From time to time during the more than five years of The Weekly Driver Podcast, co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia catch-up on automotive news instead of having a guest. This week on Episode #260 we visit four diverse topics — cheap SUVs, the death of speed racing icon Craig Breedlove, the most expensive states to own vehicles and no ignition new car It's no secret, Hyundai and Kia have drastically improved in recent years. The related manufacturers' vehicles have had some of the industry's top ratings, from economy to luxury segments. The 2023 Hyundai Venue is also the country's cheapest SUV. It only has 121 horsepower and its cargo area is a postage-stamp sized at 32 cubic feet. And it's not available with all-wheel drive. But for about $20,000 its base model is available. Breedlove, who died in April at age 86, was a professional race car driver and a five-time world land speed record holder. A California native living in Rio Vista, Breedlove was the first person in history to reach 500 and 600 miles per hour. The Hyundai Venue is the cheapest SUV in the United States. All of his turbojet-powered vehicles were named Spirit of America, and Breedlove's persona fit the name. He was handsome and flamboyant and perfect for the spotlight. The need for speed was also a family affair. Breedlove's wife, Lee Breedlove, became the fastest woman in the world when she drove the Sonics 1 to 308 mph in 1965. Craig Breedlove was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2009. Bruce and I also discuss the most expensive states to own a vehicle. And here's a surprise: It's Connecticut where $1,503 on average is the year cost for a minimum insurance policy. The cost increases to $2,999 for a full coverage policy. Finally, Bruce and I talk about the 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge. It's the first vehicle both of us have driven that doesn't have an ignition button, toggle or switch or any need for a keyfob except to have it nearby to operate the car. In this week's edition of Cruise Control, our trio of petrol heads mull over the problem with our flimsy road tax slips, amidst a flurry of interesting new compact and sporty SUVs. Honda's announcement of their HRV RS e:HEV model looks set to send potential customers bee-lining to place their orders, as the Jaguar XF also launched with a new look for 2022. Speaking of SUVs, we preview Maserati's Grecale which could be yours for slightly less than RM500k, as well as the Proton X70 1.5L variant which is set to appeal to those wishing the previous 1.8 litre model to be more fuel efficient. We round up with a car review, as Daniel recounts his experience driving Volvo's new electric SUV, the XC40 Recharge.
WLS News Anchor Rob Martier, DriveChicago.com General Manager Mark Bilek and Chicago Auto Show Marketing Director Jim OBrill review the Toyota Corolla Cross, discuss the evolution of the ICE engine, and take a Quick Spin with Dave Boe in the Volvo XC40 Recharge.
As more and more people consider switching from conventional vehicles to EVs, we wanted to see what it would be like to live with one of the most-appealing EVs out there. So we borrowed a 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge and put it through a rigorous list of tasks for a week. The XC40 Recharge is Volvo's leader in its quest to become an all-electric carmaker by 2035. The big question: is: can the average American adapt to the new lifestyle that a leading-edge EV like the XC40 Recharge requires? We'll tell you the good and the bad of both the vehicle itself and the EV lifestyle in our special report. In the news segment, we discuss exciting development in the innovative quest to create climate-friendly fuels. One fuel we discovered is said to be created from carbon dioxide pulled from the atmosphere, resulting in a closed loop that doesn't add incremental carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Instead, with this potential gamechanger, it's carbon out and carbon in. Will this breakthrough doom electric cars? Host Jack Nerad and Co-Host Chris Teague will discuss this fascinating development. Also in the news segment, Jack Nerad outlines his recent analysis of whether buying a hybrid or plug-in hybrid is a good answer to the nation's rapidly rising fuel prices. We'll reveal what he discovered. In the road test segment, Co-Host Chris Teague takes a long look at a very popular compact SUV, the 2022 Chevy Equinox. It's a vehicle that doesn't get much love from car testers, but it's also a vehicle you and your family might cherish. Teague will give us his conclusions. And we have a terrific guest. Phillip Battista is president of dealership technologies at J.D. Power, and he and his team have just launched Shop With Ease. It's a digital auto retailing solution that allows shoppers the ability to search, purchase, and finance vehicles without having to leave the dealer's or manufacturer's website. It could help you buy your next car painlessly and swiftly. All this and more coming up this week on America on the Road.

