Warriors, Police, Veterans Helping Each Other: A Special Episode. In the realm of law enforcement, the term "warriors" extends beyond the battlefield and into the heart of communities. Law enforcement officers, akin to warriors on the front lines, confront the harsh realities of their profession daily. The weight of responsibility, coupled with the unpredictability of the job, can leave lasting scars. Chris understands this all too well, having witnessed the toll it takes on his fellow officers. Yet, in the face of adversity, he found a calling—to give back and assist others who share the burden of maintaining law and order. Chris Thorp, a retired law enforcement officer from the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department, knows the significance of being a warrior in the service of justice. He recounts his hardest day as a Sheriff's Deputy, a day etched with challenges that tested not only his physical prowess but also his mental resilience. Chris's commitment to supporting his comrades led him to embrace Operation Enduring Warrior - Task Force Sentinel. This organization stands as a beacon of hope for military veterans, first responders, and law enforcement officers grappling with the aftermath of their service. It is a testament to the spirit of warriors helping each other, transcending the boundaries between professions. In a world where the line between heroes and civilians blurs, the call to join hands becomes more resounding. Veterans, police officers, firefighters, and EMTs, united by a common purpose, rally together. They recognize that the challenges extend beyond the physical realm, acknowledging the silent battles fought within—the struggles against PTSD and the trauma that lingers long after the sirens fade. The camaraderie among these warriors is a force that binds them together. They understand that on the hardest days, it's the collective strength that sees them through. Physical injuries may heal with time, but the scars of the mind demand a different kind of healing—one that comes from mutual support and understanding. Chris Thorp's journey exemplifies the essence of warriors coming together, not only to share their stories but to actively help each other. Operation Enduring Warrior is a conduit for this collective effort, channeling the resilience of those who've faced the hardest days into programs that address both the visible and invisible wounds. In law enforcement, veterans, and emergency responders, the threads of support form a resilient bond. It's a testament to the idea that in joining forces, these warriors can make a difference not just in their own lives but in the lives of those who continue to stand on the front lines. The call to action echoes loudly—to join, to help, and to ensure that no warrior faces their hardest days alone. Operation Enduring Warrior (OEW) is a veteran-founded non‐profit 501(c)(3) whose mission is to honor, empower, and motivate our nation's wounded military and law enforcement veterans through physical, mental and emotional rehabilitation. Our programs help participants overcome adversity and hardship through innovation, teamwork, and perseverance. This ultimately enables the lives of our wounded military and public service veterans to go in directions they may have once thought were impossible. OEW is a 100% volunteer-run organization. Seann Ritzman is a New Jersey native. Raised by a single mother, Seann's grandfather was the father figure in his life. Seann was taught to take pride in his country; his grandfather having served in Korea in the Army Corps. of Engineers. At seventeen, Seann joined a delayed entry program into the "Marine Corps. Chaffeur Crew," aka the Navy. Seann's boot camp was the summer after he graduated high school. He remembers boot camp as eye opening, the air thick with the moisture of sweat. Seann's four year enlistment was spent at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Seann elected not to re-enlist, and spent the next several years trying to find a purpose and direction for his life including: working for an alarm company, Hot Topic, ADP, and finally ending up at Cissco. For the past eight years Seann has been instrumental in working with veterans through the Veteran Focus Resource Organization at Cisco. Seann has devoted a great deal of his time, passion, and energy to Operation Enduring Warrior, an organization whose mission is to honor, empower, and motivate our wounded warriors. OEW is probably best known for their spartan races. OEW takes the broken and makes them whole. Honorees run races, accompanied by handlers wearing gas masks. Honorees receive the praise; handlers are blank slates. Seann credits OEW for helping him find the right people to bring him out of a very frustrating and dark time. There are many adversities we face in life. Some of outward-facing while many are scars we carry on the insides of our hearts. Today's guest can speak to both. Jonathan Lopez is an Army Infantry veteran + member of Operation Enduring Warrior (OEW). OEW is a veteran-founded non‐profit whose mission is to honor, empower, and motivate our nation’s wounded military and law enforcement veterans through physical, mental and emotional rehabilitation. Jonathan joins us for a raw, emotional and honest conversation about serving our country, learning how to accept unexpected circumstances + challenges in life and inspiring others to do the same. (Thank you to Live Inspired community member Martina for sharing her special relationship Jonathan, his connection her late son Thomas + the work OEW is doing in our communities. Share your guest recommendations with us at podcast@johnolearyinspires.com) SHOW NOTES: According to the 2019 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report, more than 16 United States veterans die by suicide every day. At 17 years old, Jonathan joined the Army seeking brotherhood + community, something that was lacking in his life. During Special Forces Training, Jonathan realized the community he always sought was already in the barracks + quit. Days later, Jonathan was involved with a head-on motorcycle accident that resulted in 17 fractures in his left leg, broke every rib on his left side + the amputation of his left arm. Finding peace: "Not too long ago, I let go. It was one of the most liberating things." Jonathan's focus + determination on rehabilitating his leg helped him cope with the loss of his arm. Unleashing a monster: While rehabilitating his leg, Jonathan became addicted to opioids, which eventually led to a suicide attempt. "Figuring out how to do things with one hand is not that complicated. Mental rehabilitation is hard." Redemption: During induction to Operation Enduring Warrior's Masked Athlete Team, Jonathan's mentor Jeff Farmer presented an opportunity for redemption. "Face your obstacles, smile + get it over with." Jonathan attempted suicide not wanting his children to grow up with a "deadbeat father". Today, he's choosing to live because of his kids. Learn more about Operation Enduring Warrior here. If you or someone you know needs help, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? My grandmother. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? My grandmother taught me to plant a tree, write a book and have children. My friend Scott encourages me to leave my footprints to guide others. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Nothing. It would change where I am today. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? The Bataan Memorial Death March is, as they say more than just a marathon… it ‘honors the thousands of heroic service members who defended the Philippine Islands during World War II, sacrificing their freedom, health, and, in many cases, their very lives.’ Joe, Colonel Nye, Sefra Alexandra, Erica Walker, Marion Abrams and Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Frank Grippe embarked on a sojourn to honor the men that exhibited true grit to their bone marrow. The 26.2 mile ruck through the White Sands Missile Range brought with it sweat, crippling dehydration, pain so excruciating it caused dry retching… yet in comparison to what these veterans had been through (as told by Death March Survivor Dan Crowley on Spartan UP! Podcast Episode 229) this was just a walk in the park. Walking alongside OEW, thousands of men women and children- our frame of reference was once again shifted. What the body can endure is extraordinary and the experience of rucking through the gorgeous yucca-clad landscape with beans on head, smiles on face and laughter in the belly- once again proved that friendships are only made stronger when you get comfortable being uncomfortable. Lessons: · Colonel Nye dehydrates faster than a camel drinking saltwater · Joe needs a backpack sponsor · Erica Walker needed a walker at the airport · Marion secretly ran more than all of us with more weight · Frank Grippe needs to buy a scale · Sefra should get sponsored by Goya · The men that survived and died in this march should never be forgotten

The team members who don the mask are members of the Masked Athlete Team (MAT). These members have gone through a rigorous selection process known as Warrior INDOC. This in-depth process is composed of several phases of personal, professional and physical analysis, fundraising abilities, and teamwork assessment. The final phase is a 48-hour physical and mental endurance component during which candidates complete a series of challenges under the close supervision of selected team members. Candidates who successfully complete this stage may then be invited to join the ranks of the Team. Completion rate from start to finish is often times less than 20%. We also rely heavily on our OEW Community Ambassadors (OCAs). These are selfless men and women who have chosen to take up the banner of our cause to honor, empower and motivate wounded veterans. They accomplish this by fundraising on behalf of the team, arranging social events, and participating in a wide variety of athletic events in our branded gear (gas masks not allowed). Often these athletes will run alongside the MAT at events. The OCA members are invaluable to the success of our mission. Become an OEW Community Ambassador (OCA) Our Community Ambassadors (OCAs) are volunteer supporters who wish to assist in raising awareness and donations for OEW through spreading the word, participating in local community events wearing OEW branded gear, and promoting our cause through social media outlets. The OCA program was established to give everyone across the country the opportunity to personally support our nation’s wounded service members and their families. While only our Masked Athlete Team assist our wounded veterans at athletic events, all of our OCAs can assist in the community! Whether you are participating in your first event, or are a seasoned athlete, or are acting as a volunteer in one of many ways, your efforts can make a difference in the quality of life for our wounded service members! Check our Facebook page for updates and events where the OEW Team calls all existing and aspiring Community Ambassadors to join us in our mission to, “Honor, Empower and Motivate” our nation’s wounded service members. About Jonathan Lopez Previous to 2000, Jonathan was a highly-motivated infantry soldier on a successful career trajectory. He had completed Airborne training, the Ranger Indoctrination program and trained abroad with the Belgium Commandos. He deployed with the first infantry division and had just attended Special Forces Assessment and Selection – when the universe decided it had other plans for him. While he does not have much in the way of actual memory of the accident itself, he was told that he had been hit by a drunk driver while on his motorcycle. He has a vague memory of laying on the pavement, a helicopter, doctors speaking in German desperately working on him and the plane ride leading to his arrival at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC. He was told he had suffered multiple injuries, including the loss and subsequent amputation of his left arm. Jonathan was subjected to many surgeries the first couple of months to replace his tibia and femur with titanium rods and multiple bone grafts. The loss of his arm was overshadowed by the overwhelming concern of never being able to walk again. Jonathan Lopez was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 2001 following the amputation of his left arm. But having one arm hasn't stopped Lopez from competing in Spartan races and even climbing a 30-foot rope. With the help of Operation Enduring Warrior, a veterans charity that helps "facilitate the physical, mental and emotional rehabilitation of our nation's wounded service," Lopez has been able to participate in Spartan races, even in spite of his disability. About Earl Granville A nine-year veteran of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard as an infantryman, Granville served in support of Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. In the summer of 2008, while on patrol in Zormat, Afghanistan, his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb, resulting in the amputation of his left leg through his knee. His comrades, Specialist Derek Holland, of Wind Gap, Pennsylvania, and Major Scott Haggerty, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, were killed in action. In December 2010, Granville suffered the loss of his twin brother, Staff Sergeant Joseph Granville, who took his own life. Today, Granville speaks publicly about the importance of finding professional help when coping with mental distress, particularly for members of the military who have served in combat. In addition to speaking engagements, Granville competes in adaptive sports, including monoski, sled hockey and in GoRuck Endurance Challenges and Spartan Races. He has competed in numerous marathons across the county on a hand bicycle, including the Marine Corps Marathon and races in Boston, Detroit, Chicago and New York. He ran two half marathons alongside Operation Enduring Warrior is a finisher of the 2016 Bataan Death Memorial March; and completed the Spartan Agoge, a 60-hour endurance event. He is a team member of Operation Enduring Warrior, a non-profit organization managed by veterans, and he is the lead ambassador of Oscar Mike, an American-made apparel company founded by veterans.
