Donald Macleod tracks the scandalous life of Achille-Claude DebussyIn the music of Claude Debussy there have been said to run dangerous and destructive currents. His radical works did forge a path which would redefine music in the 20th Century, but his beautiful music runs contrary to his shocking personal life. The Scottish soprano Mary Garden said of him, “I honestly don't know if he ever loved anybody really. He loved his music – and perhaps himself.” The lies and duplicity, deception and debt left other unfortunate people in their wake, with Debussy unrepentant throughout. In the aftermath of these scandals, Debussy was disowned by his friends, and by most of Parisian society, but the notoriety he gained only seemed to heighten his appeal with audiences. Over the course of this week, Donald Macleod tracks the scandalous life of Achille-Claude Debussy and tries to reconcile his appalling behaviour with his transcendent music.Suite Bergamasque (3rd mvt, Claire de Lune) La Mer (2nd mvt, Jeux de vagues) Ariettes Oubliee (No 5, Green) Images for Orchestra (No 2, Iberia) Mélodies de Jeunesse (No 3, Les Papillons) Recueil Vasnier, L 53 (Romance – Silence ineffable) Printemps (2nd mvt, Modere) Danse bohemienne Deux Arabesques Rodrigue et Chimene (excerpt) (arr. Art Hounds: Evan Abrahamson's dreamy landscapes

Art Hounds

Updated: 9:35 a.m. Daniel Doktori and his wife moved to Minneapolis and found painter Evan Abrahamson's work at local art fairs.  “We kept running into Evan and his booth and his work. And we really fell in love with it,” Doktori says. “His work is oil on canvas. And it combines this kind of really impressive skill in terms of rendering lifelike images of both landscapes and people with this kind of blurring technique that results in a kind of a haunting or like a dream-like type image and we think it's really quite wonderful.” The show at Gallery 360 in Minneapolis runs through May 28. Merritt Olsen recently moved to Minnesota from the West Coast and recommends the Rochester Civic Theatre's production of “The Miracle Worker” on stage through Sunday. Olsen recommends the play not only because it's a “wonderful, timeless play,” but also because there's an exhibit called “Child in a Strange Country” that accompanies it. “This exhibit highlights the Innovations in Education for the blind and the low-vision,” Olsen explains. “It outlines an alphabet of touch that opened the door for learning in the fields of geography, biology, chemistry, physics, you name it. And Helen Keller's curiosity and lifelong commitment to furthering the learning of others influenced these educational efforts. So it's a wonderful marriage of the play and the exhibit.” The exhibit is open through April 29. Jere Lantz is a longtime music conductor in the Twin Cities and Rochester. He is excited about the debut of a new musical organization, The Classical Music Project.   “It's put together by a bunch of professional musicians who feel that music from the Classical period is not as focused on by the public as it used to be,” he says. The Classical Music Project debuts this weekend with two musical pieces: Beethoven's Sonata for Orchestra No. 7 in C Minor, Op. 30, and No. 2b Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, Op. 58. The Beethoven sonata will be conducted by Yaniv Segal, with an arrangement by composers Garrett Schumann and Segal.  The second part of the program, Piano Concerto No. 4, is performed by Nachito Herrera, who also is known for his Afro-Cuban jazz virtuosity, playing at the Dakota in Minneapolis, among other venues.  The Classical Music Project will perform at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis on Sunday. Correction (April 20, 2023): In an earlier version of this story, an artist's name was misspelled. This has been corrected.