VOLKSWAGEN FACES PRODUCTION STOPPAGES DUE TO UKRAINE SUPPLY ISSUES - Volkswagen AG said Tuesday that supply chain bottlenecks caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine would force it to halt some production at its main German plant and in other factories. - The announcement comes after VW idled production this week in Zwickau, its most important factory for producing electric cars, including the ID.4 that is exported to the U.S. - After realizing that delivery of wiring harnesses—a kit containing wires, connectors and terminals to connect a car's components—from suppliers in Ukraine had been interrupted, VW decided to shut down production in Zwickau and its plant in Dresden this week. They include a Polestar 3 mid-size SUV due out later this year, Polestar 4 small crossover due in 2023, and Polestar 5 large hatchback due in 2024." "What we see in our latest spy shots is a test mule for the Polestar 4, essentially the vehicle's running gear and internal structure hidden beneath a makeshift body. In this case the body is a modified Volvo XC40 with some elements borrowed from the related Polestar 2." "The test mule gives us an idea about certain hard points and also reveals that the Polestar 4 will be both longer and wider than the XC40. It will also be lower to the ground than the upcoming Polestar 3, and may even feature a coupe-like profile. Expect the styling to be heavily influenced by 2020's Polestar Precept concept, which is also the basis for the Polestar 5." "While the Polestar 3 will ride on Volvo's SPA2 platform debuting in the XC90 replacement also due out this year (both SUVs will be twins under the skin), the Polestar 4 is expected to use a Polestar-tweaked version of parent company Geely's SEA platform." Expect something to compete with Model Y Perf, Porsche Macan and Mercedes EQE. While that may sound like a lot of money, it's actually very reasonably priced for an 80-amp charging station that can offer bidirectional power flow. - The Ford Charge Station Pro uses the CCS or "Combo" connector because it needs the two DC pins on the bottom of the connector to deliver power back from the vehicle to the house. When the Charge Station Pro is charging the F-150 Lightning, it's using the J1772 pins at the top of the CCS connector, but when the vehicle is sending power back to the charging station, it does so using the two DC pins at the bottom. - the unit requires a 100-amp dedicated circuit if you want it to deliver the full 19.2 kW that it's capable of delivering. - if you do de-rate the power the Charge Station Pro delivers to the Lightning, it can still deliver the full 40-amps (9.6 kW) to your home in the case of a power failure. That's because the two sides of the Charge Station Pro (AC for charging & DC to power your home) are separate, and have different wiring feeds. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/570461/ford-charge-station-pro-cost/ HERE ARE THE EIGHT FULLY ELECTRIC TOP SAFETY PICK VEHICLES FOR 2022 - Eight electric cars were among the 65 models recognized with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) highest Top Safety Pick+ award for 2022. - Released Thursday, the list includes the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, Volvo XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, Volkswagen ID.4, and Audi E-Tron and E-Tron Sportback. Note that the C40 Recharge and E-Tron Sportback are "coupe" versions of the XC40 Recharge and E-Tron, respectively. - the Ford Mustang Mach-E received the second-tier Top Safety Pick award. The Mach-E missed out on the added "plus" because headlights on the Select and California Route 1 trim levels received a lower "Marginal" rating. The company is building a production facility for the battery at its Wakayama Factory, where it will create two more production lines and make structural improvements. - Development is continuing on the 4680 lithium-ion battery. It's expected to be around twice the size of current batteries and have a fivefold increase in energy capacity. - The company was said to be investing approximately 80 billion yen (around $694 million) into production equipment. It's targeting 60,000 units in Europe within the next two or three years, for around 50% of the model's overall sales volume. - Despite Fisker founder and boss Henrik Fisker telling Autocar at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that he doesn't see Tesla as a direct rival, there will be comparisons made. - The battle for the title of most innovative proposition is fast-paced, but it remains to be seen whether buyers will be swayed by solar roof panels or custom-effect horns. TESLAS TOP WORLDWIDE EV GOOGLE SEARCHES FOLLOWED BY THE VW GROUP - Based on the amount of news coverage it receives and the fervor of its fans, it's not surprising that Tesla tops the charts in terms of global Google searches for electric vehicles. Its four models are also the four most searched electric vehicles on Earth. - The Tesla Model 3 is the most-Googled electric vehicle on Earth, appearing in searches 2,240,000 times per month, followed by the Model S, Model Y and Model X. - The most-searched non-Tesla model is the Audi e-tron, which was Googled more than a million times per month in 2021, as was the Porsche Taycan, and they were followed by the Volkswagen ID.4 (823,000), which must please the Volkswagen Group. - In the U.S., meanwhile, the cars with the fastest-growing interest are the Volvo XC40 Recharge, which received 221,900 percent more searches in 2021 than it did in 2020; the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which got 12,442 percent more; and the Volkswagen ID.4, whose searches increased by 5,483 percent. New Leafs, which start at $32,000, are beyond the price range for many Ukrainians, whose average monthly salary was $530 in December 2021. - Ukrainians' other top choices in 2021 included the Tesla Model 3 (827 registered) and Chevrolet Bolt (762 registered). The above three models are responsible for almost 55% of the country's electric car market. It required not just endless hours in the garage/basement but almost as many flying to the U.S., Japan and Germany to purchase specialized car parts. - Not only does Yu have an electric Rolls-Royce, he also has a brand new business. Yu said he decided to use what he learned over the past four years to open a shop, Mars Power, in north Richmond where he plans to convert other vehicles from gasoline to electric. - To convert his RR, he had to sell his house to help pay for the project. That didn't sit well with his wife, who got so fed up with his project she left him, Yu explained. - Yu said his newly converted electric Rolls-Royce can run for 500 kilometers on a full charge, adding that it only costs him $8 in electricity to charge the battery compared with $120 to fill his tank with gasoline. - He found a small team of mechanics and machinists to help him and together they worked on the project almost every day. It's that team he's now employed at his new shop. The other Rosneft director nominated by bp, former bp group chief executive Bob Dudley, is similarly resigning from the board. - Like so many, I have been deeply shocked and saddened by the situation unfolding in Ukraine and my heart goes out to everyone affected. It has caused us to fundamentally rethink bp's position with Rosneft. I am convinced that the decisions we have taken as a board are not only the right thing to do, but are also in the long-term interests of bp. Our immediate priority is caring for our great people in the region and we will do our utmost to support them. We are also looking at how bp can support the wider humanitarian effort. In a recent study conducted by HERE, the navigation experts found that drivers consider such software a must-have tool in their electric vehicle. - HERE describes how applications that provide charging location information and real-time station data help increase the adoption of electric vehicles, especially as they now offer a more integrated experience. While HERE itself already offers an advanced pack of solutions aimed specifically at EV drivers, the entire industry is actually investing on this front. - Taking the experience one step further, vehicles equipped with Android Automotive, such as Volvos and Polestars, run Google Maps as the native navigation app. Now, thanks to deeper integration with the car's battery systems, it can monitor the current range and provide options to reach the destination more conveniently. It's why he selected a 912 as the basis of his project, figuring a more prosaic four-cylinder Porsche would be a less heretical subject for conversion from internal combustion to electric power. - A light-switch-reactive 120 pound-feet of electric torque makes Corlett's battery-powered 912 as easy to drive as a modern EV. A blend of 911 and Boxster suspension and brake components improves the performance envelope further. The dogleg five-speed manual transmission is retained - Power is up to 118 horsepower and is far more accessible than with a combustion engine. Further, the car is still light, with a curb weight equivalent to a fully fueled, six-cylinder 911 of the same period. - Eventually, Corlett crossed paths with the experts at EV West, who reworked the conversion and polished it for reliability. Corlett refers to this version as his 2.0 build. Its front-mounted 25-kWh battery pack gives slightly more than 100 miles of range, ideal for a Sunday morning cruise. The switch to electric vehicles has the potential to cut fuel costs, but it reveals the barriers that remain in