disc-reprocessing code, assuming the accepted mass of $7.63times10^{6}M_{odot}$ and a spin approaching maximum. Previously noted lag contribution from the BLR in the Balmer and Paschen continua are still prominent. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.10229v1

Deep Investigation of Neutral Gas Origins DINGO : HI stacking experiments with early science data by Jonghwan Rhee et al. on Tuesday 18 October We present early science results from Deep Investigation of Neutral Gas Origins (DINGO), an HI survey using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Using ASKAP sub-arrays available during its commissioning phase, DINGO early science data were taken over $sim$ 60 deg$^{2}$ of the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) 23 h region with 35.5 hr integration time. We make direct detections of six known and one new sources at $z < 0.01$. Using HI spectral stacking, we investigate the HI gas content of galaxies at $0.04 < z< 0.09$ for different galaxy colours. The results show that galaxy morphology based on optical colour is strongly linked to HI gas properties. To examine environmental impacts on the HI gas content of galaxies, three sub-samples are made based on the GAMA group catalogue. The average HI mass of group central galaxies is larger than those of satellite and isolated galaxies, but with a lower HI gas fraction. We derive a variety of HI scaling relations for physical properties of our sample, including stellar mass, stellar mass surface density, $NUV-r$ colour, specific star formation rate, and halo mass. We find that the derived HI scaling relations are comparable to other published results, with consistent trends also observed to $sim$0.5 dex lower limits in stellar mass and stellar surface density. The cosmic HI densities derived from our data are consistent with other published values at similar redshifts. DINGO early science highlights the power of HI spectral stacking techniques with ASKAP. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.09697v1

Aging of galaxies along the morphological sequence, marked by bulge growth and disk quenching by Louis Quilley et al. on Tuesday 18 October We revisit the color bimodality of galaxies using the extensive EFIGI morphological classification of nearby galaxies. The galaxy SDSS images in the g, r and i bands are decomposed as bulge+disk using SourceXtractor++. The spectral energy distributions made of our gri photometry complemented with GALEX NUV are fitted with ZPEG in order to estimate the stellar masses and specific star formations rates (sSFR) of whole galaxies as well as their bulge and disk components. The absolute NUV-r color versus stellar mass diagram shows a continuous relationship between the present sSFR of galaxies and their stellar mass, that spans all morphological types of the Hubble sequence. Irregular galaxies to Sab spirals make up the Blue Cloud, the Green Plain (formerly Valley) is made up of early-type spirals (S0a-Sa) while the Red Sequence contains all lenticular and elliptical galaxies, with systematically higher masses for the ellipticals. Galaxies across the Green Plain undergo a marked growth by a factor 2 to 3 in their bulge-to-total mass ratio and a systematic profile change from pseudo to classical bulges, as well as a significant reddening interpreted as star formation fading in their disks. Therefore, the Green Plain is a transition region, and we exclude a predominantly quick transit due to rapid quenching. We suggest that tracers of increased star formation (bright HII regions, spiral arms, flocculence) determine the limited scatter of the Main Sequence of star-forming galaxies. The high frequency of bars for all spirals as well as the stronger spiral arms and flocculence in the knee of the Green Plain suggest that internal dynamics, likely triggered by flybys or mergers, may be the key to the bulge growth of massive disk galaxies, marker of the aging of galaxies from star forming to quiescence. The Hubble sequence can then be considered as an inverse sequence of galaxy physical evolution. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2206.04707v2

Discovery of a probable very fast extragalactic nova in a symbiotic binary

Discovery of a probable very fast extragalactic nova in a symbiotic binary by David Modiano et al. on Wednesday 12 October Very fast novae are novae which evolve exceptionally quickly (on timescales of only days). Due to their rapid evolution, very fast novae are challenging to detect and study, especially at early times. Here we report the discovery, which was made as part of our Transient UV Objects project, of a probable very fast nova in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 300. We detected the rise to the peak (which is rarely observed for very fast novae) in the near-ultraviolet (NUV), with the first detection just ~2 hours after the eruption started. The peak and early stages of the decay were also observed in UV and optical bands. The source rapidly decayed by 2 NUV magnitudes within 3.5 days, making it one of the fastest novae known. In addition, a likely quiescent counterpart was found in archival near-infrared Spitzer and VIRCAM images but not in any deep optical and UV observations, indicating a very red spectral shape in quiescence. The outburst and quiescence properties suggest that the system is likely a symbiotic binary. We discuss this new transient in the context of very fast novae in general and specifically as a promising supernova Type Ia progenitor candidate, due to its very high inferred WD mass (~1.35 Ms; determined by comparing this source to other very fast novae). arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.06057v1