Synopsis OK – say you were paid to listen to and promote hundreds of new classical recordings every month and travel the world to broker new deals for a major record company. The question is, “What would you do in your spare time?” Well, if you’re a composer, the answer is easy: write your OWN music, of course. Sean Hickey’s “day job” is being the Senior Vice-President for Sales and Business Development at Naxos of America, but who also finds time to create his own chamber and orchestral works. On today’s date in 2007, for example, his Clarinet Concerto received its premiere performance at Symphony Space in New York City, with David Gould as soloist with the Metro Chamber Orchestra. It’s gone on to be his most-performed orchestra work, and, in keeping with Hickey’s globe-trotting, has been recorded in the Russian Federation by another virtuoso clarinetist, Alexander Fiterstein with the St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony. The work also incorporates fragments of folk tunes from Scotland as part of the creative mix. Why Scottish themes? “They have a timeless quality of most great folk music, “says Hickey. “In the concerto’s cadenza, a fiddle tune leads headlong into a rapturous close.” Music Played in Today's Program Sean Hickey — Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra (Alexander Fiterstein, cl; St. Petersburg Academic Symphony; Vladimir Lande, cond.)Delos 3448 On This Day Births 1899 - American composer and teacher Randall Thompson, in New York; 1933 - American composer and pianist Easley Blackwood, in Indianapolis; Premieres 1845 - Lortzing: opera "Undine," in Magdeburg at the Stadttheater; 1889 - Puccini: opera "Edgar," in Milan at the Teatro alla Scala; 1917 - Debussy: Sonata No. 2 for flute, viola, and harp, at a concert of the Société Musicale Indépendante in Paris, by the trio of Manouvirier (flute), Jarecki (viola), and Jamet (harp); 1918 - Prokofiev: Symphony No. 1 ("Classical"), in Petrograd, by the former Court Orchestra with the composer conducting; 1922 - Frederick Converse: Symphony No. 2, by the Boston Symphony, Pierre Monteux conducting; 1924 - Youmans: musical "No, No Nanette," in Detroit; After stops in Chicago and London, the musical opened on Broadway on Sept. 16, 1925; 1937 - Copland: a play-opera for high school "The Second Hurricane," at the Grand Street Playhouse in New York City, with soloists from the Professional Children's School, members of the Henry Street Settlement adult chorus, and the Seward High School student chorus, with Lehman Engle conducting and Orson Welles directing the staged production; One professional adult actor, Joseph Cotton, also participated (He was paid $10); 1939 - Leonard Bernstein's first appearance as a conductor, leading his own incidental score to "The Birds" at Harvard; 1942 - Bernstein: Clarinet Sonata, in Boston, with clarinetist David Glazer and the composer at the piano; 1948 - Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 6, at Royal Albert Hall in London, by the BBC Symphony, Sir Adrian Boult conducting; 1973 - Bliss: "Variations" for orchestra, in London, with Leopold Stokowski conducting; 1985 - Morton Feldman: "For Philip Guston," for chamber ensemble, in New York; 1988 - Bernstein: "Missa brevis," in Atlanta by the Atlanta Symphony Chorus conducted by Robert Shaw; Others 1749 - Against Handel's wishes, in advance of its official premiere scheduled for April 27, a public rehearsal of Handel's "Music for the Royal Fireworks" at Vauxhall Gardens takes place; Reports suggest 12,000 attended, causing traffic jams on London Bridge (Gregorian date: May 2); 1829 - Mendelssohn, age 20, arrives in London for his first visit. 1863 - American premiere of J.S. However, once he discovered he had a knack for lighting design, it was only a matter of time before a life on the road would change his fortunes for good. After several years as both Lighting Designer and Production Manager, Jimmy ultimately made the switch to focus solely on being the best Production Manger he could, and through his career he has worked with the likes of Trans Siberian Orchestra, No Doubt, Spin Doctors, PINK, New Kids On the Block, Backstreet Boys, Goo Goo Dolls, and many, many more. I must aopologize for my extended time since my last posting. When I started this podcast, I wanted to work tirelessly to keep new material posted to the podcast. As some of you know, I am a healthcare professional. I recently took the next step in my career and started traveling across the country. My first move found me without my laptop. I recently purchased a brand new laptop, much faster than my last and more disk space to rip more music and download more podcasts. So maybe the payoff in this delay is that there will be far fewer delays in the future as we take on more assignments in other parts of this great country of ours. I see from the statistics that I am still getting new subscribers and downloaders EVERY day. I have also noticed that other classical music podcasts still haven't provided new material in while, in some cases, more than a year. As I am posting this brand new podcast, I am saving tons more material for future podcasts. Enjoy this podcast and send me requests, suggestions and comments to radiojesse@podomatic.com. I appreciate your encouraging emails!!!

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the Children's Laureate Jacqueline Wilson. She's won just about every award going for children's fiction and, in a career spanning more than 30 years, has written more than 80 books. Even as a child she knew she wanted to write but, after an inauspicious time at school, she reluctantly trained to be a secretary instead. Then she began to pitch ideas for a new teen magazine, Jackie, her stories were bought and she quickly became a staff writer. But she was 50 before she devised her most famous creation, Tracy Beaker. Tracy is a streetwise, feisty girl growing up in the competitive world of a children's home, who never loses the hope that one day her mum will come back for her. The book was a breakthrough for Jacqueline and its subsequent television adaptation introduced her to a mass audience. In 2002 she was awarded an OBE for services to literacy.