ensuring everyone can access them. - Even public charging points cost about 25% less than the average cost of filling a petrol car at the pumps. However, the type of home someone has will impact on the costs of charging. “Unless addressed, these stark cost differences risk creating a ‘charging divide' – with the bulk of savings risk being accrued by richer households, which risks widening inequality,” the report concludes. - Jonny Marshall, senior economist at the Resolution Foundation, called on ministers to prioritise reducing the cost of public charging and encourage the installation of home charging points in rented accommodation. HOPES ELECTRIC CARS AND NEW BUSINESSES WILL HELP DOUBLE ITS REVENUE "General Motors Co (GM.N) Chief Executive Mary Barra told investors on Wednesday that the automaker plans to double revenue by 2030, expanding profits from combustion vehicles even as it rolls out new electric vehicles and new digitally powered services to catch up with Tesla Inc (TSLA.O)." reported Reuters yesterday: "GM said if it succeeds, annual revenue by 2030 would be about $280 billion, and the automaker would be the leader in U.S. electric vehicle sales. Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson said GM expects pre-tax profit margins of 12 to 14%, which could beat current levels. That would imply annual pre-tax profits of as much as $39 billion. Jacobson said GM can fund $9 billion to $10 billion in annual capital spending for electric vehicles and other initiatives while returning money to shareholders." https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/gm-aims-double-revenues-by-2030-it-drives-pass-tesla-2021-10-06/ "General Motors has been spending billions of dollars in the last few years to electrify its cars and trucks, as it tries to catch up to Tesla. Now the company, which has said it aims to stop selling gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035, is beginning to reveal how big it expects this bet will pay off." reports New York Times: "The automaker said on Wednesday that it aims to roughly double its annual revenue by 2030, to about $280 billion. It is counting on new electric trucks and cars for much of the growth while adding new revenue streams from software and services. While it expects modest growth in sales of gasoline-powered vehicles, electric cars are “a tremendous growth opportunity,” [Mary Barra, GM Chief Exec] said. G.M. also hopes to develop ride-hailing services that use autonomous cars, create insurance products and expand its defense contracting work. Read more: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/06/business/gm-revenue-goals.html# "General Motors laid out its forthcoming EV portfolio at its investor event Wednesday, with the full-size electric pickup Chevrolet Silverado as the centerpiece, as the company seeks to gain market share in the increasingly crowded electric truck market." was the take from TechCrunch: "While GM had previously announced the electric Silverado, the company confirmed some additional details, like that it would feature a fixed-glass roof for certain models and that the vehicle would debut at the trade show CES in January 2022. It's joining Ford's F-150 Lightning and Rivian's R1T in the burgeoning electric truck segment — a segment that until now has been conspicuously empty, despite the truck being one of the best-selling vehicle types in America. GM also announced crossovers from its brands Chevy and Buick, in addition to its upcoming GMC Hummer pickup and Cadillac Lyriq crossover. CEO Mary Barra emphasized that the company will offer affordable EVs — “really affordable EVs for people” — as well as other features to lure some would-be Tesla customers." The automaker announced the new system as a more capable sibling of today's Super Cruise system. While Super Cruise is rated for hands-free driving on mapped, divided highways in the US and Canada, Ultra Cruise takes it further. In addition to highways, GM said it will handle hands-free driving in 95% of all scenarios. We're talking city streets, subdivision streets and even paved rural roads." writes CNET.com: "Ultra Cruise will cover 2 million miles of roads in the US and Canada, but the automaker has quick plans to add another 1.4 million miles' worth of roads. And when this happens, GM plans for a big strategy shift in which vehicles offer either Super Cruise or Ultra Cruise. Cadillac will be the exclusive brand to provide the Ultra Cruise driving experience, while Super Cruise trickles down to more mainstream offerings from GMC, Buick and Chevrolet. With a combination of cameras, radars and lidar onboard to create the Ultra Cruise system, the technology will support everything from parking in your driveway to object avoidance (that's good), on-demand lane changes and left- and right-hand turns." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/gm-ultra-cruise-tesla-full-self-driving-beta-rival/ Today, General Motors announced the Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center, an all-new facility that will significantly expand the company's battery technology operations and accelerate development and commercialization of longer range, more affordable electric vehicle batteries. The Wallace Center will be located on the campus of GM's Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. The battery engineering team based at the Wallace Center will experiment with many types of future battery chemistry in addition to lithium-metal, including pure silicon and solid-state, along with different cell form factors. The Wallace Center is expected to build batteries ranging in energy density from 600 to 1200 watt-hours per liter, along with crucial battery cell ingredients like cell active materials. The Wallace Center will be capable of building large-format, prototype lithium-metal battery cells for vehicle usage beyond the small-scale lithium-metal cells typically used in handheld devices or research applications. These cells could be as large as 1,000 mm, nearly twice the size of the initial Ultium pouch cells and will be based on GM's proprietary formula. GMC HUMMER EV IS BUILT TO WOW "The giant, 200.0-kWh battery is a stressed member of the chassis, which is a sort of hybrid between body-on-frame and unibody; there is a frame and a body, but they aren't isolated in the usual body-on-frame manner. Half-shafts are massive ball-spline units, necessary when an independent suspension with more than nine inches of travel is paired with three motors with the combined twist of 1200 pound-feet of torque. With two motors acting on the rear axle, no differential is necessary, but programming can virtually lock the axle so the motors turn each side at the same speed. Up front there is a locking diff for the third motor." writes Car And Driver: "Our on-road drive was limited, but we found a truck that went down the road with the purpose and confidence born of its mass and power. Not many corrections are required to keep it in a highway lane, and not a lot of feedback comes through the steering wheel when you have to turn. But we weren't expecting much in terms of communication from the 305/70R-18 mud-terrain Goodyears. The ride, however, is downright sublime. Adaptive dampers and air springs bridle the mass with authoritative control." Delivery this year. 350 miles for $112,000. That includes about 1,700 sold in the U.S." reports InsideEVs: "About every fourth Volvo sold year-to-date was a plug-in (over 132,000 YTD). The lineup consists of several plug-in hybrids and one all-electric model - Volvo XC40 Recharge, which soon will be joined by the Volvo C40 Recharge. By 2025, Volvo intends to increase the share of BEVs in its global sales volume to 50%, and 100% by 2030." Full battery electrics outperformed, alone taking 15.2% share and a record 32,721 unit volume. Old-school diesel sales fell off a cliff, dropping to under 5% market share in an overall auto market down ~45% in volume from seasonal norms at just over 215,000 units. With an end of quarter push, the Tesla Model 3 was the UK's overall best seller in September." reports Cleantechnica: "Old school combustion powertrains (those without any regen/electric-assist) fell below 50% of the market (48.75%) for the first time since the steam age. Unassisted diesels fell to their lowest point in the modern era, at just 4.95% share, from 14.33% year-on-year, with volume at a pitiful 10,658 units. Tesla Model 3, boosted by Tesla's usual end-of-quarter peak, was the UK's overall best selling vehicle in September, with 6879 registrations." https://cleantechnica.com/2021/10/05/uk-plugin-ev-share-above-20-in-september-tesla-model-3-overall-bestseller/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Returned on Sunday 10th October! VW EV PRODUCTION IN ZWICKAU NEAR CAPACITY A graph published by VW shows the production output of their Zwickau plant has been rising since the start of 2021. The MEB-based cars are all electric such as the ID.3. But a total of 6 models from various VW brands will be made there, such as the ID.5 which hasn't stated production yet. The production capacity is 330,000 EVs per year from this one facility, about 20% of VW's 1.5million EVs they are on track to make every year by 2025. Now we see the daily run rate hitting 1,200. When it gets to 1,500 that's capacity for a 5 day week with some weeks for shutdown every year. So the chip shortage hasn't affected the MEB cars out of Zwickau. It will definitely be affecting VW ICE cars tho so that suggests they are willing to sacrifice ICE to make EVs, to hit CO2 targets in order to avoid fines, and also we know the MEB-based cars are profitable too. HERBERT DIESS: "THE MAIN BENCHMARK IS TESLA" Herbert Diess appeared on a German podcast yesterday morning