PROBES-I: A Compendium of Deep Rotation Curves and Matched multiband Photometry by Connor Stone et al. on Wednesday 21 September We present the Photometry and Rotation Curve Observations from Extragalactic Surveys (PROBES) compendium of extended rotation curves for 3163 late-type spirals, with matching homogeneous multiband photometry for 1677 of them. PROBES rotation curves originally extracted from Halpha long-slit spectra and aperture synthesis HI (21cm) velocity maps typically extend out to a median 2R_e (or 1R_{23.5, r}). Our uniform photometry takes advantage of GALEX, DESI-LIS, and WISE images and the software AutoProf to yield multiband azimuthally averaged surface brightness profiles that achieve depths greater than 25 mag/arcsec^2 (FUV, NUV), 27 mag/arcsec^2 (g, r), and 26 mag/arcsec^2 (z, W1, W2). With its library of spatially resolved profiles and an extensive table of structural parameters, the versatile PROBES data set will benefit studies of galaxy structure and formation. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.09912v1

UVIT FUV and NUV photometry is carried out here for a set of 239 clusters in the NE disk and bulge of M31 which overlap with the HST/PHAT survey. Padova stellar models were applied to derive ages, masses, metallicities and extinctions for 170 clusters. The ages show a narrow peak at $sim$4 Myr and a broad peak around 100 Myr. log(Z/Z$_{odot}$) values are mostly between $-0.3$ and $+0.3$. The 7 clusters in the bulge are low metallicity and high mass. Most clusters are in the spiral arms and have metallicities in the range noted above. The youngest clusters are mostly high metallicity and are concentrated along the brightest parts of the spiral arms. The UVIT FUV and NUV data are sensitive to young stars and detect a new metal rich peak in star formation in the disk at age $sim4$ Myr. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.03842v2

SFR estimations from z=0 to z=0 9 -- A comparison of SFR calibrators for star-forming galaxies by M. Figueira et al. on Monday 12 September Using VIPERS, we estimated a set of SFR based on photometric and spectroscopic data. We used, as estimators, photometric bands from ultraviolet to mid-infrared, and spectral lines. Assuming a reference SFR obtained from the spectral energy distribution reconstructed with Code Investigating GALaxy Emission, we estimated the reliability of each band as an SFR tracer. We used GSWLC to trace the dependence of these SFR calibrators with redshift. The far and near UV, u-band and 24-$mu$m bands, as well as $L_{TIR}$, are found to be good SFR tracers up to $zsim0.9$ with a strong dependence on the attenuation prescription used for the bluest bands (scatter of SFR of 0.26, 0.14, 0.15, 0.23, and 0.24dex for VIPERS, and 0.25, 0.24, 0.09, 0.12, and 0.12dex for GSWLC). The 8-$mu$m band provides only a rough estimate of the SFR as it depends on metallicity and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon properties (scatter of 0.23dex for VIPERS). We estimated the scatter of rest-frame luminosity estimations from CIGALE to be 0.26, 0.14, 0.12, 0.15, and 0.20dex for FUV, NUV, ugriz, K$_{mathrm{s}}$, and 8-24$mu$m-$L_{mathrm{TIR}}$). At intermediate redshift, the H$beta$ line is a reliable SFR tracer (scatter of 0.19dex) and the [OII] line gives an equally good estimation when the metallicity from the $R_{23}$ parameter is taken into account (0.17 for VIPERS and 0.20dex for GSWLC). A calibration based on [OIII] retrieves the SFR only when additional information such as the metallicity or the ionization parameter of galaxies are used (0.26 for VIPERS and 0.20dex for GSWLC), diminishing its usability as a direct SFR tracer. Based on rest-frame luminosities estimated with CIGALE, we propose our own set of calibrations from FUV, NUV, u-band, 8, 24$mu$m, $L_{TIR}$, H$beta$, [OII], and [OIII]. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.04390v1