called The Pioneer Morning Briefing. For my German listeners, this is what he had to say about the speed Tesla works at, and yes I'll try to translate after this clip. Something like: "The true benchmark is really Tesla, the speed yes, with the same suppliers Tesla manages to do product development with the same suppliers in half the time which is much more aggressive. They can of course take a lot more risk than we can." But what about Cybertruck, long overdue Semi Truck, the Roadaster 2? It doesn't feel VW wants to be more like Tesla because that kind of -ship-it-now-and-fix-it-later style is not the German way, but there's definitely capital to be gained by saying 'hey look at what these guys are doing, we need to change'. It helps his political battle to push through reform at VW. It's important to remember that each road-legal car has its own VIN, which is a string of 17 characters containing the vehicle's unique identifier. This advancement is a critical one in the long process of bringing the much-anticipated Air EV to market. " reports Finbold.com: "Lucid will open the doors of its Advanced Manufacturing Plant (AMP-1) in Casa Grande to the media, financial community, policymakers, and a select group of customers. The series of events for the week of September 27th, 2021, will see a small group of guests have the opportunity to observe manufacturing methods for Lucid Air and learn more about Lucid's revolutionary EV technology from Lucid's top engineers." There's a 64.4kWh battery pack option in the truly lightweight option or you can go up to 99.6kWh for the dual-motor, maximum horsepower edition. There's also a configuration for a four-seater car, where the battery is packed into the base of the chassis as it is in skateboard-style platforms." evo magazine adds: "Both layouts have their inherent pros and cons thanks to where the mass sits within the chassis, but whereas you might think models fitted with a stacked battery pack might be at a disadvantage thanks to a higher centre of gravity, many engineers continue to struggle with developing ride and handling packages that deal with the physics associated with a driver being sat directly above, not in the midst of so much weight. The stacked batteries will also allow lotus engineers to mount the seat much lower than in a car, again mimicking the weight distribution of traditional IC cars." Audi has only shared range estimates for the 50 models so far, which sits at 241 miles according to the EPA. Renault Group says it is investing more than €550 million in the production facilities there and in improved workplace ergonomics." says electrive.com: "The first step in this transformation has now been the conversion of an assembly line that can now produce numerous models from various vehicle classes, including the Mégane E-Tech Electric. A central component of the site's electromobility strategy is the on-site battery production and assembly that was officially announced in the summer. This is based on a partnership between the Renault Group and Envision AESC. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 10th September. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA MODEL Y LANDS IN NETHERLANDS IN 30% PLUGIN SHARE MONTH - The Dutch plugin vehicle (PEV) market continues in the fast lane, with 6,637 plugin registrations logged last month. That meant that last month's PEV share of the overall passenger auto market reached 30% (20% BEV), pulling the year-to-date PEV share to 22% (12% BEV) and the total tally to 45,426 units - In August, the plugin sales leader was again the Kia Niro EV, with 753 registrations, placing it as the leader in the overall auto market. The runner-up was the Skoda Enyaq, with the Czech station-wagon-disguised-as-a-crossover registering 487 units. - BEVs are returning to form, getting 66% of August's registrations. Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/tesla-plans-begin-trading-solar-wind-battery-storage-energy-2021-09-08 WHY RIVIAN'S "TANK TURN" STATIONARY SPIN FEATURE IS DELAYED - First, unless conditions are perfect, it's possible each wheel will have a different amount of grip than the others and require more or less power to break traction. While the truck's computer can read the road surface via suspension inputs as you're driving, there's no good way for it to know exactly what the surface under each tire is like when you come to a stop. If any wheel is getting too much or too little power during a Tank Turn, it can cause the vehicle to spin off in a random direction instead of rotating in one place. Power delivery has to be programmed very carefully to respond to changing grip before and during a Tank Turn. You can see this issue crop up right at the beginning of the video. - because the truck's wheelbase isn't square (that is, because there's more distance between the front and rear axles than there is between the wheels on either side of each axle), it won't always rotate around the exact center of the vehicle, especially if the surface isn't consistent. If the point of rotation is off center, it can cause the vehicle to spin off in any direction instead of rotating in one place. A safeguard needs to be programmed to recognize this situation and either correct it or end the Tank Turn. - In order to execute a Tank Turn, all four wheels have to break traction. Once that happens, the truck is at the mercy of physics. If the surface is inclined in any direction, the truck will slide that direction as it spins. - During testing, Rivian discovered the amount of power needed to get all four wheels spinning results in a lot of wheel speed, which ends up making the truck spin around very fast. From inside the truck, it's a hell of a ride, so much so there's concern it'll scare drivers who aren't ready for it · Original Source : https://www.motortrend.com/news/why-rivian-tank-turn-stationary-spin-feature-is-delayed MERCEDES-BENZ'S MAYBACH EV CONCEPT HELPS THE RICH FEEL EVEN BETTER ABOUT THEMSELVES - Mercedes-Benz has shown off the electric Maybach EQS, an opulent concept car that the company says is a preview of what the future of high-end electric cars may look like. The company revealed the EV SUV at the IAA Mobility show, where it also announced a G-Class SUV concept, and a more attainable electric sedan. - Mercedes says the interior is supposed to remind you of a yacht, and the SUV has something called a “Chauffeur package.” - Mercedes calls the concept “a clear preview of the first fully electric series-production model” in the Maybach line, and the company already has an EV platform kicking around that it could put to use. It's not a subtle car, so I'm sure it won't be hard to miss when something like it eventually hits the road Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2021/9/9/22664950/mercedes-maybach-eqs-electric-suv-concept-future-luxury VOLVO'S ELECTRIC XC40 RECHARGE ALREADY SOLD OUT IN AUSTRALIA, WITH "HUNDREDS" ON ORDER - The first allocation in Australia of the all-electric Volvo XC40 Recharge is already exhausted, Volvo has confirmed with The Driven. - “The entire initial allocation of hundreds is spoken for,” Volvo's spokesperson told The Driven in a note. However, those wanting to place orders will still be able to sit behind the wheel by early 2022. “New orders placed from today are planned for arrival during February 2022,” they added. - The XC40 Recharge is offered in only one configuration, with a predicted 418km driving range from its 78kWh battery and a plethora of Volvo safety systems. With nearly 50,000 chargers planned by 2030 as part of an ambitious plan, NYC's government looks to build one of the largest municipal charging networks in the country. - Governor Kathy Hochul (D-NY) has signed new legislation to support the state's efforts outlined below. The legislation sets a new goal for all new passenger cars and trucks sold in New York State to be zero emissions by 2035. - In a recent release from the NYPA alongside the NYC DOT and EVconnect, the group has successfully installed four of 28 planned DC fast charging plugs within city-owned municipal garages. The initial goal for this city-owned and operated charging network is 80 plugs by 2025. - The recently shared plan outlines ambitious, city-wide climate goals for the next decade, citing that NYC will need 400,000 drivers to switch to EVs by 2030 and will work to provide the charging infrastructure to support them. Original Source : https://electrek.co/2021/09/09/nyc-dot-looks-to-build-one-of-the-largest-ev-charging-networks-in-the-us UNIONS MIGHT HAMPER THE MOVE TO ZERO EMISSIONS - President Joe Biden wants to corner the market on electric vehicles. In August, he announced a target that by 2030, half of the vehicles sold in the United States will be battery electric, fuel-cell electric or plug-in hybrid. It would be a seismic shift for an auto industry dominated by gas-powered vehicles. But resistance to Biden's ambitious goal is coming from a surprising stakeholder: the United Autoworkers Union, one of Biden's oldest political allies. - There are tens of thousands of auto workers in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio involved in producing internal combustion engines, Wayne State University professor and UAW labor expert Marick Masters told CNN. With many fewer parts to electric vehicles and less labor required, there are natural questions about what impact the transition could have on jobs. - Union leaders told CNN they recognize an ally in Biden and have praised the president's pro-union rhetoric. For now, they are relying on Biden's and Congressional Democrats' word that they'll attempt to boost union-made cars with tax credits — something that is far from guaranteed. Film: The Tomorrow War op Amazon Prime Video.