SDSS J1058+5443: A blue quasar does not have optical NUV broad emission lines by Xue-Guang Zhang et al. on Tuesday 06 September In the manuscript, the blue quasar SDSS J105816.19+544310.2 (=SDSS J1058+5443) at redshift 0.479 is reported as so-far the best candidate of true type-2 quasar with disappearance of central BLRs. There are so-far no definite conclusions on the very existence of true type-2 AGN, mainly due to detected optical broad emission lines in high quality spectra of some previously classified candidates of true type-2 AGN. Here, not similar as previous reported candidates for true type-2 AGN among narrow emission-line galaxies with weak AGN activities but strong stellar lights, the definite blue quasar SDSS J1058+5443 can be well confirmed as a true type-2 quasar due to apparent quasar-shape blue continuum emissions but apparent loss of both the optical broad Balmer emission lines and the NUV broad Mg~{sc ii} emission line. Based on different model functions and F-test statistical technique, after considering blue-shifted optical and UV Fe~{sc ii} emissions, there are no apparent broad optical Balmer emission lines and/or broad NUV Mg~{sc ii} line, and the confidence level is smaller than 1sigma to support broad optical and NUV emission lines. Moreover, assumed the Virialization assumption to broad line emission clouds, the re-constructed broad emission lines strongly indicate that the probable intrinsic broad emission lines, if there were, cannot be hidden or overwhelmed in the noises of SDSS spectrum of SDSS J1058+5443. Therefore, SDSS J1058+5443, so-far the best and robust candidate of true type-2 quasar, leads to the further clear conclusion on the very existence of true type-2 AGN. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.02164v1

Against such there is no law. The disciples had joy (Luke 10:17-20 NKJV) Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” (18) And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. (19) Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. (20) Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:21 NKJV) In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. (Psalm 100:2 NKJV) Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. (Psalm 118:24 NKJV) This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 126:5-6 NKJV) Those who sow in tears Shall reap in joy. (6) He who continually goes forth weeping, Bearing seed for sowing, Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, Bringing his sheaves with him.

Galaxies have been found to divide into two families: one dominated by late-type, star forming, blue objects, which are rich in cold gas and have a low stellar mass surface density (mu*); the other is made of early-type, red and passive galaxies with higher mu* and on average low gas content. The physical mechanisms responsible for the galaxy transition between the active and passive regime are still debated. In the high mass range, mechanisms proposed to quench the star formation (SF) through cold gas heating or depletion are not efficient enough to reproduce the correct red sequence of passive systems, when implemented in models of galaxy evolution. Input for a better understanding of the physics of quenching mechanisms, and of their relative importance and efficiency, can come from a comparison of the cold atomic neutral hydrogen (HI) content and SF for a statistically significant sample of massive systems where quenching is at work. However, existing surveys do not sample this high mass, gas poor regime well enough. In this work, we study the HI properties of a volume-limited sample of ~5000 nearby galaxies with stellar mass M*>10^10 Msun, selected from the state-of-the-art blind HI survey ALFALFA to have optical and ultraviolet data so that star formation and galaxy properties can be derived. As ALFALFA does not sample with sufficient sensitivity the high mass, gas poorest range, we developed a software tool to co-add its data, in order to obtain average gas properties of galaxy classes which individually may be largely undetected. Using this technique, we study three types of quenching processes, namely the presence of a bulge component, feedback from an active galactic nucleus (AGN), and environmental mechanisms acting on the interstellar medium. Simulations of early-type galaxies with non star-forming HI disks have suggested that the presence of a bulge can stabilize the gas, thus preventing star formation, but on average we do not observe this. We find that, once mu* and NUV-r colours are fixed, the HI gas fraction in massive bulge- and disk-dominated galaxies is the same. A similar negative result is obtained if we compare M_HI/M* of AGN hosts and control galaxies, despite simulations that invoke feedback from AGN to heat or deplete cold gas in massive systems. The relation we observe between the cold gas content and the accretion rate in the red population actually points towards a co-evolution of SF and AGN activity, both driven by the amount of gas available. The last class of quenching mechanisms studied in this work includes environmental processes, which are known to affect the SF properties of galaxies and, at least in rich clusters, their cold gas content. For the first time, though, we study the effect of the environment on the HI content as a continuous function of local density, comparing it with global and inner specific star formation rate. The gradual increase in the suppression of SF from the inner to the outer regions that we observe, and the even stronger HI deficiency as a function of increasing local density, can be explained by a mechanism acting on the disk from the outside-in, like ram-pressure stripping of the HI. A comparison with mock catalogs from models, which include only removal of the hot gas, shows how models underestimate environmental effects, especially on the cold gas component of galaxies. We therefore suggest that, in order to improve our understanding of the galaxy bimodality in the local Universe, observations and models should particularly focus on environmental mechanisms acting on the cold interstellar medium. These processes are efficient over a broader range of local densities than previously thought, and could solve parts of the puzzle in the formation of massive and passive systems.
